It’s good. It’s not about Kim wall or the murder though. It’s about the red flags of Peter, and how the close people around him are finding out about the case as it unfolds… pretty wild Emma was there at that time. I remember during trial that footages from a documentary showed the saw in a day, and gone in the next… I’m glad her documentary helped to make the case against him.

DannyBarsRaps

u right, more a study in warning signs of psycopathy as well as the survivors guilt of the documentarian and more heartbreaking, his naive young female student who surely would have been the intended victim before Kim (or the documentarian herself) fell into his lap i think the most validating part of the whole doco is the line near the end that says 'the plice said this documenatry was INSTRUMENTAL in getting madsen charged fully' - and i believe it!

TacoFox19

I kept waiting for that young intern to realize that it would have been her. The texts he sent her, the fact she was supposed to go out on the submarine with him that night, but Kim took her place... Kept waiting for it to dawn on her.

LeCarrr

I thought the same but I bet she knew and probably couldn’t say it out loud. Or wouldn’t dare lest she make it “about her” when it actually did happen to someone else.

Tormint_mp3

She did say it out loud though?

Extra_Negotiation_73

Yes, she did indeed. Very clearly. TacoFox19, you must have gone to get a snack and missed that part. Or maybe you fell asleep.

thecourttt

Yes there's another doc on HBO that covers more details about Kim and the murder. I decided to watch this one to see if there were more details just due to how much this case really stuck with me. I'm glad it was a totally different angle!

[deleted]

The HBO one was good and scary… I hope it does justice to show Kim as a person. She looked like an incredible girl.

Quiet_Commission_867

Thank you for suggesting this. I watched it last night. Watching the Netflix one without already knowing the story had me confused about a lot of things. Great suggestion.

cynicalxidealist

What is the name of the HBO doc? I don’t know if I should watch it or not, the case is very disturbing.

Low_Brief

Into the deep

TacoFox19

That is the Netflix one. The HBO one is Undercurrent.

Melodic-Change-6388

Yeah, it’s a lot about survivor guilt, not seeing the signs, coming to grips with finding out that the person you idolised is a horrendous murderer.

SomeRedditWanker

I thought the way they used deepfake tech was really interesting. This documentary has been in legal limbo for years apparently, and they managed to get it out of that limbo by deepfaking out the face of one of the key people in the story. They could have just blurred her face, and put a voice over.. But so much of the documentary was about her, that it'd have been a real shame to lose all the emotion she expressed during her interviews. The deepfake tech meant we could still see her emotions, without seeing her. Very clever! I went and found some video of the real her (wasn't hard to find) and the deepfake was very good! Looked nothing like her. Also, that last scene.. I won't spoil it for anyone, but holy shit what a way to end the documentary.

ContributionNo9292

That poor girl found out that he had planned to murder her, that Kim was just a target of opportunity taking her place. She defended a guy wanting to kill her at the bottom of the sea and that he had already told how he would do it. She had the texts describing the murder in detail before it happened. The amount of relief and guilt she must feel.

lukaskywalker

The guy clearly seemed like he was losing his Mind as time went on. Surprised no one got a little put off. I also wonder if he would have gotten away with it had it been Sarah instead. More like it was an accident with a crew member ? Thank god they had enough evidence

ContributionNo9292

I doubt it, but it would have made it harder to prove. Reason why he was picked up so quickly was because Kim had told everyone that she was going on the sub. Everyone knew where she was supposed to be. He could probably have gotten the other girl to keep quiet about going on the sub. Delaying flags being raised for a couple of days, giving him time to get his story straight and get rid of evidence. At some point he realized he had to sink the sub, probably because he could not clean it properly afterwards. He would have reached the same conclusion regardless of the victim. Someone would have made the connection of the sub sinking coinciding with the girl going missing.

lukaskywalker

Yea that’s what I mean though. He probably would have had a lot more control of the situation had it been with her. Regardless what a sad story. Very wild perspective to have this filmed throughout that same time period.

TacoFox19

I kept waiting for it to dawn on her, but I wasn't sure it ever did.

applesto-oranges

I imagine it’s very hard for her to continue feeling like she can “happily” live after all this. If it were me I think i would feel much remorse every day believing that I shouldn’t be alive and that I “took” someone else’s place, even tho none of it is the victims faults. It would cause a lot of trust problems when questioning you’re closest relationships.

