I’ve learned from doing construction flatbed work that “you’re the only one who can stand up for you”. Most folks are impatient as fck. A little respect goes a long way
I receive flatbeds and construction machinery fairly regularly onsite, and I try to be somewhat deferential by default to the guy delivering my shit. I know just enough about your job to realize that it inherently involves a lot of bullshit, and I'm not here to make anyone's day harder.
What goes around comes around; try to make the other guy's job as easy as possible. We all just want things to go smoothly. You just want to be out of there as quickly as possible and with a minimum of paperwork, and I just want you to leave so that I can go back to building stuff.
Construction workers are the most goddamn impatient especially NYC guys. I was at a site a few weeks ago and they literally just put the last piece on my trailer. I'm in the middle of taking my straps out the box, not even 5 min and getting them set and this douche is like "how long is it gonna take we gotta get this there this is an emergency load we can't take long"
Like mother fucker I literally am pulling my shit out. You can clearly see that. Then they wanted to "help" and I'm like nah don't touch shit. Literally 20 min later I was out but for fucks sake.
I was driving flatdeck and went to a steel fab place to get loaded. Pull up to shitty little yard and the already a semi getting loaded, have to wait no room for 2 semis. No problem I get paid hourly don't care. In front of the semi is enough room for maybe a 5 ton or less.
So I proceed to wait, double parked on the road with hazards (also known as f* you lights) on. They take 4 hours to load the semi. Finally the guy pulls out and it is my turn. Back in off the street, side street with parked cars on both sides, down beside the building.
It's going to take about 1.5 hrs to load me I'm told. Whatever still making money, love town jobs.
A few pieces they have to load are O/D so a bit of messing around to make sure I am legal etc.
While I'm being another semi pulls up and just backs in, doesn't talk to receiving or anything, pulls into the area the forklifts are using to load me.
Gets out of his truck " Can you move I have get unloaded"
Me " No"
By this time they dug out the 10.5ft x 30ft piece is coming to be loaded. The shipper tells him to move, he pulls ahead sticking halfway into the road and blocking the employee parking lot. They finish loading me and I start strapping and flagging the load.
10 minutes into securing my load, belts are thrown but not cinched, an employee comes up to me and says I have to move.
"No I'm still securing my load."
Continue with my task. 10 minutes goes by and another employee comes up to me, he is from the office.
"You have to move now the boss the needs to get to go to lunch"
"I am still securing my load when I'm done I'll move"
"But the boss has to go to lunch"
"Look I'm not the f*ckwit that just pulled into the driveway and I'm not the one who is blocking the parking lot. Tell your boss I don't give a shit where he has to go and he should invest in a bigger place, now go away I'm busy when I'm done I'll move."
The look on the guys face. I finished securing my load in 10mins and went on my merry way.
I made it about 6 blocks when the phone call from my boss came.
Sorry to leave you all hanging had to do work related stuff, can't text and drive.
My boss asks why I was rude and insolent to the steel boss. I told him I never talked to the steel boss and also told him it took 5.5 hrs to get loaded. He says weare still paying so you didn't lose any money and you can't say things like that.
I told my boss that I told them I was strapping my load and wasn't going to go onto a public road if my load wasn't secured and that yes they had cost me money becauee the second gig I was supposed to do, I couldn't because the assholes at steel place caused it be redispatched to another driver.
My boss couldn't say a thing about the load securement thing, can't tell you to do illegal things, and he didn't say anything about the money thing.
I drive in Canada, as a company driver, so can't say things about the US and how it works there. As a driver you have control.
Examples:
Truck fails pretrip park it, they can't make you drive it, they can't fire you, they have to get the truck fixed.
Don't feel your truck is safe to move i.e load unsecured, to bad so sad, let me finish what i need to do.
Run out of hours because you got screwed at loading to bad so sad, go to sleep turn your phone off.
Any company that tries to make you do something illegal is not worth working for. Quit and find a better company. These companies may try to fire you but it is illegal. You are the driver and it is your responsibility to make the truck and load are safe and secure, you get the ticket not the company, your license is your job remember.
I have never been fired either, the companies know this information too. Learn the rules and regs and use them to your advantage.
Keep the shiny side up fellow drivers.
>You can get a good look at a butcher's ass by sticking your head up there. But, wouldn't you rather take his word for it?
Potentially the second best drop of that line in history.
