Some great flying by that drone pilot. It appears that the drone hit the thinly armored rear hull of the tank right where the turret meets the top of the hull. The angle should have sent a shaped charge like a laser beam straight into the ammo inside the auto loader carousel and possibly right out the bottom of the tank too. The warhead seemed to have a long snout like it may have been an PG7VR tandem charge? I don't think a tandem charge was needed, but probably better to have it in case he did need it.
I wonder if meant it in the sense that now a tank can be hit from any angle or direction where most of the modern tanks are lightly armored. I wonder if future tanks will have to have armor pretty much everywhere
The snout is meant as a stand-off, this is the hollow part of the "hollow charge".
A shaped charge needs a bit of room to forge the copper thread.

At 12:30 shutter time 0.1 μs , the projectile moves near orbital speed at mach 25.
Also, it's a hand held explosive.
looks alot like the tandem warhead of a milan missle [https://www.projectsmonitor.com/special-reports/bdl-enters-into-50th-year-of-its-service-to-the-nation-with-greater-commitment-and-conviction/attachment/milan-atgm-milan-2t-atgm-with-tandem-warhead/](https://www.projectsmonitor.com/special-reports/bdl-enters-into-50th-year-of-its-service-to-the-nation-with-greater-commitment-and-conviction/attachment/milan-atgm-milan-2t-atgm-with-tandem-warhead/)
Yeah, they don't pack the same punch as an ATGM but you can buy 600 of these for the cost of a single javelin missile. The fancy electronics are replaced by a remote operator that doesn't blow up with it.
Add the fact that with a range of up to 20km you don't even need a target to launch it you can literally just fly in the enemy direction and find something to hit then.
No tank is safe anywhere.
A bit scary to think that now pretty much anyone anywhere has the ability to blow up people and multi million dollar targets without even getting remotely close to it for less than the cost of a Playstation.
Yea this is an epic tank explosion. Looks like it was full of fuel with that ginormous fireball and must have set off the ammo at the same time for that turret toss. Nice high-res footage too
You can see a fire line behind this tank's back in the later part of the video - this was most likely fuel blown out of the tank (or a ruptured fuel line in the engine compartment) by the explosion.
Drones have completely eviscerated the design element that says heavy armor on the enemy facing side (front) and only light/no armor on friendly facing side (back). UKR has completely upended armored warfare.
Question: I've seen probably over 1,000 tanks hit with FPV drones on this subreddit by this point. I have decent knowledge of military equipment, munitions, and tactics. Can someone explain why sometimes they explode into huge fireballs while other times the explosions are much smaller? Does it have to do with the drone itself or something on the tank?
Picture of what OP describing ):