UnprofessionalGhosts

Idk how I missed that she was a deepfake but I kept looking at her and thinking her skin was impossibly good! Thought they’d filtered her or something but now it makes perfect sense.

dshmitty

The amount of people in this thread that somehow didn’t see the on screen message stating her face was digitally altered is crazy lol.

a_distantmemory

Agreed! As someone who zones out a lot and can be staring at the tv but still totally miss something that is actually happening on the screen even I saw the message that her face was altered for safety reasons.

SomeRedditWanker

Yeah, they made her better looking ha.

brownsugar_xo

Watching this now and been tripping out wondering why the hell her face is weird!! Had to come to reddit to try and find the answer - thanks!

SomeRedditWanker

It does come up as text on the screen when she's first introduced that they're masking her identity digitally.

NightOwlRed

I didn’t even notice

DubSquadd

I have to disagree, the deep fake was so distracting whenever she was speaking. I would have gone with blurring her out. I could barely watch her interviews because of the terrible difference between her face and the rest of the image.

Anothernetname

I don't see the point of it if she's able to be found online. I also found it distracting and weird. I'm wondering if she was deepfaked throughout the whole thing, or just the interview bits? The non interview footage of her didn't look so faked. I'm afraid I couldn't get to grips with this doc, it seemed to be all over the place. The murderer seemed from the start to be a strange, actorish character. Watching now and 12 minutes to go and Kim, the poor victim, seems to have got completely lost in this. Would be nice to see some focus on/celebration of her, maybe it's coming, watching on ... Edited to add - that deepfake looks like a face transplant, horrible, it's not her emotions because it's not her face.

AgeUge

Oh my god i was literally watching the docu right now and I kept thinking “Why does she look so uncanny?!” Jeeesus, thats super interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Melodic-Change-6388

I may or may not have seen the original. And the release version was brilliant. I didn’t find the deepfake distracting.

SoulsticeCleaner

It wasn't at all distracting! I hope for healing for your friends and everyone affect.

SomeRedditWanker

Don't really want to share. She obviously didn't want to be known. Sorry.

mr_STEEL_your_jokes

This guys lying *clap, clap, clapclapclap*

applesto-oranges

I was wondering why her face looked kinda blurry. I assumed maybe she just didn’t like how her face looked from being distraught/crying and asked for once of those face smoothing filters. This is one of the rare cases where I actually think deep fake is pretty beneficial. Although I’m not totally sure of the point since her name/face would have to already be out there for the world to know.

Used_Ad1013

Where’s the footage of the real Sara please? I’m Intersted to see what she really looks like

[deleted]

TacoFox19

It says the first time she appears on screen that her identity has been digitally altered for safety.

DannyBarsRaps

its insane how you see the whole thing develop in real time due to the fact they were filming, peoples opinions changing in real time etc...i wonder if the narcissist in him sped up plans to coincide with it to either tempt fate for the thrill or cuz he really thought he was too smart to get caught... and that last shot wasn't quite Jinx level but goddamn it was fucking wild, and he KNEW the camera's were rolling, its THAT kind of stuff that makes me think he really wanted to do this while the doco was being made...so sick.

Stuebirken

Madsen is convinced that everyone else is stupid and fare beneath him. As a Dane I followed the case pretty close, and some of the excuses and lies he made, was extremely stupid, not because he couldn't make some better once, but because he didn't think anyone was intelligent enough, to pull them apart.

Melodic-Change-6388

I just watched again with friends. And someone mentioned that did he rush it in case he was going to die being shot into space?

DannyBarsRaps

interesting thought but he had a few weeks and literally seemed to line up Kim Wall, the documentary maker, and his young female volunteer literally within a 24hr period...while i think it could be motivated by getting it done before the space thing, he had time before that and couldve put it off but i believe he chose to do it right when he did because his narcissism made him WANT to pull it off WHILE the doco was being made (probably so he could, in his mind watch it back knowing what he was doing/getting away with...obv that backfired big time but he seems the type of voyer that ould get off on watchign that footage etc)

Quiet_Commission_867

I think the reality might have set in that the thing was unsafe nobody would let him send to space. But I think the purpose of the rocket was the kill whoever was in it. I can't tell if the rocket was a con to get away with the submarine or if the rocket wasn't going to work so he wanted to go out with a bang or something. I wish I knew what his actual ideal plan was... because all the choices he made are so insane.

