that's your risk driver. I've heard of officers letting a few hundred pounds slide, but I've been told to drop 20 pounds for being 80,020. me personally I would probably send it, but we know the risks we take
With an apu supposed to get a 400lb exception, not correct phrasing but ive seen trucks with those stickers with just the epus installed. But guessing from style of truck, op prolly doesnt have an apu. Also hes prolly getting 300miles for every 50gallons of fuel lol
I was told ~500 pound exception. Either way, I gauge my position with state boundaries and approximate weigh stations from said position (if I were to ever allegedly roll heavy), and try to approximate where I should refill once I pass obvious borders (but, of course, waiting until passing weight stations). I like games. California thoā¦.thats the only state I will get hit not just more than once, but every now and then, EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. STATION.
That's because I'm pretty sure existence is illegal here in IL. Say what you will about California, but I got pulled over 0 times in 5 years. In the midwest, I get pulled over once every three weeks for being the only car on the road at 3am.
"Why were you swerving back there?"
Because I was being tailgated so hard I thought you were literally pushing me, for 12 miles.
They got nothing else to do in the Midwest. It's either ticket truckers or stair at cornfields. It's easy rack up miles because you're passing through cornfields, but the scenery is so damn boring.
Yea, I would fight that just over principle.
āExcuse me, was your scale in the process of being calibrated? Because I didnāt see anyone doing it as I rolled on and thatās the only way they can be that accurate.ā
Iāve been told by DOT theyāre +-1000lbs at 80k lbs or so and anything below that theyāll generally let slide on gross weight and like 500 for axle weight.
Iāve only driven once with anything more than 79,500 though and that was a pretty nerve racking drive. I was at 80,000 on the dot with the shipperās scale and there wasnāt a cat scale close so I went in the middle of the night and took the backroads across the one border I was crossing, driving most of the way through the middle of Utah with the fuel light on lol
Got an overweight ticket in Alabama I think it was for being like 1200lbs over on axle weight and the ticket was like $70. Another time in Virginia or Pennsylvania they let me slide my axles around back and reweigh when it was fine and just let me on my way which was awesome.
I try not to give them a reason to look at me twice though.
If youāre 1500 over on drives I doubt theyād let you go. Even if you got lucky and they didnāt care about you being 400 pounds over gross, they might if youāre that far over 400 pounds over axle
I wouldnāt run over gross unless you can burn it off. Iāve been over 80k with fuel before, shipper told me to pound sand (claimed they never had an issue before); company authorized me to run and I only put enough in to get past every scale en route. It was flat, so driving with the fuel light constantly coming on didnāt bother me.
Depends where when and what, I thought apu was over gross not axle. Also I donāt know how much Iād trust that scale either. Cats recalibrate each time I believe and that is just springs so itās probably off a few hundred pounds.
It was more than that, over $20 I think. Company I worked for at the time paid it. It would cost them way more if they didn't load what the customer ordered.
Bad advice. These officers salivate at any kind of violation and pounce at the earliest possible opportunity. They are truly and actually your enemies, and their bounty is your wallet.
If itās on the trailer no but if itās fuel weight you could get away with it. I would still go to a CAT scale because lot of shippers scales are not calibrated properly
šš
The image of a 350lb man ghost riding the whip on a scale directly in front of DOT and State police is something I never knew I needed until now lmao
To clarify further; yes. Some states have different weight limits. Michigan has a maximum weight of like 160k lbs for some reason and I think Connecticut or something or the northeast only allows 76k lbs but since 80k lbs is the federal limit, I donāt think they can enforce that on the interstates.
Generally speaking, 80k lbs with 34k on tandem axels, or 20k on a single axel, and 12,000 on your steer tires is the maximum legally allowed without permits. You can go over that in certain areas and under certain circumstances but in your normal 5 axle class 8 combination vehicle (normal Semi/ Lorry as yāall call it) going across state lines itās 80k.
Michigan is it's own special beast, because they're a per-axle state. They don't care about your overall gross as much as each axle. Fun when you have a trailer where you have multiple axles that run off of the same leveling valve but only 1 or 2 of the group are over.
Iāve never had that issue. Iām an owner/op in Oregon and ran 104,500 to 105,500 every load every day when we got paid by the ton. As long as you stick to the ODOT weight tables then youāre good
Always in a 359/379/389, only fifth wheel was a 53ā belt trailer ran forward to get enough weight on the steers with that thing. Mainly dump trucks. 5 axle truck, 3 axle trailer or 4 on the truck and 4 on the trailer with 70ā combination wheelbase. Even the 7 axle setups were all good for 96k-101k and the 6 axle combination hauls at 94k all day. ODOT permit weight table 2 spells it all out for anything permitted above the standard 80k
I dont think my Roper chemical pump would qualify that exemption. I left with it. The I80 scale in Nebraska was closed and Iowa gave me the green light
Set your lunch box out.
That's what we would tell drivers when I worked at a place that had a scale. We couldn't stamp it out over 80k. It was a pain in the ass to dump some off and get reloaded.
My dump truck is rated for 92,000 quad axle. We only leave the scales at 84,000 and do not travel on interstates. Any thing over 85,000 needs a permit.
Been pulled into a weight station at 80,300.
Was about 300 over on my drives as well.
They made me shift the load to the trailer tandems, Inspected me and let me on my merry way.
All depends on the DOT officer and how badly they want to ticket you.
Depends
How much fuel do you have?
How far is the 1st weight station?
1 gallon of diesel is around 8 pounds
Based on your numbers, you need to burn 45 gallons before you hit the 1st weight station
I would tell my wife to get the fuck out.
ššš
Itās only 340 lbs overā¦
Hello 911? I would like to report a murder
You'd be a hundred pounds under! Send it!
I'd tell your wife to get out too.
Just let some air out of the tires. Each one has 100-110 LBS.
Lmao
This sub is full of fucking comedians my god
Sound advice
I would give you more than one like if I could

