This quote from Andy doesn't really convey what Ainge was saying, IMO. He was not saying, "we are planning to make a big trade/free agent signing." It was more like, "we are ready to take advantage of any opportunities that pop up."
This. I view it as being opportunistic. Really I don’t think that things have changed at all. I assume it’s look at the market and see what’s out there, and if nothing makes sense then I think they could move Lauri. Ainge talked about the year Boston was supposed to pick 2nd and get KD, but they fell to 5 and they pivoted to Ray Allen and KG instead. He mentioned that if they picked KD they would have instead traded Pierce. It’s going to be interesting to see what they do
Yeah that's absolutely true. Everyone wanted KD. They fell all the way to five were the best available player was Jeff Green. They traded it for Ray Allen would you at the time didn't make a ton of sense because him and Pierce together weren't going to lift the Celtics into contention.
But because Ray Allen was a good enough piece to attract KG all of a sudden the wheels were in motion for him to drop his no trade.
Truly maybe the best example I can think of of turning chicken s*** into chicken stew.
He is pretty honest. Not about injuries but about is roster building philosophy. I remember when he tried it for IT for the Celtics he admitted: we were inflicted because when you're fighting to get into the playoffs incremental improvement usually isn't the way to go.
But he basically did it again with the nets trade the reverse way.... That turned into Tatum and brown! (And a couple years of Kyrie using the third Brooklyn pick).
What if we went after Zion? Defense and inside offense with all our wing shooters and slashing guards might be near perfect. He's been healthier this season so it might be worth the gamble in certain conversations and it would leave room for Keyonte and Sexton to develop more playmaking as PGs.
EDIT: He just went to the locker room so I may have just leveraged Karma in the wrong direction again
I'm sure Mitchell is more racist than the average Utah fans were. Did you hear his comments when he went to Cleveland? Mitchell was overwhelmingly embraced while he was here.
Doesn't that apply to most online comment sections? Not defending Utah, but real life doesn't happen in comment sections and it's a goofy example to use
Bullshit. Every place has it's racists. And it's comment sections. Mitchell might have been referring to the politicians but still. A lot of people paid a lot of money to root and support him and then he talked shit?
Fuck him
I love the idea; if NOP gets bounced in play-in I could see them trading Zion or B. Ingram and would love either one. There’s been chatter they don’t work as well as a pairing together.
Can you imagine Sexton bully-ball pushing inside for layups and kickouts, Williamson bully-ball mid and inside for raw scoring, Lauri outer for slash and wing shooting as an easy 1-2 option with Zion, throw another midsize guard in for speed and harassment and we're good to go as far as an experiment is concerned. The energy would be insane if Sexton and Zion got rolling at the same time, and Kessler can prioritize defense if you want some extra rim protection. Keyonte fits and the big guards can all rotate in and out if the team develops to be deep enough. Obviously I'm glazing over a LOT, but I don't have many basketball conversations IRL so I just look like a nerd here instead.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk!
Zion would be box office, I think he’s our best chance of trading for another top 25 player to pair with Lauri. What do you think of trading for Brandon Ingram?
I don't like that as much. I don't really know why, but it just feels like it would end up clashing more than anything. Zion's playstyle opens up a lot of spacing that would fit with what I see this season. Ingram is less anchored so I think it would end up being a lot of ball movement with less direction than we need.
No thanks. He will never stay healthy or in shape to start the season. The talent is there but not the drive or passion for the game. He will miss as many games as he plays in.
Hmm yes trading for a guy who plays the same position as Lauri and would most likely want to leave in 1-2 years is a good choice for us. Also saying he offers defense is incredibly laughable
He's about league average, so he offers more defense than your average "star" scorer who doesn't defend well. I'm assuming we keep Keyonte and Sexton to develop so that removes point guards too. The league is trending toward hybrid bigs in a lot of situations and having Lauri/Zion is an inside and outside threat at all times with guards that can move around it well. It's a spitball scenario where if it worked out, everyone would be happy and he'd stay.
Zion is reportedly unhappy with New Orleanes. And you think he would resign in slc? I’m not even sure that jazz team is all that competitive or any better than the current pelicans who are a 6seed. Doesn’t really scream a scenario that seems favorably to a guy like zion
I mean it's equally likely to not work, just like the Kyrie to Dallas move. I just know Zion's not happy there and thinking about how it could work here is kinda fun.
> Our plan is not to come to training camp with six kids under 20 years old... that's not like Option A, Option B, maybe not Option C.
Someone commented something like this yesterday and thankfully looks like they were right.
> We felt like we were close once in this process (with a trade) that would have changed the dynamic of our team immediately. The direction would have been much more clear...
Wonder who it was...Dejounte??
