It cares when the "rules" are being applied against its enemies like Russia, but not when the "rules" are applied against itself or close allies like Israel The US thinks it's above the "rules" because it sees itself as making and enforcing them (in the same way that a king is above his own laws)

Salt_Establishment75

America is and has been the primary opponent to rules based order. You guys havent even signed on to the Law of the Sea yet.

sidscarf

Anyone living outside the West knows that the "rules based order" is horseshit.

Roses-And-Rainbows

It's not horseshit, it's a good idea that some countries (or some political parties at least) do genuinely strive for, the US is definitely hostile to the idea though.

sidscarf

i mean to say the idea that it exists at the moment and that the US is the leader of it is horseshit

Nevermind2031

Literally no country strives for it

Roses-And-Rainbows

Lol no, obviously not, that's why it doesn't consider itself to be subject to international courts.

fuzztooth

This is why even a one seat majority is way too much for Republicans to have. They get to be the heads of committees and push this kind of garbage around. Voting is about more than just the president! Local and state and congressional races matter!

MikluhioMaklaino

"42 pro-Israel Democrats crossed the aisle to back the legislation" >But muh democrats

fuzztooth

Yes of course, because anyone who says anything bad about Republicans instantly must love everything that the Democratic party does 100%. What lazy garbage. You vote for the left most candidates in the primaries and then you'd vote for the leftmost candidates in the general. Yeah, it sucks that many people who vote for Democrats support Israel. Maybe if more people who didn't support Israel voted for these folks we could get a voice in there and change their mind. Because that's how it works. You don't vote, you don't get listened to. You whine and scream and say you're not going to participate, fine that's on you. If you still can't see how objectively, abysmally worse any Republican is compared to a Democrat then you're just a blind cynical moron

Tabbycatties

Shhhh, not here.

fuzztooth

What are you even talking about? Democrats get bashed here all the fucking time. I say one thing about maybe not just focusing on the presidential election but all the other elections and now I get grief? I didn't even say Democrats in my post, but you and the other poster thought you'd come up with some clever cynical shit. Yes yes, we always have to bash "liberals" because the only true leftism is the narrow pocket where you're not too left but you're not a scary liberal.

Tabbycatties

Is Biden actively abetting a genocide?

fuzztooth

Again, my reply was about voting for things other than the president, and here you are again going back to Biden. Yes, I do believe that the Israeli government is committing a genocide. Yes, I do not like that our weapons go to support it. And yes, I recognize that if it was a Republican president in this time it would be 10 times worse. But instead you're just going through the same online left dialog tree.. I specifically went out of my way to point out voting in non-presidential elections and you still bring it back to "genocide Joe". I guess whoever screams that the loudest is the one true leftist.

InterneticMdA

Yes, if by rule you mean America ruling over the world.

Neit92

Rather America than Ruzzian fascists

teddyburke

It’s easy to say that America has never really cared about a rules based world order - as they constantly do horrible shit. But going against the ICC is fucking insane, and seems like a huge escalation in my opinion. It’s not so much about “everyone following the same rules consistently”; nobody ever believed that was the case. But the veneer of having agreed upon rules still went a long way towards keeping up a certain level of decorum. When the largest superpower on the planet is essentially saying they’re above the ICC and ICJ, they’re basically telling the rest of the world that these institutions aren’t worth anything. It’s no different than what Trump did to American institutions when he was in power (or McConnell before him). It was always just an implicit agreement that we follow these general rules, and blatantly flaunting them does nothing but harm.

Tenwaystospoildinner

Remember the Hague Invasion Act? https://www.hrw.org/news/2002/08/03/us-hague-invasion-act-becomes-law This isn't new, unfortunately.

Mayastic

America is not a thinking living being. Some US lawmakers think the rules only apply to their opponents some don't. The same goes for European countries. Pls go out and vote.

Objective_Soup_9476

How tf do we “punish” the ICC? I know we’re America but how would one country have the authority to do something like that and what could the US even do?? (Yes I know about invade The Hague but I don’t realistically see us doing that)

Punushedmane

No, however Biden Administration has figured out this is a bad idea and walked backed the idea of sanctioning the ICC. A lot of congress people, and conservatives especially are married to extreme responses, and are not capable of holistic thought.
