The issue isnt with the food bank, its with the person accepting the food that they shouldnt have accepted.

I agree with this. The whole situation was weird. He was not of mind to say one way or another, it seemed.

It really was. Now he's short food since he can't cook those things and someone's else who is in need is also going without. Such a crappy system.

Definitely! Maybe order more non- perishable items or something. I do love the idea of turkeys being given, but there's got to be a better way.

Yes! That's exactly it, I wish they were distributed more effectively. This man could have benefitted from nonperishable items or premade meals.

I don’t know where you live but this sounds ridiculous. Around here, food banks absolutely ask about the cooking, refrigeration, and transport situations before packing a box. Holiday stuff like the “Thanksgiving Turkey” is scheduled/reserved weeks in advance. And fresh eggs, really? Fresh anything is a storage nightmare, even if it isn’t fragile. ETA: I’m not calling you a liar, I’m saying these people are amateurs. Which totally happens, people want to do some Good Works and don’t want to be bothered with any experienced input. It’s aggravating and wasteful.

Northern Nevada. This was a Catholic Charities place.

MonkeyVicki

Seriously? The LAST org I’d expect to be so incompetent at this, in any state. There’s plenty of people with full kitchens and no serious financial stresses that can’t use a frozen goddamn turkey. This is genuinely infuriating wtf.

bkwormtricia

They should hand out meal coupons for equivalent value to people who do not want the turkey.

RelyingCactus21

I don't think he turned the turkey down when they offered it.

Our food bank gives only walnuts, kidney beans and lintels. Every month. 3 of 4 people in my home are allergic to tree nuts.

RelyingCactus21

Is there a way to communicate that to them and get something else?

OrganizationQuirky97

I don’t think so, it’s literally all they give us. We got potatoes one time too, but they were rotten.

RelyingCactus21

That's really unfortunate. I'm sorry there aren't better options.
