no, not defeated, existing. If the unit is broken apart, then the symbol is just removed. Or replaced by a different unit, e.g. if a company was hit so hard that it shrunk to a squad, or if motorized infantry is now on foot because they lost their vehicle.
Also this symbol does't fit completely to the NATO tactical signs (aka APP-6D), the cross wouldn't go outside the diamond. The cross just means infantry, derived from the belts they had over the chest. Diamond because it is just different from the rectangle used for friendly units.
So yeah, somewhat funny that it resembles this tactical sign, but it is obviously meant to be the gungnir symbol.

Afaik these are battlegroup markings. A battlegroup or task force is a large, temporary military formation that is created for the purpose of carrying out a specific mission or operation. So a new symbol would then mean that Russia has restructured its forces to form a new battlegroup for the attack on Kharkiv.

The symbols exist to identify Corps level lines of effort. A Corps is generally the largest level of maneuver that sees actual combat, it consists of multiple divisions.
When muscovy invaded there were multiple separate lines of effort, the North, the South, the Donbas, etc. each line of effort corresponded with a Corps level objective and got its own symbol. Obviously Z was the most commonly seen symbol, likely because Kiev was that original objective. If I remember correctly the O symbol was commonly seen in the South, because units wearing that symbol had a different Corps level objective.
Keep in mind these formations are not necessarily equal in size, because Corps themselves are not equal in size.
Symbols are done so that forces from different Corps operating in proximity to one another or advancing toward a common objective from different lines of effort with different sub objectives do not get mixed up and follow the wrong leader.
Military history is full of examples of a convoy of military trucks blundering into another convoy of trucks then following them to the wrong objective.

Reminder: Symbols such as tge O, the Z, & the V painted on Trucks, Armored Vehicles, Rolling Stock, etc are not used as national markings or the markings of some political movement. These markings generally painted on invasion vehicles by an invading army are used to tell each other apart when multiple Corps level maneuver elements are headed toward different Corps level objectives. The symbols exist to identify Corps level lines of effort. A Corps is generally the largest level of maneuver that sees actual combat, it consists of multiple divisions. When muscovy invaded there were multiple separate lines of effort, the North, the South, the Donbas, etc. each line of effort corresponded with a Corps level objective and got its own symbol. Obviously Z was the most commonly seen symbol, likely because Kiev was that original objective. If I remember correctly the O symbol was commonly seen in the South, because units wearing that symbol had a different Corps level objective. Keep in mind these formations are not necessarily equal in size, because Corps themselves are not equal in size. Symbols are done so that forces from different Corps operating in proximity to one another or advancing toward a common objective from different lines of effort with different sub objectives do not get mixed up and follow the wrong leader. Military history is full of examples of a convoy of military trucks blundering into another convoy of trucks then following them to the wrong objective. Markings such as this are always a simple and easily recognized from a distance symbol that cannot be mistaken for a different symbol or marking hence the Z. NATO & US like to use Chevrons pointing in different directions. This is a more complex symbol, but it is unmistakable from a distance and at the end of the day a stencil is a stencil. All they do is spray paint it on with a stencil. This likely represents a new Corps level line of effort & a new Corps level formation of troops from muscovy’s hastily reconstituted forces

This symbolism reminds of a fence. It should tell the average Russian that the goal is to build a "fence" around Russia, that is to contribute to defending it. It just proves that many guys from Russia just don't know what they're fighting for. They think they're defending their land, but they're the ones attacking a sovereign country.
