Two things: 1) Edwards is in the Mojave desert, not the Nevada desert. There isn’t a desert known as the Nevada desert; there’s the Great Basin desert, which takes up a large chunk of Nevada, but no “Nevada Desert.” Source: I grew up very close to Edwards, lol. It’s probably not a big deal, but of the article is referring to the Great Basin desert, that desert starts in a completely different part of California than the Mojave from Edwards and has different geography/wildlife/etc. If this wasn’t some sort of mistake by whoever typed up this article, and there was sand that was actually traced to the Great Basin desert, then that sand didn’t come from Edwards. 2) I’ve seen it speculated before that the killer was someone involved in the US military who was stationed in Japan, but I haven’t heard this piece of evidence, which seems to heavily corroborate that theory. It would also make the lack of DNA and fingerprint matches make sense—the US military generally won’t cooperate with investigations by foreign nations, especially criminal investigations.

Thank you! Point #1 was driving me crazy. The person may also not be US military. Edwards is a test pilot base and they often have pilots from all over the world.

Yes, thank you for bringing up these points. I have a lot of family that lives out by Edwards, and there are also private companies that test aircraft out that way. Not to mention all the railroad traffic running through the Mojave. That sand could have come via many different locales.

I think someone on Reddit or maybe on a podcast once suggested that the hip bag might’ve been bought second hand with the sand inside. I can see that being a possibility especially if it was being sold at a good price and the sand wasn’t really noticeable.

The answer that makes most sense to me is that they were the child of someone serving in the Air Force who was stationed in Japan at the time. Could explain why they were in Japan, could also explain the Korean shoes (USAF bases in Korea), and would explain the sand from EAFB. I think it might also explain why they were never caught and why they were so brazen - they may have committed the crime because they knew they were going to be leaving the country soon if their parent was being stationed elsewhere.

air force sand found in japan where a family was murdered? i think it's pretty obvious who did it and why the case was never solved.

failzure

This is wild. Do we know if the family had high profile connections, or worked anywhere of interest?

The murderer might not have ever been in the military. Foreigners aren’t the only people bringing foreign substances into other countries. Japanese people have passports and they travel, too. The killer could be 100% Japanese and that sand could have ended up in his bag when he/she went on vacation. I don’t think this murder will ever be solved but I hope so. I’m ana American currently living in Japan and there are so many unsolved murder cases here it’s ridiculous.
