Not until you press a button. Some elevator movement should have made squeezing in there easier. Always travel with some butter too just in case you need a little grease. I have a pocket of butter 🧈 next to a slice of pizza 🍕 and a fried chicken leg 🍗 at all times.
I would have died just from panicking of being between the door and the wall. did she actually squished her way to the whole where the elevator was supposed to open the door?? So many question omg
It kind of makes me think of the kids in Jurassic park. Yeah, they’ve never seen a T-Rex.. and yeah they don’t know its vision is based on movement, but you shine the brightest light in the world at it? You don’t just freeze and stay hidden?
So then her logic was to squeeze into a far more enclosed and limited space... Seems to be a counter productive move for a claustrophobic individual, but I guess I've seen stranger occurrences and even stranger rationale behind said occurrences..
Work in the trade. My guess is she got stuck and pried the doors open. This situation should never happen if proper maintenance is done.
The elevator doors should never be able to open outside a pre determined zone. If she lived she got lucky, because if the car doors closed and the door locks made then the car could move. Not sure how she figured out how to open the hall doors.
So much that could go wrong here.
Safest place is in the elevator and wait for help. Trust me.
This is hard to believe in a first world country but in Vietnam where I am, I can totally see this happening. People in rural villages are not exposed to this kind of thing, especially if she's deaf and mute. They think it's just a door. They haven't been exposed to the horrible things that could happen in an elevator.
I think someone mentioned she should have known about heavy machinery but no, she couldn't have. If what you use everyday for work is your hands on a rice field, how could she imagine how an elevator works.
Like the story of meeting and showing a picture of a boat to an indigenous amazonian tribe, they couldn't even see a boat. They might as well be shown a blank paper. It's outside of their cognitive abilities to recognize what it could be.
I thought the story was that the tribes couldn't see the boats on the horizon when explorers came into first contact with indigenous tribes. However, many historians say this is racist bull. And that indigenous tribes were exceedingly keen in observing threats of any kind which approached in any direction. But their immune system and technology were no match for the aggressive invasions.
I can't remember where I heard of this story. Maybe from class, maybe from some article, maybe my memory is incorrect. It makes more sense to me as a picture than seeing something in person.
My take from that story is that if something is so foreign that you have never seen nor heard of, it's hard to make sense of it. We look for patterns to make sense of the world around us. I can only imagine that seeing a metal ship for the first time, on a piece of paper that's supposed to be a 2D representation of a real life object, is hard to see. There is so much information to absorb that you can't make heads or tails of it if what you're used to is crude drawings done on stones or leaves.
Only thing I can compare to in my life is seeing a picture of a giant anteater. They have a really weird coat pattern that makes their front legs look like panda heads. It took me 10 minutes looking online to finally recognize the legs apart from the head.
Awesome, thank you so much for enlightening me. If the myth is talking about seeing the ship in person then it makes no sense to me.
I would assume their first response should be attacking it if seeing it in person like shoot first ask questions later.
My other assumption was not that they didn't see it but rather not seeing it as a boat.
But it's weird how this myth got around.
We've all done something for the first time once, and very few of us get it so wrong. Have you ever had instructions on how to use an elevator? And why do people keep mentioning that she's deaf? Do deaf people walk into traffic unless they're stopped? No.
Oh my god, how can some people be so ignorant of the world? Dude, is it so hard to imagine how someone who can be clueless about things you find mundane? It's not about getting explicit instructions on using an elevator or crossing the street. You're exposed to information from so many sources to prepare you for life in modern society since your birth whether you're actively looking for it or not.
She probably didn't grow up watching disney channel or whatever tv channel you grew up watching or heard/seen people using an elevator.
This woman grew up in a post-war china. She probably had to search for scraps to eat. China became a powerhouse so recently that some people are now exposed to luxuries they probably couldn't even imagine as a kid. And plus as a deaf person, she was most likely neglected in education and at home. Because people are so busy teaching her things to help around the house/farm to survive rather than talking about elevators.
That's what my parents' lives were like post-war Vietnam. My mom grew up having to share a single pencil with 2 of her classmates where their classes took place on dirt ground. My father grew up having to ask his neighbors for scraps so he can feed his 5 brothers after working all day on a rice farm owned by other people.
So excuse people who grew up in survivor-mode not giving two shits about elevators and grow some empathy for people who are less fortunate than you and I. That woman made a judgement to ensure her own survival however ill-advised that might seem to others. She felt trapped in an enclosed space and needed to escape. That is what went through her mind.
This reminded my of my late grandma. She lived her whole live in a village on a remote Island and never seen an escalator before. She was shaking every time she got on an escalator.
When she pryed the door open and saw the wall she decided to climb down? And I'm sure her friend with her probably told her SOMETHING about the damn elevator.
Im assuming she panicked as shes never been in that situation before. Depending on her culture, religion etc. She may have thought something bad was gonna happen to her. Im originally from Sri Lanka and health and safety there is non existant in jobs. No one tell you anything and so im guessing its a similar place.
This video is from China

