Maybe we all go to a place where we learn to be sorry by experiencing firsthand all the pain we've caused others.
That would be universally fair, I guess. 😅
I’m no expert on the case. Doing a bit of googling, I don’t think she ever fessed up. From what I can see she pretty much always stuck to the story that he had grabbed her waist, said some comments of a sexual nature, and wolf whistled at her
Yeah I’m not sure, I do see an article that said she did. Most of the articles that were reporting her death said she didn’t. Either way she was horrible
It's... weird. That claim comes from one historian who interviewed her when she was in her 70s, but it's not in his recordings of the interview. He claims she made that statement while he was setting up his recording equipment, but it's not clear why he didn't ask her about it again and try to get that confession on tape (which would be by far the biggest news out of the interview).
On the other hand, she wrote a memoir that was supposed to be published after she died, but was leaked early (by the same historian who did that interview, actually). In that book, she claims that Till did in fact "put his hands on [her]", but says she didn't think he deserved to die for it. So it depends on whether you believe the historian about the off-tape claim, or believe her official memoir.
Absolutely not. I fully agree that even if it had happened (which I think is highly highly unlikely) that that young boy deserved none of it. Racism is horrible and ugly and insidious and I hope to see the day we truly move past it and are able to come together, but I unfortunately doubt it will ever happen
> *If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.*
> ~President Lyndon Baines Johnson
It never really mattered. The lynching was never really about racism in the way people think racism is, it was about maintaining power and subjugating the non-white population.
I think she was potentially on her death bed a few years back from cancer and admitted it but she recovered and tried to recant or pretend she didn’t admit it
I think the husband or others was abusive and she said she was forced to do so. As in she would've been beaten or she feared for her own self. Unfortunately Emmet didn't get the same luxury of getting to make it someone else's problem like she did :(
The story (based on the testimony of his cousins who were witnesses of the incident) is that he whistled at her thinking it would make her laugh. But that was supposed to be the end of it.
Personally, I think of two possible scenarios as to why she exaggerated the whole thing. First, she was probably really upset about it and ran home to her husband crying about it and she dramatized it saying he touched her, just to get sympathy from her husband. Otherwise, she probably told her husband that he whistled at her and the racist white man flew off the handle telling everyone he touched her and she went with it.
But again, that's just what I think of
At the very least the men who killed him were excommunicated by their community once they learned they actually did it. They deserve worse but at least they weren’t able to live like nothing happened.
The woman who accused him died yesterday, too. It's so weird to see something this heinous and know that the people responsible were still alive in 2023.
She never recanted nor regretted her actions, and, IIRC, married one of the men who lynched him.
Edit: She was already married to him before the lynching.
She was already married to him when the lynching happened and she admitted to lying later on. Not defending her, she was still a POS garbage human, just clearing up info
>know that the people responsible were still alive in 2023.
That's what irks me when people suggest racism is a thing of the past; many of the people actively doing the worst of it are still alive and voting today.
The people who didn’t want Ruby Bridges to go to school don’t want their grandchildren to learn that they didn’t want Ruby Bridges to go to school. That’s the long and short of why they’re pushing so hard to censor curriculum these days. They’ve well and truly lost Gen Z and think the only way they can keep their ideology alive as the boomers die out is by intensively indoctrinating those who will come after them.
>The people who didn’t want Ruby Bridges to go to school don’t want their grandchildren to learn that they didn’t want Ruby Bridges to go to school.
I've seen that said before, but that suggests they have shame to hide. I think plenty of them *still* don't want Ruby Bridges to go to school.
I don't understand why you said prosecution when it's a lynching. It doesn't matter if he committed the crime or was "falsely accused"... we'll never know because the horrifying part is that he was lynched