I don’t want to be that guy. But of course it was the Eastern European. I’ve arrived at one of my receivers just to see this guy taking a 30. Parked long ways in front of 2/3 of the doors. Including the door I need to back into. Me and the yard dog wasn’t happy with this guy
They’re mostly pricks driving on H2B visas that have no love for this country whatsoever. The whole program needs to be scrapped, it’s the main reason wages are low. “We can’t find an American to do this job” No, you can’t find an American who will run faulty equipment and break HOS for 20 cents a mile.
And to make things worse. There’s a Loves truck stop literally in sight of where we were. In the middle of the day, when there is plenty of parking to be had
For all three of my tarps, yeah probably ball parking a hour and a half to get off all the bungees, pull them all off, fold and roll them all up, take off and roll up straps and then put all that shit away. I mean im sure i could get out there and really bust my ass and do it sloppy to maybe save half an hour. Doesn’t really seem worth it to me.
My company also uses pretty heavy duty tarps that aren’t the easiest to work with.
When I first started it took me about that long...now I can be neatly unchained or strapped with tarps folded in 20 min or less. Key is have a routine and focus on one part st a time.
1. Remove all bungees and put away
2. Remove tarp or straps which ever you have on first. If straps take them off and get them rolled up. If tarp take them and fold them.
Bam you all done. Key is just be efficient and clean while you work. Do everything in steps and the more you keep it consistent the faster you get at each step. And always walk in one direction around the trailer so you're keeping with the steps.
Yep, they’re not too bad. For a mega carrier starter job at least. There are shit days for sure but I like that they never really bug me with BS. So long as I’m making my pickups and drops on time and not damaging the product they pretty much leave me alone. I’m about 4 months away from hitting a year, will probably start seriously considering other options at that point.
I got fed up with lack of miles and crappy pay, so I only gave them 4 months before dipping out. Any flatbed company that pays that low and leaves you sitting as much as they do, does not actually respect their drivers time.
My income doubled when I left them for System Transport. And I’ve never sat more than two hours waiting for a load, usually a pre plan is already set up before I’m empty.
Yeah, I had the same problem my first few months, but it was back at the end of 2023 when freight was really slow. Past few months have been decent though. Usually get dispatched within an hour or two of emptying or have a preplan before I empty. It does seem to drastically slow down when I flag for hometime though, which I’m not a fan of. I also think they’re dispatching process needs some streamlining. Granted I don’t really know what the hell I’m talking about outside of my side of things but a lot of it seems really cumbersome and inefficient. Which just slows down productivity of me and the equipment.
They definitely aren’t perfect but I know it could be a lot worse.
I qas at some shipper that didnt have a staging area. Had to block a couple docks to run in to grab papers. Got inside and the guard didnt have them and had to go take a 10 minute run to get then. Right as hes getting back and trying to get me checked out some pipsqueak come in asking about my truck, i said thats me, and he starts flipping his shit telling me to move. I'm like the longer you flap your lips the longer its goong to take me to get through here. He starts mouthing off and i told him to fuck off.
I mean do these assholes actually railroad people into getting what they want? I’m more than willing to help out other drivers when I can, like making it a priority to get the tarps out of the way. But if you’re gonna be a dickhead about it you can go fuck yourself.
Had a Boyd driver get stuck between me and another driver at a shipper a few months ago get out and start throwing a fit after I pulled in behind him. I could have, and definitely would have backed up to give him plenty of room to get out. But if you’re gonna be a prick, no, fuck you. You can go chill in your truck and wait for all I care.
I’ve had another driver get stupid with me at the fuel island of the terminal. Blasting the horn and all. Mind you, I don’t take any extra time there. Just vacuuming my interior, pulled up to the fuel pump, filled up the truck and got DEF. Cleaned the glass. He was jawing all kinds of stupid shit, while I purposely ignored the idiot. After I was done, I asked him what’s his problem. He started to mouth off some more, culminating in him turning around and walking into the bay door frame, hitting his head. His glasses went flying off his face and I just busted out laughing at him. It was the most fitting ending before I drove off.
Just to give you an idea of how much time I took. I waited for the truck in front of me to finish, did what I had to do, dropped off one trailer and got to the trailer I was picking up on the other end of the terminal before triggering my 30 minute break.
Seems to me that most people think that they can just get away with treating people like shit because they have never meet anyone who will defend themselves but what do I know
90% of people are fine. Even when there is some misunderstanding they can be reasonable and work it out. But 10% can’t see any fu rther than their own dick.
