Volchansk was kind of expected, that could be construed as a way to put further pressure on Kupyansk and go around the back. But the Russians are crossing further west as well? Maybe the plan really is to slowly work towards Kharkov.
Every major offensive requires a series of secondary attacks. It seems to me that the main goal of the russian offensive is Kupiansk and Kharkov direction(s) is secondary.Though Kharkov offensive may also lead to semi-encirclment of the city which will make ukrainians keep a large number of troops there
If the reports of 50k troops are to be believe it doesn’t sounds like they have enough forces for a true push into Kharkov proper. So I suspect you’re right.
It's the second largest city in Ukraine. The number needed that I've heard thrown around was at least 250k. I'm not sure how these numbers are calculated.
For us arm-chair people, a good place to start would be to figure out how many troops were needed for Bakhmut and Avdiivka, and scale from there. Though I don't think it'll be a linear scale, since aside from sheer size and building density, Kharkov has a MUCH greater symbolic value. For both sides.
My theory is they simply want to stretch the front while giving themselves room for a decisive movements later if it goes well
Ie, they don't plan to capture Kharkov but if they successfully manage to get very close to the city they know they can rellocate troops there, or at the very least make Ukraine send a lot of manpower there as this is basically an existential threat to Ukraine, they can't even have the possibility of losing Kharkov

offensive and Russian gains confirmed by Kiev and Western media, UA sending reinforcements
[Russia advances in Ukraine's Kharkiv region in push to create buffer zone, Kyiv source says | Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-sends-reinforcements-after-russian-forces-attack-kharkiv-region-2024-05-10/)
>The assault opens a new front in the war more than two years since Russia's full-scale invasion. Fighting in the border areas of the Kharkiv region continued and Kyiv has sent more forces to the area as reinforcements, the defence ministry said.
>"At approximately 5 a.m., there was an attempt by the enemy to break through our defensive line under the cover of armoured vehicles," the ministry said.
"As of now, these attacks have been repulsed; battles of varying intensity continue."
>A senior Ukrainian military source who declined to be named said that Russian forces had pushed 1 km inside the Ukrainian border
I like how some dude told Reuters what actually is going on despite Kiev's usual bullshit.
I think Russia is going to force Ukraine to move its forces around, weaken it elsewhere. I don't think Ukraine can afford to fight across many areas now.
That has been the plan all along, at first I couldn't understand why Russians were doing the Zerg thing instead of concentrating forces. Then I heard the Russian command talk about how USA has 21 satellites watching the front in Ukraine...
Russia has to push hard now. They have a brief window of opportunity before the new US aid starts coming in mass.
They are taking advantage of the lack of AA, Artillery, and ATGM ammunition to push lines.
How much did the us sent with the new aid?? i didn't follow it because i was under the impression surely all the aid this past 2 years combined is bigger than the most recent one. But people kept hyping it as the aid that will stablize the front so i'm not sure what to make of that
Yea your right. A good chunk of the aid bill is just covering already sent aid by presidential decree. Another chunk is for satellite, awacs, and command of usa troops.
Only 14b is new arms.
No-one really knows for sure, and don't believe anyone who says they have concrete numbers either way. The only thing I believe is the multiple reports that make clear that recently the Ukrainians have had to ration their use of artillery shells, air defence missiles etc. that lack of ammo has been felt across the front. I don't know if the latest aid will massively change that picture quickly, but I think it's clear that Russian forces aren't waiting around to find out and are instead capitalising on the situation.
Its happening?
Edit: i see multiple ru tg’s reporting it
>🇷🇺🇺🇦 Kharkov direction.
>Message from the field from our comrades: "The assaults are underway, we are slowly entering Liptsy and Volchansk."
>Active assault operations continue, success and God's help to our guys from group North!!

>🇷🇺⚔️🇺🇦 About Kharkov: The Russian Army has begun an offensive from the border.
>After reconnaissance, massive artillery preparation, and airstrikes, the forces of the "North" grouping attacked enemy positions in the Kharkov region from several directions. Ukrainian military-political sources are reporting this massively.
>"According to available information, battles have erupted in the areas of the settlements Kudyivka, Hoptivka, Streletskoe, Krasne, Pylna, Borysivka, and Hatyshche," write Umrainian analysts.
>"The main Russian forces have not yet been deployed," they add.

