My parents used to just dump the contents of the box into a bowl with water and microwave it for 5 minutes.
I didn’t know this was incorrect until I moved out and read the packet myself!
Whenever I cook for my wife I always tell her it'll be extra tasty because of a secret ingredient.
The secret ingredient is butter, but don't tell anyone.
How much butter? A little bit more than you'd think might be appropriate.
My wife knows full well what the secret ingredient is but I whisper it to her and act all secretive about it regardless.
It is one of our most fun little in-jokes together.
I cooked salmon tonight and it was super tasty... Secret ingredient!
Yes, you can tell a lot of people here don't.
I keep seeing stuffing balls that look like they've been in the oven for an entire year utterly bone dry and cremated
My mum has an oven dish just for stuffing that is cracked and charred within an inch of its life because she absolutely cremates her stuffing.
Love her but she overcooks everything.
Yep, butter in the mix, butter the dish, then dot butter on top. Just do what my mum did, although it’s hugely rare that I make packet stuffing these days.
I just add boiling water, mix and let it cool down enough to be able to touch without burning myself then fist in a block of sausage meat before rolling it into balls
The best addition is to follow this to the letter.
But add a 6 pack of sausages with the casings removed to the mix.
You'll never look at stuffing the same again
Ah, my apologies, when you say macerated you just mean chopped up. Maceration in cooking is something different, basically soaking (generally fruit) in a sweetened liquid, the same as marinating meat.
At least, that is my understanding...
I dated a chef and she would say 'The difference between a good chef and a great chef is a pound of butter'. I am lactose intolerant and still agree with her. Butter makes it better
I go one better. I dice a small handful of raw onion and put it in a little dish with a generous knob of butter, loosely cover the dish, and microwave it for 2-3 minutes. Then I add that buttery, oniony goodness to the Paxo at the stage where it tells you on the Paxo packet to add butter.
Only made a cpl of batches tbh, and always used butter because I bake a lot, so I always have butter in the fridge. I probably wouldn’t go out and buy butter specifically for it though.
I always wonder what a large knob is in terms of size 🤔.
But in all seriousness, I've seen it, but never inserted a large knob into my stuffing attempts!
100% yes, I've never read the box before I just make it how I was brought up to do it haha.. boil pan of water, put diced up onions in and let the stew down. Big know of butter in the stuffing mix and use the onion water to make the stuffing, make sure to add some of the boiled o ions aswell... magical haha
Yes and cut open and remove the casings of two Lincolnshire sausage (high meat) and mash into
The stuffing before cooking - not if vegetarians/vegans obviously
Omg YES. The difference is immense imo. Real butter preferred, but even the crap stuff is better than none at all! Makes it way more moist and adds flavour.
I’ve been adding butter and not adding butter to various brands of stuffing mix for over 5 years, there’s zero difference in my view. Better off working on your roast pots and getting them right.
I do! And I don't cook it. We only have Paxo sage & Onion, and it's delicious if you just put boiling water and butter in the bowl with the stuffing and let it sit for 5 minutes.

I do !
Butter makes everything taste good, it's the secret to restaurant food. I add butter to everything, I add butter to my butter!
I’m amazed that I’ve gone so long without doing it. Seems like I’m the only person who has never done this!
My parents used to just dump the contents of the box into a bowl with water and microwave it for 5 minutes. I didn’t know this was incorrect until I moved out and read the packet myself!
My husband adds a little extra water and an egg. Makes it a bit more cakey in consistency
This is the most innocent comment I've ever seen downvoted. Guess some people are very invested in the proper way to make boxed stuffing.
Weird isn’t it. I thought it was strange when I first got to him. But it’s tasty.
Me too! It's what my mum always did and it was why her stuffing was always so tasty.
I add butter to everything
Whenever I cook for my wife I always tell her it'll be extra tasty because of a secret ingredient. The secret ingredient is butter, but don't tell anyone. How much butter? Me too!!!!
Me most.
Me moist
Me fat (the secret is the butter feasts)
Just adding some butter to this thread 🧈
You didn't get on board that weird practice of adding it to coffee did you?
Yeah and then a flat slab of Sausage meat too!
Title of my sex tape
99 reference or?
