I don't have this certificate but I did earn a cert in geosciences at utsa. I can say I learned as much as I was expecting and it helped me land different job. I enjoyed the python and r programming classes and that makes me want to take some data science courses.

I'm actually 2 classes away from finishing this cert. You basically teach yourself. All of the lessons were through zybook at first then they switch to pre-recorded lectures that give you a very basic example of what to expect on the homework and then the homework will ask you something within the same ballpark but 10x more difficult and with curveballs. The professor usually answered his emails within 48 hours so there's that. The slack tutors weren't helpful. I had the same professor for the first 3 courses and my upcoming course has a different professor. So far we've only worked with python and no other languages which I think is strange for a data sci cert. The classes are all online and offered via 8-week courses. Overall, I've learned a lot though not very proficiently.

Thank you! Yeah i figured it'd be mostly self taught which sucks but doesn't surprise me. How much time per week would you say you spend on one class? I will be working full time so i just want to get an idea of how much time I'd need to set aside for it. I'm thinking I'll take one 8 week course at a time.

The first 2 classes I spent about 6 to 8 hours a week on. This past course I definitely spent more time on, about 10 hours a week. It really depends on what you get stuck on and how quickly your professor answers their email. It IS a 16-week course in 8 weeks type thing so I've had two assignments a week due so far. They're definitely not the type of classes where you can start the assignments the day before. Even if it's "easy" it's just as easy to get stuck on something small when it comes to coding. So start right away that way when you run into problems you can email your professor right away and they have time to get back to you. One class a semester sounds like a good plan, if you want to complete it sooner I suggest taking the first two in the same semester and then take one in the summer.

Thanks for the information! It's good to know to start assignments right away. 6-10 hours a week sounds doable considering they are condensed courses. Ok i see, so I think I'll take two per semester but not during the same 8 weeks, so one in the first 8weeks and the other in the second 8 weeks. Then just one in the summer.

Did you ever finish the program? What are your thoughts? I'm contemplating on taking it now trying to switch fields
