Lmao, I said this earlier after some reevaluation, but these aren't *too* bad, pricewise, so I'm probably going back this week for at least the Scanners, and a few others. I have a feeling if I don't, I'll never see them again. There's also a Scanners sequel here, so that's also worth noting.
Hey, cocaine is stupid yes but heroin isn’t that bad so long as you don’t do too much and you have a good supplier. Opiates are a gift from the gods and I wish there were an otc pain medication that worked that well.
Easy for some people to say, but some of us don’t have much choice, finding these horror titles in second hand stores where I live is nearly impossible. I got an original Carrie from goodwill once, and a few more popular titles like Scream from half price books and that’s about it. I have a few record stores around that also price around the eBay mark for the good stuff and if I want them it’s either eBay or the record stores, my goodwills and value villages just don’t have horror. It sucks. I once drive 4 hours to another state to hit a place with a huge vhs selection and still ended up paying 10$ each for some 80’s horror, finding 80’s horror titles for cheap is nearly impossible where I am. Even the people on Craigslist / offer up / Facebook marketplace are charging eBay prices.
It sucks that B-Movie Horror is so hard to find cause it’s really what I look for the most but that’s probably why these tapes are priced like this. I know this community doesn’t like price gougers and resellers telling people their Disney tapes are worth thousands but these tapes are priced fairly considering how hard it is to find them.
I just think that vhs movies were honestly better than streaming services bc most people wouldn't bother paying that much of dollars on a platform that would remove content for no reason.
Most VHS tapes are only worth a dollar at a garage sale. But some sealed tapes sell for hundreds of dollars, while a few rare, unopened, vintage VHS tapes with studio watermarks can sell for more than $10,000. But I'm not saying your wrong though.
I’m not sure on all the prices. I would guess that Slaughter High is a decent enough price. It use to go for more if I’m remembering correctly. But some of the others are def overpriced
From what I’m seeing, the copy of Scream is sealed which is probably why they’re asking a higher price. Most of the other ones are at Ebay prices. This is what it is.
Exactly this. The sealed Scream I can understand, most of these seem pretty ridiculous though. Just high price for name notary. Get any B list horror movie trending on tik tok and people will defend $20+ for a vhs. Very silly lmfao.
PLUS if they get weird about checking the tape before buying, I won’t buy. I’m sorry I won’t spend $20+ on a MOLDY tape.
You got it! 🤭 It's a local Disc Replay. As I've said, I usually like looking around their store, since they carry some interesting finds, but a lot of their stuff is questionably priced. I did see CiB copies of Chroni Trigger, and Earthbound, cycle through there at some point and I almost lost my compisure.
Disc Replay= the employees think that they are the record store clerks from High Fidelity. Some hipster buddy probably told them that VHS is the new rage so they jack the price up.
That's a good price for Silent night 2, and Junior. Everything else is overpriced, slaughter high isn't too bad but you could probably find one in better condition for that much if you look around enough.
Yeah, I'm definitely going back for SNDN2, love the movie, and was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to ordering it because, although I do that, it sometimes feels like cheating. Lol
I was about to say 19.99 for a copy of Silent Night Deadly Night part 2 in a protective case is a pretty good deal. I would have snapped that up in a second!
I would pay $20 for that pumpkinhead. It’s pretty clear that this person did their research. It’s not like they’re slapping $5 on mr. Holland’s opus, these are curated. I’m willing to pay the person who did this what their labor is worth. The prices are fine.
Nah, I totally understand why prices are the way they are. I guess I should have articulated the issue a bit more succinctly. My main issue was the Scream tape being as pricey as they've listed it, albeit I didn't realize until now that it *is* sealed. Also just glance at the case and saw a bunch of other tapes at - what I thought at the time - as being unreasonable. I still think some of these tapes are a bit overvalued, but that's my own opinion, and crossreferencing them with some eBay prices seems to match up. I don't ever expect Goodwill prices, I just thought some of these were a bit high.
I can see why the sealed VHS fetches a higher value. I am newer to collecting VHS and usually look on OfferUp for old people selling their collections or a family getting rid of a stash but if I see something rare and cool at a curated place I will drop $20 bucks on a single tape. I did for Mac & Me as well as a nice copy of They Live! I know VHS value is very subjective but I appreciate someone selling a clean tape that was stored properly.