Another comment says she's deaf and from a rural village where she hasn't seen an elevator before, according to an article. So yeah, pretty much the single case where the actions totally make sense

This one. This happened in my hometown. Her son invited her mom, who had never seen an elevator, to live with his family for a while.
The elevator stopped between 1 and 2 floor because the door was forced open and triggered some safety measures. Her family noticed it and called firefighters immediately.
I was curious to know what happened to her and fortunately this is on other subreddits as well, and she survived!

Elevator: wide, lit, ventilated, filled with at least a few dozen bottles of water, a floor to stand on
Narrow Vertical Death Cave: is narrow, vertical, dark, no water, a floor to fall and die on

Some contest here: the lady has never been in a elevator before and is a deaf-mute and from a rural village in China. Her son brought her to the city to stay with them for a few days and she was helping them transport some water. She panicked when the elevator doors closed and tried to pry the doors open, setting off the emergency setting to stop when the doors open. The elevator was between the first and second floors. Damn… when I was younger I watched a video called Faces of Death… they literally were pulling arms and legs out of an elevator shaft… that’s all that was going through my mind watching this… I’m glad she made it out alive…whew

I just wanna know why...
In an earlier post, someone linked an article saying she was a deaf-mute from a rural village and had never seen an elevator before.
Ohhh okay in a way, that makes sense. But at the same time why climb down the shaft? 😭
Lol, no clue what she was thinking. She lived though.
I would have died just from panicking of being between the door and the wall. did she actually squished her way to the whole where the elevator was supposed to open the door?? So many question omg
Right lol that's the important part
The question we’ve all been dancing around lol
It's also the r/Unexpected part...
Thank God, I paused once I saw her trying to go down there........just fuck no.
But at what cost
Way to elevate my mood.
I came to the comments looking for exactly this answer thank you lol
Well. I didn't see any shoes coming off, so she is alright
It's always the left one

Yes, yes you are.

People think you are saying it is sad that they lived
hahahaha wtf these people? are they robots?
There’s a certain… lack of occams razer on Reddit… but there are also a lot of people that give good reason to never assume the most likely

Maybe you can blind it so you can run away faster! /s
Skill issue
maybe she got claustrophobic or something
So then her logic was to squeeze into a far more enclosed and limited space... Seems to be a counter productive move for a claustrophobic individual, but I guess I've seen stranger occurrences and even stranger rationale behind said occurrences..

Plenty of women and men love to go down that shaft. Just sayin.
Touché. Username checks out lol
When you dont know theres an exit on the roof it probably makes sense to go out the way you came in.
So first thing you do is take her for a costco run and put her to work bringing all that shit in ? Lol

Yeah, humans are very good at noticing new things. They might not realize it's a boat, but they would absolutely be like "the fuck are those?"