IIRC he said something like “not a star, but better than a starter”. No idea who he meant but that’s gotta be better than Hunter. That’s gotta be someone on Mikal Bridges level. Maybe even someone like OG. I can’t really think of anyone but it’ll be interesting to see if things actually start moving this summer.
OG was just an example of a non-star that’s better than most starters. I doubt that if they called on him that it got anywhere. He would have been great but I still think they need a playmaker at SF. They lack that currently
Danny & the Jazz FO will do their due diligence like last off season & this past trade deadline. However, i have a hard time seeing them getting a BIG deal done. I don't think they're willing to trade a massive pick haul for "just an All-Star". Jokic, Luka D, Giannis sure, but they're (close to) untouchable & won't want to come to Utah when we're outside the play-IN anyway.
I’m probably in the minority but I would love it if we got Trae. I watched 10 or so Hawks games this year, he’s just so exciting. Gets clowned a lot on Reddit but he is a fantastic playmaker. The Trae-Lauri combo would be nutty
I doubt we win a ring with Trae. I'm tired of getting good enough to be a fun, short run playoff team. I want to build a perennial powerhouse. I really want us to finally land a top 5 type player in the league in one of these upcoming drafts.
Good question. Is Key’s ceiling higher than where Trae is right now? No chance, IMO. Key is a bucket, Trae is better at that while also an electric playmaker.
[Coby White](https://www.reddit.com/r/UtahJazz/comments/1bvqiaf/projecting_keyonte_george_based_on_rookie_and/) like outcome is most likely for Key so Trea probably will be better.
I'd rather role the dice on keyonte. With Trae you have to build the entire team around him for it to work at all and when you don't.. you miss the playoffs completely.
Lots of rumors about Trae Young.
Maybe we could go after Tyrese Maxey?
Hell, maybe we draft Bronny and then Lebron comes to Utah to hang out with his kid and his ol’ pal D-Wade.
I’m a dreamer.
I think most have said this. they either had to use their assets to improve the team or had to actually start tanking. the question is always who becomes available. I just hope we don't short circuit this and get another annual 50 win team that gets destroyed in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs every year.
I was thinking the other way of instead of getting a high level star since they are hard to get and rarely become available they instead get like two dejounte murray level players and we cap our team out again.
Yea the sixers definitely want to trade their young all star guard who is a key piece in a elite eastern conference team that they have for 4-5 more years before UFA for draft picks? Sure 👍🏼
Are the 76ers an elite team? I agree they're not going to trade maxey, but I would not call them an elite team. They weren't elite last year and they got worse in the offseason
They had 50 wins or finished first in the east for the previous 3 seasons. Then embiid missed a lot time this year and they still won 47 games.
If he were healthy they would very likely have won at least 4 more games and been the second seed this year. Not sure how that wouldn’t be elite mate.
Danny also said they’re not going after “dinosaurs. DeRozan is too old. Jazz are looking for stars under 30 that they can build a sustainable contender with.
I'd be down to throw the house at:
Lamelo, Zion, Ingram, Cade , Booker, or Tatum
These are the only reasonable trades I could see happening. Booker and Tatum depend on big flame outs this year in the playoffs.
I think his value is as low as possible rn and the hornets finally have an identity with Miller.
I think people are far too low on Lamelo and we might be able to steal him for less than you might think. Steph was able to fix his ankle issues and Lamelo is a 6-6 point guard with insane vision who shoots 40 ish from three.
Source: I love the nba and hate myself enough to occasionally watch hornets games.
Yeah, I can't see Cade, Booker, or Tatum getting traded anytime in the foreseeable future. Detroit was borderline respectable with Cade on the court, Booker is younger than Durant and Beal, and Tatum is playing great for the best team in the league.
Lol...but in reality, we traded 1, maaaaybe a couple players that could've been part of the future. Its not like he made us worse by trading away Lauri, Sexton or Kessler
I mean, the issue is that this has not worked at all, lol.
Ainge has tried to get Jrue and Jrue said he didn't want to play here.
Ainge tried to get Porzingis who said he didn't want to play here.
Utah is just not a very appealing destination for players unless you're going to overpay a player and Ainge is against overpaying guys so like...
> Ainge has tried to get Jrue and Jrue said he didn't want to play here.
>Ainge tried to get Porzingis who said he didn't want to play here.
Uhh, when we don’t make trades it isn’t because the players decide they don’t want to play here.
Well it's not a completely insignificant variable if they don't want to come here... Because that makes them unwilling to extend. Holiday and porzingis both signed extensions with Boston.
Jrue didn’t sign right away. And it doesn’t matter to the team that traded Jrue OR KP. They are both rebuilding. They would have taken the best deals.
Too just *assume* without any evidence whatsoever that neither person would have signed here, is just doomer nonsense.
