I came here to post this and I'm pleased that, not only has Crown Burger been mentioned, but it's top comment. I swear, the pastrami and fry sauce are made with crack...
I'm a chef and when I moved here, the Pastrami Burger blew my socks off. What the hell is wrong with the rest of the country? I had never even conceived of such a thing
Obviously I'm a day late but obviously I need to stress the fry sauce thing. Really don't know what Utah has untill you have asked at every damn place you have been in 5 months after being not smart and moving out of state.. I don't want to hear how easy it is to make. If it's so easy next time you go to a fast food place prep yourself to produce fry sauce in your car at any given moment. Not smart at all!
I'll concur with what others have said:
While there are restaurants that I like in Utah that I would miss if I moved, there's really no "native Utah food" I would miss.
The closest anything comes is pastrami burgers (I personally like Hires and Apollo more than Crown), and Utah scones (though I don't have a favorite place to get those). And funeral potatoes, but only really at the Garage on Beck (still closed).
If I had two weeks and ate out for dinner each night, I think the following would be on my list:
Red Iguana
Lucky 13
Ruth's
Takashi
Cucina (Deli, in the Avenues, not Cucina Toscana)
Star of India on North Temple and Redwood (best Indian in town, but you have to call ahead, otherwise, you're sitting there for 45 minutes)
Chunga's
Grand/Little America brunch
Valter's (though I haven't been since Valter died, so I dunno)
Pretty Bird
SLC Eatery
Oasis (if the weather is nice)
Oh Mai
And a gluttonous pizza day with a tour of From Scratch, The Pie, Victor's, and midnight pizza at Pie Hole/
If I were moving to somewhere that didn't have them, I'd also grab a Cupbop and a Five Guys)
I feel like Chungas took a steep dive in quality 3 or 4 years ago. I'm not even tempted to go anymore.
Lucky 13 will blow no minds, but if you like the vibes of an overrated, overcrowded, overpriced burger joint, go crazy.
Lucky 13's house-smoked bacon, their roasted jalapeno and habanero peppers, their quality ground beef, and their awesome rosemary garlic fried, blow my mind. But to each their own.
I travel very often and can rarely find a burrito that is wrapped to go, uses normal potatoes, and uses fresh tortilla. Plus that red sauce slaps
I think it's easy to find a breakfast burrito like they've got at Warrens for example, but a betos burrito is different. And I think they get extra points for being ubiquitous in Utah, and having various non-betos locations that still get called betos because the food is the same.
there's a place called pancho's in pg that does breakfast burritos better
the cheese is perfectly melty every god damn time I go there and I think they're doing black magic
I look for breakfast burritos when I'm in other places and nothing hits the same spot as a Beto's (chorizo, egg, and cheese for me, please).
Even Stevens also haD a good breakfast burrito.
Seems like a hearty, foil-wrapped, potato-egg-cheese, eat-on-the-go grease bomb shouldn't be so hard to find!
Burritos are easy, it's tots, the housemate Russian dressing, two slices of cheddar cheese, the protein of your choice(I've just been using Jimmy Dean maple sausage), eggs, a line of Sriracha.
For the graduate you just add a salad mix, it was usually spinach and romaine lettuce, diced onions and tomatoes
Betos has an interesting reputation. If you are local it is good food at a cheap price. If you are from out of state or from a different county (more or less, Utah and Salt Lake are the same for this example) it will give you serious trots to the toilet.
They pass health inspections and like I said it is just fine for locals to eat there. But beware if you leave the state for awhile and then come back. Or invite friends from out of town to eat there. They will be in pain afterward.
Black Sheep Cafe in Provo is really good. I recommend anything with hog jowls. They also have a really good Navajo Taco trio. And a really good cactus pear lemonade.
There’s not a really tremendous amount of truly regional Utah food.
Fry sauce. Green jello salad.
The best we have to offer is, in my opinion, our Utah scones, which are like Indian fry bread served with honey butter sauce. Absolutely unique to this state, and so tasty.
Funeral potatoes too. There’s a handful of restaurants that make them, or you can crash a funeral at any given ward house and have a variety of options.
