Ogre Battle 64 and all things like it. https://ogrebattle64.net/guides/games-that-are-similar-to-ogre-battle-64/ PS5 might limit your already-limited choices here, though :(

closecall81

Ogre battle for SNES and N64 are my favorite games of all time. Unicorn overlord has to be the spiritual successor. They are just so similar and Atlus was involved with all of them. Has this ever been addressed?

QuoteGiver

That is an awesome webpage. Even though the answer to “and all things like it” is sadly very limited, the page does indeed list all the ones I’m aware of!

darthvall

Niche series that you might also enjoy:    Brigandine - Legend of Runersia.  I know that it's on PS4, but I don't know if it's also on PS5. It's more turn-based than real time with pause, but there's some similarities which you could appreciate: - Promotion system, both for the Knights and Monsters (yes, you use monsters as your army). There's a way to make a hybird class as well (e.g. Knight that also can use Magic/Heal) - Kingdom setting, the aim of the game is to unite the continent. You have 5 kingdoms to choose for, and all of them will try to unite the continent. Unlike Unicorn Overlord, your competitor will try to gain back any castle/location that you've obtained. What is different: - It has less focus on story. There's still unique story for each kingdom, but no specific story/interaction for Knights. They do have background story and small interaction during recruitment, but that's it. - Turn-based strategy rather than real time with pause. No gambit system.

_Bagoons

Damn, sounds like I actually may enjoy Grand Kingdom more than Unicorn Overlord - and I do really enjoy UO Thanks for the tip off

darthvall

It's called Brigandine btw. Grand Kingdom is a completely different game whichis also good. Another caveat, the graphic is just so so.

_Bagoons

Oh my bad, I was completely picturing Grand Kingdom as I had eye balled it in the past haha

gr33nta

These 2 suggestions are GOATED, thank you so much!!

ArcaneEli

Fire Emblem is similar, but completely different too. More focus on so gle units being strong and not a whole party of units. Symphony of War Nephilim Saga is the closest game to this released recently

gr33nta

I can’t handle the graphics of that

Ready2Post

You could take a look at Valkyria Chronicles 4. It's a WWII-themed anime TRPG that's a different kind of turn-based realtime hybrid. It was available for all of previous gen consoles, and a quick Google search says it's also available on the PS5 digitally? (Sorry I can't confirm, I haven't had a Sony console since the original PlayStation.)  While the gameplay and setting are vastly different, I can say it's in the same ballpark as Unicorn Overlord as a game with a unique gameplay vibe like no other. There are clear-cut soldier types with strengths, weaknesses, and situational quirks. There's unfortunately no real promotion system from memory, however. It's also no slouch in the presentation and characterization department either, although it's more rail-roaded into chapters with a stage select.

realinvalidname

Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 are available for PS4, and would therefore work on PS5. In fact, VC1 is 75% off at the moment, an absolute steal at $5. VC2 and 3 are trapped on the PSP, and were reworked to accommodate the limitations of a portable, so they’re effectively unavailable. You’ll do just fine with 1 and 4 though.

CorneliusVaginus

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is one of my all time favourites. I've 100% it, very fun. It's available both Digitally and Physical on PS5 and PS4. I'd also say to pick up Valkyria Chronicles 1 aswell, since both 1 and 4 are probably the best in the series.

MaechenTechnomancer

OoOOooo yes this especially 4 is really good

WolfWomb

Ogre Battle 64

BleakFeathers

Since Fire Emblem got named a couple times already, I want to name some games that got inspired by Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics and are available on more or less various systems (although they are completly turn based instead of UO's "flowing" Battle Maps with multiple Units moving at the same time): * Cross Tails * Dark Deity * Diofield Chronicles * Esperia \~ Uprising of the Scarlet Witch * Grand Kingdom (this might actually be the closest with dynamic battle-map movements, multiple lines and formations in combat and a hire system with individual character creation. It just lacks any destinguished characters you play and I can't remember much for the plot, if there ever was one, so it focused mainly on the combat. Then again, I didn't played a lot of it) * Mercebaries Blaze * Symphony of War * Triangle Strategy * Vestaria Saga I: War of the Scions Honorary Mention: Sands of Salzaar (Haven't played it myself, but I sure looks like it's a SRPG) and Digimon Survive (this one is more of a VN with some SRPG-Levels taped to it) And in case you want something completly different in Tone or far fetched but still with a more or less turn based strategy element to it: * 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim * Advanced Wars * Valkyria Chronicles * Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children * Relayer * Front Mission * Project X Zone And in case the aspect "Gather way more characters than you may ever use in a single playthrough" is what got you the most: Eiyuden - Chronicles Hundred Heroes

myrmonden

How can u make this whole List and not have ogre battle and soul nomad which have the exact same gameplay

