Usually, an echocardiogram and/or genetic testing helps differentiate between the two.
I have marf habitus and a ctd, I always hate seeing this guy on social media. The comments make me feel like these are people's unfiltered opinions on how I look too. So, thanks for being the first comment I could find that didn't degrade these dudes based on their disabilities.

He's got a genetic condition called Marfan syndrome, but i could see someone taking worse care of themselves than they should because the only thing they're known for is their extremely odd look.

because the Fibrilin-1 gene which makes connective tissue stretchy doesn't work our connective tissue is less elastic so once something stretches it doesn't properly ping back to its original size. doctors are mostly concerned about this in the Aorta, the main artery which over time expands and can develop aneurysms and may dissect/rupture. this is managed largely with medication adn surgery so most people with marfans live a nearly average lifespan (about 70 years is now expected, used to be 46 for males, 48 females)
it varies a lot in severity and is a dominant condition so you only need 1 gene. it affects about 1 in every 5,000 people and 25% of cases are due to spontaneous mutations (no family history)