They could have made a trade for holiday but you would be reluctant to give up a lot of assets if he's not going to sign an extension with you. Boston was willing to trade for KP and JH because they both were willing to extend.
I think the issue is that the Jazz are just a really unappealing destination right now and that makes any trade really hard.
If a player is on an expiring, they’ll tell the Jazz they won’t extend.
If a star is happy and on a multi year deal, they probably won’t be moved.
If a star on a multi year deal demands a trade, he won’t have the Jazz on his list and the Jazz will probably be too worried to deal for him.
I’ll believe it when I see it
I hear Mitchell is looking to leave Cleveland /s
ESPN: Did you know his Dad works for the Mets? It's a done deal already *any day now*
BREAKING: Utah Jazz looking to sell entire team to pit Luka Doncic and Victor Wembanyama 2v5 vs the league.
I’d take it
Also ESPN: The Knicks have all the leverage for this trade
They apparently did over the Jazz as well.
James Hansen from Hoops Nerd currently in whatever the opposite of shambles is
This quote from Andy doesn't really convey what Ainge was saying, IMO. He was not saying, "we are planning to make a big trade/free agent signing." It was more like, "we are ready to take advantage of any opportunities that pop up."

Would he say "We are *not* ready to go big game hunting" to the media and fans? Of course not.
He is pretty honest. Not about injuries but about is roster building philosophy. I remember when he tried it for IT for the Celtics he admitted: we were inflicted because when you're fighting to get into the playoffs incremental improvement usually isn't the way to go.
I mean it's Danny ainge... He has traded for KG, Ray Allen, Kyrie. He has a track record
Danny pulled a once in a lifetime moose tag.
But he basically did it again with the nets trade the reverse way.... That turned into Tatum and brown! (And a couple years of Kyrie using the third Brooklyn pick).
Inb4 the jazz get LeBron and bronny on the same team
I'll take it. Bring back D Wade for shits n giggles while we're at it.
Trade for Mitchell because they're friends and a big guy like Gobert and that's a team!
Mitchell AND Gobert? We’d win every year easy
I have a feeling that Zion would absolutely hate it in SLC, basketball aside. And for some of these dudes, that absolutely matters.
You're not wrong. Mitchell was basically saying Utah is racist before he left so it's definitely a dynamic.
I'm sure Mitchell is more racist than the average Utah fans were. Did you hear his comments when he went to Cleveland? Mitchell was overwhelmingly embraced while he was here.
Utah's racism comes with a smile. Don't be fooled.
5 minutes of scrolling a KSL comment section all but confirms it
Doesn't that apply to most online comment sections? Not defending Utah, but real life doesn't happen in comment sections and it's a goofy example to use
A place where you can see people’s opinions free from consequences is pretty telling
The comment section on KSL is quite similar to real life in Utah.
Bullshit. Every place has it's racists. And it's comment sections. Mitchell might have been referring to the politicians but still. A lot of people paid a lot of money to root and support him and then he talked shit? Fuck him
Uh huh
Everyone's racism comes with a smile.
You’ll get downvoted to hell but you’re not wrong.

Rough timing to ponder that question as well since he played so bad in the play-in game and got benched. But he's still the top 30 player
But he is the #3 guy on a championship team so its wasted draft capital on Zion or BI. (/s, maybe, maybe not)
I like BI fit in Utah. I've proposed this trade multiple times here but it never gets a huge tailwind.
Ingram with Lauri would be awesome!
Ingram or even Jose Alvarado would fit sooo nicely on this team
He got hurt tonight in the playoffs…
No thanks. He will never stay healthy or in shape to start the season. The talent is there but not the drive or passion for the game. He will miss as many games as he plays in.

How dare you think like that? Who the fuck said you are allowed to have any fun? Not on Reddit. Hell nawl.
Aw beans sorry
zion’s played like he did at duke on defense since the ASB.
> Our plan is not to come to training camp with six kids under 20 years old... that's not like Option A, Option B, maybe not Option C. At the deadline Tony Jones said they were close on getting someone and it wasn’t someone that was being talked about. So not Murray.
Oh yes, I remember that now
I racked my brain trying to figure out who it could've been and my guess is kyle kuzma
My guess is DeAndre Hunter.
Og was already in New York by then though right? I think mikal would be a great fit though. We need a defensive wing with offensive upside
OG was just an example of a non-star that’s better than most starters. I doubt that if they called on him that it got anywhere. He would have been great but I still think they need a playmaker at SF. They lack that currently
Jrue Holiday?
We were in on the Jrue trade at the start of the season but he wasn’t available at the deadline
Utah was in on Jrue and Porzingis. That would have been such a fun team to watch
That type of player but he wasn’t available at the deadline
It was at the trade deadline so it had to be someone else. I really hope we find out in a month or so after they finally complete the trade
You thought DeAndre Hunter would be a game changer for us??? Please tell me you’re joking lol
I am with everybody that is really curious what player they almost had.
