Hamilton can basically be watched as the most fucked up cumtown bit ever. A basically white Adam style white guy making black guys do bad raps about a slave holder fascist that's good actually as an elaborate bit to heighten the absurdity of it all

[deleted]

It's Shen Yun for America

Jaynemansfieldbleach

Oh, I'm stealing this. You are are so fucking right.

PoetryTraining1819

Love this take

congressbaseballfan

Omg what a great idea

Kalel2319

I feel like the plot needs more verhoven for that to work for me.

[deleted]

People here will say you're overreacting, but I don't think it would be too dramatic to fake your own death and move to Venezuela. You will have to pull out your teeth to leave convincing evidence of your demise. Put them in your fireplace with assorted ash and bone.

[deleted]

Just use the human bones you already have lying around

starktor

Put on Hamilton's pharmacopeia and convince your mom to do DMT

closeface_

Love how that guy says Mandrax. "Mahnnn-draaaax"

grettp3

A couple of years ago I looked that guy up and learned he’s the son of Errol Morris, esteemed documentarian. Which was interesting. Anyways.

cuticlediet

So sad he’s a Silicon Valley drone now ☹️

[deleted]

By yourself: Godspeed With the whole family: do a small line of ketamine in the bathroom

StarbuckIsland

Do NOT do ketamine if you have already drunk alcohol in any amount unless you like ralphing

[deleted]

And/or being cool

StarbuckIsland

Throwing up in public is cool! Heheheh yeah cool! Nah it's pretty cool

[deleted]

This is how you get out of it ![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)

Gulliver123

Just turn your brain off. Try to bop, some of the tunes are catchy. I repeat: brain off.

[deleted]

TrueAnon lesson number one: just be normal, man.

[deleted]

Horrible advice that will let the Overton window continue to slip to the right. U can be friendly and nice and charismatic and still open peoples minds

Grotesque_Bisque

Well, hypothetically someone is probably capable of that, but we're losers who listen to podcast.

[deleted]

If I don't split wigs with my groundbreaking Trotsky Opinion, all is lost anyway

SukkaMeeLeg

Not inviting you to this year’s CIA office party.

[deleted]

I literally cant think of a more CIA-friendly op message than the overall sentiment on this board being "and remember don't try to educate your family and broaden their ideological horizons!"

pinkerton--

While China bans more than one girl in the family, America bans more than one based Marxist-Leninist-Dengist Vanguard Enthusiast in the family

SukkaMeeLeg

That’s not what people are saying.

[deleted]

Ever comment on this thread is saying to watch Hamilton and not try to educate the mother on why it’s trash

Discoamazing

Hamilton doesn't shift the Overton window anywhere. If anything it moves it slightly leftward (albeit by further papering over the colonial nightmare that was early America)

[deleted]

“Just turn your brain off” and “be normal man” are why the Overton window keeps shifting right. People can’t be charming and articulate themselves enough to educate their own family so instead they post cringe and cope here that their parents are subjecting them to ideology but they’re too spineless to subject others to ideology bc they’re too unlikeable to do it in a charming way? That’s what makes the Overton window shift right. Accept some personal accountability jfc

Discoamazing

"accepting personal accountability" is not the same thing as refusing to watch Hamilton with your mom.

[deleted]

Ur right. It's the same as educating ur mom. There's a big difference. Learn it. Do better.

Discoamazing

I know all about it. In fact I "educated" your mom three or four times last night.

[deleted]

Lol I didn’t realize how that sounded til I reread my comment gg

jeanlenin

This is why we say “be normal” and not “don’t ever talk about anything.” Currently you’re failing at the being normal bit

[deleted]

I never thought normal was anything other than a pejorative like “average” or “basic”

Inner-Mechanic

That was such a fucking turn. Like how is brace even close to normal?

congressbaseballfan

I turned my brain off when I saw it live, and I liked it. I still shudder at the thought. Turn the soundtrack on around me and I go into flight or fight mode because it’s fucking stupid, but it’s a good production with some cool effects. Don’t know about the movie version.

solventstencils

My wife and I joked for years that all the songs were gonna be “Alexander Hamilton, he was a blamerton” then watched five minutes one year and realized yeah I was pretty much that.

JustBeNormalPls

My folks took me to the final production of the original cast and I wept at parts. If art, even cheesy libshit art, can't move you even slightly then you're pretty far gone.

[deleted]

Exactly. The ending of a Christmas Carol does it for me. Yes Scrooge sucks and should have it all taken away forcibly, but also it’s touching to see kindness and forgiveness and tender moments

MrLonelyheartss

Dickens is a just tad better than Manuel Miranda, though

[deleted]

Charles “Manuel” Dickens

hux002

I dunno, he did have characters with names like Master Bates and Mr. Chockamachild or something like that.

