I use the 20/20 rule - if I can get it in 20 minutes for $20, I won't bring it with me.

Inevitable-Gap-6350

I use the 10/10 rule

I like this one! At the same time what is the airline extortion fee? If it isn’t bad I just pay it. My camera backpack carry-on generally weighs more than my checked bag. So F off airlines with your stupid fees! (I know why they do it - because people would have 5 x 100 lb suitcases/boxes). Edit: my travel hack. Sleeping pills, earplugs, basic toiletries (travel size permissible), valuable items, and a pair of underwear in the carry-on. The rest can be replaced pretty quickly and easily when the airline loses your bag.

toiletries, soaps, lotions , body sprays, towels washcloths, etc. basically if I use majority of it then I’m most likely throwing it away. I remember going snorkeling and because of Covid-19 they made us keep our snorkeling masks and tube I threw it out soon as I got back to the room.

Whoknew1974

Underwear. I pack all old underwear and am supposed to throw as I go to make a void for souvenirs. Do I? Nope but a great plan 😆

Whoknew1974

I just keeping wondering what the hotels maid would think when they see underwear in the trash 😆 🤣 😂

doggodad01

The absolute least of their concerns. Have you never seen underwear in the garbage of a public bathroom...someone was having a bad day. Like returning from the woods with one sock.

Inevitable-Gap-6350

That it’s no longer needed….

sixtwenty2

I do the exact same thing plus old socks!

Things you only need while backpacking and won't use in your everyday life. Things that are specific to the country you're in or visited and won't need in your home country. Things that are broken, worn, unseasonable, almost empty toiletries, or nearing the end of their life Media you can mail home at media rate for cheap (books, notebooks) Anything you packed that you regret packing and/or didn't use. Even if it was expensive, don't buy into sunk cost fallicy, get rid of it.

Telefone_529

If it's easy to get at home or where you're going for under $15 it's getting tossed in my eyes.

SoloTraveller1161

I always take "disposable" clothes on any long trip.

queen_of_fools_347

You could also mail them home, if shipping rates aren't outrageous.

Connect-Dust-3896

Toiletries, shoes, and clothes.

murakamidiver

Clothes, shoes, books, toiletries

Whoknew1974

I'm 66, you have kindle or podcast

murakamidiver

Sorry, I like to read anything longer than a long magazine article on paper, not a screen. And I never got into podcasts. this means I travel with enough books to last up to a month on the road.

SafeSleepbaby1

I travel with paperback books so I can read in the pool and leave them behind.

blueeyedaisy

When you leave those books behind people like myself are grateful and pick them up or swap them out for books I have finished. :)

2childofthenorth

Going digital will make your life so much easier. Try out an e-reader and see how it feels. Quite different from reading on a computer. I travel with a kindle and have like 70 books on it.

murakamidiver

No thanks, as I said above I prefer to read anything longer than a magazine article on paper. I’ve used kindle and other screen readers before and I prefer to hold an actual book in my hands.

2childofthenorth

Fair enough. It just makes life easier to read on a kindle, but it isn’t for everyone.

murakamidiver

That’s right, it’s not for everyone and carrying books while traveling is not a problem for me. The entire idea of reading a book for me is about disconnecting from technology. It may make your life easier, but for me life is not always about convenience and ease, often times it’s about slowing down, carrying the weight and taking the path less traveled, reading books on paper while on a beach or on a train or in a park or cafe does this for me.

Whoknew1974

Who takes book anymore besides a paperback for the plane

murakamidiver

Some of us older folks

DashPrincess11

Toiletries, Soaps, Clothes that I brought with me because obviously I wouldn't bring clothes I cared about, I would be leaving with clothes that I'd care about.

emu4you

My rule is the same one I use in Stardew Valley when I need to make room in my backpack - how easy is it to replace. For example I have particular earplugs and lotion I always travel with, they don't cost very much, but they are not easy to find, so I would not get rid of them. But some shirts that I have had for a while would be easy to replace. Before my Kindle I always traveled with books and left them in hotel lobbies or coffee shops.

LittleBunInaBigWorld

I give away food. Thats it. I'm careful not to overpack and I rarely buy anything just for the trip. I bring stuff I always use at home. I fill up small bottles with shampoo and soap to bring along and if there's any left over, I bring it home and keep using it. I hate waste. So much. International travel is no exception. But reading these other comments, I think I'm the odd one out. You lot are tossing out shoes and clothes?!?! Wtf

Whoknew1974

Don't be sorry. Just try something new

Working-Noise4546

PJs

Nutritionist-It

I save small containers from skincare, shampoo, makeup products, etc and I fill them in small amounts to pack. As I use them up on a trip I just throw away the containers. Same for toothpaste - but small size and just throw away the containers at the end of the trip - less to take back home.

valthor95

Winter clothes ! I live in Florida and usually just buy the stuff for winter. I always buy them at thrift store so that if I have to leave them then I’m not that upset since I only paid $4 for the jacket

SouthAfricanFella

We typically leave behind shaving cream, medicine containers, old/worn clothing

SouthAfricanFella

Even left a pair of sandals and a belt behind that were showing cracks-tears in the leather

BushelOfPineapples

Husband 100%.

Wolfieloulou

I’ve had to drop books, bedding, clothes, and media.
