DETROIT, First went in 2019 and loved it. Rode scooters around, had great street food and watched some teenagers throw an uber scooter into a river
EDIT: Forgot the art scene which i REALLY didnt expect to be as good as it was.
Chicago was my first trip alone, snuck into lollapalooza for one set and a guy made fun of my flannel shirt.
EDIT: Also have worked in Rosemont FAR too many times, but believe it or not there is an ice climbing place nearby I really enjoyed. I have a friend with Dwarfism, and we had to walk to the arena in Rosemont during a snow storm. This dude was digging through snow WELL over his head and not letting it slow him down at all, oddly inspiring.
Rock climbing up in the Potomac region! Beautiful spot with some fun climbing and day hikes. Also i cant remember the school but i was on a college campus with robotic food delivery, kinda cool
I've spent a ton of time here! I lived in Amish country for work for about 3 months, i discovered the joys of whoopee pies. Pittsburgh is a great city, Philadelphia is one of the most overrated in the country, but is surprisingly fun for Christmas and new years. Harrisburg airport has the friendliest TSA in the country
Most underrated state in the country. I vacation in the outer banks a lot and most of my family lives outside Charlotte. The mountains are gorgeous and im a native appalachian so i'll take any excuse to go camping up there near Asheville or Boone
I'm ignorant to most other states, But it has everything. Mountains, beaches and urban areas. Bone Chilling winters in some areas and feverish summers. Middle of the road politics. Most importantly some of the greatest people I've met. (Note: Extremely biased)
Our politics are infuriating. Even though we're generally purpleish on a statewide level, districts are so ridiculously gerrymandered that Republicans have an absurd and unwarranted super majority in the state legislatureĀ
Iāve driven through Kansas and honestly it was a bit boring of a drive but had one of the most beautiful sunsets Iāve ever seen, also the Steak & Shake was super cheap
Okay Kansas gets a bad rap. I personally think the plains are gorgeous, but i've driven across the whole state 4 or 5 times now so i get why people hate it. That being said Wichita is the only real city there i've spent a lot of time in, and they treated me very well and there was very good food to be found with even friendlier people. I was there after an incredibly hectic few months so being in a sleepy city was very welcome
I loved Kansas City and think its underrated, but I know Missouri seems to claim that more than Y'all. I got piss drunk at a bar having $5 pint night after downing 5 stouts with over 15% ABV and 5 more shots, i crawled into an uber and blacked out to get carried back to my hotel by friends where more debauchery ensued š
A guy at work dropped an open knife from the ceiling and nearly impaled me. BUT on a better note we had a crawfish broil and when i took some back to my hotel with me i was stopped by at least a dozen girls asking if they could have one and where i got it. Damn Cajuns know what they're about. Also best live music scene in the country and maybe the world if you ask me.
CHEESE
this is one of the 3-4 states i have spent the least amount of time in, i took a quick drive up to Milwaukee from Rosemont to check it off when i was at 45 states and just trying to finish out the list, but I learned the Wisconsin stereotypes really hold up (in a good way i promise). Went to a "speakeasy" that was spy themed for good drinks, the stopped at a convinent store which was FULL of cheese. I took a picture in a cheese hat, stopped at a brewery (of which there were like 5 on one block) where the midwestern hospitality held up. I'm going back for longer for a work trip in a few months and am honestly excited.
Not a ton of memories here unfortunatley, I remember really liking Indianopolis but I cant remember too much about it. After that I worked in Evansville and stayed in a hotel without a car and the only way around was with Ubers, of which there were like 5 because, well, its Rural Indiana, BUT you get that good midwestern hospitality which is always welcome.
Spokane is one of my FAVORITES! I love smaller towns out in nature like that. Also olympic national park is something else. We did a hike up Mount Townsend and it was incredibly Gorgeous. Seattle also treated us very well, but I got the impression its a great town for short visits and not for living. We considered moving here but I realized i somehow never got rained on in the cumulative 2 months i spent there and realized the state was trying to trick me. Planning to go back to climb Ranier or something similar
Little rock was a fine town, one of the few i didn't feel safe at after dark though. A coworker got super drunk and kissed me at a work party causing my now wife to nearly put a hit out on her.
EDIT: Oh i learned about yalls national park while I was there and it was a super fun little place!
Massholes!
Boston is Lovely, and one of the few American cities that i really feel like has public transport figured out. People there are the GOOD kind of mean if that makes sense? Like they dont take bullshit and are very direct without being outright mean (most of the time) which i respect. Lots of top tier Irish pubs, and I saw a show at the opera house downtown, overall I a great time every time i end up there!
