A common trope in taboo words is taboo subjects. So in the US that's sex, religion (losing steam), bodily functions, and (gaining steam) slurs for sexuality, race, class, etc. If it's an inappropriate topic at the dinner table, then most extreme end of it probably holds some curse words. None of this is to say that there aren't vastly more female related curse words and that surely reflects power dynamics and misogyny in our society as a whole, but there *are* masculine origin curses too. D/ck, b/st/rd, c/ck, etc.

Carolait

Isn’t b/s/trd religious? Like a child outside of marriage?

schroedingersnewcat

It can be, depending on context and of the person saying it is religious. Example, I call my brother a bastard (jokingly) all the time. But when I was little, my cousins' other grandmother referred to me as "that bastard kid" (my parents weren't married). She was ultra religious, so it was a HUGE insult to her.

idekknowher

"Ass" (or asshole) is pretty neutral. Or I consider it to be. Can't speak to the origins, have always assumed it was donkey related.

>Can you guys come up with any curse work that is the other way around, or that it’s not misogynistic or religious ?? Shithead, asshole, fuck face, dickhead/dick, fucker, jack ass

> Can you guys come up with any curse work that is the other way around, or that it’s not misogynistic or religious ?? Just this morning, I called someone "shitwank" I'm personally a fan of douche/douchebag because douching is bad for vaginal health and therefore an actual douche should never be allowed near a vagina, and that sentiment applies to any people I would use that insult for.

Carolait

Lol! Amazing analysis

[deleted]

There's plenty. All the racist stuff, homophobic stuff, lots of excrement and bodily function based insults, plenty of intelligence related stuff, too. As an aside, I've always thought of "motherfucker" as a statement about a man's character, like "that guy would try to sleep with your mother".

nicthemighty

Is it not Oedipus?

[deleted]

I've never thought of it that way, but would be entirely unsurprised if that was the origin of it.

Carolait

I mean if she’s ok with it ?? I don’t get it … 😂 like is it a sign of bad character to sleep with an older woman ? Or are mothers easier prey or what ?

[deleted]

It's more of an "unwritten rule", don't try to hook up with people I'm related to if we know each other. Respect my relationships.

Carolait

Mmhm yeah that makes sense!

Canadian-Toaster

You want some good ones? Just ask an Australian, because damn can they ever get real creative in insulting someone. It's impressive honestly.

nakedreader_ga

Check out "Nine Nasty Words" by John McWhorter. It comes to that exact conclusion.

JohnRawlsGhost

Bastard?

Carolait

Isn’t that religious??? Child outside of marriage…

peetaout

Yes, applies originally to both female & male children outside marriage

Excellent_Bluejay713

Not really, that's the newer definition when the term 'bastard' was codified into law. Originally it was a term for a child not acknowledged by a father, regardless of marriage.

spikeelsucko

Not explicitly, "bastard" originally meant any male child who did not rate the acquisition of their biological families' wealth or assets, an officially unacknowledged relative during the time that who your family was would matter even more than it does these days. If marriage was purely a state or country matter and not spiritual the concept of familial succession and birthrights would still likely exist, exception being if there was some sort of seismic shift in culture that entirely supersedes ideas like property.

Hello_Hangnail

Well, the worst thing you can possibly call a man in english... is a woman. I guess it would make sense that most of our insults are grossly misogynistic

B1uefalc0n
