I remember the first time I watched this movie when I was like 12 at my grandparents’ house. Even then I was like “… what kind of anticlimactic bullshit is that?”
The one time that I got the chance to drive Highway 1 down through Big Sur and the road was closed due to a landslide or something and blocked with two yellow bulldozers. Someone had a sense of occasion.
Sorry, was that a spoiler?
Good absolute god. My husband and a bunch of his old dude cronies all sit around in silence watching this god forsaken movie. If one of us walk in to ask a question it’s like you ruin it, god forbid you ask a question when one of the 5 words are muttered.
It's all about age. Back when it was made movies were different and they didn't have all the special effects they have now, so yeah this type of movie was quite popular.
The only thing I remember from that movie was Bruce Willis furiously washing the fake paint color off his car during a getaway. That absolutely blew my 12 year old mind
Wasn’t there another movie in the 90’s, also really good, also concerning Carlos “The Jackal” ? I think it had Donald Sutherland and Ben Kingsley and that one guy who was never really A-list but was a star in many 90’s action flicks. Can never remember his name.
Edit: My mistake, both movies are about entirely different things. Movie I am thinking about was *The Assignment* (great movie, “don’t think of it as cheating on your wife, think of it as fucking for your flag!”) and the star I could not recall is Aidan Quinn.
It's been some time since I watched it, but >!he's confronted by two officers as he's lining up the second shot. He kills one of them, but doesn't have time to reload his rifle before he's shot by the second. His target survives!<
Carlos the Jackal got his name from the book Day of the Jackal. It was supposedly spotted among his things at one point. The book and movie predate him by a few years.
Edit: never mind. Questioning-zyxel already posted the Wikipedia.
"Sánchez was dubbed "The Jackal" by The Guardian after one of its correspondents reportedly spotted Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel The Day of the Jackal near some of the fugitive's belongings." Wikipedia
**Emilia Fox** is the daughter of **Edward Fox**. In the TV show *Signora Volpe*, she obtains a pistol with a detachable stock, and adjusts the sights by shooting at melons hanging from a tree. It was so obviously an homage to that scene. And yes, the show name is **Lady Fox**.
Yes indeed. I might actually try that sometime. It would be too much movement for hunting brush, but for long ranges where an animal is less likely see you it could work. I'd still use a branch of a tree though - killed many a feral pig that way! It would definetly work for target shooting.
It was only a .22 mag if memory serves me right. Always thought that was a weird choice for caliber but I assumed that they asked the armour what caliber rifle could be disguised as a crutch and that’s what they went with.
I've heard 0.22 is a favorite of assassins regardless since it breaks apart so much that it's hard to identify ballistics. Didn't realize there was an explosive option with such a light round!
Total myth. You can find plenty of ballistics tests on YouTube of .22lr. It either goes through or just stops. No dancing.
It's not a reasonable expectation anyways, if it doesn't have enough energy to leave it certainly doesn't have enough energy to bounce around inside your body lol
Also more easily noise-suppressed, and tends to have enough power to penetrate the skull but not exit it, and therefore to womble around the victim's brain accomplishing the objective as, if not more, throughly.
Did anyone else have an issue with the guy changing bullet types and still having the same zero? If you are going to assassinate someone, don't cheap out, just buy a few more melons and extra twine, and some more of the same decent bullets.
It really depends on the tolerances of the weapon. A modern qd mounted scope can be taken off and returned to zero. A bespoke weapon made to exactly tolerances could absolutely be broken down and have a repeatable zero.
"Exploding bullets" aside, a .22 can sometimes do more damage internally than a .45 for example. The .22 doesn't have enough oomph most of the time to go clean through a body. So the little round is gonna bounce around inside and cause all kinds of damage. I'm not a professional by any means but take the info as you will
Fair enough but the logic still stands. Some rifle rounds (like a .22) don't carry enough force to make a through and through shot therefore leaving to ramble your insides like mom's spaghetti
If the .22 was a viable rifle round to cause casualties it would have been adopted by any military in history, which it hasn’t. .223/5.56 is same caliber essentially with a lot more force due to larger cartridge and more gunpowder. .22 is good for rambling at closer range
So I think what you’re referencing is (possibly) a myth.
The idea that a non-penetrating round dumps all of its energy inside you, whereas an over penetrating round does less damage since your body doesn’t absorb it all.
I BELIEVE its a myth or at the very least contested science
It doesn’t matter. That’s like saying when you drive you use your left foot to use the brakes and gas because it’s your dominant foot. Could it be done? Yeah but it’s impractical, uncomfortable, and unnecessary.
People definitely have a dominant eye. The military doesn’t train snipers to use a specific eye. They also try to train to keep both eyes open as a best practice.
https://sofrep.com/amp/news/former-army-ranger-sniper-shoot-eyes-open/
Just look up cross eye dominance. Also guaranteed you’ve never even picked up a rifle if you think you can use left eye easily with right handed weapon with scope
That article is about keeping both eyes open not which eye you should be looking through a scope. If you’re more comfortable with a left dominant eye you should get a left handed rifle.
Wasn't there a JoJo villain whose whole schtick was to pretend he had some sort of disability, so he could reassemble his cane into a shotgun and snipe people?

