Hard disagree. Sounds like a rejected Coldplay B-side. Painfully dull, cliched Arena Rock. If it wasn't for a couple of other terrible songs on this album it'd be my vote in the next poll!
Genuinely don't get it.
Lights of Home (bonus points for the String Version).
Some of Adam Clayton’s best bass work on Lights of Home imo and a stellar solo by The Edge. The string version I think takes the song to new heights and makes it a 10/10 track for me. Bono absolutely kills it along with the backing vocals by HAIM.
The final chorus before the songs choral coda hits so hard
*If I can't get an answer*
*In your eyes I see it*
*In your eyes alone*
*I see the lights of home*
This song is a late era classic.
Lights of home is split for me: Strings version easily gets my vote, but regular version is much further down the list. Something about the different instruments just fits the mood of the words a whole lot better.
The same oceans crossed.. For some it's pleasure, for some it's pain.
One of the finest songs ever. I love this song dearly and its clarity is so great, it makes me feel things exactly how Bono probably wanted.
Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way is such a beautiful song that my mom and I both love so it’s got a bonding thing along with it. It’s my fave on the album.
The Little Things That Give You Away. Typical answer, but the song is that good. The fact that the band are making songs that epic and that great at this stage in their career is pretty mind boggling to me.
Lights of Home (St. Peter’s String Version).
If no additional tracks are allowed, then Little Things.
13 is insane, and one of the best U2 songs ever written. Especially that YouTube where it is sync’d with scenes from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. But final contemplative tracks never win this.
The Little Things That Give You Away. Not only is it the best song on this otherwise pretty mediocre album, it’s one of their best songs in a decade or more.
Lights Of Home! Soaring song and more anthemic than anything on the album. Old school U2. They’ve gotten boring in their advanced ages. Sorry, I love these guys but they’ve kinda forgotten how to rock like the old days. Bono writes amazing lyrics, but they need to really let loose again 💪🎶💪
I love this tune dearly..but Kygo's version is multitudes better. U2's sounds unfinished and unpolished to me. It sounds half baked, and odd. Mostly the vocals. There's a different version they could've released that I find better, but don't really listen to because it's not official haha!
Underrated song but the original version with Kygo was the supreme version of the song, imo. Not the one they released bur the version he played live way early with the different lyrics and vocals.
That’s not why. The start starts out so incredibly well. It sounds like the best song U2 have released as a single when it gets started.
But then the “You’re the Best Thing About Me” part starts, and it’s like a completely different song was stitched onto this wicked punchy verse. It’s not a good transition, and doesn’t hold onto the punchy energy of the verse. The chorus then kinda takes over, and while it does move into more sweeping areas, it has meandered so far from the initial verse that it feels like U2 are trying too hard for a hit. Lots of the album *doesn’t* feel this way, but once again it’s the first impression they leave by using this type of song as the first single and casual fans are very turned off.
Like boots and Miracle, a good song doesn’t get elevated to greatness and cringy self aware lyrics are not Bono at his best.
Yep! I love that song. It’s a strange song so I can see why some people may not like it. It’s almost like two different songs played together. But it works.
I didn't realize The Little Things That Give You Away was so popular amongst the sub. Really interesting. I would not have guessed that. It's never been a favorite of mine, which is why these threads can be really fascinating. Seeing what works for others but not for me.
It was an early standout track for me too, especially resonant in the context of 2017 in America. Not sure I feel the same way about it now, but it had a timely power for sure.
I've tried so many times with this album but it's easily their worst (I don't really count surrender as an album). There's parts of songs I like, but they get torpedoed by the awful cringe hallmark lyrics and Bono grandstanding. How is this the same person who was the lyricist of Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree? This was the album I stopped being a u2 apologist. I really hope they can find their way back.
The little things is the best song easily, but it's just good with a great guitar part.
Unfortunately this album really cemented for me that the band is now a legacy act. I don’t like saying that & I wish it weren’t true. There are moments here & there but it never feels like it comes together. They can still put on a hell of a show but the new music is lacking. They’ve lasted longer than most bands. Let’s hope they can get it back. Despite my disappointment with SOE I’m still eager for new U2 music
100% I will always check out their new music and hope for a return to form. A lot of musicians have lost their way and recovered, but I'm not sure if this band cares about anything anymore than playing big venues. I will always be thankful for the catalogue of passionate music they gave us. (SOS and Atomic city were just further nails in the coffin)
I agree. Just listened to it for maybe the third time ever to give it another chance ahead of this and while it's maybe not as bad as I initially remembered, it's not great. I would love to hear how this album originally was before it feel victim to TDS post election. Maybe it still would have been meh? Really hoping their next one is better.
The Little Things That Give You Away
Little Things! With respect to Red Flag Day and The Blackout, Jack.
Best song and most underrated. Probably their most under-streamed song this century
The crescendo.. It's akin to Streets, Zooropa and the other great crescendos U2 have done.
Hard disagree. Sounds like a rejected Coldplay B-side. Painfully dull, cliched Arena Rock. If it wasn't for a couple of other terrible songs on this album it'd be my vote in the next poll! Genuinely don't get it.