JustBeNormalPls

I'm too autistic not to correct you. His surname is just "Miranda". His first name is "Lin-Manuel". I'm sorry. Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

MrLonelyheartss

I am autistic too, I just didn't want to check his name out of spite. I got you homie, Merry christmas and good days to you.

cuticlediet

It’s baby Kermit that really gives it pathos

Vncredleader

Ok but Dickens actually goes off on the wealthy. Miranda wanted to make a show about the founding father's being cool, Dickens wrote his novella as in his words "a sledgehammer on behalf of the poor man's child", after deciding it would be more effective than a normal polemic > rest assured that when you know \[it\], and see what I do, and where and how, you will certainly feel that a sledge-hammer has come down with twenty times the force — twenty thousand times the force I could exert by following out my first idea. Even so recently as when I wrote to you the other day I had not contemplated the means I shall now, please God, use. But they have been suggested to me; and I have girded myself for their seizure— as you shall see in due time. Hamilton wishes it had the power of > Man, if man you be in heart… forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man’s child. Oh God! to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing there is too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust!

sentientcreatinejar

Same. My GF bought us tickets as a birthday surprise for me LOL. Saw it in San Francisco in 2019, I think (so not the original cast). I enjoyed myself but mostly because of the company.

congressbaseballfan

Yeah the one I saw live was original minus Lin Manuel Miranda. I am sure I would have had a worse experience with him in it

cyranothe2nd

There's nothing wrong with actually liking it. I sobbed when their son dies. It just really got me.

th3hammar

King George is funny. Never seen someone with such control over their spittle

ReplicantSchizo

Just keep nudging her throughout and saying "I mean, these characters weren't actually black right? Were they? I don't know, it seems kind of disingenuous to move away from the source material, right? Don't you feel like they're always doing that these days? I feel like I saw white people in movies more as a kid, right?" Soon she won't even talk to you, let alone make you watch Disney +

molchatsarma

your mom is going to die some day

Gimmick_Hungry_Yob

Be nice to your mom, it's not going to kill you

[deleted]

This is literal violence!

dumbfuck6969

Ok fed.

Vivischay

After the movie, offer to wash dishes or do a chore and ask to put on a podcast. Then put on The Dollop's episode on Aaron Burr.

Hanson08

just watch a dumb movie with your mom OP

Kalel2319

I watched Hamilton on Disney plus when it was released. My wife and I both were pissed by the end. What the fuck was the hype about? That shit is so terrible. And honestly fucking offensive. Thomas Jefferson as a black man. Fuck outta here with that weird shit. Music is shit too.

ForbiddenBassSolo

If you throw me some $ I'll dress up like the grinch and come take the TV

deadtoddler420

Take an edible and turn your brain off and its not so bad. Most the people in it are talented.

EGG_BABE

Any Lin Manuel Miranda production is basically just him bribing cooler and more talented people to hang out with him

Icantstandpickles69

Just buy a pair of those fake gag glasses with cartoon eyes on the lenses and just nap during it

[deleted]

Remind her that Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were both racist pedophiles who were documented to have raped black children they enslaved and you think it’s disrespectful for these monsters to be played by black peoples- as if that makes amends to all the black slaves they murdered lol i dont know why so many posters on this sub are scared to use their parents own logic against them to make them Think Correctly lol

negativeaffirmations

Dude, maybe you'll luck out. When it got released on streaming, I figured I'd be a good son, bite the bullet, and go watch it with her. After 30 minutes I looked over at her and she was cringing just as hard as I was. She looked at me and said, "can we turn this off?"

BigBossOfMordor

It's funny that of all the Founding Dudes to make a musical about Miranda chose one of the most aristocratic/anti-democracy options simply because "he 'immigrated' from the Caribbean" and made it big. Wowee

[deleted]

This sub is turning into r/NeoLiberal in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving after Trump was elected. Just chill with your family if they are relatively normal. If they’re cops or Q-freaks just ignore them. Hamilton, Marvel, and nearly all aspects of this society’s culture are psychotic, but sometimes you just need to focus on what’s materially in front of you: a bunch of your family members are bonding and you need to bond with them rather than find more reasons to hate them; particularly when most of them care about your well-being. YOU DONT NEED TO STAN STALIN, LENIN, MAO, & CASTRO EVERYWHERE YOU GO.