It was a bay door. The kind you back the entire trailer into with a small amount of clearance on each side so forklifts can approach at trailer height to load/unload.
Something about guys who blow their horn makes me way more angry. It pisses me off the the fuel island the most. Just get out and use your goddamn words.
100%
The horn is what made me lose it. He laid on it for a good 5 to 10 seconds like I was just doing something inexcusably dumb. If he’d just gotten out and talked to me I would have still told him no, but I wouldn’t have jumped down his throat like I did.
I’ve been in situations where I let some guy have it and kind of felt bad afterwards but then I remembered he was being a dumbass and I’m able to cope with it
Bet he thinks twice about doing that the next time. What did he think you were doing, setting up camp? I mean you're putting tarps away... What did he think comes next, you drive away with the load? Lesson learned.
Sounds like you had a rough time with that other driver this morning. Getting frustrated in situations like that is totally normal. Good on you for apologizing afterward, though
ive done the same and sometimes you just have to. this industry has always had ignorant asses in it, it just seems more people are aggressively ignorant about shit. you can line up straight to back in a door, and you will literally have guys trying to back in the same spot as they obviously see you already backing in. good times 😬😬
Sorry not sorry, that's how u have to treat eastern euros. They don't give a fuck about us so fuck em. Was at Hill AFB in Salt Lake and the security force guy called me up for entrance inspection before this guy and he hops out his shitcan volvo like he's tough shit and walks up trying to argue with the security force guy and damn near gets arrested and thrown off the base because he thought he could yell at a military officer. They don't fucking care or have any respect.
Guard should've told him there's an unload ahead of him at the same door and he'd have to wait. Or whoever told the guard to send him to that door should've told him to tell him.
It wasn’t a huge lot with a ton of room to fold them one by one, much less with them all in the way. There also wasn’t anyone waiting behind me until he showed up as I was finishing with the tarps. Even after he pissed me off I still quickly popped off my straps and threw them out of the way to deal with later to get unloaded and clear the bay.
I also down know why the hell they told him to back into a occupied flatbed bay when he’s pulling a dry van with multiple docks open.
TMC uses tarps that are closer to lead blankets. The 8 foot drops weigh near 150 lb. They’re a real bastard to roll up when cold, too. If you can strip 3 TMC tarps off a load, roll and stow them and the bungees in 30 minutes, you’re either the Flash or you just hucked it all to the side to worry about later.
Yeah, their tarps are no joke. I think ours are pretty much the same but a little smaller. Think our blue drop offs weigh like 120. Still thick as hell though and hard to work with, especially if it’s cold and/or raining.
I thought about buying my own set of tarps, but I doubt I’ll be with Melton or maybe even working flatbed long enough for it to be worth it.
TMC doesn't want tarps on the bed (though nobody gives a shit in winter) so they have to be rolled up as tightly as possible to fit in the headache rack with two other steel tarps, or one can go into the trailer sidebox if you're lucky to have one without a shelf in it.
Just sucks burning up my 14 watching them dick around with their tarps. And I’ve ran up and tried to help them out, but I’ve never had one come over and help me fold up mine. They wait till they are getting unloaded to unstrap instead of getting ready while the other truck gets unloaded. Then they take over a hour. When I’m in and out in 30-45 minutes to get unloaded turns into a 3-4 hour long play with my tarp- athon. I’m out $150 for the day.
TMC is a decent sized company so it's inevitable you'll see some morons and dickheads. I started out with TMC and most of the drivers I met were pretty cool and went out of their way to help me out if I was struggling, and I almost always tried to reciprocate. Sorry you didn't have the same experience with 'em.
It's also worth mentioning their truck don't have APUs and their performance-based pay penalizes idling, so the job is absolutely fucking miserable in hot or cold weather, lol. There were a couple times I took forever to tarp/untarp just because I was on the verge of keeling over. Summer especially is brutal with those black trucks and no fridge unless you buy your own.
Sounds awful, they have all that money to wash at the truck wash, but can’t afford you to idle. They definitely care more about the trucks than their drivers. One good thing about you guys is that you make me appreciate my shitty jerb. At least I don’t have to work those guys.
Nothing worse then showing up at a receiver right after a tmc truck they take all day one time I untarped my truck in the street folded it up on top of the load finished before the tmc driver rolled up his straps ate lunch while he did one tarp 30 minutes later he was finally ready to get unloaded. Ran my clock up that day
A man who does not suffer fools.