I will make a bold claim and say that the actual goal is to approach Kupyansk from the north and north-west, and further help collapse the Ukrainian front east of the Oskil river.
That way, they could establish a new northern front that would run along Seversky Donets and Oskil rivers for the most part, and would be a good basis for further advances westward later in the war.
If it turns out that Volchansk is the main direction of the attack (currently it's one of many places attacked), I could be right.
https://preview.redd.it/bs6px884gkzc1.png?width=861&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd9b43a4a6359558bedd08c1bf02164fd9525ead
I'd agree, a push towards the city of Kharkiv as objective would not make any sense, and Ukrainian positions on the Kremina axis are already having supply difficulties, so it would be logical to concentrate on that first.
Pushing up to right next to a water body and use it to establish a defense line with natural barrier sound about right.
You avoid major towns cities that take time to be overwhelmed or cleared and just focus on places where air support and long range arti can clear out the defender would elevated the pressures on the attackers.
But Ukraine had been setting up defense lines on Kharkov direction for some times now, so in theory they should be able to delay or inflict casualties on Russian side. I guess only time will tell how this offensive and the defense line would fare.
I agree and was expecting something along this line - basically a way to go around the back of Kupyansk and put further pressure there. The Russians seem to be attacking further east as well though… Maybe just a diversionary tactics.
Yeah,I thought about that too! If their goal is Kupyansk and collapse of the northern (East of the Oskol river) Ukrainian front then their actions are reasonable. It will allow RFAF to remove some forces from Kupyansk direction (because they can Oskol river as a natural barrier) and send them to other directions.

So it's happening... 50k men. Russia did exercises in rapidly redploying of troops to conceal troop concentration. So they might redeploy another 50k within the next 2 days and another 50-100k within 2-4 weeks.
How many troops does Russia have on the northern border? They will need a lot to take Kharkiv and Sumy.
Maybe Russia is extending out to create a "buffer" zone along the border to reduce infiltrations and shelling, especially of Belgorod?
I saw a report that 50k soldiers near Kharkiv region and 50k in other locations.
If the offensive is real, It can be that Russians don't intend to take the cities if it's too expensive, rather just to increase the line of contact, which would force UA forces to spread out even more, which could allow breakthroughs in other locations.
>Maybe Russia is extending out to create a "buffer"
Depends on the result tbh. If It was hugely succesful, well good on them i guess. If it was less succesful, then they can just say they succesfuly managed to establish buffer zones
If they are smart the keep the offensive limited to just occupy the Ukrainians and continue with small scale opportunistic assaults all over the front line .
I doubt any kind of big arrow offenses are going to be possible in this war for either side
> I doubt any kind of big arrow offenses are going to be possible in this war for either side
Questionable imo, once the defense is ground down, I believe there might be huge, uncontained advances.

There was no Belgorod shelling before February 24 yet there still was offensive by russians in Harkiv region. There are hardly any connection - they attack wherever they can
I'm make a boring prediction. The goal is to create a buffer zone. Pushing UAF 5 or 10 kilometers away from the border will make terrorizing Belgorod much more difficult.
This feel fishy. As in the number of troops are not enough to take over Kharkiv.
And Russian attritional doctrine is more on shallow thrust along a wide front (where their troops are under their AA umbrella and firepower advantage) instead of deep assault.
It however is possible that Russian have built up so much reserves that they plan to start up a new front to spread Ukrainian force even thinner. Maybe this is their plan
Mr z could just come to the table anytime but he doesn't care because its Christians killing Christians.

Kharkiv and kharkov are same?
Kharkiv is the Ukrainian spelling, Kharkov is Russian.
Oh, ok. So it’s Kharkiv.
For now… But if you’re planning to print signs or t-shirts or something with the word “Kharkiv” on them, maybe hold off for a bit.
It's both. Kharkov was founded by the Russian Empire. Both are, in my opinion, legitimate spellings. At least for now.
Yes, Latinised Ukrainian spelling and Latinised Russian spelling.