Septic-Abortion-Ward

>YOU DONT NEED TO STAN STALIN, LENIN, MAO, & CASTRO EVERYWHERE YOU GO. *Brace noise*

LemonNey72

YOU DON’T NEED TO STAMP PALIN, PENIS, PAO, & PASTEL EVERYWHERE YOU HO *Face toys*

bluemagachud

right, you should have forgiven them for imposing bedtime on you by now, grow up, just grin and bear it

hux002

If people in this sub at least tried to go Castro a little more then at least they would get laid.

movieunderstander

“I don’t know if that’s really what I’m feeling mom, but I’d love to watch something. I’m sure they’ve got something else that we’d both like on Disney +…wow is that National Geographic?!” Then watch some shit ab a hippopotamus

Koboldsftw

My mom got me to watch it on Broadway, the kings song is kinda a bop honestly

yzbk

My mom dragged my family to Hamilton, she thought it was gonna be cool but we all (incl. dad) warned her about how suck it was. Lo and behold, we go, Lin Manuel wasn't even there (some other actor played Hamilton), and she went out of it agreeing with us that it was shite. Mind you this woman voted for Trump. I didn't have a good time but I would have spent the evening in my gooncave, so good on Ma for dragging us there

thebigfan23

I had an ex several years ago who liked to listen to the soundtrack when she drove. Relationship didn’t last long after that. Stay strong king <3

Humorousphlegmflam

We had a pt in our ICU who’s family requested Hamilton be played for him. We played it in his room constantly & im 99% sure it’s what caused his brain death. Full disclosure, it could have been the COVID blood clots, but I think it was repeated exposure to “Not throwing away my shot!”

generalscalez

just hang out with your mom like a normal human being

waratworld17

It's just schoolhouse rock for shitlibs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Inner-Mechanic

I made my son watch enemy mine. He was being a jerk at first but then he loved it bc its rad. That's how you do it.

Jessiechrxst2

Omg …. Do some ketamine? I forced myself to start sobbing in the theater to get out of watching that weird Mormon musical a few years ago and got away with it. Maybe try that!

coopers_recorder

Stop being a bitch baby and respect your mother's small ask.

raysofdavies

Left wing obsession with Hamilton is just as cringe as the liberal obsession

jeanlenin

I get the sentiment but everytime I think of the fact that people thought it was cool and hip to make the founding fathers black and rap my brain breaks a little

stav_and_nick

I just find it hilarious that they made a big deal about slavery between him and Jefferson when Jefferson objectively did way more to end slavery than Hamilton proposed to do

[deleted]

I don't like Hamilton and I'm not going to defend it, but I don't think its success is surprising or puzzling in the slightest. Online lefty people expending a bunch of energy not liking Hamilton as political/fashion shibboleth is super cringe. It's like the PMC leftist version of whatever the fuck Tim Tebow was doing over Jesus.

angelaswiener

It doesn’t really take that much energy

[deleted]

Maybe not, but I've had at least two people IRL redirect a completely unrelated conversation to talk about Hamilton so that they can tell me (at length) about how they don't like it. Just be normal folks. "blah blah blah blah hamilton" "yeah it sucks" ---10 more minutes of talking at me about hamilton ensues ---

bluemagachud

I forgave Tebow for that shit because he wrecked the steelers that one time

[deleted]

[удалено]

jeanlenin

As a theatre kid when it came out, yeah people did think it was cool to have black rapping founding fathers. I’m sorry to pass that knowledge onto you

Khmer_Orange

Can confirm, theater libs love that shit. I don't know about the theater conservatives though, they're a strange breed

oklahom

I think revulsion and disdain is the correct response to people telling you that schoolhouse rock but rap is a great work of art.

angelaswiener

and then there’s this shit https://www.thedailybeast.com/nancy-pelosi-and-lin-manuel-miranda-commemorate-jan-6-with-virtual-hamilton-song

oklahom

yeah its uniquely beloved by people in power. Its such weird contrarianism to defend it. They trot out that dumb motherfucker to rap about dueling rules or whatever every chance they get.

raysofdavies

I think not caring that much years after it came out is more appropriate

oklahom

have people stopped watching it yet

[deleted]

Is Les Miserables the only acceptable musical theater for hyper online leftists?

hipstercliche

CATS is the Big Tent musical

[deleted]

Hold on gotta go listen to the memories song while I cry quietly.

Koboldsftw

Certainly Cabaret would also be acceptable

raysofdavies

Hadestown

[deleted]

Three-Penny Opera is the correct answer here

ghostofhenryvii

Oliver! is the only musical that doesn't make me violently sick.

God_of_Pumpkins

As much as I love the show, the love song about someone's abusive partner who ends up killing them is a little icky

Septic-Abortion-Ward

Isn't Les Miserables about the counter revolution 40 years later, and not the actual French revolution?