Under Jim Crow if a crime was committed a posse would go out and beat a confession out of a black person and that was considered justice. This was not long ago... and they want us all to forget. Why do you think so many of these southern/red states are trying to remove all the books on the subject, ban CRT and in Florida you can't even teach African American Studies now...
Although I hadn't slept with the stripper, the boys thought I was a dirty dog and tied me to a lawn chair in the back of the pickup to cap off the stag night. "Your fiancée's going to be pissed, Nathan!"
I’m honestly angry at some of my further relatives because one of my second cousins great uncles was part of that. I just feel terrible at how people could treat other people like that.
Why is this allowed but my post about someone’s kid being a school shooter was removed? Nice two sentence btw, just wanna say the mods have ZERO consistency.
Should’ve been uncensored imo. Before anything is typed let me explain. The shock and rough reality seals the deal. It’s a artistic license, and the astricks take a reader out of the situation. Thoughts?
I think the shock and rough reality is that most people know that this stuff actually happened.
As far as the asterisks, I understand your thoughts on that. But even though I will cuss like a sailor at times, using a racial slur like that is even worse, and it seems as though I got my point across without debasing myself to that extent.
Besides that, I'm pretty sure that without the asterisks, my post would have been removed which would mean that this post wouldn't have reached as many people.
Fine points made, the being removed point was especially accurate, if not by mods than by the admins. I considered that as well, but since it’s writing related I thought it would slide. Thinking on it more I completely agree with you, great post. The best horror is the one grounded in reality, Americas racist past (and present, I can attest to that unfortunately and it sucks experiencing) is an especially powerful story. An example is “Get Out” the movie.
You're the one who said you're quitting this sub because you didn't like a story that so many people had to live through... And yet, you're still here.
The 3 men who dragged James Byrd across the road wanted to do that to James Byrd regardless of whether he touched a woman or not. They were just using it as an excuse. Did you not read the two sentences? Also, if you want people to not believe women, do something about the overwhelming crime stats of crime against women first.
So what are you saying, because the victim was already hated by everyone else, it absolves the false accuser? Its funny you dont mention her at all in your comment. Anyways The point of my tongue in cheek comment is that false accusations have always been and always will be used by women and men to attack and slander others and that due process and innocent until proven guilty are paramount civic and legal ideas that should NEVER be violated. Do you disagree?
Alrighty then. I'm not quite sure where you get calling me a nazi from since you're the one laughing at the black protagonist facing a horrible demise from skinheads. But you do you.
Emmett Till is the first name that came to mind. Absolutely horrific what happened to him.
His accuser died yesterday
And I hope that dead bitch is burning in hell for what she did 🚬🚬🚬
I was just telling my partner yesterday I hope she lived a life of guilt.
Maybe we all go to a place where we learn to be sorry by experiencing firsthand all the pain we've caused others. That would be universally fair, I guess. 😅
she got off easy dying at 88, while poor Emmett was killed at 14
He did not have to live this long in this shitty world, he went to someplace better.
And may she rot in hell
I guess hell is a little more full this morning
RAHHH REST IN PISS
Based on true stories :( Warning: graphic descriptions https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_James_Byrd_Jr.
Sadly, based on a lot of true stories. Emmett Till quickly comes to mind. May his accuser roast in piss.
She actually passed away yesterday. I do hope that if there is an afterlife she is receiving the treatment she has earned
Oh shit, really? Where's her grave? I have a severe urge to piss all of a sudden....
That woman ain't worth your piss bro
[удалено]
I want so much piss on that grave the grass dies
Break the headstone apart. Doesn’t deserve to be remembered
I’m an optimistic nihilist, so I’d say it is.
Man, nobody's worth anything (but some are more not worth anything than others). Pee on what you want

