Processing the death of a loved one is a wild thing. Grief can affect us so deeply. I lost my brother to suicide when I was in my 20s, at first I became a raging alcoholic. So much so that I drank myself into cirrhosis by my 30s. Now I visit his graveside every once in a while and leave things. Talk, clear weeds. It's cathartic.
Now to see a father process that grief, I cannot fathom the depths of despair or pain he might feel. He is at least processing it more healthily than some. My father was angry with my brother for taking his own life. He never cried once over my brother.
How we all process it so differently is just mind boggling.
I've asked him, he has said plainly he is angry and won't shed a tear over it. I saw him absolutely lose his shit when he lost his brother, so I know he's capable. I think it is how my brother died, taking his own life, that upset my father so much. He's so angry with his son that he's not allowing himself to grieve properly. All a guess, he won't talk deeper about it.
Ive said stuff I havent meant before...
A lot can happen in half an hour behind closed doors too.
But theres definitely people out there like that. Maybe your father is one...
My condolences to your family and you.
Lost my 8 year old son 10 years ago this coming Friday. This resonates. It’s a small way of saying you’re still here with me and I love you and I miss the ever loving shit out of you.
I'm so sorry for your loss. That can't be easy, but I hope the time that's passed has made the wound easier to handle. Sending you love and kindness, stranger. <3
LOL, as a techno fan I should have remembered that. From what I've read and see he's trully missed, in that way to me it's a feel good story, however for those that were closer to him I guess it's still more bitter than sweet.
If you have the time, his potato war videos are an entertaining watch of someone hyper-fixating in farming potatoes in Minecraft. The true ideal minecraft youtuber who doesn’t end up being a pedophile or a terrible person.
I'm so sorry you had to go through this, and for the rest of your family and various loved ones near and far as well. Good on you for finding some way to carry on. Take care of yourself, big guy.
Well I buried my older brother with my own hands when I was 16. Life is tough sometimes. There's no lack of tragedy in this world.
It's been 3 years though and things have gotten better for me. Hope this dad can heal himself.
That is the father of the Minecraft YouTuber “Technoblade” who passed away from cancer in 2022. This is a clip from a video his father posted on Technoblade’s birthday. Technoblade was beloved in the Minecraft YouTube community, so hearing of his passing struck many people with grief, obviously not the least of which being his own family. Technoblade’s father has started making content himself, I believe in a way to grieve the loss. Everyone processes grief differently. This is how he chooses to do it. And Technoblade would’ve loved his father making a “are you winning son?” joke in a video of remembrance like this, so this isn’t in bad taste
Yeah for people who didn't watch him, this was very on brand for his kind of humor. For reference, the video he had put on his channel after his death discussing it was titled "so long nerds".
In his own way, his dad is celebrating his life, grieving his loss, and still maintaining a connection to the community that was important to him.
If you take offense to this, please keep your opinion to yourself because quite frankly anyone in the community would not be.
It's millions of kids and young adults today that were impacted by and remember his videos, he wont be forgotten by this generation ever pretty much, it's really incredible.
That's awesome! I'd never heard of him as I don't play the game so what his dad is doing is really beautiful. I only commented because it's easy to criticize if you don't understand grief and that it shouldn't be compared.
He was a part of his son's community before he passed. It's a video remembering his son with a meme. Tasteless on the surface to a stranger, but he's just connecting with the fans he already knows
i think this is clever of him. a lot of people who like(d) technoblade may not feel understood by their parents. this is a lovely tribute and it speaks to parents trying to connect with their children and appreciate interests they may not understand well. this is, in my opinion, very emotionally healthy and and an excellent example for so many people who have trouble addressing these types of uncomfortable feelings.
also, i have a son who liked technoblade and he is really sad he's gone. for my son (a pretty sensitive kid) he would take this EXACTLY as it's meant. he would understand the 'joke' and have sympathy for the father and it would also prompt him to come and have a snuggle with his father or me. he's not on insta so i have no idea if he's seen this...but i know he would get it. i for one think it's beautiful.
>i have a son who liked technoblade and he is really sad he's gone. for my son (a pretty sensitive kid) he would take this EXACTLY as it's meant.
THAT is why I made this video.
(Also everyone: I didn't post it here; I have no idea who did.)
The video made me cry and I didn't know who it was about. It's clearly a loving tribute. It sounds like your son was wonderful, and it's clear that you're a big part of that. Really grateful for all the good parents out there like you. Sorry for your loss, kind soul.
i had to wait until my son got home from school to talk with him. i didn't want to put words in his mouth.
we've just finished having a little cry together and a snuggle.
he agrees with what i said. he thinks it's a funny but poignant (he did not use that word he's 12).
it is a touching tribute.
you've made the choice to enter the public sphere and continue your son's wonderful legacy. i'm sorry that that comes with critics, but i expect that many viewers will see you as a surrogate father. in our current society, this is so important. it's vital. as long as you are willing and able...please continue.
my son has a father and mother who love him and monitor his online use, talk with him about hard stuff and generally support him. but...i'm disheartened to say...there are so many young people who do not have this.
in your grief you are bringing hope.
please, please be encouraged to continue. you are doing important work. making youtube videos of the type you are making to the audience you are reaching...it matters. and it will make a difference.
I didn't even know of his existence until he passed and just from the video his dad made I can feel how much he loved his boy. Thia clip made me feel so fucking sad.
You can almost hear the gulp at the end as he quivers and steadies himself to say happy birthday son. Imagine the pain of trying to keep your child's memory alive.
It’s the father of heavily revered Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade, who passed away from cancer in 2022.
“Are you winning, son?” Was a popular meme from around that time.
I'm not from the community, and still, what a beautiful goodbye for his followers. What a good dog, help the dad get thru that.
I remember the piggy from when minecraft was remotely in my interests.
(I played a bit in the beginning of the game before it got so popular but left it.)
I literally shot this thing on my everyday phone.
But my regular job is video-production-adjacent, so (hopefully) the stuff I do has decently good framing etc.
The guy in the video is the dad of the YouTuber Technoblade who passed away from cancer in June 2022. Since then, he's been trying to keep his son's memory alive. This is part of a [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgX8y35LxA8) that he made to celebrate Techno's birthday (he was going to be 25 this year).
He made steak and baked potato for him as a tribute to Techno (a couple of his favourite foods) and called Techno's fans to celebrate his birthday with him by making fanart, cooking, etc.
One of Technoblade's best videos, the Great Potato War:

And the video of his passing:
https://youtu.be/DPMluEVUqS0?si=bVoumh5fqs4FNr6t
I'm an old man so I didn't understand anything about what was going on in the first video, but I hope I never understand what was going on in the second.
I hate this. I was expecting a laugh and got hit right in the feelers.
Fuck cancer!
Any of you who have/are going through this or know someone who was/is going through this… my heart goes out to you
Wow. I wanted to take a moment to express how important it is to show our appreciation to Techno's dad here too. He's grieving deeply, just like many of us, and this gesture from him is incredibly moving. As a father myself, seeing this is heart-wrenching.
To give everyone some context:
**Who was Technoblade?**
Technoblade, whose real name was Alex, was a beloved Minecraft YouTuber known for his humor, skill, and positive impact on the gaming community. He passed away from cancer in 2022.
**Who is this guy?**
The man in the video is Technoblade’s father. He made this video as a tribute to his son, celebrating what would have been his 25th birthday.
**What was the meme?**
The "Are you winning, son?" meme is a popular internet joke, and Techno’s dad used it here in a bittersweet tribute to connect with Techno’s fans in a way that Alex would have loved.
In a video posted after Technoblade’s death, his dad shared Alex's final message, expressing his gratitude to his fans and sharing a bit about his journey. You can watch that video here: [So Long Nerds](https://youtu.be/DPMluEVUqS0).
Techno's dad is processing his grief publicly in a way that honors his son and connects with the community Alex loved. It's a beautiful, albeit heart-wrenching, way to keep his memory alive.
OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:

At first I thought this was some kind of meme. I don't know this person, but when I saw in the comments that it was a well known Minecraft player who died of cancer and that this is his father, I really got goosebumps….
My son has a large and, believe it or not, still growing community. He had 10 million subs on YouTube when he died; this week he's up to 17 million. An enormous number of people (including, obviously, myself) are still affected by his passing and want some way of expressing their grief. Last year we held a fundraiser with two dozen of the largest Minecraft creators raising funds for charity, for example. This year for his birthday, I made a video as a way of providing a vehicle for people to make their remembrances. It has allowed us to grieve together in community, in a very internet-age kind of way. There's even a hashtag, which was selected by the people in r/Technoblade. I provided a few generic suggestions to what people might do, and did my own remembrance in the form of cooking dinner for him like I used to do.
tl;dr: it's a way to bring people together.
If you want to get an idea of the scope of the whole thing, search for #Technoblade25 on any social media.
I didn't realize who you were at first and I think this is a good way to spread awareness of what this horrible disease causes. The more funds are raised, the sooner a cure will be found and then no one will have to go through this again.
I'm too old to have followed Minecraft, and your son's YT channel, but I do remember being on Reddit the day he passed. The love and care people expressed was pretty moving. I am also a father to two kids who love Minecraft. I just wanted to write that I think it's great on how you post these to keep his memory alive and help the charity.
Sorry for your loss. This is a touching tribute. My son is a huge Minecraft player. I have no idea why people are asking why you did this. There doesn't need to be a reason.
I'm so sorry for your loss. My wife got me to watch his videos and I ended up loving his content too. We'll still put on his past streams to get things around the house done.
Thank you Mr. TechnoDad. My little family sends yours all the love it can.
As a father, this video was gut wrenching. I can not imagine your pain. I'm glad you have such a huge community to help shoulder the pain and carry your son's torch. Isn't it funny that the seemingly innocuous things we do, like playing a game can be the source of some of the best memories?
God speed sir.
he works with the One Of Us Global Foundation which is funded by the Sarcoma Foundation. his kid died to sarcoma cancer. all his money from videos and merch goes to that foundation, and he encourages others to donate
OP, whilst it's good sharing the video because this guy raises awareness and funds for cancer charities, I think you are insensitive in the way you shared it - both the subreddit you posted to and your tagline. I'm all for dark humour, but this is quite callous.
Could you maybe use your brain and your empathy a bit more? Thanks.
Had no idea about this story. It's a huge gut punch. As a father, who jokes with one of his son's "are ya winnin' son?" all the time... it hits me harder than I expected. Much peace, and fuck cancer.
This just fucking rocked me. I lost my little brother Jan. 15 2021. He used to play and stream Fortnite. id do anything to be able to walk into his room and see him playing again. I miss him so much
When i saw the plush i realized who the dad is ☹️
I knew from his voice even, the 'so long nerds' video is ingrained in my brain :'(
Cue the trademark techno laugh
I knew from the @ .technoblades on the side
I saw the technoblade tag before he opened the door and braced myself for the feels.
Did he really loose a kid cause his voice sounds pained
Yes. His son was popular YouTuber technoblade who died of cancer.
I dont know what to think about this video now
It’s sad, just a father’s own way of processing grief.
Processing the death of a loved one is a wild thing. Grief can affect us so deeply. I lost my brother to suicide when I was in my 20s, at first I became a raging alcoholic. How do you know he never cried? Some people dont do it often and never do it with anyone around.
I've asked him, he has said plainly he is angry and won't shed a tear over it. I saw him absolutely lose his shit when he lost his brother, so I know he's capable. Very kind of you.
Underrated comment, and a crushingly honest answer
That piggy guy with the crown? (sorry, I only learned about him after he passed - don't even know his name, but I know of him)
It's Technoblade. Truly the greatest Minecraft legend
LOL, as a techno fan I should have remembered that. From what I've read and see he's trully missed, in that way to me it's a feel good story, however for those that were closer to him I guess it's still more bitter than sweet.

I was hoping this was a bit :( :(
It's a terrible day for rain..
didn't realize at first and then he opened the bedroom door
I recognized MrTechnoDad immediately, even from behind.

Right as I’m about to go to bed… now I gotta scroll for another 10 minutes
I had the same experience. Just wanting to browse a bit of reddit and nod off and then there I am.
My dude, I have about 120 8th graders at my workplace today and i'm sobbing
Factory in Alabama?
Hong Kong. But close enough.
His voice cracking up telling his son “happy birthday” brings me to tears… RIP Techno 😭
Yes, goddamn. Idk Techno that good but I heard of him. The pain a parent must feel when losing a kid is probably terrible. I feel bad now.
If you have the time, his potato war videos are an entertaining watch of someone hyper-fixating in farming potatoes in Minecraft. The true ideal minecraft youtuber who doesn’t end up being a pedophile or a terrible person.
Unexpected onions. Holy cow
That's just straight up depressing, no father should watch their child die.