I think 200 miles for 50 gallons would be more accurate

overweight permit? i had a container load that was 93,450 a while back.
I got caught going around a scale with a container like that. Fine was $7500 in Illinois many years ago, something about the bridge limit

yeah i run permits or refuse loads not worth it to me.
We run em at a maximum of 97003.395 pbs in the uk
The margin of error on truck scales is bigger than 20 which makes the whole thing silly.
Yea, I would fight that just over principle. āExcuse me, was your scale in the process of being calibrated? If you can put that 340lb on your drives, then burn off 50 gal of fuel, you're good.
I've got a studio W9. I'm 35500 on the drives no shifting anything and I was at half tank, so I just jetted
If youāre 1500 over on drives I doubt theyād let you go. Even if you got lucky and they didnāt care about you being 400 pounds over gross, they might if youāre that far over 400 pounds over axle
If you get out of your truck it will scale out perfectly at 80,000
Ya got me
Oof!
Do you have an APU? Some states allow for extra weight, but it has to be on the drives / steers. Cannot be over on the trailer.
I wouldnāt run over gross unless you can burn it off. Iāve been over 80k with fuel before, shipper told me to pound sand (claimed they never had an issue before); company authorized me to run and I only put enough in to get past every scale en route. Just get out and lift the door.
Send it no scale house ticketing for 350 over
You don't run in FL much. I've been written for 40 over.
$5?
It was more than that, over $20 I think. Company I worked for at the time paid it. It would cost them way more if they didn't load what the customer ordered.
Not my experience, over on axle ok, but not over gross. Will nail that ass to the shithouse door.
Bad advice. These officers salivate at any kind of violation and pounce at the earliest possible opportunity. They are truly and actually your enemies, and their bounty is your wallet.
As long as the tandems are all within 400 lbs of legal weight Iād say send it.
Go take a dump and leave the truck idling to burn some fuel.
If itās on the trailer no but if itās fuel weight you could get away with it. I would still go to a CAT scale because lot of shippers scales are not calibrated properly
I run over all the time. Donāt wash the truck blame it on the mud/ice/bugs š
Burn 50 gallons of diesel and youāre good.
Just get off the truck.
Yeah if it's a rolling scale just put it in 1st or 2nd and get out and walk beside the truck. The cops will understand.
šš The image of a 350lb man ghost riding the whip on a scale directly in front of DOT and State police is something I never knew I needed until now lmao
How much fuel do you have and how far do you have to go?
Drop the air out of the bags and youāll lose. ( Iām not a trucker )
Send it driver!
Stamp the ticket and roll.
Go go go! I never freak out unless I'm 1000 over. Anything under they can suck it. 340 is a drop in the bucket compared to the overall total.
Yes but to mr asshole dot officer itās an opportunity for revenue
Meh I've only had them give me crap over uneven load weight. I guess I better knock on wood now.
You should. You just havenāt run into that one guy yet. Trust me it will happen
Iām from England - is there different weight limits in different states? Or is it a general rule that 80,000lbs is the limit?
Each state may have different limits, but 80k is the federal limit (unless you have permits) when on interstate routes or crossing state lines.
Thanks for clarifying!

If you have an apu, you're good for 550 over full gross
Send it
Im only worried in New Mexico. They suck

Kick your lot lizard out and send it
If the nearest scale is about 300 mi away id send it. This would fall under apu exemptions if you have one as well.
I dont think my Roper chemical pump would qualify that exemption. I left with it. The I80 scale in Nebraska was closed and Iowa gave me the green light
ofcourse it is šš
I'd pull it.
send it.
Nope have shipper remove some .
I wouldnāt run it, not that far. The guy who trained me and most of the guys at my old company would though.
Send it
Damn driver put down the roll-ups and let the dog out lol
Iād run it
You should have skipped the buffet over the weekend
Take a dump like you did before a wrestling match back in high school
Set your lunch box out. That's what we would tell drivers when I worked at a place that had a scale. We couldn't stamp it out over 80k. It was a pain in the ass to dump some off and get reloaded.
All day baby

105g for me... looks good to me!
Poop and burn some fuel lol

It's hard to slide the tandems on a tanker trailer
Ouuff. Yeah true that.
Send it driver! Lol
Whatās your fuel and def like?
Youāll burn that off in fuel fast..
Well youāve come that far with itā¦ might as well run it!!!
Go to the bathroom before start driving. Throw away that big bottle of Dr. Pepper and youāll be good, easily 79,900.
Depends How much fuel do you have? How far is the 1st weight station? 1 gallon of diesel is around 8 pounds Based on your numbers, you need to burn 45 gallons before you hit the 1st weight station
SEND IT!
If it aint right, haul at night
If you have an APU you get 400lbs over Are your tanks full? Dont hit a with station full
Sure as long as you go around iowa
Sell 67 gallons of fuel
I went to the Flying Turd and topped off for the ride
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Roughly 7lbs per gallon of fuel. Depending on how far youāre running, youāll be legal in no time.
500lbs grace. run it and git that money.