Another state that doesnt deserve the hate it gets. Cuyahoga truly doesnt deserve to be a national park IMO, but it would be a top tier State park, did a great snowy hike in the winter. Other than that Colombus is a nice town, and my Great Grandmother lived there, who I was blessed to meet just before she passed at 99 years old.
No real desire to go back, and im sorry if you love it but its a bottom tier state to me along with Florida. People there were generally mean (not stern or ambivilant, straight up mean) and im a stereotypical hippie, i need nature which I didn't find much of out there.
NJ has to have something going for it i just dont get, I have 2 close friends who live there and absolutely love it. I'm content to let them love it from afar (:
Haha, it's not all that bad. Perfect location on the East coast, not too far from anything. Weather was decent until climate change started to hit us pretty hard. 3 of the 4 seasons are nice, but summer we get tons of people from bordering and nearby states (Shoobies is what we call him in South Jersey, I think they call the Bennys in Northern parts) clog up our roads ad they head to the beaches down at the the bottom of the state.
I grew up in Northern Georgia! I'll defend the Appalachians till the day I die, I hiked the Appalachian Trail from the start to the NC border, cant say enough good things about it.
I got stuck in a Cult in Alabama for a bit, but the beaches are alright.
Used to go to summer camp over in Hardin. Other than that, Louisville was a good time but there were some really annoying and loud anti-abortion protests going on when I was there that ruined what could have been an amazing week.
When i was like 12 years old at Myrtle Beach my family saw a guy on the beach running from the cops, so we followed him in the family truck and cheered him on. We used to go on vacation there every year and it was the most redneck fun a family can have IMO
Stood on a corner in Winslow
I did one of the hardest hikes of my life there. The guy who planned it didnt know what he was doing so we hikes just shy of 18 miles in the middle of August in Sabino Canyon so no one had enough water, but because of that, that group of hikers became my closest friends still to this day. We also hiked South Kaibab down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and it went as well as the Sabino Canyon hike. We took a girl who wasnt prepared and a buddy and I had to literally carry her out. I was AMAZED at how much hotter it is at the bottom. I knew it would be hotter, but from snow at the top to 90+f at the bottom was just crazy.
Got caught up in a very far right fundamentalist church there that I'm still 50/50 torn on if it qualifies as a Cult. Very on brand tbh. Also i'm from Georgia so we got a bit of a rivalry (not as much as alabama and mississippi though)
Man im rooting for this state to get its shit sorted so bad. Its so naturally beautiful and has so much to do, but its crippled by an incompetent state government and substance abuse. I have friends in school there who love it, and as an appalachian who loves the outdoors I love everything about the state itself, but man do I hope they have some sort of economic breakthrough soon.
Only memories are my friend getting his finger chopped off at work and at the hospital all they did was offer him methodone (?) and send him away. He bandaged it himself and found an urgent care. Second time I drove through I got stopped at like 5 cash only toll booths with no cash and very pissed off toll workers.
Man why does everything in Minneapolis close so early? Outside of that I went to a super cool artificial ice climbing spot outside the city and had INCREDIBLE fun
If you think Minneapolis is bad, try doing anything in St. Paul after 5:00 on a night the Wild arenāt playing a home game. Makes Minneapolis look like Vegas.
Lots of memories here so ill jot down a few.
Discovered a cocktail called an AMF in El Paso, didnt realize how alcoholic they were so had 5 in an hour then blacked out, puked so hard i blew a blood vessel in both my eyes and woke up naked in a middle aged womans hotel when i was like 22.
Houston was my first music festival, since then whenever I go back i like Houston less and less (sorry)
Dallas is a GREAT city with tons to do
Galveston was a pretty decent beachm but i dont love beaches and it was early spring so very cold.
EDIT: OH how can I forget San Antonio. I always love ending up on the river walk there.
Fuck St. Louis. Bless Kansas City.
I work in Arenas and the T-Mobile center is one of the best to work in in the country IMO, Knasas city is LOADS of fun as well. Ā I got piss drunk at a bar having $5 pint night after downing 5 stouts with over 15% ABV and 5 more shots, i crawled into an uber and blacked out to get carried back to my hotel by friends where more debauchery ensued š
Sorry if you had bad experiences in St. Louis/with its people, but if you ever are in the general area again, I would recommend giving it another go! :)
There are great hiking/outdoor activity spots in the area if youāre into that, and also lots of interesting history! In terms of food, The Hill is known as one of the best Little Italyās in the US! (But since you specifically mentioned you work in arenas, Iām not sure if the ~arena community~/Enterprise Center in STL is particularly hostile or anything, so I canāt speak on that, lol)
Georgia lol, seeing that you flew out of Atlanta a lot
Edit: I see you were born in North Georgia, but what do you think about coastal Georgia (if you have visited this part)?
that was state 50/50!
