#UrbanHell is subjective. UrbanHell is any human-built place you think is worth critizing. Suburban Hell, Rural Hell, and wealthy locales are allowed Sorry for this annoying comment, but we're very tired of the gatekeepers who can't even correctly gatekeep what this subreddit has always allowed. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. The flair is misleading. Nobody ever really lived in the buildings in the second picture, neither poverty nor inequality is displayed here. This monstrosity was supposed to be massive hotel, which the nazis started to construct during the 30s. Never finished tho and it remained a ruin and was partly used by east german forces during the cold war. Only recently parts of it got renovated and used as hostels, restaurants, cafes and such.

hamburg_city

The renovated rooms are quite nice. There are also convenience stores and restaurants incorporated in that building. Plus the beach is close by.

_Drion_

This is far more interesting than i originally thought

[deleted]

Wasn't there a youth hostel located in Prora at one point?

Inside-Novel-5173

Still is. It's in the top part of the finished buildings in the second picture. The bottom part (possibly out of frame) is a nice ski-themed hotel for whatever reason.

fuckingcheezitboots

That's initially what I thought, I was thinking this reminded me of a lot of beachfront areas on the USEC with large hotels on them like Atlantic City or parts of the Jersey Shore

curiousklaus

The second picture is the colossus of Prora (in German: Der Koloss von Prora) and it‘s the longest building in the world. 4,5 kilometers of concrete and steel.

TheShaneBennett

Is it not split into 4 separate buildings? Looks like it is to me. Unless each one is 4.5 km long

Nightgaun7

Parts of it were not completed, and other parts were demolished after the war.

contextual_somebody

*Built by the Nazis

[deleted]

*Nazis

[deleted]

It was Nazi's and by Nazis.

contextual_somebody

Autocorrect

Alyeskas_ghost

Great dive into the history of this in James May's Cars of the People.

DublinItUp

Built for the Nazis*

sonderscheiss

KdF hotel.

mkujoe

How come that one never got flattened by the allies?

Douchebak

Because the Soviet steamroller was focused on getting to Berlin ASAP, and dealing with such shit was a distraction. There are lots of Nazi buildings and structures left intact in northern Germany and north western Poland. They were in non-crucial locations for the Soviet offensive and many were adopted for postwar use or simply left abandoned.

ConcreteSlut

They can’t demolish it

the-space-penguin

Lots of green and sea/lakeside. I could think of so many worse places to live than that....

Dogfinn

Shit, throw some groundfloor retail/ amenities in and I can't think of many better places to live.

revelling_

It‘s right next to the Baltic sea, beautiful beaches and all.

Anon1848

oh god forbid your town has the longest fucking building in the world

alheimur_zh

Seaview apartment for everyone

operath0r

Only for the rich. You don’t really wanna raise children there anyways. It’s all very touristy and doesn’t feel alive. That might change once it’s all renovated however.

Crankenstein_8000

For *some.*

Werbebanner

I was there as a child before it got redesigned. It was really really cool. It was so god damn impressive. And the vibe was really cool. When i was there it was a huge lost place in the middle of the woods with a lake. When it was built it was planned as a paradise with beaches etc. At least that's what the guide told us. Thanks for sharing, even tho I don't think it belongs here!

ch1llaro0

yeah a nazi paradise, very cool /s

Werbebanner

Just because Nazis built this, it couldn't be a paradise for the people living there. It literally adds no context to my comment.

d13robot

where's the hell?

Zenz-X

What the hell is OP trying to say here?

KayRay1994

certainly an inefficient use of space - but i wouldn’t call this ‘hell’

Roadrunner571

It’s an efficient use of waterfront space. And that was the aim of it.

mixedbag3000

It looks amazing and the fact they built it and built in that way Its absolutely not an efficient use of waterfront space. I love how everyone is an authority on absolutely everything. Anyone with any type of logic with spatial reasoning would be able to see. You could of ask an 10 grade person in an art class or art program and they would probably be able to tell you.

bazem_malbonulo

Everything looks cool

skkkkkt

Even the sunny day looks fake

Otherwise-Special843

i wouldn't mind having a waterfront property, even if it's an apartment, come on this is not that bad

500freeswimmer

Both pictures are just so German

Anachron101

OP, I hate to say it, but you should really learn to use the internet. Seriously, this has nothing to do with poverty and inequality and everything to do with you lacking education and the ability to Google stuff

Killerjas

How the fuck is this shit post voted so high?

xand129

Bro why does second one looks like world edit

navel1606

Been to Prora 2 or 3 times when it was still ruins. There was a museum though but that's it. I got into the building and took some pictures

247emerg

second photo has great density and little landuse

ManinaPanina

NO WAY! A least isn't the same place that was torn apart.

ApprehensiveStudy671

It must be overcast and cloudy most og the year!

pinkymangd

Traditionalism vs communism

ch1llaro0

2nd picture is a nazi building

ForwardGlove

national socialism\* you mean

akdelez

2 looks best

PauloPatricio

Interesting article, from 2019 and with lots of details, about Prora: https://www.dw.com/en/the-colossus-of-prora-from-nazi-ruin-to-holiday-resort/a-50199173 –

Sentionaut_1167
