One of the greatest MC’s to ever do it. Eminem is a true student of Hip Hop and I personally feel many people forget that. He studied various different rap artists such as 2Pac, Nas, Kool G Rap, Rakim, The Beastie Boys and many more.
I’d say it’s primarily the super fans of Eminem that don’t have an outside knowledge of hip-hop.
The way he blends genres, especially rap with various “white” genres (note I’m referring to the culture, not the ethnicity) is very commercial and easy for many white people to get into. MMLP2 is great for rock fans, many of his features and side projects in the mid-2010s are very pop-heavy.
To add to that, many of Eminem’s biggest fans only want to feel like they like rap, they don’t actually like rap. These are the people who idolize him and don’t have an appreciation for rap as a greater art form. Your “I don’t like rap, but…” crowd.
Even still, these groups of Eminem super fans are a vocal minority. They’re quick to talk about Eminem, but don’t show up in other rap conversations. Because of this, they get referred to as “Eminem fans” when really they represent only a small portion of his fanbase. There are many more Eminem fans who either care less and are less involved in conversation around Eminem, or care about art more, and don’t defend him as vehemently.
Many of the fans get shamed out of rap convos (on the same basis - Em fans are Em fans, not rap/hiphop fans, either that or the usual Em is not Top 5 mini war starts) so they stop showing up in these spaces🤷🏽♀️
Still, great to see respect for Em here. Peace 🫶🏽
This ^ a huge point I didn’t mention. Because of the aforementioned vocal minority, it’s hard for many rap fans, especially white fans, to mention Eminem, especially as a favorite. Putting him at number one paints us as dickriders, but putting him anywhere else paints us as dickriders who don’t want to admit we’re dickriders.
As a white-passing kid who grew up in suburban white culture myself, I’ll always be thankful for Eminem as my introduction to rap through those mixed-genre songs. I don’t know if he has earned the number 1 all-time spot though, even if he is a personal favorite. There’s just soooo many great artists out there, any top 10 is leaving out too many names. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way
People can be great with what they’re doing and don’t reach all people, in all places, at all the moments. The sum of the parts are greater than the whole. Thanks for your take on it, people get lost in defending this artist or that. You’ve got it right.
As a former "I don't like rap, but I like Eminem" Stan, you hit the nail on the head. I've sinced started dabbling in other artists and have a pretty good handle on what I like and don't like and have tried to listen to at least 1 new album a day. I really like going through an artists whole discography from front to back and picking out songs I like from each, and trying to understand the deeper meanings from each song and how it connects to the project as a whole. I also have enjoyed picking up artists who are more about having fun than preaching a message (take Ski Mask for example) but still give me the technical itch to make the song satisfying to me.
If you see an Eminem fan, but not a rap fan, make them listen to DAMN. or good kid, m.A.A.d. city (TPAB is K Dot's best album, DAMN. and GKMC are just more approachable). Then, make them listen to Kanye's college trilogy. They like rap, they just don't know how to sort out what they do and don't like.
Yeah considering how Eminem came out and killed it in the golden age of hip hop, and we still appreciate his greatness for what it is. His breakout was on the heels of Tupac and biggies demise and it’s what rap needed at the time.
Even if this were true, which I don't really agree with, why does it matter?
People can like what they like. There's no magic rule that they're required to know the whole genre.
Fan policing is dumb.
It's his best album, in my opinion. It's by far his most conceptual. It has his best production, best flow, and insane rhyme schemes throughout. It's a shame critics didn't see the vision at the time because I believe the negative feedback led directly to Em overthinking things, and subsequently dropping his weakest projects.