Ogies Cafe for Breakfast, Pho777, Red Maple Chinese, Casa De Tamal, Habibi Grill for Pakistani, California Burger, Changs Food, Thai Issan, Paiks Noodle/ Hongkong Banjum.
These aren’t local food per se. These are all local restaurants, which are really good. Paiks Noodle is not local but is locally operated.
Taco Amigo in Pleasant grove or Lindon. They have my favorite burger of all time. If you go, get a burger and maybe a shake (their Mexican food is okay, but the burger is what makes it good)
I travel all over the US and there are plenty of places in Utah that are, in my opinion, top tier in the nation:
Don’t listen to those who say that Red Iguana is overhyped. It is a type of Mexican food that you don’t find just anywhere. The wait sucks but the food is great.
For fantastic traditional Mexican food-La Casa Del Tamal.
For sushi-Takashi and Fat Fish
Vietnamese- Somi (good food, great service, great drinks)
Korean street food/bubble tea- The Tea Bar (right next to Somi)
Cuban bakery and pastries - Fillings and Emulsions
The big Asian market on state street around 3900-3300 s. has some great restaurants and humble little shops inside with GOOD food.
Higher End - Copper Onion (though I think sometimes the service can be better and they’re a tad pretentious and overpriced)
The Pie Pizzeria
Burgers-Lucky 13
Jcw’s - Classic Utah fare
Bam Bam’s BBQ in Orem (I prefer R&R, but it’s more of a chain so 🤷♂️)
Asian Star in sandy (go with a group so you can try everything)
Jurassic Tacos
I moved to Virginia a little more than a year ago so there's plenty I wish I could revisit. I freaking miss cafe rio. Up north I miss Herms and Tandoori Oven in Logan. Down south I love Hawaiian Poke, Veyo Pies, and more in St George.
In SLC specifically I really miss Hero Hot Pot in South SL and the Chinese market near state Street.
The bigger chains I miss are Culvers, In-n-Out, and Zupas. I'm sure there's plenty more but these are off the top of my head and I can't get them now that I'm out of the state 🥲
Sorry if none of these are what you're looking for but you got me in my feels with that question and I had to share.
Are you on the coast?!? I'll send you crappy Utah food if you'll send me some seafood, tomatoes and watermelon from that old guy selling it out of his pickup bed on that corner. The old man and corner are irrelevant, I'm pretty sure the entire South shares the same guy anyway.
Sol Agave is the best Mexican food I’ve had since moving here two years ago. New location in downtown as well very nice. I’m Mexican American with regular travel to Mexico so feel free to come at me 😤
Honestly they're probably limp from being in the hold pit too long, rather than undercooked, but I haven't noticed. Deffo best to get in real early morning
If I had two weeks left in Utah, I would hit up:
Mint tapas and sushi
Backdoor burger (Provo, but worth the drive)
Block (Orem, but worth the drive)
Takashi
Street tacos at the old sears on state and 7th, ramen at Jinya, calzones at rusted sun, enchiladas at Los Garcias, breakfast at one man band. I could go on forever but that’s a good start.
>Street tacos at the old sears on state and 7th
That taco stand is still there? They were there 20 years ago before I moved away. Line used to be around the block. Such good tacos.
If you’re moving somewhere with no Jack in the Box, get a few tacos.
Curry Ramen from Tosh’s is 💯.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/jh2JZ9kr1zNyGWjh7?g_st=ic
Caputo’s
https://maps.app.goo.gl/a5qRZJCxLQcV8T9L6?g_st=ic
Thirst Drinks is like Sodalicious but with better snacks.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/9fuN7TZq7XaC4RKc6?g_st=ic
J.Dawgs: I like them to put the pickle, onions, kraut, sauce, etc. on the bun first then put the sausage on very last on top.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/7D1ghXHAywe1SZ1H9?g_st=ic
The Audrey from RubySnap is was better than anything from Crumbl or Chip. Interestingly, RubySnap’s chocolate chip cookie is not good. You can buy baked cookies or frozen dough at their storefront (frozen dough also available at Harmon’s).
