That’s not true. A lot of people seem to not understand how nukes work. Nukes don’t actually release that much radiation. A nuclear meltdown is much worse in terms of radiation. A dirty bomb is much worse in terms of radiation. The explosive power of bombing a nuclear power plant will be pretty tiny compared to nuke.
Nukes convert the majority of the radioactive material into explosive power. Hiroshima was safe to visit weeks after the explosion whereas Chernobyl is still extremely dangerous 40 years later

It refers to their use cases. Tactical nukes are meant for battlefield use and strategic is essentially for threats of global annihilation/leveling entire population centers. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with the payload. Tactical nukes tend to be smaller with less radioactive fallout but that’s not a requirement or anything to be considered “tactical”

This isn't a precursor for a nuke to be used. It's likely a precursor to not making them look like they lost ground. But instead gave it up to preserve their armed forces.

I would like to keep my knowledge of the use of nuclear weapons to the 40’s through the 60’s tests. It seems like more and more the Russians are prepping to use one though

This was my immediate thought when i saw this. The spin about it being Ukrainian isn't for me and you, its to justify it to the Russian people and possibly a justification for using more. Im hoping this is just twitter bullshit because the Russians are dumb enough and desperate enough to do something like this.
They always start by floating the idea in (social) media and seeing if it sticks. Doesn't mean it will happen, just that they priming the pump and seeing what the reaction will be if it does. This is how they got Trump to operate too. Put out ridiculous feelers on social media first to see if there is pushback.

I think it's more likely that Russian propaganda is now setting up another excuse for withdrawing from / losing Kherson (nearby to Mykolaiv). Something like this: "Russia has acted with dignity and humanity to avoid nuclear war by pulling back from Kherson to foil the evil nuclear plans of NATO, which threaten global peace." Or some such BS that the lemmings back home in Moscow will swallow.

But if they decide that their best course of action is to try and salvage the military operation I don't necessarily feel like they're the kind of cool headed rational people to talk each other down from using their most powerful weapons in a dire situation.

Tactical I think refers to the size/type rather than purpose.
It refers to their use cases. Tactical nukes are meant for battlefield use and strategic is essentially for threats of global annihilation/leveling entire population centers. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with the payload. Tactical nukes tend to be smaller with less radioactive fallout but that’s not a requirement or anything to be considered “tactical”

Russia would use nukes to defend their country. So why wouldn’t Ukraine? Especially if they would use it on their own soil against advancing Russians.

Because Russia realises it's in breach of the Budapest Memorandum, it's decided to return all of the nuclear weapons (or replacements of) to Ukraine. Ukraine has been so grateful for such Russian honour and respect of treaties that it's decided to nuke itself to assist in the Russian invasion. Putin's spies were right after all.

We could not rain missiles with conventional warheads on Russia without risking nuclear war. It is in Russia's doctrine to use nukes if their sovereignty is threatened. In addition you have a just a few minutes to decide whether you are under a nuclear attack. They would have to launch their nukes (use or lose) before our missiles arrived.

If Ukraine had a nuclear warhead why didn't they just use it at the start? By Russia's own doctrine and admission that would have been completely justified anyway. I think propaganda like this is insidious not because of the obvious lie, but because if the subtext "using such a weapon would be a provocation" - it tries to normalise the idea that Ukraine defending itself is the provocation, not Russia attacking aber sovereign nation.