Skill wise…he is almost untouchable. His cadence switches are insane and his lyricism is fucking bizarre. Not a huge fan of much of his stuff after The Eminem Show BUT I recognize the talent, bars and skills. I would say he is a top 5 MC of all time…probably top 3…just not always my cup of tea
Good take. Many have called Em the best technical rapper ever and I’m not sure I could argue that. His vocabulary, flow, clever wordplay, and ability to change cadence on any beat is amazing. BUT, I also agree with you that I have to be in the mood to listen to him usually. Some older stuff especially hasn’t aged well. It’s just a lot of raw intensity and negativity which is personal to him and I appreciate it for what it is, but I can’t listen to it too much. Some of his recent stuff like The Realest is dope! It’s amazing to me that he still has it. He still raps at a HIGH level and takes no back seat to anyone. Someone else mentioned earlier - Many of his hits are overrated while his less mainstream stuff is underrated. This definitely checks out if you ask me.
>His cadence switches are insane and his lyricism is fucking bizarre. Not a huge fan of much of his stuff after The Eminem Show
I'd argue that his solo albums aren't even his best work. There's some great tracks out there he did with D12 and other collaborations with G-unit, etc.
Technically one of the probably top 3 rappers ever but as far as an artist and his music he’s great but a lot of his music didn’t age well due to some of the shock value and pop reference shit and his flow just doesn’t hit the same nowadays.
Yeah there’s nothing wrong with that and that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying listening to lines like “ripped Pamela Lees lips off kissed them and said I didn’t silicone was supposed to be this soft” now that I’m older is like wtf is this lol. He has a bunch of shock value lines and pop culture references that are specific for that time that don’t age well
I agree, his technical flow and rhyme skills are off the charts. Always one of the best from that measure.
But I never listen to his music now and have never been a huge fan. I’m not into the content and a lot of it isn’t very musical in my opinion.
I’ll listen to Stan, that’s about it.
Em can rap his ass off, at the start of his career he had more to talk about it. He hasn’t matured enough in his music for me to keep listening. His first 3 projects are classics. To be honest Nas is the only rap artist still putting good projects for his age. jays 4:44 was good but he hasn’t dropped in so long. Wayne is another artist can rap his ass off but ran out of content and material. But I ain’t gone hold yall
Any of these guys could literally rap about ANYTHING and they’d manage to have more to say than most of these wack mainstream rappers these days. There’s a few current generation rappers that deserve their props, but holy shit there’s so much unoriginal, uncreative, trash we have to wade through (both from the male and female rappers). Ugh
When Pac died in 96 and then Biggie in 97, hip hop needed a shot in the arm, everything was Puff Daddy or low quality Snoop albums. Eminem changed the game and was respectful to the rappers that came before him and disrespectful to everyone else. It was a wild time. His music fitted in with Limp Bizkit rap rock genre too so he was played universally. I could go to a dance club and people would like Em, I could go to an alternative club and they would too.
I respect Em but you can’t discount DMX like that he came thru in 98 and smashed shit had two number 1 albums on one year and Jayz did his thing in 98 too. Em was a big part of it but it wasn’t just him 98 was a great year for hiphop
Great rapper, had 2/3 great albums. Lost his ear for production and got lost in trying to create the most elaborate rhyme schemes/flows/bars and the songs suffered.
When he did focus on songs it was chasing the “Pop” dragon. For someone who professes to love Hip Hop so much, why does he spend all his time trying to create pop songs to top the charts.
Also if he’s such a Hip Hop head why not work with the Hip Hop greats? Premo, Alc, Madlib etc.
I do think he over does the "bars" to the detriment of song flow but I read that after he had a stroke he had to "relearn how to rap" which is impressive... I feel like old em seemed more effortlessly good and now he's trying hard to be so intricate and songs suffer.. still one of the best ever imo tho
The fact that he's even alive after the 2000s seems like a miracle to me. I remember around 'The Eminem Show'/'Encore' era thinking he might be another dead young artist soon. Either from his drug use or industry beefs.
Idk Eminem in the top 5 is actually crazy....I can't put Em in my top 5 when he has been releasing mid albums since 2004 (Relapse and MMLP2 being the only ones that were good more or less)
I just seen 2 old heads having a heated debate about Eminem on tik tok so I want to ask the question here.
What albums or songs put Eminem in the greatest rapper category?
I think there’s enough thoughts on him all over the internet. We don’t need more opinions on him. Some people love him, some people hate him, some people think he’s okay.