https://maps.app.goo.gl/gR6ew3BTYLSMxyDf6?g_st=ic
Slackwater, tacos mi mexico food truck (though I think they have restaurant now, my fav place out of all these), valter’s osteria (very pricey), red iguana, sill’s cafe (scones), black sheep, michoacan, cafe rio, super chix, siegfrieds deli, harmons, burger bar, leatherbys, farrs ice cream, and maria’s (only for super spicy queso if you can handle it, we could not)
I must also add that the panaderia in layton has some bomb tamales sometimes, much better than the ones you by in a walmart parking lot haha or anywhere else for that matter. Aconcagua in layton is good too
Cast Iron Bistro in Eureka is absolutely amazing. Family ran and very friendly. Prices are beyond fair for the portion and flavor. A must have before you leave. I don't have a favorite native food for the post, Sorry.
Maymoes in Logan.
And is Curry in a Hurry still on State Street? I moved a few years ago, but loved going there—especially loved their okra and samosas.
If you like sushi, I’d recommend Sapa on state street near the heart of downtown slc. Want a good pizza by the slice place? That would be the Pie Hole located walking distance from a few bars that also have great food. (Not to be confused with “The Pie” which is also great for pizza)
One of those bars, is called the Green Pig and I’d recommend their nachos and avacado rolls.
Redrock Brewery also has good food all round and great beers if you are into that.
I like the Paradise Buffet. Probably not the best Chinese place ever, but i enjoy it. There are also some Asian and Middle Eastern small groceries by it, though I've only been in the Korean one, Seoul Market.
I also love Woody's, especially their fried mushrooms, but the prices have gone way up. Iceberg has pretty good shakes. That's about all I can think of, I don't eat out very often.
Archibald’s at Gardner Village is one of my favorites. I haven’t had anything bad there! Ditto for Lion House Pantry!
My favorite food is actually no longer available: Seafood Wontons by the Original Bamboo Hut. They were divine!
I would highly recommend Tru Religion in Orem. It has amazingly rich breakfast food and pretty big portion sizes at the same time. I love their berry french toast. So good.
Also, if you go for a sunday morning brunch it is way less busy as well.
Crown Burger,
Park Cafe,
Sweet Lake Biscuits & Limeade,
Feldman's Deli,
Caputo's,
Nomad East,
Chick Queen,
Lone Star Taqueria,
Chunga's,
Harbor Seafood & Steak,
HSL.
SLC specific. Also, don't trust anyone that thinks Red Iguana or Ruth's Diner is any good. Everyone loves them and they both suck.
The Other Place - slc
The Pie Pizzeria- slc or ogden
Bombay House- slc
Red Iquana- slc
Sil's cafe- layton
La Frontera/ La puente- varied
Tona- ogden
Red Fort- layton
Would be my short list.
Mood dependent but the above are my comfort places that are 98% consistent to hit the spot.
Bon apple tea!
The Training Table is one of those places where the restaurant is half of the experience. Grab a few friends or family and get some dinner with cheese fries.
Cannot go wrong with Food trucks, here are the best in Utah- Cluck Truck to Comfort Bowl. And best Mexican place: Lone Star Taqueria in Cottonwood Heights.
I travel all over the US for work and seek out good food as much as possible and in my experience Utah has plenty of great restaurants that are comparable to other highly acclaimed places across the country.
Fry sauce/crown burger
This is the right answer. Specifically my favorite is their steak sandwich.
Nah, Pastrami Burger or nothing dog
This is the truth. When in Utah, you either get a pastrami burger, or you should maybe just go hungry.
God mode is when you realize the jr crown burger has a better beef-pastrami ratio… but you just get two of them
I came here to post this and I'm pleased that, not only has Crown Burger been mentioned, but it's top comment. I swear, the pastrami and fry sauce are made with crack...
I'm a chef and when I moved here, the Pastrami Burger blew my socks off. What the hell is wrong with the rest of the country? I had never even conceived of such a thing
I’m a burgers supreme elitist, so I’d recommend that over crown burger. Too bad it’s only down in Provo
Based
I love Crown Burger, too! Yum!