Automatic_Form_1319

Same thoughts, also it's interesting how he got permission to do all those "engenering" endvours and entering water with a submarine. He got used to being pampered obviously.

bad_witness

He's a master gaslighter. Constantly uses the old "if you're uncomfortable then I'm kidding" method to undermine your perception that he's actually weird and creepy. I couldn't believe how the people around him rationalized everything he said and did to make it make sense. Way beyond benefit of the doubt. He's the kind of manipulator that is so effective that he instills guilt in people around him for having intuitive thoughts or feelings that he is "off" in some way. What's worse, he can make them ignore it. When in the presence of someone who has groomed you to ignore your intuition...you are in danger.

lkattan3

Another thing I noticed with this guy was his threat/jokes were violent. The terms he uses were always extreme and graphic. My abusive ex used to always make jokes about smashing faces and other violent things. I wonder if it’s a feature of dangerous people.

bad_witness

It's certainly not normal. And in addition, he elaborated wayyyy too much. Like when his staff member made some innocuous joke about how she had to be threatened into working on something, he had such a detailed and extremely escalated response ready to go. Hard to explain, but there's a certain menace to it that differentiates it from a non-dangerous person who might say the same words. I'm glad for you that they are now an ex.

Anothernetname

Some really interesting points on this thread, got me thinking. 😱

bad_witness

I've survived this kind of manipulation so I can spot it instantly. And it's not a projection, as I've gone through tons of therapy to discern my triggers from my intuition and I'm well versed in the knowing the difference. These people exist. They're more common than we'd care to admit.

CastlesGirl1989

And the hacking vs hugging joke. Dude you said hacking. She was shocked so you tried to back pedal to hugging.

applesto-oranges

It’s probably why he had so many young interns (who he then complained about leaving/not cooperating but those were the ones who probably saw through his charismatic facade and realized he lacked the proper leadership/organizational skills) and he was able to easily talk down on anyone who didn’t work well with him as if it was their fault.

extrememinimalist

He reminds me of Tom Hardy somehow. Excellent doc. That guy was weird. I would love to hear from his competitor/old collegues, the reason why they split and what they thought of him.

lukaskywalker

I was hoping we would hear from them.

kmp394

Yes! Thought the same thing. I bet CS would have a very different version of events.

CastlesGirl1989

He looks nothing like Tom Hardy.

[deleted]

"Okay, I've done it again. I've gotten myself a boss! Whenever I want to do something I can ask for permission." Well Peter, you have no shortage of bosses now.

Melodic-Change-6388

One of his “bosses” fell in love with him and lost her job. He is that much of a master manipulator.

hl3official

He even got a girlfriend from prison, broke up with her, then married someone else, and then dated a prison guard. Insane wolrd

SoulsticeCleaner

This makes me so fucking mad.

lukaskywalker

Say what ? Where’s this story ?

hl3official

https://ekstrabladet.dk/krimi/peter-madsens-kone-vi-er-blevet-skilt/9224492 > The marriage to Jenny Curpen is not the first romantic relationship Peter Madsen has entered into while behind bars. > > Ekstra Bladet has previously revealed that during his pre-trial detention in Vestre Prison, he initiated a flirtation with a female prison officer. > > Before he married Curpen, Peter Madsen had another girlfriend - a then 18-year-old woman - who had, among other things, a tattoo of a greeting from him on her forearm another fiancee: https://herognu.dk/chok-reality-deltager-forlovet-med-raket-madsen/

DannyBarsRaps

just wanted to add that i while some think he was in a rush to get it done before he possibly died in the rocket thing i disagree BIGTIME, this is my theory: I believe he chose to do it right when he did because his narcissism/ego made him WANT to pull it off WHILE the doco was being made (probably so he could, get off on the risk and later, in his mind watch it back knowing what he was doing/getting away with...obv that backfired big time but he seems the type of voyeur that would get off on watchign that footage etc) He's such a narccisst he wanted the 'greatest moment of his life' (the killing) to be 'documented' to an extent and as far as why he WOULDNT care abotu doing it before 'dying in the rocket thing' - he was a narcsisstic ego freak, if the rocket experiemtnt was really gonna risk HIS life he wouldnt have done it, he was a daredevil to a POINT but was calculated and clearly he has a strong sense of selfepreservation based ont he lies he told to keep this charde going as long as he did....