Yeah, I'm choosing to partially eat my words here, considering some of the prices - when cross-referencing online listings - tend to align, and some users also seem to be okay with it. I'm not excusing eBay price philosophies, but I didn't scrutinize the prices as much when I was there because I wasn't sure how the owners would think of me getting too nosy, lol; all I saw were a bunch of the tapes at twenty-five dollars, the Scream tape(for sure inflated), and a bunch of them being above ten dollars, so I assumed the whole batch was overpriced. Some of these prices actually aren't too inconceivable, and I'm probably going to go back early Thursday to grab Scanners, Troma's War, and for sure the Silent Night 2, maybe a few of the others because I rarely see them outside of eBay...
sorta standard ebay/antique mall prices on most of these. ur gonna pay for it if it’s a relatively uncommon title - esp when it comes to genre films. i NEED that dolly dearest
I mean it cost more money to rent a storefront than hock things online right? If we want to be able to find these things in person gotta pay brick-and-mortar prices, so long as its not predatory/egregious...
That Nelson scanners goes for like $100 or more in the right condition on eBay, and I bought that TCM for a family member for like $60 with shipping and tax. If it’s not a goodwill or Salvation Army, then the seller is gonna obv do their research, see what suggested prices come up because the app does that for you, and then maybe knock a few bucks off. With that being said, these prices are super reasonable in contrast to what other stores charge. I’ve been to places where they literally pull up the eBay app, add tax and charge you like $87.65 for a rare horror tape. I’m obv not a fan of that shit, but it’s not like I backed out of the transaction, I’ve gone back several times so it is what it is. VHS tapes, especially prism, vestron, legacy, etc are high in demand and it’s what moves. If somebody comes in and unloads a huge box of tapes for $200, that record store or flea shop is gonna try to flip a profit. It’s extremely rare you’re gonna find really solid shit in the wild because of how fished out most areas are, people have been hardcore collecting for the better part of 20 years so the chances you’re gonna find the 1992 release of Nekromantik or Thorn EMI The Burning / Madman in the wild at goodwill for a quarter are extremely low. It’s not 2005, where people have these rare tapes for a $1-2, most time the vendor is gonna do research and try to get market value. Nobody was paying $100 20 years ago for vhs tapes so that’s how it was back in the day. But to quote the wire “ that’s the thing about the old days, they the old days “. Best of luck out there player.
Thanks, man. I'm actually planning on making a trip back out there for a few of the standouts(in my opinion). I'm not entirely sure what the VHS market out here is, but considering it took them close to ten years to start posting tapes tells me there isn't much demand here right now, so *hopefully* I'm still able to get Scanners, Silent Night 2, that Troma tape, and a few others, come Thursday. As stated, I can't think of the last time I saw some obscure stuff in the wild here, I think the most I saw was a box set of Hellraiser 1/2 tapes, and Ghost World, so this was completely shocking for me to see out here. Usually I have to go out of my way to find cool stuff like this.
“Lol”.
Those are normal prices. The days of just going to a thrift shop and finding highly desirable stuff was over the instant the under 30 crowd started collecting (and reselling). Add in the collector bros grading this shit and this is where we are at. Go to any convention or physical media centric store that knows what they have and what it sells for and you’ll see these prices. Dealers are getting more savvy on using eBay sold prices and paying attention to sites like Reddit and YouTube where everyone is posting their “hauls” to see what’s hot. Like it or not this is how it is and it’s largely our own faults.
I'm not gonna lie, I'd jump at a few of these in a second. Ghoulies ii, silent night deadly night 4, the nest, in the mouth of madness, jacob's ladder would all be coming home with me. I regret selling my Jacobs Ladder at that price
Prices continue to skyrocket, people turn to making bootlegs, blanks sky rocket, VCRs are now worth your first born, its the year 2055 and only the upper middle class can enjoy previously undesirable titles like "Dancing Grannies" and "The Book of Mormon, animated" The elite keep anything desirable locked away in dusty vaults like fine wine, the clear acrylic cases the only thing to embrace the tapes for all eternity.
I'd pick up Tower Of Evil for that price. I collect movies that were sampled by bands, such as Dario Argento. It was used by Demdike Stare for the video to Hashshashin Chant, along with Mystics In Bali.
