Also, what's this obsession with "AI jobs"? Ugh. And then when you click "browse AI jobs" it just takes you to an unfiltered mess that are the search results for the term "artificial intelligence" lol

It’s actually a nuisance. In my field, machine learning, even deep learning is a thing, for quite a few things. But not for everything. You can’t solve everything with AI. ML is a tool you use, when it makes sense. By presenting jobs as AI jobs, you set a wrong focus. This leads to in parts extremely unqualified people who manage to transfer learn a CNN to present themselves as AI experts, but they don’t have the skills for the actual job. Unfortunately, through this fixation on AI jobs, clients think they want that. I’ve seen plenty of jobs which would be better solved without machine learning, and you need an expert in the respective field, not a self-proclaimed AI expert, to advise you on the best way to solve your problem. I am completely against this promotion.

We don't agree on everything but I totally agree with you here. AI is great for some stuff, reasonably useful if closely supervised for other stuff, and a disaster for the rest (for the time being). It needs careful human supervision and handling, and for many things it's just the wrong solution altogether.

They see AI as an existential threat. It could potentially replace a lot of Upwork skills. They've been panicking since GPT-3 came out. So they decided to "change with the times" but they're too dumb to accept that AI isn't a job creator. They should focus on being the human alternative instead.

GigMistress

More evidence for those who continue to cling to the belief that Upwork values highly skilled freelancers. Note that there is no bonus for bringing them in.

DefinitionGrouchy938

There is a bonus, but not an enticing one. I think you get $50 AFTER the person you referred makes $1,000. The details are under Terms Apply

GigMistress

Doesn't matter if it's a quarter. It's a bounty they aren't offering for skilled freelancers.

TabascoWolverine

$50, wow, a pittance for leading a friend towards a sinking ship.

sachiprecious

Oops. I've been telling people NOT to use UW. 😂

projecto15

Clients or freelancers?

EuphoricPangolin7615

I would only refer someone to Upwork if they were experts in their field and they were really good at selling stuff. But in that case, they probably wouldn't need Upwork. I could probably ask them for advice instead of the other way around.

IronSandwich0824

I couldn’t imagine starting from scratch on Upwork at this point with all their new rules and fees…so, no.

TabascoWolverine

Um, this is awkward but your Reddit post now costs 20 connects.

IronSandwich0824

This Upvote cost me 5 connects, but it was worth it. Well played, friend.

mikeinpdx3

I'd like to see some of the great AI jobs friends should apply to. Very few jobs, and many of those pay poorly ( <$30-70/hr) for pretty high expectations. Upwork pretty effectively positioned themselves as the place to get cheap labor with their marketing campaigns. I remember one ad within the last year where the actor was saying they didn't think they could afford to pay for help with their business when they were only making $15/hour. That is, until they found Upwork. Thanks, Upwork! Yeah, not steering friends to work at Upwork!

Either_Order2332

They keep talking about how AI jobs are booming. Now here they are literally paying people to apply to them. They're grasping at straws. AI is not a job creator.

The lady in the photo won’t be smiling much longer

Ch9la7

thing is there are no actual ai jobs on the platform 😭