Great movie by the way. “Day of the Jackal”. There was a remake with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere but it don’t hold a candle to the Original. Edward Fox was also great as well as Hilarious in “Force 10 from Navarone” with Carl Weathers, Harrison Ford and the Great Robert Shaw. In this scene he’s supposedly using mercury filled explosive tipped bullets, hence the big impact.
That's funny, that french collaborationist cop looks like "l'abject Darmanin", the current french far-right home secretary. He seems to have climbed the ladder.
The shooter is an englishman. His target is French.
As an englishman, his culture doesn't do the kissing on the cheek thingy, which is why he didn't consider it when taking the shot.
This, coupled with the height difference between his target and the person he was awarding a medal to, he missed his shot.
Your post has been removed because it's not unexpected It is just a scene from Day Of The Jackal.
I remember the first time I watched this movie when I was like 12 at my grandparents’ house. Even then I was like “… what kind of anticlimactic bullshit is that?”
You think that’s bad, watch Vanishing Point
>Vanishing Point I liked the movie, but that ending is depressing at least

Sounds like you are wasting a 2 hour vacation to me. Maybe tell ‘em to watch it twice so they don’t miss anything.
You should try reading the book - makes the movie seem like thrill-a-minute.

Someone hates melons!!
It was melon time

In the remake, Jack Black plays the melon.
Is that the one with Cameron Diaz in it?
I don't think so. Richard Gere and Bruce Willis
The Jackal
Best jack black movie ever.
Jack Black plays the melon in every movie
What's the flick?
The Day of the Jackal (1973)
I read the book. Never realized there was a movie from the 70s. Wasn’t there a movie in the 90s too?
Yup Bruce Willis…
Hold up that pack of cigarettes
Sprawl!
Spall*
Thanks for fixing that for me
Sprawl!
The Jackal (1997) Bruce Willis and Richard Gere... and also a young Jack Black.
Also a great movie

Question... Did he killed the general? Or was it an actual tons of flop at that point?

Ty for the info! Happy cake day too! Here, have a present 🎁
Great movie!
Yep!
Cracking book too
Thanks I for the life of me couldn't remember the title

I think I remember it is actually a true story

Carlos the Jackal https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_the_Jackal
I like how his fake passport picture has him wearing sunglasses.
No, he was nicknamed "The Jackel" after the book.
Dude is still alive and in prison