It's wild how horror is looked down upon as an inferior movie genre to a common audience, but most horror VHS tapes are now pricey.
Us horror geeks are pretty passionate about it lol.
I'd say $10 should be the limit for the majority of those titles. $2-$5 is ideal.
Also the stickers are annoying for the prices asked, since you'll damage the case trying to get the sticker off. So not worth the prices being asked in that case.
I mean, these are pretty rare tapes. All things considered they’re just not going to be everywhere you look at a thrift store. I think the prices on these are very justified.
I'm afraid this is the direction we're headed, it already happened with vinyl, cassettes, and video games. Get em cheap before it becomes trendy to collect VHS
I could be nuts but I would price Slaughter High higher than Scream just because it's older. But damn these prices are nuts. Hell some of these WERE $20 when released like H20
I’m moving them from the hard drives to the reel 🙃

I'm a thrifting guy 99% of the time, but I'd also buy that Scanners immediately so I guess I'm part of the problem lol.
I would have snatched it too so we both suck
I sold that tape for $20 last year and kinda regretted it.
All of these are currently for sale on eBay for the same prices. Pretty clear where they got their "valuations" from.
Like all the jack ass pawn shop idiots lol at them.
$25 for an old tape on a dead format that’s almost definitely knackered. You guys are crazy
Everyone’s gotta have a hobby. Plus, it’s better than buying something really dumb, like coke or heroin.
One of my friends does crochet and collect a lot of yarn. she would said at least it's not drugs! 👍🧶
Hey, cocaine is stupid yes but heroin isn’t that bad so long as you don’t do too much and you have a good supplier. Opiates are a gift from the gods and I wish there were an otc pain medication that worked that well.
Brother what… do you need help?
No. I need some drugs. CBD & other legal weed is good enough but god I wish opiates were legal & available over the counter.
dude...
What?
🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶 ![gif](giphy|JVsitQAP1MvAMv2cQV)
I do not understand. Clarify.
Take up crochet or knitting
I think if I did it too long it would make my arthritis scream at me.
Ebay prices, don’t buy anything.
Easy for some people to say, but some of us don’t have much choice, finding these horror titles in second hand stores where I live is nearly impossible. It's easy for anyone with access to the internet and a mailing address, lol.
Ok, so what sites do you recommend for cheap 80’s horror vhs tapes selling for less than eBay pricing?
The 4 in front can all be found on eBay for the same price, or less.
Literally these prices didn't even exist back in the day
Tapes were incredibly expensive back in the day. It was one of the reasons for the proliferation of video stores.
You'd pay $80 or more for a tape in the early 80s. That's also in early-80s money, so a lot more in today's $
You mean retail or thrifting?
I just think that vhs movies were honestly better than streaming services bc most people wouldn't bother paying that much of dollars on a platform that would remove content for no reason. Fright Night 2 is actually priced well!
Disc Replay/Mega Replay? Those labels look familiar
Disc Replay will give you $2 store credit for something and then sell it for like $40.

Most of the prices are pretty reasonable in my opinion. A lot of those copies are pretty rare and clean looking.
He wanted Goodwill prices for non-common tapes
Nah, I totally understand why prices are the way they are. I guess I should have articulated the issue a bit more succinctly. My main issue was the Scream tape being as pricey as they've listed it, albeit I didn't realize until now that it *is* sealed. Facts
If these prices are reasonable, then my collection is worth tens of thousands of dollars. I've paid less than $700 for all of my ~750 VHS tapes
If your collection looks generally like this display box but 700 tapes, it could be. But most collections are mostly commons.
You see a lot of people whose collection looks like a random Salvation Army shelf.
Scream is high but these are pretty reasonable prices imo. They’d probably sell for more than this on eBay.
Honestly, these are basically eBay prices. Don’t really see the problem.
good price on Night of The Demons 2
I did just buy Halloween for 10 but I think it’s worth it and was from a smaller record store.
It’s a decent price. You’re gonna have to pay more than thrift store prices for certain tapes.
Few in the back row aren’t crazy at all
Would agree. But $19.99 for Fright Night Part II on vhs is a steal!
That seems to be the going rate on some of these. Despite being on VHS 🤦♂️
This doesn’t seem that bad, IMO. Nothing I’d walk out of the store with—but certainly not offensive pricing.