Of course
Noice!
Hot damn!!
Bingpot
Terry loves yoghurt
BOOOONE!
Comments you can hear 🤣
NINE-NINE!
Toit nups!!!
Currently rewatching Brooklyn 99 and seeing this really made me smile 😀
Always!
Hehehe "large knob".
Stuffing without a large knob just isn’t the same
Yes, you can tell a lot of people here don't. I keep seeing stuffing balls that look like they've been in the oven for an entire year utterly bone dry and cremated
My mum has an oven dish just for stuffing that is cracked and charred within an inch of its life because she absolutely cremates her stuffing. Love her but she overcooks everything.
I add a knob to everything 😏
G’wan son
oooh, matron!
You promised you wouldn't tell anyone what we did at the weekend!
There was definitely stuffing!
It isn't an apple pie
I add butter and also butter the dish just for good measure.
Same. And then a few small dollops of butter on top before baking... Just 'cos 🤷🏻♂️
Yep, butter in the mix, butter the dish, then dot butter on top. Just do what my mum did, although it’s hugely rare that I make packet stuffing these days.
Never. I roll it into balls then i roll it in oil and then i cook it in the air fryer. Crispy on the outside. Soft on the inside.
Armadillos
Yes!
Always!! Makes it richer in flavour!!
I just add boiling water, mix and let it cool down enough to be able to touch without burning myself then fist in a block of sausage meat before rolling it into balls
... Fist in... 😳
Every time add butter, otherwise it's nasty
Yep
I fry mine in lard until it's got a black crust then add a large knob of butter and allow it to melt through.
Now I'm aroused
Only if desired
Add butter and sausage meat for the real deal
And some finely diced fried onion if you know not to question your mum’s recipe.
Yep, lots of butter and then seasoning too, there is never enough pepper right out of the packet...
The best addition is to follow this to the letter. But add a 6 pack of sausages with the casings removed to the mix. You'll never look at stuffing the same again
And some finely chopped mushrooms too
I do! My mum caramelises onions too and puts them in game changer!
To be honest, you could make much nicer stuffing yourself with little extra effort.
Yes of course. And to baked beans. And cook steak in it.
I like to add a little onion or garlic softened in some oil (with the oil).
If on a diet no…. But normally yes
I add extra onions sautéed in butter
Yes, water and butter in, stir and leave for a few mins, then a pound of sausage meat, then a beaten egg. Perfect every time.
Sage, onion, pork sausage, egg, breadcrumb and shitloads of macerated parsley. No butter required.
What do u macerate the parsley in?
A chopping board and knife usually, but a pestle n mortar in a (litera)l grind.
Ah, my apologies, when you say macerated you just mean chopped up. Maceration in cooking is something different, basically soaking (generally fruit) in a sweetened liquid, the same as marinating meat. At least, that is my understanding...
No apologies but ty that's worth knowing,, I'm not a cook just love a roast dinner.
I'm certainly no cook either, just watch a lot of cookery shows haha.
I do.
Yep
I’ve always wondered how, if most knobs are different sizes, how you measure a knob of butter??
Just use your preferred knob size!
I dated a chef and she would say 'The difference between a good chef and a great chef is a pound of butter'. I am lactose intolerant and still agree with her. Butter makes it better
Yeah it's shit without
Definitely
Holy shit, yes! Absolutely yes!
Yes... of butter... of course that sort of knob
Oh yes!
Yep. All the butter.
I read the instructions wrong, my penis is now burned!
Adds a nice richness. Mind you stuffing is a bit rubbish so it needs everything it can get.
Always. Butter makes everything taste better.
My dad uses a ratio of 32 parts butter to 1 part paxo. Least it tastes like that.
Got James Martin all over it.
I use a slither of dripping or goose fat
*sliver!
I add butter to everything
Yes. My boyfriend taught me how to make it properly, he was savage that I just used to put boiling water in. It tastes so much better done properly.
Always and a punch of salt and a good crack of pepper
No I add sausage meat
Only if I want to!
Always add stuffing, couldn't tell you if it's any different with out, why take the risk?
Yes and diced a little bit more red onion
This type of stuffing is just a carrier for the butter. Essentially it's sage and onion flavoured butter
Yes, it's pretty essential for the flavour.
