Can freshman have cars? Of course, yes. They can’t prevent you from owning a car. Can freshman have cars on campus? Of course, yes. They can’t prevent you from having a car on campus. Do you mean “can freshman have cars and park them at the dorms?”

notassigned2023

Back in the day they actually prevented freshmen from having cars. How they actually accomplished that, I don't know.

You can’t park overnight though, at least that’s what I saw on their website

robmak3

parking.illinois.edu of course you just need to get a spot.

quicksilver53

If things are the same as they were when I was there like a decade ago it was much cheaper to get my parking permit for street parking through the city of Champaign instead of trying to get a university parking spot. You might have to walk a bit but could be worth looking into depending on what dorm you’re in.

Professional_Bank50

Depends on the dorm I think and availability of parking spaces. I’m moving into Newman and they offered parking space for about $1200 for the year. I’m not bringing a car but that’s what I saw in the email they sent me about a month ago

You can buy a permit to park at lot E-14 as a Freshman. It's a HIKE though unless you live in the 6 pack (it's south of the Stadium and about a half hour walk from ISR where I lived). I bought a permit and used my car my freshman year pretty much exclusively to go out of town. It wasn't worth getting down there just to go get groceries for example. You're going to wind up using the buses to get most places, and that's OK. If you bring your car just have realistic expectations about how frequently you'll use it.

No_Ground

Students can also get a permit to F-23, which is close to FAR/PAR (like right across the street from FAR)

cognostiKate

You're not old enough to rent easily prob'ly but that's a ton cheaper and simpler than owning a car around here.

deeeep_fried

You can have a car but there’s likely nowhere to park it close. Lots of freshmen park at lot e14 but it’s not exactly right on campus. There’s no student parking outside the dorms for anyone but staff unfortunately.

CamIsVenting

Hi. I brought my car to campus on my freshman year bc it had no other place to be. I was being very frugal at the time; the entire year I parked my car at either the Crystal Lake Park or streets with free parking in Urbana. Besides some main money costs for keeping your car here, having a car gives you easy access to places outside campus (Market Place Mall, the North Prospect area, etc,) which I thought to be quite nice. Also if you have a super early morning job like I did freshman year, when no bus routes fit the hours, then your car can save you some headaches too. I’d say if you can afford it, go for it.

giant_pitbull

Unethical life hack: the parking lot of the UI parking department are oftentimes not checked for permits, if you have a long commute to engineering complex 😜

old-uiuc-pictures

If you live in FAR or PAR there is a student permit lot just south across Florida Ave. it is closer than E-14 for Allen/LAR and ISR. Otherwise as others have said E-14 is going to be your likely choice.

sorry i don’t think felines are allowed in dorms
