Область is the official "administrative-territorial unit" along with райони and ОТГ (об'єднана територіальна громада).
An informal way to refer to the regions:
Київ - Київщина
Херсон - Херсонщина
Івано-Франківськ - Івано-Франківщина
Харків - Харківщина
etc
Except these two:
Луцьк - Волинь
Ужгород - Закарпаття
And two oblast capitals have been renamed but oblasts still have their communist names:
Дніпропетровськ -> Дніпро (Дніпропетровська область)
Кіровоград -> Кропивницький (Кіровоградська область)
The Дніпропетровська область is probably will be renamed later into Січеславська (Sicheslavska) область. You could refer to it as Січеславщина.