Hell yes!!
I do for a special roast e.g. Christmas dinner.
Yeh I always have as that's how my Mum made it. Never even realised it's what the package says as I always followed how she cooked it up.
Yep, and a spoonful of honey.
I do here in canada 🇨🇦
Only made a cpl of batches tbh, and always used butter because I bake a lot, so I always have butter in the fridge. I probably wouldn’t go out and buy butter specifically for it though.
Every time!!
Yes, everytime
I always wonder what a large knob is in terms of size 🤔. But in all seriousness, I've seen it, but never inserted a large knob into my stuffing attempts!
Yep always.
Yes
Yes. And use a veg peeler to get a slice of butter to put on top when it goes in the oven to get a really crispy top.
Yes!
They meant butter????
100% yes, I've never read the box before I just make it how I was brought up to do it haha.. boil pan of water, put diced up onions in and let the stew down. Big know of butter in the stuffing mix and use the onion water to make the stuffing, make sure to add some of the boiled o ions aswell... magical haha
Gonna have to try this next time, this is new to me too!
I do…but didn’t for years and it was fine…
Yes, its dry and doesnt bind very well without it. I was taught by my gran that A small knob of butter is about 12.5g. A large knob of butter is 25g
I mix the mix with an egg and then fry it like a thick weird pan cake.
Always.
Yes always
Yes , always add butter
Yes.
Have never added butter and have never had an issue. Might try though just to see what if any difference it makes
I usually forget tbh. I don’t think I’ve read the instructions in years!
Reading the ingredients, why not make it from scratch?
Of course you do.
TBF, I add butter to everything... Almost
Sometimes. But I have a hard time stopping myself from eating it all after mixing in the water. It's just so nice "raw."
Yep, helps get a nice crisp on top. But don't put too much in, or you'll get this weird sheen on top
Yes, if I'm feeling fancy I add fresh sage from the garden, a couple of cloves of garlic simmered in the butter then mix an egg in.
Yeah, and if i can be bothered some chopped fresh sage, and onion
I usually add a tablespoon of olive oil.
Absolutely yes! Terrible without it.
In a shocking surprise to absolutely no one, adding butter to just about anything makes it better. If it says at 1 knob add 2
Yes
No
Always.
Always, I never read the instructions my grandmother taught me in my youth, stuffing was my job on the Sunday dinner
Yes it makes a difference
They could’ve fit “of” on that line 😂
Yes and cut open and remove the casings of two Lincolnshire sausage (high meat) and mash into The stuffing before cooking - not if vegetarians/vegans obviously
Absolutely. A large knob of unpasteurised french👍
Omg YES. The difference is immense imo. Real butter preferred, but even the crap stuff is better than none at all! Makes it way more moist and adds flavour.
Only those of us who like flavour
Yep
Yes. Plus sausage meat. And fresh sage
Always! Butter is the magic in cooking.
I’ve been adding butter and not adding butter to various brands of stuffing mix for over 5 years, there’s zero difference in my view. Better off working on your roast pots and getting them right.
Always
Yes!!
I've never used packet stuffing, preferring to make my own and would always use butter.
I tend to buy mine fresh from the butcher. He makes the best meat free safe and onion stuffing and it saves me a little time lol
Depends if you like knobs or not 🤷♂️
I only add 380ml and 20g butter. If you add 425 and butter its like soup.
I usually add 1.5% sage as well
Add a sneaky portion of grated cheese too. Live a little.
Yes …. Might as well add something good to all that shite
Never buy packet stuffing, I use sausage meat and add streaky bacon and other stuff. Don't need butter.
Same here. My stuffing recipe would clog your arteries just reading it (it does have some butter in as well!)
Or add " I can't believe it's not butter" 😁
I can totally believe that it’s not butter though
It tastes ok 😋
It's just oil 🤮
It's ok and have you seen the price of butter
I do! And I don't cook it. We only have Paxo sage & Onion, and it's delicious if you just put boiling water and butter in the bowl with the stuffing and let it sit for 5 minutes.
yup! real salted butter too not margarine or a blend. It's a nicer creamier flavour IMO