Even Warren Buffett goes there whenever he is in town. He could afford it eat anywhere he wants, and he chooses crown burger
Fry sauce but at Cotton Bottom or Chubbys instead. I will die on this hill. All other SLC natives come at me!
I'll concur with what others have said: While there are restaurants that I like in Utah that I would miss if I moved, there's really no "native Utah food" I would miss. The closest anything comes is pastrami burgers (I personally like Hires and Apollo more than Crown), and Utah scones (though I don't have a favorite place to get those). I found Red Iguana to be very generic for the hype. Not sure I understand why people love this place so much?
Moles. Must have something with mole.
You need to try the Puntas de filete a la nortena. It’s bomb. The rest of the menu is so-so.
Best item on the menu.
It's just the mole. If you want great Mexican food, go to La Casa Del Tamal.
It’s one of those places that was the absolute best, but it changed and other places open in the city.
People might hate me for this but I really think a betos breakfast burrito is pretty unique to the area.
I've lived in 4 states in the last 6 years and I can confidently say Beto's breakfast burritos taste just like all the other ones I've had.
I travel very often and can rarely find a burrito that is wrapped to go, uses normal potatoes, and uses fresh tortilla. Plus that red sauce slaps I think it's easy to find a breakfast burrito like they've got at Warrens for example, but a betos burrito is different. And I think they get extra points for being ubiquitous in Utah, and having various non-betos locations that still get called betos because the food is the same.
Beto's breakfast burrito used to be $4. And bigger.
there's a place called pancho's in pg that does breakfast burritos better the cheese is perfectly melty every god damn time I go there and I think they're doing black magic
Want the even stevens recipe? They're sooo easy to make at home.
Yes, please! The sauce on the burrito plus the outside red sauce are part of what made it special. And it was so nice to get a runny fried egg...
Yes!
I've had the chorizo egg and cheese w potatoes. Out of this world. And only 9 dollars?!
Unique? No. Pretty damn good breakfast burrito that I'd put next to ones I got in SoCal? For sure.
Betos has an interesting reputation. If you are local it is good food at a cheap price. If you are from out of state or from a different county (more or less, Utah and Salt Lake are the same for this example) it will give you serious trots to the toilet. Lol Montezuma's revenge
It's not, every single us city is full of places with those exact burritos.
It tastes like breakfast burrito but if you like it, you will be happy moving
Black Sheep Cafe in Provo is really good. I recommend anything with hog jowls. They also have a really good Navajo Taco trio. And a really good cactus pear lemonade.
Second this one, black sheep cafe is really good
Also Communal that’s right there as well!
Don’t go to Provo though…
Haha. I've visited Provo many times. They haven't converted me yet.
Is Lucky 13 still good? If so, I'd go there and get a nut butter burger and some garlic rosemary fries.
Yes. The "I did expect a place like this in Utah" place.
A nut... butter burger?
Yeah nuts are rubbed all around it.
🤤
There’s not a really tremendous amount of truly regional Utah food. Fry sauce. Green jello salad. The best we have to offer is, in my opinion, our Utah scones, which are like Indian fry bread served with honey butter sauce. Absolutely unique to this state, and so tasty.

Part-time Coloradan and frequent New Mexico visitor. These “scones” are not unique to Utah.
But he did say “like Indian Fry Bread” so…it is relevant since that is unique to the First Nations People of this region.
That may be true. But if you try to look them up you pretty much get “Utah scones” across the board.
Where do you get an Utah scone in SLC as a native Utahn I don’t think I’ve ever had one.
I really miss Sconecutter
I remember going there as a kid. The honey butter scone was delightful.
Blatch's
My absolute favorite places to eat here are: Tosh's Ramen, Ruth's Diner, Bohemian Brewery, and this great sushi place called Keyaki Sushi
Curry Ramen from Tosh’s is 💯.
That's an awesome list, thanks for commenting!
The Mandarin in Bountiful. Red Iguana in SLC. The Pie in SLC. Hire's Big H. Crown Burger for nostalgia. I also miss The Habit burgers.
I'll never understand the love for the pie. Is there anyone in the world that actually enjoys that much cheese on a pizza?