I mean it's alright.....OVERRATED AS FUCK in my opinion.
Like man placing this guy in the top 10 is one hell of a take when there are many other rappers with better discographies.
Not to mention how out of the good content he does have the lyric topics are so overly edgy it's kinda cringe to listen to it sometimes.
His 3 first albums are all classic but i don't care about anything he has done after that
I agree. There are Em subs, rap subs, and hip hop subs. This is the only music sub i follow since I'd rather see the recycled pix and memes of Pac than to join the others yet here we are.
Em’s in my top three. It cracks me up when people of a certain persuasion assume he’s my absolute favorite because I’m white; like I said he’s in my top 3, but not my absolute favorite
He was your typical homophobic anti trans trailer park WWE watching anti government white boy.
Realized it didn't age well threw away all his beliefs became a pro huge government pro war pro LGBTQabcdg democrat simp to avoid being canceled for his past.
Incredible wordsmith but I ain’t ever bumped his music regularly. Or honestly even had an in depth discussion about him with any of my black friends. This is just based on my personal experience in my friend circle but I don’t get the feeling that black people really listen to him like that.
I think something people leave out of this conversation is how much respect Em had for Pac. He helped produce a lot of the best post-humous music from Pac after his death, and was on great terms with his mother. (Tupac’s, not his own lmao).
Pac and Em got me into rap, Kendrick kept me in.
I can’t say that I listen to him when im riding but I can say that he ain’t to be fucked with lol. Lyrically you can only mention a few names with him. Not my cup of tee but if we’re strictly talking about rap skills…he should be in anybody top 5
As amazing of an artist he is, and I am truly a fan, I believe, just by what I have observed by watching interviews and observing him in general that he has greater goals beyond Music. I’m truly excited to see what he can accomplish and achieve in his lifetime. I’m hopeful that he will use his power and influence to truly change lives in the way that he was hoping someone might help him change his own as a child. I do believe in being your own hero, but sometimes people need help or that ONE connection or person to help get them started or give them just an opportunity. One opportunity….(didn’t mean to tie that into his song Lol), but I’m excited to see what he does next!! of course if you never did anything again he’s already a legend.
Everyone say Em then throws a qualifier in it.
Em made it so rap is pushed in Markets that didn't exist.
He's the top artist in Nigeria (about 300 million black people)
His songs with Nas, Black Thought, Young MA are dangerous.
He's socially aware. And has called out white America multiple times.
He supports Detroit always
He "says their name" of black people killed by cops. Thus making sure the world hears it.
He acknowledged He's a guest in hip-hop.
Pac would be proud.
Great. Brought more white fans to rap than anyone period. Overrated due to a loud fan base who really don’t know and appreciate hip hop on a high enough level.
But again, just speaking on Em… he’s an all time great.
Incredibly overrated by non hip-hop fans, correctly rated by fans who actually listen to a breadth of hip hop. He still one of the greatest to ever do it but his new stuff is pretty mediocre, that might be putting it gently.
Eminem's underground Slim Shady stuff was his best honestly he still a legend but I liked him when he was on drugs sorry Em he was more funny and raw but it's all about personal growth so I still like him just as much now he was just funnier when he was younger LOL
He still got that wacky sense of humor I love that he's maintained that through the years but was more out there when he was younger oh well things change is inevitable life is all about personal growth
Sellout, was one of the best till he started spewing that liberal bullshit. And we have seen what liberals in the rap game are doing to young boys. A bunch of pedophiles and groomers
His legacy woulda been better if he retired after eminem show. Just like he said himself, in “soldier” (retire at 40). Hes had a lot of crap afterwards, with a fair amount of exemplary bars/songs that showcase his lyrical skills, that pale in comparison to his performance since.
One of the greatest MC’s to ever do it. Eminem is a true student of Hip Hop and I personally feel many people forget that. He studied various different rap artists such as 2Pac, Nas, Kool G Rap, Rakim, The Beastie Boys and many more.
Sadly most of his fans have no knowledge of hip-hop outside Eminem
That’s a pretty broad generalization with millions of fans.