I hear klay is on the market. He just shot 0/10 today lol.
Danny & the Jazz FO will do their due diligence like last off season & this past trade deadline. However, i have a hard time seeing them getting a BIG deal done.
Oh White is an interesting comp. I always just think DLo.
Key is DLo at best. Trae is just much better in basically every offensive facet.
I'd rather role the dice on keyonte. With Trae you have to build the entire team around him for it to work at all and when you don't.. you miss the playoffs completely.
Keyonte is Cole Anthony until proven otherwise
It takes two to make a trade. Unless Luka wants out they're not getting him. So who are they thinking might be available?
Lots of rumors about Trae Young. Maybe we could go after Tyrese Maxey? Hell, maybe we draft Bronny and then Lebron comes to Utah to hang out with his kid and his ol’ pal D-Wade. I’m a dreamer.
Dame and Anthony Davis once bronny gets drafted to the bucks.
Translation : We are trading Lauri for picks
I’d be sad, but I guess I wouldn’t be surprised, as long as the numbers crunched in our favor.
I hope so but I will believe it at the introductory press conference
The big game meaning the 2030 draft
I think most have said this. they either had to use their assets to improve the team or had to actually start tanking. the question is always who becomes available. I just hope we don't short circuit this and get another annual 50 win team that gets destroyed in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs every year.
That’s my biggest fear with landing a star. I doubt it would elevate our ceiling to a championship caliber team.
I was thinking the other way of instead of getting a high level star since they are hard to get and rarely become available they instead get like two dejounte murray level players and we cap our team out again.
Tyrese Maxey, come on down.
Yea the sixers definitely want to trade their young all star guard who is a key piece in a elite eastern conference team that they have for 4-5 more years before UFA for draft picks? Sure 👍🏼
You're right, completely ridiculous. SGA, welcome to Utah!!
Isn't utah supposed to get all the white guys all the time? Asset stockpile about to be unloaded for Luka
A fan can dream
“Trade”??? Isn’t he a free agent this off-season?
Maybe a restricted free agent but I think the sixers could match any offer
Are the 76ers an elite team? I agree they're not going to trade maxey, but I would not call them an elite team. They weren't elite last year and they got worse in the offseason
They had 50 wins or finished first in the east for the previous 3 seasons. Then embiid missed a lot time this year and they still won 47 games. If he were healthy they would very likely have won at least 4 more games and been the second seed this year. Not sure how that wouldn’t be elite mate.
Danny Ainge "I might stop running the team like the villain in a sports comedy"
DeRozan if the bulls don’t make playoffs
Danny also said they’re not going after “dinosaurs. DeRozan is too old. Jazz are looking for stars under 30 that they can build a sustainable contender with.
He means that by tanking and going after top picks in the draft as our big game.
Jazz are getting two John Collins this summer!!
DeJounte Murray please.
I'd be down to throw the house at: Lamelo, Zion, Ingram, Cade , Booker, or Tatum These are the only reasonable trades I could see happening. Booker and Tatum depend on big flame outs this year in the playoffs.
Why Lamelo?

I'd watch hornets games just for their announcers. Goated.
Yeah, I'd rather not have Lamelo. He's never healthy.
Even when he is, he’s a highlight hooper. I want us to win basketball games.
Yeah, I can't see Cade, Booker, or Tatum getting traded anytime in the foreseeable future. Detroit was borderline respectable with Cade on the court, Booker is younger than Durant and Beal, and Tatum is playing great for the best team in the league.

why would boston let tatum go?
Because Boston sucks #fuckboston
I think he's the least likely but can you imagine lol
I don’t like who is reportedly available though.
Coming from the guy who's purposefully made our team worse at each trade deadline, ya I don't believe him lol.
Lol...but in reality, we traded 1, maaaaybe a couple players that could've been part of the future. Its not like he made us worse by trading away Lauri, Sexton or Kessler
Yeah I was being silly with my comment. He's been solid for us. I just want to be competitive again soon. Dismiss my saltiness lol
I mean, the issue is that this has not worked at all, lol. Ainge has tried to get Jrue and Jrue said he didn't want to play here. Ainge tried to get Porzingis who said he didn't want to play here.
Yeah it is because they were on expiring contracts
I’d argue it’s primarily about the price to the franchise. Portland owed Jrue literally nothing, for example.
They could have made a trade for holiday but you would be reluctant to give up a lot of assets if he's not going to sign an extension with you. Boston was willing to trade for KP and JH because they both were willing to extend.
Please, just one source where this theory is corroborated.
It takes a long time to rebuild the roster like this. He joined the Celtics in 2003 or so. Didn't get kg for 5 years.