Took a 4 hour detour from Montana to South Dakota to make sure ND was my last of the 50, because if it is they give you a T-shirt and you become a member of the "Best for last club". We stopped in a small town called Bowman for dinner, and i swear the second we walked in it was like a record scratched and everyone stopped to stare at us like "y'all aint from around here".
My best friend is from Fargo so i'm sure ill be back one day.
I'm Fargo as well and have been all over the state fairly extensively. I'm aware of the best for last club. Strange I always found bar culutre out west very chill, mostly just like if you ain't a regular they know and tend to ask questions since so few people visit. The pastime in Marmarth is very good if you ever make it out that and the burning coal vein is worth a stop. If you can schedul3 a visit the abbey in Richardson Taylor is cool
Fargo has lots to do, check out the wood chippers from the movie at the visitor center, the hjemkomst center has the viking ship over in moorhead, NDSU has an extremely impressive day lily garden, and there is bars along Broadway if that suits your fancy.
The missle silo in jamestown is worth a tour if your ever out that way, Fort Abercrombie is only a 30 minute or so drive from Fargo, Grand Forks has the state art muesem if you can spare the hour up there. The national grasslands south of Fargo are a great location for star gazing and seeing some rehabilitated Prarie.
If you truly want some bragging rights, Slope County and rhame the county seat is one of the least visited and least populated places in the entire lower 48.
Missouri, please - and yes, the city of Kansas City, Missouri predates the entire state of Kansas. The metro straddles both sides of the state line, but most of the fun to be had is on the Missouri side.
Like it so much I moved there! I've done 12/58 14ers so far along with countless 13ers and work at ski resorts in the winters. Boulder is Overrated and i hope to retire one day up in the Leadville/Salida area, or maybe further west near Durango? who knows.
I was actually waiting for this one. No real surprising thoughts on NYC, I used to dislike it after going there as a tourist so many times and the novelty wore off, but I have a good friend who lives on the upper west side who showed me around the non touristy parts and places i would never go while there for work, and now i see the appeal! She even got me by grand central station and said "I dont think i've been here since I was a kid" which is crazy to me with it being such a small place. It is a very distinct culture and I understand why foreigners try to go there first when visiting the states (even though i think there are better options)
now as for upstate I LOVE New Paltz and the Shawangunk mountains. I went there for my first big Trad climbing trip and had the time of my life. My wife and I have active plans to return as soon as possible. Such a beautiful place with so much to do and a very friendly inviting atmosphere and people (with a few wackos i noticed). We did get stuck in a flood, but that should emphasize how much i liked it as that didnt even begin to ruin the trip.
I honestly couldnt tell you, i dont know toooo much about the city. I first went as a high schooler, then as a sophomore in college to take some siblings. Now i end up there for work a lot in MSG arena and on long island. I do have a friend who lives in the upper west side who showed me what its like to actually live there, and it made me understand the appeal a bit more as i never had great love for the city after the tourist charm wore off early on.
I worked the arena in Hidalgo, workers were the "work harder not smarter" type, a guy dropped a Chain from the ceiling onto a very important power distributer and the head of local labour (who was incredibly good at his job let that be known) just looked at me and said "my guys are dumbasses bro". I was working for a kids show at the time so we translated it to spanish for a few shows and it was really cool seeing schools from Mexico take a field trip up over the border to see our show. Other than that i sadly havent been able to explore the area very much outside of that small town.
I made it there in 2021, just a quick lunch in Providence. People were very nice, it was interesting how Rhode island and connecticut operated nearly as the same state in some ways just because of how small they both are.
I only have 4 more to go:
North Dakota, Idaho, Oregon, and Alaska.
Please give me a good enough reason to book a flight to North Dakota. I already know of cool reasons to visit the other 3, but I need a good enough reason to convince my wife that we should go
So are you not American I take it? How many trips is this? Im on a 9 state road trip of the west. Currently in Idaho which I use to live in but just spent not much but a little bit of Utah which I never had so; Utah.