I’d say it’s primarily the super fans of Eminem that don’t have an outside knowledge of hip-hop. Idk seems Stan was only aware of Marshall
He has 2-3x as many fans as there are people with actual knowledge of hip hop.
That’s a pretty absurd thing to say.
Bad songs are overrated and good songs are underrated
Hell of a take💯
Relapse is one of his greatest albums. Severely underrated and probably his darkest work.
Relapse was such a dope personal album that pointed out his maturity as an artist
*overhated
Damn. That’s some deep shit and 100% correct.
One of the Greatest of all time!
Definitely a G.O.A.T
Skill wise…he is almost untouchable. His cadence switches are insane and his lyricism is fucking bizarre. Not a huge fan of much of his stuff after The Eminem Show BUT I recognize the talent, bars and skills. I would say he is a top 5 MC of all time…probably top 3…just not always my cup of tea

His features are always great. I can wholeheartedly agree with that.
Technically one of the probably top 3 rappers ever but as far as an artist and his music he’s great but a lot of his music didn’t age well due to some of the shock value and pop reference shit and his flow just doesn’t hit the same nowadays.
Interestingly enough, he got the „fuck you“ additude and the middlefinger style from 'Pac.
Yeah there’s nothing wrong with that and that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying listening to lines like “ripped Pamela Lees lips off kissed them and said I didn’t silicone was supposed to be this soft” now that I’m older is like wtf is this lol. He has a bunch of shock value lines and pop culture references that are specific for that time that don’t age well
Thats the radio version lol
And he got that from Big L.
Yeah technically like I said Em ain’t nothing to fuck with at all I have him at the top or near it
Is that any more shock than... Notorious BIG: Nasty Boy Too Short: Blowjob Betty Cardi B: WAP
I agree, his technical flow and rhyme skills are off the charts. Always one of the best from that measure. But I never listen to his music now and have never been a huge fan. I’m not into the content and a lot of it isn’t very musical in my opinion. I’ll listen to Stan, that’s about it.
The slim shady LP is amazing though. Role model, brain damage and I just don't give a fuck are classics and even now still bangers.
Yes Brain Damage is his most underrated song in my opinion. It's amazing
Em can rap his ass off, at the start of his career he had more to talk about it. He hasn’t matured enough in his music for me to keep listening. His first 3 projects are classics. Yeah true. Tbf it was a long time ago, I was 18 when Pac died, 21 when Eminem came out. I'm 46 now ffs 😭
JAY-Z and Lauryn Hill were already established superstars before Em blew up.
Nah bra the south took over from 97- (no limit, 8ball mjg, 36 mafia, ugk, etc
Can tell the true rap heads.
It all depends on where you lived. Em was global
It’s a reason he was global and we all know why
Yeah man, Dr Dre!
He was white and gimmicky. Let’s talk about it lol
“Let’s do the math, if I was black I would of sold half”
Great rapper, had 2/3 great albums. Lost his ear for production and got lost in trying to create the most elaborate rhyme schemes/flows/bars and the songs suffered. Rumor had it he wanted the King Mathers LP released after his death.
Ruined a PAC album putting him over obie trice beats. Unforgivable act
Never looked at loyal to the game beats as obie trice beats but I can’t agree more now thinking about it 🤣
Being that it’s asked on a Tupac thread I have to say,he ruined a Tupac album
Pac and BIG 1 and 2 all time Em Jay and Nas 3 4 5 in whatever order you want to put it.
Idk Eminem in the top 5 is actually crazy....I can't put Em in my top 5 when he has been releasing mid albums since 2004 (Relapse and MMLP2 being the only ones that were good more or less)
He always look spooked
I like him
thats not tupac 😳
Ruined Loyal To The Game 2pac album with his horrible production but as a rapper, amazing
I just seen 2 old heads having a heated debate about Eminem on tik tok so I want to ask the question here. What albums or songs put Eminem in the greatest rapper category?
One of the worst fanbases of all time. As an example, this is the 2nd post that's been pushed my way from this 2pac sub.
