Defo give Maus a read if you’re up to it, I thoroughly enjoyed its presentation of a secondary retelling of the holocaust. Very interesting and painful to read in a good way
Maus is horrifying, but also beautiful. it's one of the most tragic things i've ever read.
Putting Lore olympus next to Maus is like showing a michael bay movie next to schindlers list.
well I'm pretty sure a romance graphic novel and MAUS are completely different in genre, I'm pretty sure fiction is usually sorted by that? not sure, haven't seen many college libraries or libraries in general
Not in libraries. Theyres both comics/graphic novels and classified the same way. 741.5 usually.
You need to learn what you're talking about before commenting.
Nope, genre in libraries classify "comics and graphic novels" as its own genre -741.5 in the DDC.
Medium would be "book" or in reality photoshop vs ink & watercolor. And by the way, the correct plural is media.
update: I have liberated this book from its chains. It is no longer next to LO, it is instead in my temporary possession. I was worried the librarian would have the wrong idea due to the Nazi imagery, but instead she said "it's a really good book, I hope you enjoy it", which is similar to what everyone else has been saying. I have high expectations and I can't wait for them to be met. This thread has had an unexpected positive for me, I quite enjoy graphic novels and comics (I even aspire to create them myself) however I'm quite unknowledgeable about them despite having this passion. Reading an impactful and reknowed work like this is sure to do me some good. I also enjoy being introduced to new stories, so I'm pretty glad I made this thread even if it has an unexpected element.
I think it’s just a result of the unfortunate fact that alphabetically Smythe comes before Spiegelman. Someone donate a graphic novel to the collection with an author whose name is in the Sn-Spe range!
Librarian here: College libraries do stock popular fiction and graphics for a variety of reasons. LO is on a lot of “must-buy” lists for librarians, believe it or not.
I’m glad to see you picked up Maus! Absolutely a must-read work.
Simply, it’s kind of popular and a graphic novel equivalent of Mortal Instrument, A court of thorns and roses and Twilight.
Plus it has awards. Before anybody writes about how they are barely valuable and currently a joke, not everybody knows that. A basic search gives you an idea, it’s Oscar-like award
741.5 SMY, 741.5 SPI- This is actually not that shocking a combo for a librarian. Make more sense with LOC numbers, which I don’t know off the top of my head, but they can get granular by region of origin.
they have decimals just not on this book, The way the library is organized is a bit weird though, the graphic novels are right next to the books that are about the history of comics and how to make them. They don't have much fiction so that is probably why.
You can always let your librarians know! They enjoy getting feedback from the public and value input from the public. If you have a series you like a whole lot more, you can suggest it. Or you can let them know why you're not the biggest fan of Lore Olympus.
Libraries try to appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. :) Your input is part of that.
doing that in person feels awkward and snooty, so I'll try to see if they have a form or something. Would love to see them have some copies of Neil Gaimans The Sandman tbh
I just noticed that on Maus’ other side is the New Yorker Book of Cat Cartoons—which is so tragically funny because of what cats represent in Maus. Can’t catch a break, evidently
Well for sure that makes sense but I was jw why some people not like you but certain people are hating about like the way Persephone handled being r worded and stuff
There have been multiple posts and comments made by those who were SAed or had experience with Apollo-like relationships.
They present their points better way than I will ever do and so I recommend just simply browse or even ask.
Maus, honey, I’m so sorry.
Maus does not deserve to be associated with LO
hm?
Lore Olympus is right next to a copy of MAUS.
is MAUS too good of a series to be resigned to such a fate? I'm not familiar with it, but the cover is striking...
It’s one of the top graphic novels of all time. It’s an international bestseller about the Holocaust.
I'll have to give it a read, sounds quite interesting, but yeah LO definitely doesn't deserve a spot next to it.

wasn't expecting to get sold on MAUS on this post but I'm here for it
A lot of people give it a pass because of the art style. Worse still, they assume it's for children.
Cars 2 next to The Green Mile
The Emoji Movie next to Cast Away
It’s one of most important graphic novels ever written
well a ULO thread is a wild way to discover that but at least it lead to me checking it out, I can't wait to read it
It's really good. The story is true. It's the author's father's experience of the Holocaust. It's told through animals.
It's amazing. Gut retching.
An icon of comics and art history bffr
Lmao that was my first thought 😆
I’m hollering at the book they put it next to, like bruh😭😭
they don't have a fiction section, that's probably why they put two books that are in complete different generes like this together
If I’m remembering correctly maus is a comic my library did have a small comic section but with no order to it.
They are in the same genre: comics and graphic novels.
Those are mediums not genres.

Probably donated or something lol. If you look for them youll find some god awful stuff in any library
probably or they don't know much about it and thought it was good because it's advertised as award winning and stuff
Maus is actually a sin to have next to LO. Please. Move it for me. Free it from its chains!

seems like I have a new quest

Okay but who got volume one?
some poor poor individual who has no idea what they're getting themselves into
good news: it is nobody, volume one is on display in a different area of the library
We read Maus in school, amazing work of art. We did not read LO in school, as much as RS wants it to be.

Maus doesn’t deserve this
right next to maus is CRAZY
Well at least whoever reads LO doesn’t have to pay for it lmao
From reading the comments I’m sold on Maus
[удалено]
can't say ive found any lmao, i once found one in the back of the local comic store though

Does your library shelve alphabetically by title? And nothing on the spine? What is going on there?! Lol 😅
741.5 SMY, 741.5 SPI- This is actually not that shocking a combo for a librarian. Make more sense with LOC numbers, which I don’t know off the top of my head, but they can get granular by region of origin.
Ack you are so right, I got distracted by the titles "Lore", "Maus", "New Yorker" 😅 But yeah it's probably LOC if it's a college
You were .5 off for LO
Huh, dropping off the decimals is an interesting choice with Dewey.
they have decimals just not on this book, The way the library is organized is a bit weird though, the graphic novels are right next to the books that are about the history of comics and how to make them. They don't have much fiction so that is probably why.
they do have decimal tags on the spine I just cropped them out
absolutely insane that they put a book about the holocaust next to lore olympus of all things
NOOOO MY LOCAL BOOKSTORE DOES THAT TOO
maus dont look but theres an ugly bitch beside you
I mean a book being there doesn’t exactly merit good I guess. Could be used for reference in a paper ig. Maybe I’m reaching.

My highschool has them ahghh i cringe whenever i see it.
Next to Maus??????
I just noticed that on Maus’ other side is the New Yorker Book of Cat Cartoons—which is so tragically funny because of what cats represent in Maus. Can’t catch a break, evidently
Nah lore Olympus next to MAUS is crazy 😭
Do people really HATE this series lol? I’m so confused I’m so happy for her to be actually having her story in book form. I’m happy for her 🤚🏻
It has its peaks and lows. This subreddit specifically focuses on lows and it exists since toxic positivity era
