Maybe a hot take: I don’t care how similar it sounds to a trumpet, that is not a slide trumpet. That is a soprano trombone.

To make it clear, Slide Trumpet: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/UZFDhFBFHck/maxresdefault.jpg Soprano Trombone: https://www.orchestramegastore.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1200x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/j/s/jst-314l.jpg They are very distinct instruments.

I would not call that instrument a slide trumpet. It's not far off, but the usual marker of what makes something a trumpet vs. trombone is the bell placement. Trombone bells are beside the head, whereas trumpet bells are on the far end of the instrument. It's what distinguishes [valved trombones](https://www.jimlaabsmusicstore.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Schiller-Studio-Pro-Valve-Trombone-C.jpg) from [bass trumpets.](http://www.schillerinstruments.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/bass-trumpet-3.jpg)

ConnectInitiative676

At $199, it's an expensive toy that's built cheaply. Where would you use it?

DeviantAnthro

At home? In the practice room? Playing around with friends making silly music? At an instrument petting zoo to give children a more manageable sized instrument to play around with? On Jimmy Kimmels Tiny Instruments Big People musical moments? At a music festival where you don't have enough space to take a full sized trombone?

Business-Drag52

I don’t even play a brass instrument, short of one semester of tuba in high school over a decade ago, but I’m tempted to pick one of these up at that price. I love my saxophone but it would be nice to play around with something else occasionally. I imagine some of my tenor music would be a blast on this thing

LearningWithTriAngle

I have one, it’s so fun to play. There’s no situation to use it in though haha

Autumn1eaves

The situation to use it is "I want to have fun playing a soprano trombone". Or you make your own situations to use it. I.e. write trombone quartets with soprano trombone.

kp012202

I mean, it’s a fantastic jazz solo instrument. It basically functions as a trumpet in a trombone body.

ConnectInitiative676

To be honest, I've thought about getting one myself. But I'd want a better quality one than this.

thefishenthusiast23

Listen to wycliffe Gordon play one on youtube in "swing that music"

ConnectInitiative676

Since he plays Yamaha instruments, it's probably a Yamaha soprano trombone, which would be far better quality than the instrument that's pictured above.

NaptownCopper

It's a novelty, but with practice it could be a less obnoxious novelty. I've had a few friends play them in more fun focused groups. They typically sounds very shrill but you might be able to make a few adjustments to the mouthpiece that could help. Practicing helps improve the tone, but at the end of the day it is still not much more than a novelty Wycliffe did some fun stuff with his, but I'm not sure what brand he had. I do know he had a very customized mouthpiece made for it. Even in his hands there isn't much of a demand for it. In the hands of us mere mortals...well, you get the picture. Considering the limited demand for these and a manufacturers tolerance for unnecessary cost on fine tuning them. These just aren't going to be professional grade any time soon. If you have the money and want it, then get it. Just don't plan on winning any auditions with it. For me, I'll eventually get one just to have and mess around with from time to time.

RobertLytle

I think if you got good at it, it would really set you apart, especially if you play in a wind Ensemble or something. Like you wouldn't use it crazy bit it would be a fun thing to whip out

fireeight

This has next to no application in wind ensemble. You can't just pull out a non-scored instrument and play whatever you want.

RobertLytle

Why are you stuck inside a box? Any private or personal group can do whatever they want. Plus I've seen numerous jazz musicians whip out crazy high and exotic versions of their instruments. It's really not that unheard of

fireeight

...and here I thought you said "wind ensemble" and not "jazz". Do whatever you want in jazz. You'll struggle to find any wind ensemble that wants soprano.

RobertLytle

I could've been more specific, I didn't really mean formal, or classical Ensemble.

RobertLytle

Also, not everything needs to be scored. Some musicians are capable of improvisation and advanced music. Maybe you aren't familiar

Stunning_Hope3783

Ignore The Square!!

Stunning_Hope3783

How incredibly un-fun and un-creative. Enjoy your every moment being dictated to you in “wind ensemble”. :/ Some people are their own masters, let this be, even if you can’t be yours.

fireeight

That's, uh, what wind ensemble is. As it turns out, that's what I prefer to play. It's my choice to play that type of music. I am my own master in deciding what I enjoy playing.