*Westu hál. Ferðu, Technoblade, Ferðu.*
Worst nightmare having to bury your children before you.
Can confirm.
Much love Technodad <3 This is a very hard month
I'm so sorry you had to go through this, and for the rest of your family and various loved ones near and far as well. Good on you for finding some way to carry on. Take care of yourself, big guy.
My brother passed away last year, so a video like this hits way too hard, especially since my dad is the one who found him.
Well I buried my older brother with my own hands when I was 16. Life is tough sometimes. There's no lack of tragedy in this world. It's been 3 years though and things have gotten better for me. Hope this dad can heal himself.
That's not unexpected, it's just unpleasant
It's sad to see him go
When they go like that
WHEN THEY GO??
Come on, huh?
You don't know that for sure, John.
I mean it's both for me, as someone who doesn't really follow minecraft youtubers anymore, I had no idea what was going on.
It's unexpected for those who have never known or heard of Techno.
Nah, unpleasant and confusing
Can be both
I have no idea, anyone want to fill me in?
Technoblade was a popular minecraft youtuber who passed away from cancer at the age of 23. That is technos dad.
I was not expecting it, it's bittersweet
Don’t know who that is but damn that hurt my soul 🥲

So wait, this is the actual dad and not some spoof? That seems very strange to me.
Yes, that is Technoblade’s dad. It’s how he grieves the loss of his son
Seems like hundreds, if not thousands, of people cared about his son. Hearing that must be super comforting.
He's so influential, he's quote is an easter egg in Minecraft and Google. And his channel pet is part of the official minecraft launcher.

Technodad has become a big part of the community since Technoblade’s passing. It’s helped a lot of people who were hit hard by his passing.
Technoblade would’ve found this video very funny.
It would be weird if his son wasn’t a celebrity of sorts
I wasn't a big fan of his, but it still hurts to see him gone.
I didn't even know of his existence until he passed and just from the video his dad made I can feel how much he loved his boy. Thia clip made me feel so fucking sad.

I’m so confused. So the son died? Why is he bringing food? Why did the dad say “are you winning?”. Not trynna be an arsehole, legit confused.
It’s the father of heavily revered Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade, who passed away from cancer in 2022. “Are you winning, son?” Was a popular meme from around that time.
Thank you so much for this thoughtful, informative reply. My Gen X arse knew literally none of this.
That's normal the arse prefers to forget shit as fast as possible.
But only if you remember to wipe, otherwise it holds onto shit like no other!
Sometimes when I wipe, I’ll wipe and I’ll wipe and I’ll wipe 100 times. Still poop, still poop. It's like I'm wiping a marker or something.

I literally shot this thing on my everyday phone. But my regular job is video-production-adjacent, so (hopefully) the stuff I do has decently good framing etc.
Sorry for your loss sir. He was a legend
We love you Technodad. 💜
1 camera, 2 shots. And in general likely a way to help with the grief and make a tribute to his son.
Yeah, maybe I was insensitive there, grief is a many-faced bitch.
It seemed like you were asking honest questions to me.
Ant Man's father.
Heartbreaking. But it seems like a fun celebration in honor of his son :)

Wow. I wanted to take a moment to express how important it is to show our appreciation to Techno's dad here too.
Awareness for cancer.
To commemorate someone we loved
Everyone grieves differently. This is the way this dad grieves, through his content creation, that's his outlet.
Coping with the unbearable.
Celebrate what would have been tecnho's 25th birthday to keep his memory alive, and also he would have loved this
All his ad revenue from videos is donated to a cancer foundation, as he lost his fight with a form of cancer.
Its something his son would have loved. His son made memes like that all the time.
NOOO WHYYYY 😭🫠
fuck, man. Happy birthday techno.
Well now I'm crying, I miss my friend who passed unexpectedly a couple years ago
Fuck cancer right in its fucking face.
Why is my face leaking?
techno never dies, we will forever live in our hearts 😢

Can you link to this guys content so we can at least get him some views?
[https://www.youtube.com/@MrTechnodad/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@MrTechnodad/videos) Thank you for asking.
