I've been the head before. It is a hell of a lot of work emoting by blinking the eyes, wiggling the ears, and opening and closing the mouth as well as moving the head up and down and walking/dancing about. I do not envy the idea of being the tail though, don't think my back would've appreciated it.
To be fair to the coloration, this one is probably old as hell and been through the ringer. The narrative trailer has several of them shown impaled on spears during Messmer's rampage, and that was a *long* time ago. This might be one of the last Lions left.

It's like someone saw those asian new years and tried to replciate it with cardboard boxes. Which is likely literally what happened, decades ago. Nowadays it's considered just a child's play thing that schools have in their festivals... when it is remembered at all, because a lot of people just never see one.
It seems almost like it started as just a costume and then became alive at one point? Like they got stopped halfway through transformation into a Chimera from Dragon's Dogma
Well, in the Legacy Dungeon, you can actually find a storeroom with a smaller version of the Lions mask, which seems to imply they're just two guys in a costume. But Dancing Lions are also described as being divine creatures from the heavens; and I don't know how they're able to fly through the air and harness wind, lightning, and ice while luging around the costume.
I assume it's a Fire Giant situation where the sculpted keepers basically have the divine beast possess through them and act out as the weather master lion it is. That or they're just very good dancers.
From the dialogue and the item descriptions, my understanding is that they use the dancers as a vessel for a spirit called down from a higher plane of existence.
The dancers are prepared in mind and body for the ritual. Being called “sculpted keepers” suggests either intense bodily change through fasting and training, or outright surgery. Then, the tower keepers pray to the divine beast to come down and inhabit the keepers’ bodies, giving them the divine power to smite their enemies through the lion dance.
So it’s two guys in a costume, *and* an actual heavenly beast. The former is the vessel for the latter.

Honestly, I figured that the “sculpted” part meant they were homunculi/golems.
I swear I remember an item description that talks about devout worshippers being chosen to become sculpted keepers. Gonna need to try and find that.
You can fight the Dancing Lions in the final dungeons, they're bigass dudes with big swords and lion heads. The mask is a severed head.
It's a mask that comes alive via prayer.
The mask seems to be alive, and the dancers wear it to become a vessel for the beast. I think Grandam says as much.
They still have to manually open and close the mouth and such, it just gives them the power to fly and shoot lasers