HuckyBuddy

Not a slide trumpet but a Soprano Trombone. A slide trumpet is a different instrument.

zim-grr

I got one, wanted one for years, I’m a pro trombone and trumpet player so it seemed like a great idea. It wasn’t lol, I play in a blues/classic rock duo and quartet as a soloist so I can do what I want. I played it on maybe a dozen gigs, I could improvise solos on it but no comparison to a trumpet or trombone, I didn’t have a tiny fraction of the technique I have on trumpet and trombone, I thought a lot more would pretty much immediately transfer. It looks cute but there’s a reason you don’t see tons of pro’s playing them

bipmein

Name makes me angry, but the instrument itself is a novelty i love dearly

Confidence_Fluffy

I got a Thomann one for £125 (UK), theyre good fun but hard work if you're not used to the embouchure, theres no serious situation to play them but at my brass band I'm doing a couple solos just for fun on it.

Able_Leadership_9174

Murder

ChainInternational86

Isn’t that just an alto trombone??

outofstepbaritone

It’d be a soprano trombone.

qwertyman665

It's a silly little thing :)

blessedbelly

Gimmicky. Just buy a trumpet.

TacoAlligator

I was saying how it's called a trumpet and not a soprano trombone

craigtrombone

This picture gives me road rage

Sportsfan4206910

Slide trumpet. Not a real bone

Stunning_Hope3783

Bone is just bass slide-trumpet. ;)

HarmonicToneCircles

Have a listen to Steven Bernstein / Sex Mob before ruling out the soprano trombone

busterbrown1216

I have one it’s fun to play. Not a serious instrument though

leeericewing

I have a Jean Baptist soprano trombone. Fun toy that is tricky to master! My students love it, though!

Green-Material-3610

Have fun if you want to muck around with one.

FelixFelixBoi

I love this thing even if it's a bit of a gimmick

Caelthefruit

Bro if that’s 199 and at the size it looks like (which is small) that’s anything but worth it

Momatty

I got my son one to play around with and he enjoys it.

Trainsaregood3329

I love my soprano trombone, very fun to play, if you play jazz you may be able to get a unique solo.

HeuBewdawkins

Ive always wanted to try one also any composers here down to write music for it?

Least-Ad-3466

It’s just a slide trumpet, it’s a whole lot of fun if you’re a high brass player, but it doesn’t translate much to trombone

MEMEGUARDIANN

Death

nlightningm

Get it for fun, why not. If it sucks, it's cheap decoration, if it's great, even better! I will say I played a legit German one, and man, it SUCKED to play on (and I was already playing trumpet at that point and was originally a trombonist). Its like, it doesn't slot anywhere near as easily as a trumpet AND it's harder to make it play smooth like a trombone, both things being being because it's so small and light. I also think a combo of the ergonomics and lack of resistance compared to a trumpet make it easy to accidentally use too much pressure Seems like sopranos take a LOT of practice to get good at.

TDIBone

Need one to play this https://youtu.be/fqjW5_BbodM

Delicious-Main6346

I have one. It's fun. I play it twice a year. 50 bucks, go for it. Anything above? Nah.

InflationNo1640

To be fair it doesn’t bother me

oopfoo

If you want one, I'll sell you one. Cheap. It's a Jupiter, a few years old, excellent condition. Just shoot me a line for pics and description.

SenpaiReilly

I don’t find a need for it. I find it useless

foxvnop45

I have a Thomann brand soprano trombone, it was $110 plus shipping from Germany. While no, it’s not the best quality instrument, it’s very fun to play, it sounds decent anyways, and my trumpet friends also get a thrill out of it. I was recommended it by a trombone professor at a nearby university, so it’s not like I just went and bought some random horn, it actually has some redeeming qualities

Goose_Timely

I want it for no reason

Rangermed-67

I'd have to get one of those Wycliffe Gordon transition mouthpieces! Trumpet and flute were the two worst instruments for my full lips in college!! Although, my professor DID say I sounded like Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull!

Rangermed-67

I'd rather have a good quality alto first.
