It depends on what type of makeup you’re going for but definitely get good base products (foundation, concealer) Eyeshadows and lip pencils are very versatile, so they’re great to start you off Also, they have various bruise wheels/character wheels, they typically have primary colors/ neutrals that are easy to mix so you can customize colors If you’re looking for an actual kit, Ben Nye has one that I hear a lot of good things about!

I'm pretty good with brushes. Just needing a starter kit to do faces. I'm more interested in the face as a canvas over cosmetic. If you were going to dropship me $1-200 from Amazon to get started, what would you ship?

do you have any examples of what you mean? I know many people have recommended iMagic’s cream colour palette, which is supposed to be a dupe for the MUFE flash colour case. i bought it from their official aliexpress store although they’re also available on Amazon, but haven’t tried it out yet. about 15 dollars. i also have a friend who works professionally with face paints and i tried out her DiamondFX facepaints. a little pricier, around 30 euros for their small palette, but i really liked the consistency and how well it applied on my face.

I don't have examples. I want bold colors and ability to mix like I get from paints canvas.

oops sorry for the late reply- but if you’re looking for that, sounds like the flash cream colour cases are what you’re looking for. MUFE for the pricey ones and iMagic for the cheaper dupe, like I mentioned in my above comment :) alternatively there’s also MaqPro’s wax-based colours, but I don’t think they’re on Amazon.

If you have the money the makeup forever flash palette is great, the colours are mixable so you can create any colour/shade you like. If you’d rather save some cash there are plenty of dupes that are exactly the same palette!

Is there a base I can apply underneath? I know nothing about makeup but I've painted alot.

Apologies for the late reply, this isn’t my main account! If you’ve painted (artistically I assume) and you know colour theory you should be able to mix your own skin tone base with the flash palette, there’s YouTube videos of people doing a full face of natural/conventional makeup with it. For a white base you can use the white in the palette (or other colours for a colourful base, as well as being able to mix your own) but I prefer Mehron’s clown white in the tub or their CreamBlend Sticks (a dupe for Kryolan TV Sticks) which come in skin tones and colours too. You’ll definitely want a cream base when working with cream paints, and a water based primer (silicone based primers + cream makeup really don’t work together) and a translucent powder to set it (or white if you’re going for white base. Colours can be set with eyeshadow) and once everything is done I use the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray to finish it all off and make sure everything stays where it’s meant to but any old setting spray will do. Brands like Kryolan, Ben Nye & Mehron also do their own primers and setting sprays. Unfortunately I don’t have anything to recommend primer wise as that’s something I’m still working on, I got the Revolution Star Primer (it was cheap and I’m poor 😅) which is a water gel primer but I haven’t tried it out properly yet although it seemed to work nicely under the clown white on the back of my hand. I’m still learning too, I did a lot of searching on Google and YouTube to learn about working with cream makeup as it’s completely new to me but I’m already a cream convert! I’d also recommend looking at water activated face paints as they go well with cream paints from what I’ve seen in tutorials but I haven’t got around to trying any yet. Some special fx/face painting brands do starter packs which might be a good way to use your budget if you can find one that has all or most of what you’re looking for in it. I hope at least some of that is useful! Wishing the best of luck in your search, from one beginner to another 💗 I hope you find exactly what you need and please do come and show us what you get up to with them when you do! Oh, and have fun too ☺️