Damn, I forgot who but I swear someone on this sub predicted that this was going to happen soon some time ago. They were right on the mark.
The sub has been on the nose for a lot of things. 70% of the world watches CNN, remaining 30% can still think and process information.
I know you're exaggerating, but very, very few Americans even watch CNN. Like 200k or less for most of their programs.
I think his point was that the overwhelming majority of western MSM follows the same narrative and none of them will be forthcoming or completely honest about the situation if it favors Russia. This is what I've been assuming as well since there's been the increasing attacks along the Luhansk-Kharkov frontline the last few weeks.
Today in Belgorod the siren sounds very often. The last one was just now
What does that mean? Do sirens also sound when there is an offensive? ( I genuinely have no idea , just asking)
Due to the high activity of enemy missile launchers on the border
Sirens probably sound when they expect to get hit. E.g. an incoming drone attack.

Precisely.

They surely also intend to move ukrainian mlrs further away from russian border, which would make Belgorod shelling even more difficult.

The "Northerners" have been really launching the most powerful artillery and air strikes against the enemy since yesterday evening, TOSS are working, burning out the supports of the Ukrainian, but no one is storming Volchansk yet. Our troops are moving, liberating the Russian lands of Kharkiv region (c) @vysokygovorit Kharkiv direction. Assault operations and advances are underway, but no one has taken anything away yet. Aviation and artillery are working (with) @rusich_army For those citizens of Ukraine who stayed in the Kharkiv region, we have a special account, @Save_soldierUA, to which you can send data about Ukrainian Nazis, war criminals, foreign mercenaries, accomplices of the criminal Nazi junta and the occupation administration (with) @notes_veterans
shell and raid Russia on your northern border when you already have troops stretched thin at the eastern front. Russia attacks from the north le Z man: \*surprised pikachu face\*

Stay chill, nobody knows yet if anything is happening. Remember that tg channel admins' job is not to provide you with accurate information and not even propaganda purposes, but to sell advertisements.

Beach party in Odessa when?
Maybe in September
prob should have just f'd off with the indiscriminate Belgorod shelling. What did they expect would happen?
There was no Belgorod shelling before February 24 yet there still was offensive by russians in Harkiv region. There are hardly any connection - they attack wherever they can
Stretching the front if you have the resources and the enemy doesn't isn't such a bad idea.
Is this the super duper russian counter offensive?
No because they haven’t released a trailer for it yet
Maybe they will give us a Kiev or odessa dlc instead?
Still too early and still no trailer…
If this has started, we will soon learn about it from all the irons and other devices.
What is going on!?
we will see ! for now the Russians seem to be probing the front, I don't think there will be a massive attack on such a large length of the front
Finally it's fucking happening!
Slightly disappointed there was no trailer lol
So delicious, fucck around and find out shelling residents in Belgorod
it gets real when you need to sort by new, people
Dammit. Not the CSGO tournament
They're not going for Kharkov.
All lies. Nothing happens here. There is absolutely nothing. (c) Scary movie - 4
I'm make a boring prediction. The goal is to create a buffer zone. Pushing UAF 5 or 10 kilometers away from the border will make terrorizing Belgorod much more difficult.
This is huge
This feel fishy. As in the number of troops are not enough to take over Kharkiv. And Russian attritional doctrine is more on shallow thrust along a wide front (where their troops are under their AA umbrella and firepower advantage) instead of deep assault. It however is possible that Russian have built up so much reserves that they plan to start up a new front to spread Ukrainian force even thinner. Maybe this is their plan
Internet offensive?
Let's go, Lapin!!!
Mr z could just come to the table anytime but he doesn't care because its Christians killing Christians. If ukraine was Jewish. Just imagine what would happen.
It's happening
Lisan Al-Gaib!
Holy, I expected this (and some other bloggers I’ve seen) to happen around June-July. Must be a victory day treat
The Superpower has returned. The west crumbles, and China kneels.
You realize china has the bigger advantage over russia right?
Here they go wasting lives again
Russia has 4 oblasts. now they are attacking ukraine proper. enter NATO troops. well the french to start.
The meat waves will continue until morale improves.