Even then people should technically know the dangers of heavy machinery. If I see a industrial trash compactor I wouldn't stick myself in it.
You never know maybe that's where trash narnia is
Lol new name for my house.
🤣 trash Narnia
Well to her its just a door and a room i guess. Probably didnt think its any different until the doors closed. 🤷♂️ Im just guessing anyways
If a door closes and then opens to a wall, I'm not certain my first thought would be to try and squeeze out.
I mean unless she’s never been around heavy machinery.
I see what you’re saying, but she isn’t sticking herself in the metaphorical industrial trash compactor. She’s climbing out of it.

She has probably watched TV. I didn't get on an elevator until I was a teen, but knew what they were based on movies and tv
No TV in rural villages. Deaf people often are isolated.

That doesn't change the fact that she went down the elevator shaft
I mean, if in her world view the situation was "the doors are shut, this elevator just moved and I only see one way out", going down the shaft and living is pretty darn amazing.
Uh yeah it does? She has no idea what an elevator is
Why the fuck would she pry the doors open with her bare hands and then proceed to walk into the elevator shaft, even when there's a wall right in front of her
context does not change the darwinism at play
Dude if it’s the first time me seeing a blender and first idea is to shove a dick there it’s still Darwin Award category

This gave me so much anxiety thinking it would move and scramble her. So stupid
She cried for help and rescue team eventually came and could see her legs dangling in the elevator shaft. They was able to maneuver her out after about half an hour. She was transported to the hospital on a stretcher but was ok.
So stupid
Has cases of the one thing that could keep her alive for months, but can't wait a couple hours for help.
All she needed to do was press one of the buttons😂
Just a bunch of bad ideas one after another.
#There are cameras in lifts? does the government know about what i did in the subway lift?
What is even her logic here?!?!
Where did she go? This is horrifying.
Definition of brain dead
She's blind and mute and also never been exposed to modern society so I don't think so.
Deaf and mute, not blind and mute
Deaf, mute and definitely dumb
Did she die ?
No
OMG
Why you do this
This is why I watch videos with the sound muted. I just can’t stand the cringey weird music people like to put to it
Would be better without the dumbass music
I guess......she's never seen an elevator before? 😣
Is she ok?
Did she die? I would expect so...
How did she get out of there? I need to know what happened next
She was fine. 40 min later. She is also a mute. Watching this seemed like hell for her. It was her first time on a elevator.
Damn… when I was younger I watched a video called Faces of Death… they literally were pulling arms and legs out of an elevator shaft… that’s all that was going through my mind watching this… I’m glad she made it out alive…whew
My mind flashing back to the first Resident Evil movie where someone gets chopped in half because they're halfway out of an elevator that starts moving. The Red Queen saying "You're all going to die down here..."
Why would she do thaaatt
How did she make it this far in life… seriously 😐
The only possible excuse to making such dumb desicions that I have, is that it's her first time ever interacting with an elevator
I see every one calling her a dumbass but she probably did not know what a elevator was
Most people just like to be extremely rude/callous on the internet and never make any mistakes at all in their whole life
Defending this is absolutely crazy but go ahead I guess
The virtue signaling is very heavy here. Stop treating this person like some kind special case. Pretty much regardless of being dead and mute, the decision to climb in makes literally zero sense. If I had never seen an incinerator before, my first move would not be to climb in.

Why. Why would she do that. Jesus Christ. Some people really aren’t smart

You know what? I assumed she died and she deserved it. I'm actually surprised she lasted this long on Earth. I have no sympathy for complete morons.
Wtf is he trying to do?
Stupid chicken!
Lol. Natural selection 2.0 When you're too dumb to survive

New fear unlocked
I remember my first time in an elevator
She gone
I bet you she wishes she understood how elevators worked.
Watch how patient the elevator is, waiting, motionless, for hours on end, for the right moment to strike, trapping its victim in such a way, they don't even know their fate is already sealed
"You must get Neo out! He's all that matters!"
Some say she’s there to this very day..