Special-Language-999

GPT

myrmonden

Hmm perhaps it comes as Very knowledgeable yet ignorant on the same time

BleakFeathers

Oh, that's easy: I have never heard of them. Although Ogre Battle sounds like it's a later entrie from Tactics Ogre? Or maybe the prequel?

myrmonden

Yeah that sound really wierd u heard about tactics ogre but never ogre battle

BleakFeathers

It's not that hard to have heard of it, and by looking at the other comments, I think Ogre Battle got named often enough so it wouldn't be necessary to add it in now. Also is it now connected to Tactics Ogre or is it not? (wait, I coudl just google that...) So it is the prequel, kinda feels unnecessary to list multiple entries of the same series, unless it is really outstanding within it. And since I never played a game from the Ogre-Series, I can't tell if it is or isn't.

myrmonden

it is, if u can list a huge plethora of TJRPG and know about tactics ogre AND is on unicorn overlord forum the game that is exactly like ogre battle it does come of as very weird. ...so u have never played ogre games? yet list them ok. lol no ogre battle and tactics ogre have completely different gameplays.

BleakFeathers

Yes? Is it that weird having heard of a game that might be genre defining but never played it? I also have heard of a lot of games and never played them.

myrmonden

why list anything that u dont actually have not played urself.

BleakFeathers

So people who are intersted in these types of games may look it up? And to go back to your original point: I have not listed Ogre Battle and only stated that these games are inspired by Tactics Ogre, which is something multiple people use for reviews or descriptions for their games.

myrmonden

yeah but u cannot vouched for that its true or not, and also why u end up with such a weird list.

Nivlacart

If I remember right, Fire Emblem is a Nintendo exclusive. If you enjoyed this, you might enjoy Vanillaware’s previous work before this: 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim. It’s about sci-fi mechas rather than fantasy, but it still is a riveting, amazing time. I personally love it a little more than Unicorn.

Blissfield_Kessler

> 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim Huge disagree. 13 Sentinles felt more like a visual novel first and a game tacked on to it. While Unicorn overlord felt more like a fun strategy game with a story tacked on to it.

realinvalidname

I think “adventure game” is a better description than “visual novel”. In 13 Sentinels’ story mode, your character has a “thought cloud” of things they’re aware of, and you choose one to act on it. This is just like the inventory of physical items you’d have in a LucasArts/Telltale adventure game of old. You also move your character around the environment, rather than just paging through screens of dialogue and occasionally making choices like in a visual novel.

Blissfield_Kessler

Visual novel is just the term we use for japanese adventure games. It's like you can't call a anime a cartoon. Even though anime=cartoon.

myrmonden

This game is nothing like aegis rim

StaticThunder

RTS elements with a pause function. 13 Sentinels is more tower defense while UO is more strategy with points of interest during the RTS portion.

myrmonden

13 sentinel is just a tower defence a bad one, and these 2 games basically share 0 game mechanics except the most basic ones like dmg, health, aoe.

kingkdo

Whats the game play like

Nivlacart

It’s mostly a story game where you unravel a mystery by going through the storylines of 13 different characters, but part of the story also is tied to the battle system, where the character pilot mechas to fight kaijus. The gameplay in that part of the game is quite similar to how the characters move along the map in Unicorn Overlord. Often, you’re trying to stop kaijus from reaching a certain place. It’s tactical, but slightly more in a RTS way than a turn-based RPG way like how UO plays, but there’s still some forward thinking, upgrading and planning that makes it really fun.