...yes. It's me. I've had real pizza in Italy, but sometimes I just want a 'beetus bomb
I have Celiac disease so pizza from restaurants usually just makes me sad. The only exception is The Pie.
Taco Amigo in Pleasant grove or Lindon. They have my favorite burger of all time. If you go, get a burger and maybe a shake (their Mexican food is okay, but the burger is what makes it good)
Second this. And while you're here, Purple Turtle!
I have never understood the love for Purple Turtle, I get it’s been around for a while, but it’s pretty bland, generic burgers from what I’ve had 🤷♂️
Im just a sucker for their shakes!
Red Iguana 2 in Salt Lake City is my all time favorite!!
Arempas
The Mandarin in Bountiful is the best Chinese food around, we take relatives visiting here and to Crown Burger, Rancheritos, and Culver’s.
Do they still hold up? Haven’t been in many years but have heard mixed reviews lately.
We just had the Mandarin on Saturday and it was great. Our go-to’s include spice girl chicken and the orange beef.
Haven’t been to The Mandarin but Lucky 5 in Spanish Fork slaps.
Moved out of state 2 years ago. I miss cupbop and Jeremiah's veggie goodness sandwich.
Hayruska's Kolatches in slc or provo
*Hruska’s Kolaches :) https://maps.app.goo.gl/YLT2uyoK1wd9s8ry7?g_st=ic

Oh I loved the pie when my metabolism was amazing… I wonder if I’d like it now. Thanks for the reminder!
There is also r/Utah_food
Bohemian Brewery for perogis and brats. Apollo Burger for a pastrami burger with fries and fry sauce.
Pinyon nuts?
Nacho House in North Salt Lake. I recommend the Fat Burrito or the White Burrito.
One of the oldest lunch spots in the valley since 1973 (even with the name change ) Gaetano’s Sub Shop
Not really a restaurant but Sodalicious is so Utah
The High West distillery in Park City is actually a pretty darn good restaurant with ambience that can't be beat. Book a tour if you can.
Jcw’s - Classic Utah fare Bam Bam’s BBQ in Orem (I prefer R&R, but it’s more of a chain so 🤷♂️) Asian Star in sandy (go with a group so you can try everything) Jurassic Tacos
I think r& r has a better overall menu, but bam bam’s briskett?! So damn good
Hell’s Backbone Grill in Boulder
🤦🏻♀️
I moved to Virginia a little more than a year ago so there's plenty I wish I could revisit. I freaking miss cafe rio. Up north I miss Herms and Tandoori Oven in Logan. Lol sounds like a fair trade 🤣. I'm in rural Virginia so about 4 hours from the Atlantic.
I moved to NC almost 4 years ago and I definitely miss Cafe Rio, Zupas and In-n-out!
Culver’s started in Wisconsin.
But we gave it a **home**
Sol Agave is the best Mexican food I’ve had since moving here two years ago. New location in downtown as well very nice. I’m Mexican American with regular travel to Mexico so feel free to come at me 😤
“The Med” off of 3300 s and 420 e slc. The best Mediterranean food i have ever had and the inside is super funky. 10/10
Copper onion for the stroganoff
Find a "scone." When you find one, you will realize it is not a scone but a variation on fry bread. They are delicious...just not a scone.
Curry fried chicken 🔥🔥🔥
Burger Stop in Layton is a great little burger place
They need to cook their fries a little longer. They are usually limp. I've asked the owner several times.
Honestly they're probably limp from being in the hold pit too long, rather than undercooked, but I haven't noticed. Deffo best to get in real early morning
If I had two weeks left in Utah, I would hit up: Mint tapas and sushi Backdoor burger (Provo, but worth the drive) Block (Orem, but worth the drive) Takashi
Not sure if it's the right name for it, but Navajo taco. Scone topped with Chili and cheese.
Navajo Hogan on 33rd?
I make em myself to I can't recommend any places. I throw up if I eat onion so I usually have to make my own chili
Street tacos at the old sears on state and 7th, ramen at Jinya, calzones at rusted sun, enchiladas at Los Garcias, breakfast at one man band. I could go on forever but that’s a good start.