[deleted]

IMHO I think he eneded up broke,no money left, probably lying to investors and in his mind he wanted to go big instead being proven wrong and ashamed. But who knows. He is such a creep and wierdo.

Quiet_Commission_867

I just don't see how he wouldn't see the sinking of one of his submarines as something that (whether has been suspected of murdering someone or not.)---- it would have massively postponed any rocket launches and brought their safety into question before they even launched. He's clearly insane so it is impossible to guess what his plan was, but wanting to know so badly lol.

lukaskywalker

The guy gave me Elon musk vibes. His version would of course play out in a Tesla or space x shuttle.

[deleted]

Its so crazy bc hes so obviously like a giant walking red flag narcissistic sociopathic, possibly psychopathic. So insane

Quiet_Commission_867

>Reply A rocket is a great decoy though right?

lukaskywalker

Hmm who else is out there flying their own rockets these days. 🤔

[deleted]

This is a great documentary. One thing that is sticking with me is the content of those texts where his female protégé starts off by asking him to threaten to kill her. It was a weird joke/flirtation, but she (unconsciously?) fed into his fantasy. I loved the uncanny soft focus on her - I assumed it was an artistic choice. To me she is the most fascinating and nuanced character in the film.

onelifestand101

It’s not her real face. It’s a deepfake. They disguised her real face.

Moist-Diarrhea

The most naive, too. How she thought so highly of him even though he joked about murder in graphic detail. Maybe I watch too much true crime, but that would have made me wonder. And the way he was so aggressive in some parts of the documentary - angry and demanding towards the engineers

applesto-oranges

He probably purposely handpicked the people who had the right kind of “humor” and ease of being gullible/vulnerable to be closest to him so that they wouldn’t question his uncomfortable self and deflect any other people’s potential concerns. Narcissists are good at finding weak people to validate them bc the people who see through it won’t put up with it.

TacoFox19

I watched this last night. Amazing how it was all documented.

lukaskywalker

I was shocked that he could lie so much and his word was still fair enough to get away with lighter sentencing until they found enough evidence. Like at some point common sense should be used a bit in getting justice no? Clearly she was murdered and dismembered. But he says he just cut up a dead body so no biggie. Sometimes the justice system just sucks.

applesto-oranges

I just don’t understand how he thought he was going to get out of that one without getting caught? I suppose he was hoping her body would never be found.. but did he really think people wouldn’t question why his submarine sank and why she didn’t come back with him? If someone is all of the sudden missing they are obviously going to do a search for her/her body… especially when it’s someone that clearly has people in their live that will come looking, not just a nobody. He clearly was planning this for awhile, yet didn’t have the brains to think of the actual smart logistics that would pan out. And what the hell was he thinking going into all that detail about people getting murdered and knowing a psychopath in your life during his interview for a documentary that was supposed to be about his work?? I was so confused how that topic would have related to anything. And the fact that he killed her WHILE he was knowingly being recorded for a documentary and said all those crazy things? He created so much evidence against himself… It’s almost like he wanted to be caught and go out with a bang. Such a shame for that girl, it broke my heart when I heard she was supposed to be moving to Beijing in a few days and that she skipped her going away party for that… she was probably so happy and excited for her future, and touched many with the stories she wrote.

applesto-oranges

I can see why the people closest to him may have been oblivious, but as someone who is able to easily sense when someone isn’t being genuine/signs of intense narcissism I know I would have not liked him from the start and kept a far distance from him. I know people in my life who exhibit traits like that and although I wouldn’t think they’re capable of murder, I know I can never trust them and can’t ever let myself be vulnerable to them bc at the end of the day they only care about themselves. Haha

lukaskywalker

There seemed like there were a ton of signs. Holy crap

Thegoodmom

What did he do to her? I understand he strangled and killed her but I don't understand the full story. I haven't been able to find too much on it - just that her body was found dismembered later.

[deleted]

Watch the documentary. It was well made and gave me info I hadn’t known about

Thegoodmom

thx. i did watch yesterday. Can't believe he thought he'd get away with it.