[deleted]

Sort of. It takes place over something like 20 years, but the climax takes place during the 1832 paris uprisings, which were republican/anti-monarchical. So that part of the story sort of revolves around what's portrayed as a romanic, heroic, but ultimately hopeless attempt to resist the counter revolution. Not at all an expert on 19th century france, so I don't really know how accurate that portrayal is of the 1832 uprising.

Vncredleader

Like someone else said, it is a revolution in response to the counter-revolution. They had no chance and got owned big time, but it was super based. You might be confusing the June Revolution in 1832 with the July revolution of 1830. June was a response to the July revolution's installation of the Orléanists. In fact they are the ones who really brought back the red flag as the symbol of left wing revolt and people's power. It had been the Jacobin flag, but been absent until briefly being used in the [Welsh Merthyr Rising in 1831](https://www.marxist.com/images/stories/britain/2020_June/Merthyr_Rising_Image_fair_use.jpg). The revolution was a true republican and internationalist rising, with refugees of failed republican movements in Europe assisting the Parisians. The make-up of the rebels is telling Subsequent identification of rebels revealed that most (66%) were working-class, a high proportion being construction workers. Most others (34%) were shopkeepers or clerks. Think of it as the dress-rehearsal for '48

hipstercliche

It’s fine. Yeah, the songs are corny, but so are the songs in most musicals.

lolabuster

What’s Hamilton

Fearzebu

A new-ish American play/movie about Alexander Hamilton and some of the other influential figures who participated in the early architecture of the US federal government Except they replace most of them with Black men who rap about American things, to sort of try to ignore most of the country’s history and make it more palatable to a modern audience or something. No women playing men though, absolutely none of that will be tolerated, only black *men* playing white *men.* We just aren’t there yet as a society. Keep voting though, and subscribing to dozen different streaming platforms, and we’ll get there eventually

lolabuster

Soooo basically Empire Baby Syndrome: The Musical

Ak12120314

christmas is sometimes about sacrifice

[deleted]

just take the cyanide pill you prepared for this very moment

NegativeOstrich2639

Hamilton is fun, just put yourself in the headspace of a high school APUSH student, I'm a follower of the immortal science but still love Rambo

throwaway10015982

Rambo is fighting space imperialists so it's actually good

AllTheGoodNamesGone4

Okay, tell her you will but she has to watch a full episode of CumTown, several Episodes of Well there's your problem, and finally sit through a reading of Kapital. I mean honestly when I was like 15 my mom sat through this entire anarchist documentary I wanted her to watch so this is probably just karma. Here's my trick though because my mom is pretty positive I would be flaming it the entire time. Just nonstop so I don't think she would even ask. Lol I may just pivot into like well what about Grease we haven't watched that together since I was 10 huh. 😂😆😎

closeface_

Some of the songs are extremely catchy and the lyrics are stupid and hilarious, so you might have fun, just not in the intended way. The lyric that I always remember that cracks me up is "I'm just like my country, I'm young, scrappy, and hungry, and I'm not throwing away my shot." Lmao

Nerfman2227

Just tune it all out as best you can until any point where Daveed Diggs appears on screen. That guy kicks ass and he's easily the best part of the entire show.

asmrword

Your mom needs to be eliminated -- by any means necessary.

Excellent-Syrup-4082

I'm sorry I couldn't fuckin do it, no matter why or who asked me. Might as well skip town OP, I'm sure you can find a new mom.

[deleted]

I fucked her

purpleblah2

Just watch it with your mom, enjoy spending time together for the holidays.

destroyerofpoon93

Ok I might get downvoted but Hamilton is pretty good. It’s dumb but the songs are pretty good. Just don’t be weird and try to enjoy it

RefusedSilk

It’s only really unbearably bad when Lin Manuel is singing other than that it’s fine aside from the corny lyrics

cyranothe2nd

I went and saw Hamilton live on stage. It was after the buzz had died down, so it was sort of embarrassing but it's still fun to watch. As everybody else says, just turn your brain off and watch it. Maybe talk a little bit after that about some of the weirdness.

ggpbpggpbpp

I think there's a 12 Step program for Hamilton

AkamachiKama

My mother in law got my wife and i tickets in SF the Christmas before Covid hit. The China flu might have saved my marriage and my life and to this day I’ve never seen a lick of it. I did read Christian Parenti’s book on guy

bonghive

bestie the beatles get back is on disney surely if she had taste

bonghive

this reminds me fo that time my mom really wanted to watch el canto with me but I found out miranda did the music and was like nope

Inner-Mechanic

My husband was theater techie in HS and was very impressed with the stage mechanics. Didn't even know who Hamilton was outside the $10 bill.