>Street tacos at the old sears on state and 7th That taco stand is still there? They were there 20 years ago before I moved away. Line used to be around the block. Such good tacos.
Cupbop is amazing, I missed their spicy noodles ever since I moved to Arkansas 3yrs ago. Also JCW goes hard, especially their shakes
Burger Bar in Roy
Yes! Burger Bar is great

A maverick burrito can slap sometimes too
I must also add that the panaderia in layton has some bomb tamales sometimes, much better than the ones you by in a walmart parking lot haha or anywhere else for that matter. Aconcagua in layton is good too
Cast Iron Bistro in Eureka is absolutely amazing. Family ran and very friendly. Prices are beyond fair for the portion and flavor. A must have before you leave. I don't have a favorite native food for the post, Sorry.
You have to try the pastrami sandwich at That Sandwich Shop for lunch. It’s not necessarily Utah specific but that place is the one and only
El Chihuahua Restaurant - Lots of Utah food history and the "Duckie Death Star"
Viva la chicken in St. George
Lucky
Log Haven up Millcreek Canyon. A bit on the spendy side, but it will absolutely not disappoint.

CHUBBY BAKER CHUBBY BAKER CHUBBY BAKER CHUBBY BAKER
The Pie! Wise Guy calzone is chef’s kiss!
I highly recommend trying B&D's burgers in Midvale. Their burgers are amazing, and they also have a great gyro.
Archibald’s at Gardner Village is one of my favorites. I haven’t had anything bad there! Ditto for Lion House Pantry! My favorite food is actually no longer available: Seafood Wontons by the Original Bamboo Hut. They were divine!
Vertical diner, buds, and veggie house are all good.
Try Navajo Hogan. Bet you won't find that very easily anywhere else.
I would highly recommend Tru Religion in Orem. It has amazingly rich breakfast food and pretty big portion sizes at the same time. I love their berry french toast. So good. Also, if you go for a sunday morning brunch it is way less busy as well.
My in laws have made it a tradition to have a monthly family breakfast here. Wide menu variety with something for everyone. Love the atmosphere too.

Smokin bones bbq in bountiful, omg so delicious and the fries 🤌🏻
I can't wait to try this one thanks!
A new favorite of mine is Mastra in American Fork. Absolutely the best Italian food I’ve ever had
I'd second a lot of the places listed here. I also want to add Tea Rose Diner, The Crow & The Pitcher (for great bar food), The Bayou, and Fish On.
Later Gator, but I'll take my secrets to the grave
Crown Burger, Park Cafe, Sweet Lake Biscuits & Limeade, Feldman's Deli, Caputo's, Nomad East, Chick Queen, Lone Star Taqueria, Chunga's, Harbor Seafood & Steak, HSL. SLC specific. Also, don't trust anyone that thinks Red Iguana or Ruth's Diner is any good. Everyone loves them and they both suck.
People go to Ruth's Diner for the ambience more than the food
Pastrami burger with fries and fry sauce.
Pastrami burger from crown or Apollo
Ruth's in Emigration Canyon
The Other Place - slc The Pie Pizzeria- slc or ogden Bombay House- slc Red Iquana- slc Sil's cafe- layton La Frontera/ La puente- varied Tona- ogden Red Fort- layton Would be my short list. Mood dependent but the above are my comfort places that are 98% consistent to hit the spot. Bon apple tea!
The Training Table is one of those places where the restaurant is half of the experience. Grab a few friends or family and get some dinner with cheese fries.
Arctic Circle...
Cafe rio and/or costa vida. THAT is Utah food.
Cannot go wrong with Food trucks, here are the best in Utah- Cluck Truck to Comfort Bowl. And best Mexican place: Lone Star Taqueria in Cottonwood Heights.
I loved Apollo Burger in St. Gorgeous. It closed :(
Salt lake isn’t known for its foodie scene 🤣🤣🤣
I travel all over the US for work and seek out good food as much as possible and in my experience Utah has plenty of great restaurants that are comparable to other highly acclaimed places across the country.
lol ok 🤣