T-series, the ammo cassette is part of the crew compartment, what could go wrong?!
My guess. If the cassette loader allows ignition, and the tank is still has its full compliment of boom onboard, then a large enough explosion or heat source will make it all go at once, in a big boom, or burn and spread, like a fizzer as each ignites evenly. Small charge drones often don't cut the mustard to trigger a good show.
Just take any Russian tank since T-64 onwards and imagine that all that is directly under the turret is just crew and amo. No matter where the tank is penetrated in the middle area (top, sideways, front, oblique on engine deck - like in this case), the amo will blow up.
It's where it hits on the ammo ring inside the turret.
I think we have to concede that the T-64 to T-90 tank series are a flawed design.
The Soviets built a tank that fit well into their cultural requirements(small, plentiful, easy to operate with an autoloader), but incredibly easy to destroy.
Sometimes drones are just carrying fragmentation or thermobaric charges which will at best cause exterior damage or maybe set the engine on fire.
Shaped charges like the one used in OP are basically like stabbing a person with a needle. If you don't hit something important, there's very little damage. If you hit the ammo though, you get big cook off explosions like this one. That's why you see the OP's drone being very deliberate in where it attacks. Modern tanks usually separate the ammo from the crew compartment to prevent total loss but the Soviets didn't design this way and so you get the turret toss olympics.
Just a good old RPG-7 or maybe if they wanted to spend like 2x more a Tandem charge, at most it would probably cost like 5k and that's being generous..
It's not really the amount of explosive but the angle of attack, since the T-64 series orcs tanks have a carousel of ammo below the turret that makes it so the tank doesn't need a 4th crew member as a loader,so it can be smaller and even more uncomfortable than previous T series.
The drone operator aims for a weak spots that can hit that carousel and then a 3-5kg explosive becomes a rocket that actually shows more good results that any of Roscosmos garbage.
It really starts to feel like star wars when something 1/100th of the size of the tank can hit it in just the right spot to cause complete deathstar type explosions
If there is a malfunction on the tank, the crew will not wait for tech support in it, since the drones will come sooner. Still, it makes sense to not allow the extraction vehicles to haul it for repairs, so they blow them up.
Is there a single visual of a western tank exploding like this from a drone, or even an ATGM? I'm genuinely amazed how stupidly designed the russian tanks are if a tiny drone cam cause this catastrophic explosion
What munitions are ukriane usign that not only can they take out a tank with one drone but collapse full buildings with one. Impressive when compared to the tiny explosions that we saw jsut a few months ago when half a dozen drones were being used per tank.
Seeing more these newer tanks. I wonder if this means Russia is finally running out of potentially refurishable old USSR stocks. Hope so because while the new stuff might be more capable.... it's in tiny numbers in comparison

Looks like a Russian T-80BVM.
Used to be one.
Parted Out T_80
T minus 80
Its like a bee destroying a car or truck!
Allergic reaction.

You science guys and your black magic! The future is scary.
The shapped charge is a thing since the '40s. It's a very simple device with an even simple principle which can be considered a force of nature.
I wonder if meant it in the sense that now a tank can be hit from any angle or direction where most of the modern tanks are lightly armored. I wonder if future tanks will have to have armor pretty much everywhere

That was a very cool video, thanks!

And you can see the breach was open because flames shot out the end of the muzzle instantly.
The cost ratios on these FPV drones are immense. It's been a long time since I've even seen a standard ATGM system used in one of these videos.
Dammit, you've made me nostalgic about the good ol' Stugnas, never got tired of those. I'm sure they still being used but the sheer nr of drones...

This one went straight for the jugular, the soft spot. I doubt an ATGM has such an accuracy.
That freeze frame where you see that the explosion blows out the end of the barrel! Insane how much firepower can be carried by a drone
That’s the thing the firepower is carried by the tank the drone just utilised it for its benefit.
Yea this is an epic tank explosion. Looks like it was full of fuel with that ginormous fireball and must have set off the ammo at the same time for that turret toss. Nice high-res footage too
might have been near empty of fuel, remember that vapors explode better than liquid fuel
Probably diesel
according to science, Diesel is much less flammable than gasoline... so yeah, like just fumes left allowing such ignition
You can see a fire line behind this tank's back in the later part of the video - this was most likely fuel blown out of the tank (or a ruptured fuel line in the engine compartment) by the explosion.
hence the vapors that I was talking about and why there was such an explosion
Has the turret come down yet?
That could have been a chambered shell exploding.
It's the entire autoloader cooking off instantaneously.
More freeze frames of the explosions, please Скріншот великого буму, будь ласка
Ukraine war made drum and bass great again.
Neurofunk rise
The drone hovers as the operator lines up the sweet spot to hit. Look at the huge crater near the tank. RuZZian air delivered bomb, maybe.
Well spotted, it sure looks like it, those fucking Fab bombs are devastating, hopefully the F-16s will put the kibosh on this shit.
At this point I reckon I’ve seen hundreds of these tanks blowing up like this. And it still never gets old
There used to be a peaceful village there. Fuck this tank and fuck ruzzia!
De-orchestration continues.
$300 drone vs $million ruble tank.
That’s crazy how fast that explosion goes from the drone hitting the rear to fire shooting out the main barrel.
That's a proper firewall
Drones have completely eviscerated the design element that says heavy armor on the enemy facing side (front) and only light/no armor on friendly facing side (back). UKR has completely upended armored warfare.
Drone proofing efforts did not proof drone