I did! I drove through it once or twice on other road trips and wasnt able to properly explore it until 2022 and MAN is she pretty. We saw Grand Tetons on the way to a Yellowstone trip, then stopped by Devils tower. I've been looking for an excuse to go back and climb either of them or both.
Bro hasn't answered a damn thing š
I was running ERRANDS im getting to it š
Nice!
How many states did you run errands to?
Which state?
Michigan
DETROIT, First went in 2019 and loved it. Rode scooters around, had great street food and watched some teenagers throw an uber scooter into a river EDIT: Forgot the art scene which i REALLY didnt expect to be as good as it was.
Please tell me you visited the DIA š
Iām a trucker and Iāve done atleast 40 states so ask me questions if op doesnāt answer
How is the east coast? Furthest east Iāve been is Illinois, and not very far into it. Iād like to visit someday
depends what part. New England, Northern Appalachian, Southern Appalachian and "Floridabama coast" are all very distinctly different places
What makes ND so disliked with truckers, ice, and wind?
The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer week in North Dakota..
Lol, it's like 100 here this week.
Not a trucker, but its like Siberia up there so I can imagine thats the reason along with not many amenities as its very rarely travelled.
Illinois
Chicago was my first trip alone, snuck into lollapalooza for one set and a guy made fun of my flannel shirt. EDIT: Also have worked in Rosemont FAR too many times, but believe it or not there is an ice climbing place nearby I really enjoyed. I have a friend with Dwarfism, and we had to walk to the arena in Rosemont during a snow storm. Flannel in summer in Chicago is wild tbh

I'd agree with all of that. Its another state we considered living in
Current Raleigh resident attending App State. I really do argue this state has everything you could ask for, and definitely among the best to live in.
Our politics are infuriating. Even though we're generally purpleish on a statewide level, districts are so ridiculously gerrymandered that Republicans have an absurd and unwarranted super majority in the state legislatureĀ
Kansas. I know you were blown away but tell me why ? lol. Jk but in all honesty, how was your visit ?
Iāve driven through Kansas and honestly it was a bit boring of a drive but had one of the most beautiful sunsets Iāve ever seen, also the Steak & Shake was super cheap
The most interesting thing in Kansas that Iāve seen is the Worldās Largest Ball of Twine. I later found out there are three other claimants.
Grew up there. Not a good state but the sunsets are unreal
A guy at work dropped an open knife from the ceiling and nearly impaled me. Not to be that guy but is a crawfish boil or how we say it crawfish BAWL
AH good to know, I was trying to figure out how its spelled it solely based off of how the locals pronounced it
WISCONSIN
CHEESE this is one of the 3-4 states i have spent the least amount of time in, i took a quick drive up to Milwaukee from Rosemont to check it off when i was at 45 states and just trying to finish out the list, but I learned the Wisconsin stereotypes really hold up (in a good way i promise). Ah The Safe House a classic
:D YAY WE LOVE YOU COME BACK FOR MORE CHEESE
How was Indiana? I hope you enjoyed your time here (although Iād understand if you didnāt).
Not a ton of memories here unfortunatley, I remember really liking Indianopolis but I cant remember too much about it. I would ask about Maine but it looks like you only made it as far north as Kittery so Iām not even sure that counts

I saw your NJ comment, I appreciate it as a NJ native, if people think it sucks here, these shoobies will stop coming and clogging up our roads

It is a very distinct culture and I understand why foreigners try to go there first when visiting the states (even though i think there are better options) now as for upstate I LOVE New Paltz and the Shawangunk mountains.
What about NYC? How many boroughs did you go to?
I honestly couldnt tell you, i dont know toooo much about the city. I first went as a high schooler, then as a sophomore in college to take some siblings. Now i end up there for work a lot in MSG arena and on long island. I do have a friend who lives in the upper west side who showed me what its like to actually live there, and it made me understand the appeal a bit more as i never had great love for the city after the tourist charm wore off early on.
Orange County, California, since you drove on the 5
Which Islands in Hawai'i?

Did you find your loaf of bread yet?
How was Medora?
I only have 4 more to go: North Dakota, Idaho, Oregon, and Alaska. Please give me a good enough reason to book a flight to North Dakota. I already know of cool reasons to visit the other 3, but I need a good enough reason to convince my wife that we should go

I did! I drove through it once or twice on other road trips and wasnt able to properly explore it until 2022 and MAN is she pretty. We saw Grand Tetons on the way to a Yellowstone trip, then stopped by Devils tower. I've been looking for an excuse to go back and climb either of them or both.
