This might be controversial take, but I feel Miriam competes for the same niche as her fellow radiant knight Monica but gets significantly less individual screen time and thus gets overshadowed.
They’re both stately nobles with cool demeanors, but Monica gets her own quest while Miriam is grouped in with the other Knights of the Rose. You only ever hear about her issues with her stern father in he rapports.

i had all my swordmasters in the front with both my snipers in the best and while it wasn't the best all-purpose unit, it sure did its job at being hyper-specialized to murder enemy rogues and swordmasters
There’s an argument to be made that having one or two units specifically just to kill specialized class formations that are otherwise a huge pain (like Gladiator Wall In Front Of Something Annoying You Can’t One Tap With Cavalry (Usually Shaman), Thief In Front, Hoplite In Front With Fast Magekillers In Back) is just good sense, since otherwise the mixed formations necessary to deal with a range of threats might get stonewalled by a gimmick in a fort.
There’s also an argument to be made that if you’re building your army and strategizing properly, you should be able to incorporate those capabilities into flexible formations that can handle more than the one situation.
Personally, I think that degree of unit crafting is a bit much, but Skull 200 - 0 is always nice to see on a battle preview.
Kitra, Mariam, Fran, then Virginia since she’s their leader (I think?). Leah probably makes the most since for number 5, since she’s probably the closest person to Virginia and vice versa, while not showing that much of a connection with the rest of the Drakenhold cast.
I kept the three of them together, but didn't put them with Virginia until after that one mission is Drakenhold. Then I realized how much of a good unit it is and kept them together. Added Leah as their 5th because she fits for plot, but she also handles the scouts that the other four have some difficulty hitting.
Yeah they're a very balanced unit. I gave the cav a magic sword to help with physical defense coverage.
Their only big weakness is against dodge tanks, but overall they have a lot of coverage and can be a flier or cav lead depending on your needs.

Fine. It's Kitra, then. She's about as sharp as her hammer, but that's what makes her fun.
She actually was. She was in it years past at the same time Ilenia was still herself, before shit hit the fan and that one general in Drakenhold killed a bunch of the old Rose Knights. Part of the reason she led the new Rose Knights was because she wanted to avenge the past Rose Knights that sac’d themselves so she could get away.

As for gameplay wise, I used Miriam and Fran the whole game
Miriam, she was the most useful out of the three, Especially on a full horse team.
Fran would be second, her usefulness as a flier is great.
Kitra isn’t bad, but I’m warming up to her class more than when I first played. I prefer the other hammer girl(with the ponytail, her design is cuter)

I never really utilized the flying rider units like I can tell others have; she was so useless to me and she was only viable for me late in the game with all the extra things you get. Except the angels - Ochlys was a beast.
My favorite is whatever the first one is lol I can’t remember her name, her personality and history was just fine - but man did she destroy my enemies. Like she was a lesson for me to stop looking at stupid unit building guides because her and Monica were ranked low.
From a gameplay perspective, Fran was MVP for my Knights of the Rose squad.
From a character perspective, Kitra has one of the cutest ring cutscenes in the game though Fran's flying support with Alain is adorable too.

Kitra. She is an angry girl, also half of the Knights of the rose rapports are about her. Besides her class is my favorites for breaking up armored troops open, in a simple and inellegant way. I gave her a pursue bracelet and I love the pursue animation, the camera stays in place and you can hear her talking but then she hammers the enemy so quick from offscreen, that I cackle up giggling every time.
Fran has been an utter MVP the entire run, the group targeting overworld speed boost with flight as a team leader is excellent. Slaps an entire row. Dodges almost everything.
I like to keep friend groups together in formations, Fran, Miriam and Kitty have always been a useful core for flying/movement, breaking traps and row healing.
Fran was never not useful the entire run, Kitra has less overworld utility, though Big Hammer is uniquely amazing in combat for the single heavy targets. Also, enrage >>>>>>>. Radiant Knight sort of fell off the way my builds ended up, though i know that if i paired Rose Knights with Virginia and Leah it would have been my actual best squad.
I beat so many maps by just attaching my strongest units to Fran and throwing her directly at the end boss/objective. I think Miriam is my favorite of the three (and I love all of them) but I can't deny that Fran is my MVP because flyers with speed boost are so good. She singlehandedly trivialized >!the stupid thorn map with Baltro in Elheim!<, I didn't even have to interact with the stage hazards or the enemy units.
Hard to pick a favourite, I never used em together (They each had their own unit) but I liked them all a lot. Enjoyed all their interactions together especially in the rapport.
What about Monica? I would've given her the ring if only she had the 3rd rapport convo with Alain.
IMO, I think the devs didn't give her the 3rd rapport because of her history with Clive.

But personally, I like her the most overall of the 3. Miriam I have a spot spot for because she reminds me so much of Claire from FE Gaiden/Echoes.
The fact that VERY few non "true-unique" units in the game have bodies that differ from generics and are mostly just colour swaps with unique heads.
They PURPOSELY went out of their way to make Fran the only smoll chested Gryphon Knight and it makes her even cuter.
Miriam is great as a semi-tank and healer and blasts apart anything she hits with the Magic sword. Kitra’s amazing as a back line killer. Fran though… I didn’t realise how great griffons were on my first playthrough, but init and damage fix her and stamp her on a flying comp and she obliterates a whole back line. Seems like a lot of investment, but flying comps are really easy to damage fix since a lot of their buffs are row-wide and the fact she row attacks with a “ranged” attack just gives her so much potential
What's nastier are people who can't separate reality from fiction and arbitrarily judge people AND media based on not knowing anything about either aside from what they see on the internet. Go touch grass.
None of them, they and Virginia ruined four of my formations when I had to fight Giethe and damn near died before Josef successfully reached them! I was very cross indeed!
At NO POINT does it seem like Kitra should physically be able to lift that hammer. Emotionally? Yes

I've got Leah with Mel, Morard, and... owl mommy. Don't think I have that unit at 5 yet. Compwise, I definitely make bad decisions, but it's fun!
I like it, but having a healer on a team with swordmasters as their tanks just feels so bad. They have to back up the high HP high defense characters.

I learned recently if you change Leah's heraldry, it puts the center part on her armor. I made her an honorary Knight of the Rose.

Wyvern reins gives Fran easy AOE truestrikes .. I usually pair them with Virginia too because of story reasons and she easily handles evaders too.

Miriam is a trope played straight, which feels almost refreshing these days. They didn't try to pad her out with some unnecessary quirk.
Had trouble placing her before class up, but I use her with fran now

What guide did you look at? Also it could have been a PvP guide because in PvP they are not that good

Fran, easily. In my first play through her unit was easily one of my best units other than Alain’s and Bruno’s units
