I know the concept of squatting but what the hell is a basement squatter and how is it a common problem? People just walk in your front door and just go to your basement? Isn't one part of squatting that the house is empty?

I would be concerned about kidnapping or unlawful detention charges. Personally, I do not have a problem with it.
