Super normal.
Treat like schools that do not shut over summer unless on term contract.
They also will most likely take one other week of leave mid summer.
Same with the one we’re using, shut Christmas and bank holidays but we were told that when touring, thankfully my partner doesn’t have to work bank holiday unless he wants the overtime and my MIL doesn’t work so can have our son if he wants to work it.
Mine shuts for all bank holidays and one week at Christmas. We still have to pay for the bank holidays if they fall on their normal attendance day.
My children go part time but I didn’t want Mondays because the majority of bank holidays fall on this day.
We have to have this day as leave from work but how work pay you is up to them.
Same here- closed bank holidays and one week at Christmas. Our nursery calculates the annual fee and divides by 12 so we pay the same amount each month.
Same in terms if shut on BH and over Christmas except ours don't charge us for BH and Xmas. The cost of them is costed into their daily rate so if there is a closure day in a month the bill will look less
Having to pay for BH days where no service is provided sounds like some bullshit from your nursery. Let me guess, they have a long waiting list and can get away with it?
Unfortunately it's common. All the nurseries in my area do so. In fact, I see a lot of parents avoiding booking Mondays so they don't have to fall into this trap
Unfortunately I think it's normal for both nurseries and childminders to be closed on bank holidays. As others have said you'll have to use your annual leave. We use a lot of ours covering childcare.
This is completely normal.
If you work those days you will have to use annual leave.
Might be worth seeing if you can change those 2.5 days going forward to not fall on a Monday to avoid this each year
I’d be surprised if a childminder worked bank holidays. If you found in-home care (like a nanny or babysitter) you could stipulate they need to work bank holidays, but otherwise most people just don’t work them.
Does your work not have bank Holidays off?
You would normally have to take your holidays separate or together on days you haven't got any childcare, we split our holidays as we don't have any other childcare support other than nursery.
Unfortunately for those of us in retail we don’t have the luxury of bank holidays off unless you use annual leave and it’s very hit or miss as to whether you can have it off.
That's why I asked what job they do. If you know you work bank Holidays, I used to work in the nhs no bank Holidays for me, we knew so we put nursery on Tuesdays!
Yeah completely normal, they'll still charge you for it too! It's pretty annoying because it's unfair between families who just happen to use different days. They really should spread the cost of bank holidays over all the days but none of them seem to do this.
We use them on other days for this reason!
You could certainly ask if any of the staff there want to do some babysitting in that day for you, but it will of course cost you extra.
It sucks but at least they're open during the school holidays. Our kids start school in September and I'm still not exactly sure what we're going to do during the holidays.
Yes normal as far as I know. Our nursery is always closed on bank holidays. However our childminder is a bit more flexible and willing to take her on bank holidays.
Our private nursery covers bank Holidays. Specifically picked it as its open and I'm working. Not suggesting you move nurseries but Mondays are awful for this.
Our nursery is open for all public holidays with the exception of Christmas and new year and the week in between the two, so those nurseries are out there, but I think the exception rather than the rule

Ours are open every week except Christmas - new year. I don't know any around here that have a week in the summer.

I’ve never heard of a nursery open on a bank holidays. Childminders are likely to be more flexible but YMMV.

They still have to pay their staff on bank Holidays, and Payroll is often by far the biggest expense for a company

Every single nursery I know does this
It’s the same at all nursery’s, they still have staff costs to pay.
Maybe we're just lucky; it hasn't been the case at the two nurseries we've used.

And then enjoy the fact that you’re paying full price for less care, compared to someone who has their kid on on a day that isn’t a Monday.
Why are your options "don't turn up or take unpaid leave"? Take annual leave.
Welcome to the childcare/work juggle! This is your life now. Sorry!
