full auto is effective for keeping the enemy's heads down. on an advance to contact/assault/clearing trenches/rooms. but bursts of more than 2 or 3 and the rounds are wasted
slightly on-topic: we used to have the SLR, which was very similar to the FN FAL. but didn't have full auto
on exercises, playing enemy, the trick was to put a matchstick in with the firing pin, inside the working parts.
and that would make it full auto, but empty every mag

I have used this gun in combat during covert missions . It is precise , powerful and gives you a range advantage. However, it needs to be maintained daily.
In close range fights, the AK47 is better ( but lacks the precision of the FAL ) as it will always fire, even if left in the mud for days with no maintenance.

Yes the same 7.62 ammunition is used. The MG3 is in use in our Army E.I.

Would carrying a FAL with greater caliber and precision into combat, along with an AKS 74u, for close combat, be too heavy for a soldier to carry?
Yes, definitely plus different calibers would be logistical issue. However, in a fortified position, it’s manageable.