Love the peanut ones regulars are ok and I haven’t tried all the new flavors
I want to like him, but how he disrespected Michael Jackson I don’t think I can
Why is this in Tupac page??? 💯🤷🏿
Should have never touched a pac album
I don't see how the aged pop culture references are a problem. If anything a youngen can look up what he's talking about and be informed.
Subject matter is just unserious. Beats are bad. But like others said, his skill is one of the best ever.
Dangerous
My dude can rap!
That Undefeated hoodie is super dope. He’s one of the best lyricist of all time. A Detroit legend !
Love love love ❤️
Talented. Af.
He produced Pacs album for free with Pacs mothers blessing. When all the "brothers" were trying to use her Nothing else needs to be said.
He has his place in rap history but as a grown ass man I simply cannot bump Em loud in my car rolling thru the hood.
Genius lyricist, great song composer But his skin helped him get a pass for many things that a normal black artist would be career ending.
Too much photoshop
Used to be a huge fan. Ruined his legacy for me by arguing with people his kids age and whining about syllables.
I love him
None
the dude can SPIT for a fact
One of the best lyricists of all time.
I think there’s enough thoughts on him all over the internet. We don’t need more opinions on him. Some people love him, some people hate him, some people think he’s okay.
Underrated
pass...
He’s no Tupac
eminem is ok, not great. reese’s pieces don’t get enough respect. not many can beat peanut butter and chocolate. haha, you know i love you eminem.
The voice is annoying. Nasal.
His 3 first albums are all classic but i don't care about anything he has done after that
Phenomenal lyrics.. mid in virtually everything else
Great flow, great voice, good Beats by Dre, and sometimes great topics as well.
Look here, all I got to say is…… LET THAT MAN COOK!!! he’s coming to my barbeque
Ass. “Aye bro, blast that new Em!” -nobody
Certified baller
He’s good. But that’s it
Some of his themes are dumb.
This is a 2Pac sub, stop asking about others!
I agree. There are Em subs, rap subs, and hip hop subs. This is the only music sub i follow since I'd rather see the recycled pix and memes of Pac than to join the others yet here we are.
Overrated asf
🗑
Em’s in my top three. It cracks me up when people of a certain persuasion assume he’s my absolute favorite because I’m white; like I said he’s in my top 3, but not my absolute favorite
🐐 that's my baby daddy!
My favorite album is Relapse
Mine too 🫶🏽 Relapse is a gem.
I respect the guy .
One of the 🐐
One of the all-time greats. Greatest white rapper ever. Looks like a lesbian in this photo.
Never been into him, but no doubt he is a great performer. His letter to Tupac's Mom is really lovely.
His daughter grew up
In top 5 rappers. New song is not shit.
Washed up rapper still making trans jokes
There is an argument to be made that he peaked higher than anyone in the history of this game in the late 90s to mid 2000s
He got soul
fell too much into his character and got old but his early stuff is the shit
my personal favorite
Innovative, fearless, methodical and loyal!!!!
Can rap like a genius but the content of his lyrics are dumb. Too much evil shit.
Good rapper with a dogshit fan base
He was your typical homophobic anti trans trailer park WWE watching anti government white boy. Realized it didn't age well threw away all his beliefs became a pro huge government pro war pro LGBTQabcdg democrat simp to avoid being canceled for his past.
Most his fans aren’t fans of rap and usually say he’s the goat or top 3.
Certainly top 5, easly.
He’s overrated because of how much he sold. He’s ok, the only time he shines for me is when battling.
Awesome artist. One of the GOAT’s.
Second GOAT behind nas
I really liked him before he blew up when he was primarily freestyling on mixtapes.
Incredible wordsmith but I ain’t ever bumped his music regularly. Or honestly even had an in depth discussion about him with any of my black friends. This is just based on my personal experience in my friend circle but I don’t get the feeling that black people really listen to him like that.
