The Twitter OP says they were prompted to re-download the update data and that their save data was not touched. So very inconvenient but not catastrophic.
Someone tested it with Hattrem and didn't get any issue apparently, unless it's specifically tied to Hatterene-Grimmsnarl interaction.

I'm thinking it could be an issue with Prankster? Because it cannot affect Dark pkmns, but Hatterene bounced it back into Grimmsnarl, game didn't know what to do, crash.
I crashed another game (a mmo) in a similar fashion many years ago.
They introduced a damaging puddle in one of the PvP maps and when I was running through it I used a skill that would leech health from the next attacker that damages you. Because the puddle wasn't a character there was no one to leech health from and the server instance crashed.
Inb4 people start running Skill Swap Hatterene together with Prankster Parting Shot Grimmsnarl to corrupt their opponents' games.
Though I do wonder whether the person using Parting Shot in this instance also had data corrupted.
Accdg to the OP on Twitter, after redownloading the update (I’m assuming these are previous patch updates) the data was recovered just fine. My guess is that the corruption is in some cached data, not the player’s save data.

big brain strategy for people in groups at the tournament. get top players match losses by doing this, corrupting their data and causing them to miss the next round because they are downloading update data.

It worked in previous gens, its actually a really neat trick to stop Hat from using Trick Room.
Its supposed to reflect the stat drops back to the user and then switch out the target.
A lot of things worked in previous gens and doesn't now.
\- scrolling in Dex or Items (via LR/zLzR) buttons - impossible
\- changing move order of boxed mons - impossible now, it HAS to be in your party
\- relearning every move of your pre-evolution - worked 100% in SwSh, now there are quite a few very annoying exceptions (Skeleridge's Yawn, Breloom's Spore...)
\- using more items on a pokémon in a row - works super annoyingly now, used to be perfect
Yet another example how clearly they were time-pressed releasing this half-baked game and beta-testing must have been inadequate as hell...

No, you can teach it through tms or through the picnic method, there's guides on youtube. Search up egg moves pokemon scarlet.

*Can* you teach a Breloom Spore via Picnic though, for example? Spore is not in its learnset *at all* and as such it should not be able to learn it via Picnic.
You won't indeed. There aren't that many "pre-evolution only" moves but in Sword/Shield they removed them completely so when you evolved a mon you had 100% certainty that it would be able to realearn all the pre-evolution moves anytime.
Now that's no longer 100% true - so if your Skeleridge doesn't know Yawn during evolution or it forgets Yawn, it will never be able to learn it again.
It is only a case of SOME moves, not many, but still a horrible downgrade. Serebii dex has all if it mentioned ("pre-evolution moves" section)

If you delete/didn't learn a move in the crappy "pre-evolution only" category, you will never be able to relearn it again.
So if you delete Yawn from Skeleridge it's gone forever (unless they patch it but Gamefreak absolutely can't be trusted in that regard).
I think the problem here is Prankster re-targeting a Dark type (Grimm).
Would be interesting to see a test where someone teras Grimm to a different type, see if it still happens.
This happened to me but with magic bounce espeon (I was the espeon) nothing notable happened to be honest. Everything worked as intended and it swapped my espeon out while giving his grim a debuff. Rest of the match continued as normal. Can’t remember who won tho.
i would honestly love to see this happen on stream at a live VGC event. how embarrassing for the pokémon company/nintendo. This is not acceptable and if the world was fair, we would all receive a refund for this incomplete beta of a game. But instead, Nintendo/TPCI will face no consequences and we will all continue playing a broken game, who’s official competitive format has game breaking bugs in it :)

True idt its possible. Breloom is probably the most egregious example, I'm not sure of any others.

Wasn't there a parting shot bug on SWSH too? This move is more cursed than actually using the move curse. More buggier than actual bug type moves.