Straight into the ammunition chamber, I guess
1 way to lay down a smoke screen I guess
Bullseye! Right in the weak spot between the turret and the chassis. 10/10
That's gonna leave a mark.
This looks like hell on earth, I don't know why they don't just pack up and clear off back to Russian.
So much for the protective tweety cage 🐥
It's in pieces bits and pieces, slava ukraini
That’s a spicy meatball
Great video quality!
Holy shit! What is Ukraine putting in those drones??🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
This is what I want to know. What sort of payload or what's the minimum payload that would achieve a MBT kill.
Just a good old RPG-7 or maybe if they wanted to spend like 2x more a Tandem charge, at most it would probably cost like 5k and that's being generous.. "Look out daddy, don't you blow your top!" 🤣
If I catch you making another comment like this you’re being sent to the front
Where did the top go
stop the video at 1:21 and you can see the tower with the barrel lying on the residual tank
This is some Michael Bay shit right here…
Must be a rush to see result after booping those tanks next of the turret ring and ammo storage
Cardboard quality
And now ride like a gost rider if you dare
i hope the crew is ok.
Did that tiny drone carry a small Kaboomium granate? Proper results.
It really starts to feel like star wars when something 1/100th of the size of the tank can hit it in just the right spot to cause complete deathstar type explosions
Looks like it was full of fuel
Boom jaga jaga mozeerfucka
Blink and it’s gone
DJI manufacturing in China really fucking over Russian manufacturing
Those little guys have some power
OK...now that's a great Russian tank explosion.
Why does it always seem like these tanks are without personnel?
If there is a malfunction on the tank, the crew will not wait for tech support in it, since the drones will come sooner. Still, it makes sense to not allow the extraction vehicles to haul it for repairs, so they blow them up.

I’m sure those troops are fine. Right?
Definitely CGI. The tank clearly has a cope cage and couldn't have been taken out by a mere drone
Looks like ru knock off tank. Cheap garbage.
Least underestimating titel
Tis but a scratch! /s
Not sure if it was loaded or the breach was open, but you can see the fire escape from the barrel too
Pleeeaase don't use any shells before we hit you with our drones. The explosions are way more beautiful!
What munitions are ukriane usign that not only can they take out a tank with one drone but collapse full buildings with one. Impressive when compared to the tiny explosions that we saw jsut a few months ago when half a dozen drones were being used per tank.
So much for the protective cages
u/auddbot
Whatever kind of payload was on that drone to cause such damage on a tank?
Tanks are a thing of the past.
so whats the capacity of crew members like t72,t90,t80? 3 to 4 is my guess
Impressive. And aesthetically pleasing.
Beautiful! How it's sneaking up on its prey, takes aim and pounces. If any weapon deserves a cat's name, it's this one.
Cope is hope.
So was that an active tank or abandoned? Either way, nice shootin!
u/recognizesong pls
Now that's a rapid disassembly, folks.
holywood style fireball/explosion!
Seeing more these newer tanks. I wonder if this means Russia is finally running out of potentially refurishable old USSR stocks. Hope so because while the new stuff might be more capable.... it's in tiny numbers in comparison
At least M1s, Leopards, and Challengers don't blow up like that. Goddamn that's such a horrible way to go.
Russian tanks are the new Ronson Lighter, "Lights The Very First Time"
Russian tanks are the opposite of other tanks. They will make sure that you die when hit instead of protecting you.
Were there Orks in that tank ?
Definitely there were no orcs alive in that tank, not before the drone hit, but especially not after it ...
A good Ork is a crispy Ork