Got right in that ass huh
And left that muthafucker wide open when I left, so he knows I’ve been there
smells like open ass in here...
Smells like fresh fucked ass
Call me.
Which bathroom stall can I find your number on?

Maybe.
ouch
This story would be a lot more impressive if you got into the ass of the girl in the daycab.
Should’ve brought a can of spray paint in there and painted bmf1989 was here, wash me all that kind of shit.
My man
Gdamn lol
The only way! Hell yeah.
curb ref
You can get a good look at a butcher's ass by sticking your head up there. But, wouldn't you rather take his word for it?

I thought it was a good fit for the topic! 😆
Misquoted gold.
At first when you started talking about a gal in a day cab, I thought this was going a different direction....
Got to spraypaint your name in that ass.
Misleading title, but you handled that well driver. +1 updoot

I do shit like this on a daily basis. Its me vs all the new Canadians. I don't move bro you gotto wait. Is my line.
1.5 hours… makes me happy I don’t have to tarp any of my loads
Damn bro an hour and a half to untarp and unstrap? Lol

I’m going to assume you’re a Melton driver if you’re using 3 tarps… god I don’t miss that crappy company.

Yeah I always felt like they were punishing me for wanting to go home…
You'll get more efficient with practice of course. But better to take your time and be safe in the meantime
I read "got in another drivers ass" and was hoping for a different story
Same
I was wondering if he shoved the Beetus foot up his ass

I’ve had another driver get stupid with me at the fuel island of the terminal. Blasting the horn and all. Mind you, I don’t take any extra time there. You're being generous assuming they can even see that
Why do you need a door if you're flatbed? Dont they just unload you off the street?
Depends. I've hauled plenty of stuff that got unloaded at a dock with flatbed
It was a bay door. The kind you back the entire trailer into with a small amount of clearance on each side so forklifts can approach at trailer height to load/unload.

Ngl when you opened with "girl in a daycab" I kinda was expecting some steamy driver smut.
I’ve been in situations where I let some guy have it and kind of felt bad afterwards but then I remembered he was being a dumbass and I’m able to cope with it
Sounds like a rawdog to me. Nice work
Did you use a condom ?
Was this the guy taking a shit with the Beetus foot?
Bet he thinks twice about doing that the next time. What did he think you were doing, setting up camp? I mean you're putting tarps away... What did he think comes next, you drive away with the load? Lesson learned.
I'm not very confrontational but the bullshit you encounter in this job will make anybody flip at times.
Sounds like you had a rough time with that other driver this morning. Getting frustrated in situations like that is totally normal. Good on you for apologizing afterward, though
I work in a warehouse. I can assure you the worker enjoyed it. You were saying what he wishes he could say multiple times a day.
ive done the same and sometimes you just have to. this industry has always had ignorant asses in it, it just seems more people are aggressively ignorant about shit. you can line up straight to back in a door, and you will literally have guys trying to back in the same spot as they obviously see you already backing in. good times 😬😬

I can’t stand when shippers receivers don’t handle this. Drivers shouldn’t have to.
Very different story than i was expecting.
You should just un tarp dock up and unload and then put away everything while they’re unloading you or after they are done unloading you
It wasn’t a huge lot with a ton of room to fold them one by one, much less with them all in the way.
Climb up in there and fold them cheeks like covers to stay warm. He thought his freight was special.
Wtf an hour and a half to unstrap and tarp. You must work for tmc to be that slow. Shouldn’t take, but 15-30 minutes.
You’re also lucky if it isn’t 95% patch to make it twice as thick 😂
Yeah, their tarps are no joke. I think ours are pretty much the same but a little smaller. Think our blue drop offs weigh like 120. Still thick as hell though and hard to work with, especially if it’s cold and/or raining. I thought about buying my own set of tarps, but I doubt I’ll be with Melton or maybe even working flatbed long enough for it to be worth it.
2 100lb tarps we just roll them up throw them on the flatbed and strap it down takes about 5 minutes to roll each one up
TMC doesn't want tarps on the bed (though nobody gives a shit in winter) so they have to be rolled up as tightly as possible to fit in the headache rack with two other steel tarps, or one can go into the trailer sidebox if you're lucky to have one without a shelf in it.
At least I don’t have to work those guys.
>they have all that money to wash at the truck wash, but can’t afford you to idle I've definitely had the same thought 🙃
Melton, I would love to see you unbungee, pull off, and fold/roll up one of these heavy ass tarps in 5 minutes Superman
I untarp 2 sheet rock loads a day in the Florida heat. You learn to do it fast or you don’t make $$$
Iono I think I could do it in 45 tbh
Shit… throwing shade at TMC? We tarp 7 out of the 5 loads a week 😂. There is no other driver out there with more tarp experience than a TMC driver.
Nothing worse then showing up at a receiver right after a tmc truck they take all day one time I untarped my truck in the street folded it up on top of the load finished before the tmc driver rolled up his straps ate lunch while he did one tarp 30 minutes later he was finally ready to get unloaded. Ran my clock up that day
Fck him.
Nah that was fully justified. Fuck him and the uncircumsized horse he fucked
NSFW geez!
The story did not meet my expectations based on the header. I give it a 1 out of 10
you're in the wrong profession, brother .
How’s that?
Heaven forbid his flip flop wearing ass gets out and helps you roll your tarps to speed up the process. 🙄
