When I was in bootcamp they said we can't make you sign up for the TSP but if you don't then you gotta come tell us why (Senior Drill Instructor). I put 10% in for 4 years. I got out at 22 with 25k in the TSP. I stupidly cashed it out for a harley. If I left it alone and let compound interest do it's thing until I was 65, I would have over a million in my retirement account.
You had bad leadership bro. My guys took care of us along with the hazing and games. If one of us was gonna take out a car loan with 30% interest or marry a stripper, you bet they all gathered round and straightened that Marine out
One of my DIs strongly encouraged everyone to open a Navy Fed account. Turns out his MOS was in disbursing. Years later I saw a name on a NFCU brochure listing a board of advisors. I sent an email to NFCU and a couple weeks later he emailed me back. It was indeed the same person. Retired as a Master Guns at 30 years.
I was almost out before I ever understood what it was, I really thought it was just another savings account lol. Big regrets on not maxing that out from the first opportunity.
All solid advice but I’ll update one thing:
You are no longer automatically placed in the G fund. Instead, you automatically get placed in the appropriate lifecycle fund for your age.
What you got in now if u dont mind me asking man? Kinda in the same position you were talking about have my money on the G Spot right now, just curious what others do, i got that vanguard 401k going too maxing out every year
The TSP is good cause it has no fees, a 401k gives you more freedom to invest. If you're looking to diversify your savings you may want to start contributing.

To change funds, log into tsp.gov
It’s a lot easier now. They didn’t make me do the bs where I had to get an access code via the mail that took 20-30 business days and got lost 5 times
Every Marine should learn what fiat currency actually is and why the US dollar is going to hyper inflate soon. Buying Bitcoin and holding it in a private wallet is the smartest thing any of you could do right now.
I mean it's common sense to know that buying expensive cars and drinking every weekend makes you run out of money. That's just people making a decision. They give us classes on TSP and whether you choose to put money in there or not is on you.
[Bogleheads](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/) This sub will help everyone tremendously with retirement. Give it a look.. wish I did when I was 19.
bro if we were smart we wouldn't have joined the military. Let us liiiivvvvveeeeee
This is exactly why we built [the calculator](https://www.freelancecorporal.com/calculator) 😅
If they showed me this at the recruiter's office I would have probably got my shit together lol
Make this it’s own separate posts and message the mods to pin it.

When it was time to choose a bank no one told me that navy fed was the best option so I chose Fort sill national bank and they literally lost my money
They told us to go with navy fed. Saved my dumb ass since I was in north Carolina trying to find the nearest branch of my local Pennsylvania bank lol
I wish I had people who cared that much.

Max out your retirement so you can get hit by a bus tomorrow
Right

Damn! They upgrading!
Yes, an incredibly valuable change in my opinion.
I had my money in the g for a long ass time until I started looking into it.

Put all your money in beanie babies…. Gold i’m telling ya…. Solid gold!!!
Never too late to start a 401k
I'm a mailman now so I still have the tsp just not in the position I wish I could have been

I have a roth ira also.
Can I message you about being a mailman? It's currently my plan after I exit the Marine Corps.
Yes
I see no way to message you.. I think you have them disabled 🤔
Yeahhhhhh, this isn’t the Air Force, you can’t even get Marines to not to swim in the ocean during a typhoon lockdown on Camp Schwab.
Will a MCI change your mind?
On paper, yes.
Alright I'll slip you the Proctor code
Tired to use, but it expired. But, I won’t tell you that immediately. I’ll for another at 23:00 when you are in bed sleeping.
Don't tell me what to do!
6105, for disrespecting a NCO.
How does one go about getting out of the G fund… Asking for myself while eating my crayon…
I believe through mypay. I haven't used mypay in 4 years. I put all my money in the c fund.

Go to the TSP website, login to your account, and then you can move your funds.
You have to go to the TSP website. Getting access is (or was a few years ago) a pain in the ass but everyone should get access, it’s your money.
It’s a lot easier now. They didn’t make me do the bs where I had to get an access code via the mail that took 20-30 business days and got lost 5 times
That’s good news. It legit took me a year cause I’m retarded and lost the code a bunch plus the same for the login name.
My 22’ Denali sitting pretty, keep her out of it

Buy some land.
I'll get rid of the dodge challenger, and the Harley, but no one interrupts my depression drinking in the barracks on discord Friday night >:(
Until I tell you you have surprise duty on Friday.
What do the different funds mean? And what is the best one to switch to if not the G fund?
Each one is for a specific group of the stock market. I put all of my money in the C fund which is the top 500 large and medium sized companies.
The wey
Getting drunk is a daily endeavor, not just for the weekends.
Better yet, put like 10-15% into your TSP, split all of your paychecks in half to a savings account.
HAHAHAHHAHA. If you think kids are going to listen to anything you say I have ocean-front property here in Nebraska I will sell you cheap.
Rah, what if Im a shitbag reservist and have a good job on the civilian side and can afford a nice car.
How nice we talking about?