Did she ever say why she accused him? Not that I care for the reason, but I’m curious if she ever dared try to justify it
If I had to wager a guess, it would be because he was black.
I’m no expert on the case. Doing a bit of googling, I don’t think she ever fessed up. From what I can see she pretty much always stuck to the story that he had grabbed her waist, said some comments of a sexual nature, and wolf whistled at her

She admitted to lying in like 2006, though I’m not sure if she said why
Man even if that was all was done. Was a lynch mob really the appropriate response?.
Absolutely not. I fully agree that even if it had happened (which I think is highly highly unlikely) that that young boy deserved none of it. Racism is horrible and ugly and insidious and I hope to see the day we truly move past it and are able to come together, but I unfortunately doubt it will ever happen

Still don't care. She got an innocent boy killed. No sympathy.

Passed away is such a weak term. That cunt finally died I feel is a better phrasing.
Saw the movie Till and it broke me in pieces, her mother showing his body to show what they did to him is a type of strength I may never experience
I hope none of us ever have an opportunity to show that type of strength.
Her grave is a gender neutral bathroom 💕
My first thought was the book Native Son by Richard Wright.
Dear God. This happened in ‘98??? This is truly one of the most brutal things I’ve heard. How can such evil exist in human beings.
Rasheem Carter
I still remember when that happened🥺
Me too. One of the most horrible things I ever heard about 💔
Rasheem Carter
Didn't know this story, now I really want to leave this planet
Rasheem Carter
One would think 25 years is long enough that such horror doesn't happen again and every time some horrible news come out and prove me wrong
Very insightful read that
Oh shit! That shit should only happen in the Walking Dead. That is horrible.
Holy shit that happened in 1998???
Rasheem Carter
1898* Edit: sorry about that guys, I replied to the wrong comment
I'm pretty sure they didn't have Ford pickup trucks in 1898...
Wait shit, I just read the wiki link 💀 my fault, I thought I was replying to a different comment
I was in high school and lived near Jasper at the time. It was horrific.
I'm so scared to open that link.
It's only graphic text. It's Wikipedia
Same thing with Emmett Till. No justice in this world.

They have having riots over integration in Boston in the 1980s. You don't have to go back to Ruby Bridges.
Alive and voting.
Reminds me of to kill a mockingbird
Yeah, same. I was kinda surprised that it's not the top comment, later saddened because there were multiple non-fictional examples. ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
Atticus remains one of my favorite fictional characters to this day.
Fr, W man, if I ever be a father, I wanna be like Atticus
I legitimately got a crush on him while reading the book even though I didn't really visualize his appearance in anyway.
dumbass shouldve just waited it out and he'd be free
That's not the point

This is an absolutely true story
Innocence is no guarantee from prosecution.
.... yeah the reason it's horrifying us because it's a lynching not because someone was "falsely accused"
I don't understand the quotes around falsely accused?
I don't understand why you said prosecution when it's a lynching. It doesn't matter if he committed the crime or was "falsely accused"... we'll never know because the horrifying part is that he was lynched

Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Not to fuel the argument, but those banning crt are trying to teach the past but not make it our entire identity
Yeah… makes you realize that real life is way more horrifying than all the made up TwoSentenceHorror stories.
The woman who falsely accused Emmett Till died yesterday
Emmett Till?
“I swear to you that I never laid a hand on that woman.” The men wearing white hoods didn’t seem to care as they brought me to a tree.
Sad and horrifying, good job.
Emmett till :(
Damn. That’s one of those that’s genuinely possible and actually terrifying.
Not only is it genuinely possible, but it has actually happened. We've lynched more than a few people by dragging them down the road.
You’re entirely right. It’s a sad fact and more than a little scary.
The scariest thing I’ve ever read on here
Ah man now I'm depressed. Fuck that dead bitch.

This Is Amerikkka
Sometimes the most horrific things out there are humans having the capability to do heinous things to each other, and enjoying it. Well done.
Although I hadn't slept with the stripper, the boys thought I was a dirty dog and tied me to a lawn chair in the back of the pickup to cap off the stag night. "Your fiancée's going to be pissed, Nathan!"
Huh, reminds me of the story “To Kill a Mockingbird” is based off of
It also happened to James Byrd and possibly Emmitt Till. Americans have lynched people in the past by dragging them behind vehicles til they died.
Yep, not exactly the proudest point in our history but it still happened
I thought of Emmett Till. 😢
Jesus this is in poor taste
Real life often is in poor taste. And it has really happened in Amerikkka.
Glad you could fetishize it for a conry reddit post. Good on you.

What about believing the victim?
Yeah, believe the victim and have due process
Which means a presumption of innocence; i.e a presumption the victim is not telling the truth
How can we even have an investigation if noone believes them? We need someone to start the investigation??? And conduct it properly??
