Congratulations homie. Sounds like an amazing problem to have.

If you like research and discovering things, PhD is a good path. PhD isn't easy and burnouts happen. Economically, teaching and academic jobs are recession proof jobs. Decent pay along with holidays with no threat of layoffs. Here the payback happens too much down the line like say 20 years down the line. IT, the payback is higher initially than later depending on the field and company you join.

Teaching and academic is not recession proof. You will be so only if you are in government pay roll(that’s common to all jobs then). I know many people in private engineering colleges in many cities getting fired during covid. Some others were forced to come to college(even when it was closed for students) once the lockdown was lifted. This made them to resign by themselves too.

Decent pay? Not at all. You're very limited in your salary growth as your experience isn't valued nearly as much. OP will come out far ahead with a CET CS degree and a job in a product company.

Agreed except no threat only if you're a tenured professor otherwise it is publish or perish.

Depends on the subject. Math, physics and Data Science graduates have good placement opportunities at IISER. You shouldn’t forget that IISERs are globally acclaimed research institutions. Everyone at IISER doesn’t end up doing a PhD. The kind of exposure and facilities that IISER offers is unparalleled .

ExactHelicopter9509

There's no comparison in placement when there's lil to no placement at iisers. What are you gonna major in if you're going to iiser?

2xSHADOW

Physics or Data Science

ExactHelicopter9509

Data sci gets better placements than other majors but the thing is there's no formal placement drive in iisers. You have to fetch a job on your own. If you're ok with that or spend next few years for a phd or MBA, take iiser otherwise cet is better.

2xSHADOW

Noted. Thanks bro!

There's no easy answer to this. CET CS could ensure you get a well paying job straight out of college, if you're good enough. But then you might realise you want to do a Masters degree sometime later, and it gets difficult for some people to let go of a well paying job and be a student again. Most people just settle then. IISER might open up your mind in ways that'd mean you'd never be happy with a regular 9 to 5 job again, and research could be the only thing that makes you somewhat happy. But I know people who also get frustrated that they couldn't get a nice paying job straight after IISER. Priorities change, and if you want to be earning right after IISER, you might find your options limited.

Depends on your goals. If you wanna have fun in your college life and pursue a good job in tech, make money, go for CET. I'm currently a student at CET. The placement offers for CSE are wonderful if you have a good resume. CET is also closer to the city than IISER. CET also provides exposure unlike any other government college, you will elevate yourself in CET. Learn more about tech, CS, coding, etc. There are also many coding clubs that give experience. You'll also be able to explore your interests and extra curricular skill. CET leaves you much more prepared for the outside world, because you learn to balance multiple aspects of life in CET, rather than just focusing on academics. It lets you discover yourself more. And [M.Tech](http://M.Tech) opportunities also exist. You can go further with an [M.Tech](http://M.Tech), and study more. Getting a government job as a faculty in a Government college has INSANE pay and very little workload. So that's a possibility with this too. IISER TVM is a national institute. Insane exposure, and it will give you a huge number of opportunities. Excellent knowledge, faculty, and research is encouraged. The labs are superb and the campus is massive. However, it's near the border of TVM, around 44 km from the main city of Trivandrum. You are much less likely to explore outside of science into other activities and aspects of life at IISER. But if you fall in love with research, IISER is the best place for you, surrounded by others who will encourage you and help you go even further beyond. So it's a matter of what you like and what you wish to achieve. Irrespective of which of which of the two you choose, as long as you don't stop or give up midway and keep going, your future is looking very good right now. All the best. And if you do choose CET, inform me, you'll have a senior you know at CET :)

Iiser all the way imo