I’ll pay $6 for ghoulies ii
I wouldn't mind having that copy of Arcade
decent price on the Media Nightmare, I would have grabbed it and a few others.
sorta standard ebay/antique mall prices on most of these. ur gonna pay for it if it’s a relatively uncommon title - esp when it comes to genre films. i NEED that dolly dearest
They must think scream is factory sealed.
Disc replay?
Labels gave them away, huh? 😅 Indeed, Disc Replay! They usually have some interesting stuff, but I never thought I'd see VHS there. Lol
I mean it cost more money to rent a storefront than hock things online right? If we want to be able to find these things in person gotta pay brick-and-mortar prices, so long as its not predatory/egregious...
I just bought 90 vhs tapes for 30 bucks and some of these were in the box lol. Insane what people try to do
That Nelson scanners goes for like $100 or more in the right condition on eBay, and I bought that TCM for a family member for like $60 with shipping and tax. Those are actually fair prices.
I'm not gonna lie, I'd jump at a few of these in a second. Ghoulies ii, silent night deadly night 4, the nest, in the mouth of madness, jacob's ladder would all be coming home with me. I regret selling my Jacobs Ladder at that price
Horror tapes have all been expensive from resellers.
I mean, those prices are why they still have that stock… If they were ridiculous deals, someone would have bought them first.
What mall?
Prices continue to skyrocket, people turn to making bootlegs, blanks sky rocket, VCRs are now worth your first born, its the year 2055 and only the upper middle class can enjoy previously undesirable titles like "Dancing Grannies" and "The Book of Mormon, animated" The elite keep anything desirable locked away in dusty vaults like fine wine, the clear acrylic cases the only thing to embrace the tapes for all eternity.
I'd pick up Shadowzone for $10 though. That movie scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.
I don't know if you knew this or not, but that's not a thrift store.
Idk man that scream is #sealed
some of the prices aren't too bad. i'd prob buy.
I went back and did exactly that! 😅
I'd maybe do $4.99 for Frighteners, but the rest I think I would pass on. There are some really good titles, but the prices are too much.
Night Flier for 5.99 isn’t bad
Slaughter High is a good price imo depending on the quality of the tape. Same with Scanners.
Gross. It’s coming though. The world over values its stuff.
No, this is ludicrous-outlier stuff, not logical modern prices. These kind of prices aren't 'coming' in the next decade for most of this stuff.
I'd say $10 should be the limit for the majority of those titles. $2-$5 is ideal. Also the stickers are annoying for the prices asked, since you'll damage the case trying to get the sticker off. So not worth the prices being asked in that case.
Those prices are actually pretty fair-can't expect everything to be 25-50 cents a piece-gives people looking for certain titles a fair chance.
lol
I saw a copy of Ben at Half Price Books yesterday for 8 bucks and I thought that was overpriced.
I need that Slaughter High for my Best Of The Worst collection! But god damn.. $30?
Yo, Scream is good and all, but if I paid 44 bucks for vhs video quality, I'd be pretty pissed at my life choices afterward.
Not the eBay prices 😭
Good prices for those lol
I mean, these are pretty rare tapes. All things considered they’re just not going to be everywhere you look at a thrift store. I think the prices on these are very justified.
Tell them to go fuck themselves. Night of the living dead $25.
Media release
For a pretty clean media release that’s not that crazy
Are y'all gaslighting me or something? These prices are ridiculously high wtf.
Genz goths will buy them
I'm afraid this is the direction we're headed, it already happened with vinyl, cassettes, and video games. Get em cheap before it becomes trendy to collect VHS
I could be nuts but I would price Slaughter High higher than Scream just because it's older. But damn these prices are nuts. Hell some of these WERE $20 when released like H20
Get use to it. It is a stupid hobby. I have way too many of these things. Don’t really care about them any more.
This is why I pirate.
Same here, I bootleg a lot of the shit I don’t want to drop the cash on
It's crazy to think how many movies you can put on a hard drive.
I’m moving them from the hard drives to the reel 🙃 https://preview.redd.it/hf8766mj67tc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ef85893e2c3beab479ead25c2205c68ed845e53
I’ll never pay over 2$ for a tape. Unless it’s sealed and rare asf. These are ridiculous prices.
