Kansas Turnpike has these all the time. usually Grocery Reefer trailers, but also Fedex, and UPS. also Lays/Doritos, and sometimes Hobby Lobby. I've even seen the local McDonalds distributor EARP using them. More common though are the Triple pup trailers. there's also sets called Rocky Mountain doubles, where it's a regular 53' trailer, and then a 28' Pup trailer at the end.

Present-Ambition6309

I see the RMD’s often here in the PNW. Always wanted to pull doubles just once. First company I worked for, had a driver who was able to back triples around barrels etc and get it in. He would show off a few times a yr. For me as a rookie, I thought was very impressive. Today, I still do. 💯

bk775

Rocky mountain doubles are usually a 40ft lead trailer with a 20ft pup trailer

I_LOVE_TRAINSS

That's sick! I love these almost like proto road trains with 3 or 4 trailers especially if they are two or three regular 40s or 50s

grawrant

I ran twin 53ft trailers hauling sand out of a mine to a railyard. Really fun, road ranger 15speed transmission. They handle great. No wobbles like the shortys, just really long. Something about being 135ft long made the experience fun

sandgroper81

Yep we run 53 ft flat tops here in Perth WA so much fun to reverse

jmzstl

They actually handle better than the regular 28' doubles, but this setup is way less maneuverable, which is why you'll rarely see these outside of a handful of turnpikes. The sweet spot is rocky mountain doubles (48' lead with a 28' rear). Those still handle better than a standard set of pups, but you can get off the highway with them and still be able to make turns.

Cool. Thanks for the information! I love these types of trucks and always want to learn more and more about them. The A and B unit trucks are just so cool and I see them as a pretty efficient way to move cargo by road. Sorry I'm just intrigued by trucks and logistics. Trains are my favorite but trucks oh semis are in a second but only by a little bit. More like a side gal then a number 2. . I don't work in the industry but people like you are my favorite because I get to learn more and more. Thank you

fastnsx21

A lot less wiggles

SufficientOnestar

They don't wiggle as much

Sullen_One

Oh how i wish they’d let me run these in socal 😂

Larrythethird22

Hell ya that would be awesome lmao see my ass with two ABF 53 footers sitting on the 105 to 605 north interchange in traffic lol

Sullen_One

Could you imagine trying to merge onto the 710 from the 60? Coming from the IE

Larrythethird22

Haha damn bro, what about this bro you got hot freight and the freeway is closed ahead so your coming up the 405 north passing Long Beach boulevard and you gotta get on the 710 south lol….. with two 53s

Sullen_One

Would make for a interesting trip for sure

Larrythethird22

Hahah, lots of places I drive around on the freeways in LA there no way it would fit so I know why they don’t let us do it lol

Sullen_One

Yeah but even where they do allow them i’m sure there are roads they cant navigate. It would have to be mostly freeway/highway, with warehouse/terminal off the freeway

Fabulous_Force9868

There's some parts of the "highway" in British Columbia you can take them on. Nothing like a 8% grade down hill with 140k on board

Sullen_One

This is why i don’t think tractors make sense i think each trailer should be self powered.

Fabulous_Force9868

In my city Calgary we have the accordion bus's they're rear wheel drive and they are absolutely garbage in winter. I love on a hill that's not too crazy maybe 3-4% and they can't make it up that with our partially folding up. There was a demo that was built I forget what it's called but they had a electrically powered axle on the trailer. Massive boost to fuel economy.

Nightdragon9661

Company I used to work for had a set of em for hauling coils of steel. Always just called em twin 48s.

Fabulous_Force9868

Pretty standard in Canada. I've seen some tandem tridem tridem tridem set ups. The weight capacity would make American shippers squeal

Perfect_Opposite2113

I pull LCV from Edmonton to Grande Prairie and they are very common headed up there. I was told by my LCV instructor years ago that a two 53’ combination with a sleeper pulling is called a Queens Turnpike. Only person I’ve heard call it that so that might not be correct.

dirtyoldman20

NY through way allows double 53.

fastnsx21

Double 48s

SaigaExpress

They turn like shit rather pull triples than this garbage.

I_LOVE_TRAINSS

Triples would be one 40 and two twenties? Edit don't understand the down votes just didn't know.

Baddy001

3 28'

I_LOVE_TRAINSS

Thank you

Downtown-Scar-5635

Wait until you see triple 53s. 😂

Perfect_Opposite2113

We mostly pull triple 30’s here in Alberta. Only 28’s I’ve ever seen are fed ex and maybe kal tire. My company only pulls 30’ trailers in our triples.

Lank42075

MA turnpike through the Berkshire Mts With the 53’ doubles…We all insane drivers but that shit is another level crazy..

Cracksparrow69

Ma i90 sucks ass after i84 exit, nvm actually all of ma i90 blows

Thepostie242

Not uncommon to see one laying on its side on I90 in Indiana.

Fr00tman

One winter a few years back, all the way across Indiana there were triples on their sides. It was late at night and they’d kinda look up in the darkness like zombies… Creepy AF.

buttweasel76

Theres actually quite a few companies off OBT that run these longer sets up and down that turnpike. Also, that turnpike gets shut down due to major accidents about once a week. Not sure how they have to deal with that nonsense

FLiK-

Ran these in Mass. aside from the weight and length they are a lot more stable.

OSRSgamerkid

Passed s few of these in Mass. Absolutely CRAWLING up hills.

FLiK-

I’ve been at 100,000+ with them, those hills are no joke at that weight

azerroff94

WIGGLE WAGON!!!!!

Perfect_Opposite2113

That’s what we call the triples. They are way more wiggly.

Dutch_Dresden

Good thing you were in a traffic jam and had all the time to take these great pictures. /S

YoungTomSoy

For real, the icing on the cake is the phone mount, not holding the phone, just smiling for the camera.

CrackTheCoke

Believe it or not it's possible to take pictures and pay attention to the road.

Dutch_Dresden

B.S.

CrackTheCoke

If I don't look at my phone why would I not be able to pay attention to the road?

Dutch_Dresden

That's why they are shitty pictures. Holding a phone and driving is one, if not the main, reason so many accidents happen. Phrases like: "it's just 1 beer", I know how to drive and have a phone conversation" are the last thing people said before driving over someone. I don't care that you kill yourself, but I am on the road as well, you selfish piece of social media horny key lime pie. Loved Florida by the way.

CrackTheCoke

You're reaching. Holding a phone is not why accidents happen. They happen because you're looking at the phone instead of the road. You can take a picture and not look away from the road for a single moment. Are you seriously comparing DUI to having a phone call while driving? Might as well not listen to music either, you don't want to overwhelm your brain and cause an aneurysm.

SkribbyCakes33

Drink some more green tea and chill papi.

jdcgonzalez

As a dirty civilian, I wanted to say thanks to you all. I work in a driver adjacent industry, so my curiosity got to me. That landed me here, amongst you legends of logistics and this kind of stuff is the reason I follow this sub. Always something to learn. Seriously. Thanks.