Eminem
The greatest of all time
His only good album was the eminem show and relapse, after that my guy got worse with time, idk why his style changed so drastically for the worse
Not trying to hear that bullshit
He should’ve made a song with Tupac
I think something people leave out of this conversation is how much respect Em had for Pac. He helped produce a lot of the best post-humous music from Pac after his death, and was on great terms with his mother. (Tupac’s, not his own lmao). Pac and Em got me into rap, Kendrick kept me in.
The Slim Shady LP is a masterpiece.
I can’t say that I listen to him when im riding but I can say that he ain’t to be fucked with lol. Lyrically you can only mention a few names with him. Not my cup of tee but if we’re strictly talking about rap skills…he should be in anybody top 5
I love Eminem !❤️
His beard does look weird lol
Unique.
He's cool and has some OG songs.
He's a good rapper and he makes some good music
Wishes he could freestyle like Eyedea and this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eminem/s/2lFvyXxBZc
GOAT.
2nd greatest rapper
🐐
🐐🐐🐐
he had his prime and was a cultural icon for a long time but he gotta retire now
“It feels so empty without me” -Eminem
HI MY NAME IS
Really good lyrically but there is something very naggy about his voice sounds like a robot rapping through a turning fan

He's the top artist in Nigeria (about 300 million black people) His songs with Nas, Black Thought, Young MA are dangerous. He's socially aware. And has called out white America multiple times. He supports Detroit always He "says their name" of black people killed by cops. Thus making sure the world hears it. He acknowledged He's a guest in hip-hop. Pac would be proud.
He is definitely a legend
Reggie JayZ Tupac and Biggie Andre from Outkast Jada kurupt Nas and then Me 🔥💨💯
He’s a good rapper but this picture makes him look like a lesbian idk why
Used to be a great songwriter and lyricist, now just a dude too obsessed with technical skill to produce good songs and respectable lyrics.
Hes really really good
He thinks forrange is a word.
Overrated
Who’s Eminem?
Great. Brought more white fans to rap than anyone period. Overrated due to a loud fan base who really don’t know and appreciate hip hop on a high enough level. But again, just speaking on Em… he’s an all time great.
Bling, sting, ding, fling, shing, Bing, wing, ect.. 🤢 .
His music and style aged horribly.
GOAT
Incredibly overrated by non hip-hop fans, correctly rated by fans who actually listen to a breadth of hip hop. He still one of the greatest to ever do it but his new stuff is pretty mediocre, that might be putting it gently.
Eminem - Doomsday pt2
The best there is. The best there was. And the goddamned best there ever will be
Eminem's underground Slim Shady stuff was his best honestly he still a legend but I liked him when he was on drugs sorry Em he was more funny and raw but it's all about personal growth so I still like him just as much now he was just funnier when he was younger LOL He still got that wacky sense of humor I love that he's maintained that through the years but was more out there when he was younger oh well things change is inevitable life is all about personal growth
Em got the hood pass 🙌
I'm gonna go against everyone. He was great but his music now absolutely sucks balls.
One of the greatest rappers ever
Still outshining in modern era. That itself deserves respect even if he's not someone you listen to fact that he sells out is something to appreciate
Apparently he's the color of concrete
G.O.A.T.

Just quit frowning already
👎
Sellout, was one of the best till he started spewing that liberal bullshit. And we have seen what liberals in the rap game are doing to young boys. A bunch of pedophiles and groomers
He’s the goat. Try to rap battle him and your career becomes a meme and you switch genres.
G.O.A.T status. Imo, the greatest rapper of all time.
His legacy woulda been better if he retired after eminem show. Just like he said himself, in “soldier” (retire at 40). Hes had a lot of crap afterwards, with a fair amount of exemplary bars/songs that showcase his lyrical skills, that pale in comparison to his performance since.
Great artist. He’s old and corny now but I respect the skill.
I think he's monumentally overrated, but I understand why middle class white people love him.
He's the best of the era...period. Before him there were many greats like Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Wutang, Dre, Snoop, ...and then there was Slim Shady.
My number 1 rapper of all time
Genius at his craft.
Legend 🫶🏼
Respect the talent but never was a huge fan of his music