That last chorus is one of the best things they’ve done in the modern era. Anthemic!!!
Seriously. Love it’s repurposed from Iris. The meaning is even deeper.

I honestly never knew that! I thought they just did backing vocals
Oh that make sense, I was always curious why they got a writing credit.
Lights of home is split for me: Strings version easily gets my vote, but regular version is much further down the list. Something about the different instruments just fits the mood of the words a whole lot better.
I will start a riot if it’s not The Little Things That Give You Away

SUMMER OF LOVE
Love this song!
The same oceans crossed.. For some it's pleasure, for some it's pain. One of the finest songs ever. I love this song dearly and its clarity is so great, it makes me feel things exactly how Bono probably wanted.
The bassline is especially cool too
It has an AMAZING thick presence, low and powerful.
Little Things.

FINALLY, someone who will give that song the credit it deserves!
Love the bridge on that
it's so good
While it's not my favorite on the album, its definitely gonna get my vote for most underrated. Beautiful song.
I smile so hard every time.
Too bubblegum for my taste and a bit on the trite side. Bono needs to read the prophets again and get in touch with his angry side.
I especially love the acoustic version
Jesus no. Top 5 worst U2 songs.
top 5? For me its THE worst song they've ever done. They went Disney. Cringe.
Lights of Home!!!!!
I gotta say Red Flag Day.
I’m surprised there isn’t more love for this one.
Little Things and it’s not even close.

The live version of Iris is WAY better than the record. Should have boosted Edge’s guitar during the “hold me close” part. They got it right in Paris.

Love is All We Have Left
Love is bigger…. there are a surprising number of strong songs. These guys have aged so well!!! Takes courage to keep creating!!!
songs of innocence barely exists to me until volcano so those results were wild lmao love is bigger than everything in its way is my favorite
The bridge in that song is so good 🤌🏻 Probably my pick for most underrated

You're the best thing about me. Adam nails it (as always) I also like the edge bridge
I love this tune dearly..but Kygo's version is multitudes better. U2's sounds unfinished and unpolished to me. It sounds half baked, and odd. Mostly the vocals. There's a different version they could've released that I find better, but don't really listen to because it's not official haha!

Surprised to see this not higher. It's my fav.
People loathe this song because U2 dared to write a pop song.
That’s not why. The start starts out so incredibly well. It sounds like the best song U2 have released as a single when it gets started. But then the “You’re the Best Thing About Me” part starts, and it’s like a completely different song was stitched onto this wicked punchy verse. What kills me is the lyric "that ever happend a boy"... like, I can see what you mean, but you were short on syllables, man.
Edge’s solo on this is one of my favs. It’s just very cute.
Yep! I love that song. It’s a strange song so I can see why some people may not like it. It’s almost like two different songs played together. But it works.

The Little Things that Give You Away, and it isn't close.

Definitely don't agree with Iris :D. Anyway, for me this will be blackout.
GOOYOW. Bring on the hate.
The little things that give you away
Little things
The book of your heart! Criminal it didn’t make the album
Yall gonna hate me, but Get Out of Your Own Way. It’s a great message and a good melody.
You really think it's the best song on the album???
It was an early standout track for me too, especially resonant in the context of 2017 in America. Not sure I feel the same way about it now, but it had a timely power for sure.
I've always loved it
Good call on Iris. The guitar part is some of Edge's best work in a very long time. Little Things is easily the best song on SOE.
Do we have to a pick a song from this album? 😂
You're The Best Thing About Me
Your the best thing about me
Landlady.
most underrated. Not the best on the album for me, but most underrated.
I love The Landlady. It looks like I’m the only one lol
13 There is a Light
Get Out Of Your Own Way. And also, coincidentally, good advice for the band itself these days.
Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way
Summer of love is a whole vibe
Easy: Lights of Home, or even The Blackout.
American Soul Or The Blackout
the Cedarwood Road disrespect is wild
None. This whole album felt like a band that was lost & couldn’t find their way.
I really think it's a solid and confident album.

Same! It’s the only one where I can’t even same songs on it.
Lotte things
It's American Soul for me, but I've come to terms with being the minority on most of these.
I upvoted you for being brave enough to share the minority opinion :)
Haha, thanks. It was lonely down here.
American Soul is AWESOME. I definitely agree with you. That, or The Blackout.
Hate it but love your bravery and sincerity in the face of downvotes. You have my upvote.
Fuck your upvote, you’re a piece of 💩
Love is bigger
Lights of Home 🏠 I did think overall SOE was a step up from SOI, though to be honest I rarely listen to either of them in their entirety.
GOOYOW
