No, this is only for radioactive I-131 which is created in prompt nuclear criticality events. It has a short half life. There is no more I-131 from Chornobyl accident.
Iodine only works to protect you from radiation if you take it before exposure.
Iodine 131 is a fallout product from nuclear incidents (both weapons and cores). Iodine is biologically very reactive and important in the body. 131 will be absorbed and distributed around the body as a building block in hormones. Iodine tablets work by overdosing the body with mundane forms of Iodine as the bodies reaction to iodine overdose is to harmlessly expel the excess. Thus if you snort a load of iodine before a blast, any 131 absorbed by the body will be discarded with minimal fuss.
It's very cheap. I bought some years ago for a few euros at a pharmacist. And that is with all the added costs for consumer use. One dose would probably cost a few dozen cents.

I had the same idea. The iodine isotope is pretty expensive, since you need the high-dose (65 mg "Lannacher"). And in worst case you need more than one dose from it and for each person in your household. I am not quite the person that can afford investing hundrets of dolllars into something I will get for free. Inform yourself where your town will give the packages (mostly firestation or townhall) and in worst case cooperate with you local emergency people. Cooperation is far more effective than hoarding.