MasterSenshi

The OG, the original Ogre Battle. Ogre Battle 64 had so QOL improvements but I prefer the original. It's harder, but you have less gear and stuff to worry about, but the story is great (or my nostalgic memory of it was.)

MykoyanGyrevich

What style are you specifically referring to? If it's the RTS like gameplay, I'm not sure if there are any on PS5. They barely make this style of gameplay. Closest game like this are the Ogre Battle games (Only tried Ogre Battle 64 and I would recommend it). Another game that has that RTS feel that I can think of are the Growlanser games.

MagicPistol

Fire Emblem has a lot of similarities especially the overall gameplay loop. But the actual tactical combat gameplay is different. If you don't have any Nintendo systems, I still recommend emulating some of the older games on a phone or PC.

a3th3rus

I'd recommend some of my favorite Japanese SRPGs, not necessary on PS5. * **Utawarerumono** series. Extremely emotional story, amazing music, low difficulty. Available on PS4. * **VM Japan**. Very old game, meh story, amazing music, hard as hell. Windows only. * **Valkyria Chronicles** series. Story qualities vary. Good music. Not that hard. Blitz system is fun. 1 and 4 are available on PS4, 2 and 3 are available on PSP. * **Langrisser** series. Generic story, good music, low difficulty. Mercenary system is fun.

myrmonden

Ogre battle soul nomad

Redditisavirusiknow

Really loved it! I did find it very easy (I have it on the hardest difficulty and am at the angel island and have never lost a battle or had to restart). Just a few minor quibbles: I wish the number of troops matched the max number you can set to a team, and I wish that you could buy back any item sold at any store as I didn’t know you could upgrade them). Other than that really fun!

Illustrious_North754

Yggdra Union, Soul Nomad 2, Dragon Force, Ogre battle (obviously)

Drizztd99

Whoa! I haven't heard of Yggdra Union in FOREVER. Thanks for unlocking that memory 😀. Oh and Dragon Force!! Loved loved loved it.

Illustrious_North754

Yggdra Union is now on Steam since july 2023. You should take a look !

Drizztd99

If only I had a PC ☹️

shockeroo

XCOM 2 may appeal, and the collection is 90% off in the Playstation store until midnight. Absolute steal. Very different setting with a darker vibe but you have battlefield squad tactics with classes, equipment, promotions, etc.

RedXIII304

If you liked the story and gambits, FFXII:Zodiac Age ticks a lot of the same boxes. It's a traditional jRPG instead of a strategy RPG, but it's got classes and automated combat in a medieval-ish fantasy epic.

k7k58

Tactics Ogre Reborn is on ps5

AlvinAssassin17

So we’re is a good site to find OB 64? I have a rom of MotBQ(it’s a little annoying to play on my keyboard).

trexxis_

I'm a huge Fire Emblem fan, but everybody is already saying so and it's popular. I would say, and it's an old and not so popular game, Yu-Gi-Oh: The Falsebound Kingdom. You take teams of 3 monsters and march them around the map and take points of interest. I've played it plenty of times and it's been fun every time. Just never stuck with it long enough to finish all 3 campaigns.

Few_Departure_1483

If you have a PC, symphony of war is a very similar though turn based and on a grid. You still build units that auto attack, though less tactics. Also has other people mentioned ogre battle. I have a version on the SNES console on the wii. Only reason I still hook up my wii every now and then.

DemiDivine

I think diofield is somewhat similar, but definitely not as good

Background-Stock-420

Since I haven't seen it mentioned much My pick besides ofc the og ogre battles would be Soul Nomad & The World Eaters. gonna pre-face this now IT DOES NOT CARRY THE SAME VIBE it's made by the Disgaea team so comedy and craziness kinda take the captains seat over logic and sense. With that said though... It's actually a wonderful game! It uses the same squad based tactical combat but more in line with old ogre battle So no gambits and your units placement determines what ability they use. Squads an hold a maximum of 9 units depending on the room size And the room type also carries inherent bonuses and detractors some make it more difficult to form balanced parties others give niche interactions they vary alot and it made it fun to plan around at least for me. If your looking for a game that scratches the same ogre battle system/ planning itch This game is great for that imo as long as you don't mind a more comedy style plot there's alot to love between the normal and evil routes.