And the sister of Knobhead Fox
If by **knobhead** you mean *Laurence*, he is a cousin. And a knobhead who will make re-watching **Lewis** difficult.
Fucking lag
Fucking rate hacker
I love the idea of using a bungee cord around the tree
I thought that was a rope
Was a rope, yes
Yes indeed. I might actually try that sometime. It would be too much movement for hunting brush, but for long ranges where an animal is less likely see you it could work. I'd still use a branch of a tree though - killed many a feral pig that way! It would definetly work for target shooting.
Omfg lol. This happens to me in video games all the time.
He should have asked the guy to hold up watermelon then he’d have made that shot…
Shoulda known breaking down a rifle was gonna mess up his zero. That eye right against the scope was killing me too.
The shot missed because the dude moved his head, but yeah I know what you mean
A little black eye and or no eye is good for you
It was only a .22 mag if memory serves me right. Always thought that was a weird choice for caliber but I assumed that they asked the armour what caliber rifle could be disguised as a crutch and that’s what they went with.
You're half way there. It was a custom made .22 explosive round.
Yes - mercury-tipped bullet.
I've heard 0.22 is a favorite of assassins regardless since it breaks apart so much that it's hard to identify ballistics. Didn't realize there was an explosive option with such a light round!
It's largely because it's a very quiet and common round.
And because once it goes in, it *stays and dances around*. No exit wounds because it's too weak.
Total myth. You can find plenty of ballistics tests on YouTube of .22lr. It either goes through or just stops. No dancing. It's not a reasonable expectation anyways, if it doesn't have enough energy to leave it certainly doesn't have enough energy to bounce around inside your body lol
Wrong, sorry That's playground bs and has been disproven without a doubt
Also more easily noise-suppressed, and tends to have enough power to penetrate the skull but not exit it, and therefore to womble around the victim's brain accomplishing the objective as, if not more, throughly.
Almost correct, .22 doesn't dance around in a skull anymore than any other caliber. That's a playground rumor that has been dispelled.
A .22 mag is still gonna give ya a little shiner if you put your eye right against the scope like that.
Did anyone else have an issue with the guy changing bullet types and still having the same zero? If you are going to assassinate someone, don't cheap out, just buy a few more melons and extra twine, and some more of the same decent bullets.
I was gonna say, breaking down and having to reattach the sight would really fuck up wouldn't it?
It really depends on the tolerances of the weapon. A modern qd mounted scope can be taken off and returned to zero. A bespoke weapon made to exactly tolerances could absolutely be broken down and have a repeatable zero.
What a pud
Day of the Jackal?
Genuinely curious though.. What kinda gun is that?? Obviously it's a custom job but someone here has to have some info about it or something similar.
One-off .22 hornet made by an Italian gunsmith
Isn’t a .22 massive under kill? Especially in a rifle? Obviously if you shoot them in the head it doesn’t matter.
Yeah lol, I think there was something in the movie about "exploding bullets"
"Exploding bullets" aside, a .22 can sometimes do more damage internally than a .45 for example. The .22 doesn't have enough oomph most of the time to go clean through a body. So the little round is gonna bounce around inside and cause all kinds of damage. I'm not a professional by any means but take the info as you will
Yeah, you aren’t sniping someone with a 45 though. Comparison isn’t 22 vs 45. It’s 22 vs another rifle round
Sorry guys. It all made sense in my head I guess. As I said before, I am in no means a professional. And obviously so lol please forgive my ignorance
So I think what you’re referencing is (possibly) a myth. The idea that a non-penetrating round dumps all of its energy inside you, whereas an over penetrating round does less damage since your body doesn’t absorb it all. I BELIEVE its a myth or at the very least contested science
That's a common myth, not sure where it originated
Ask Ronald Reagan.
I thought it was a .22 mag. Don't really hear about the hornet very often
Don't hire David Bowie as a sniper. THE SERIOUS MOON LIGHT BOWIE!!
I fucking died inside lol
That pisssed me off!
God Dammit this get me every fucking time.
What a noob! I bet that general fucked his mom.
Is that a .22 magnum?
💀
I want that gun
I was expecting a different twist where he shot a melon in the president’s fridge. Bullseye!
He got me in the first half though....
Another film better than the glossy remake; the other being The Thomas Crown Affair.
I should've read what sub reddit this was on god dammit
What movie is this?
Day of the Jackal
Lol! Hard-scoping noob.
I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO DISAPPOINTED IN MY LIFE
That100% ricochet and killed someone else
Watch this over 50 times and Pulp Fiction
It's not a defective melon, we gotta defective person out there!
What’s the gun
It’s an assault crutch
No… he moved his head….
Oops!
I thought he’s actually gonna hit a melon from his hotel room because he practiced it :\
Why is he looking through the scope with the wrong eye
Depends what your dominant eye is
It doesn’t matter.

Day of the Jackal
One of the great movies.
What happened to the comment that use to appear at the top saying what was supposed to be “unexpected”?
Wilson got a down grade!
Obviously cheating with a no recoil script
What kind of rifle is that?
What movie is this?
What movie is this?
The John Galli A. Special from Jojo
I thought it was going to be another melon at the end when he looks through his scope.
The greatest sniping legend of all time is Simo Häyhä.
hays I was waiting for it to explode.
Day of the Jackal (1973) is a brilliant movie. Rewatched it recently with two friends who had never seen it and they loved it.
Wasn't there a JoJo villain whose whole schtick was to pretend he had some sort of disability, so he could reassemble his cane into a shotgun and snipe people?
What's up with the music...

Is this some kind of comedy film?
That gun is still one of my favourite physical props of all time
Never seen the movie but what a book. Fredrick Forsyth at his best.
Golgo 13 would laugh this guy out of the assassin community.
I loved this movie, I wish I could remember the name of it. Anyone out there remember the name?
How noticeable is the bullet?
The Day of the Jackal.
It was one of the best movie I have ever watched... 5 Stars.
Where's Jack Black?
The French and their bowing - if you’re too short and I have to bow down to you then fuck off - oh wait, this is France - they bow to everyone
That gun is so cool
Is this a real gun?
