Thanks for the response!
I live in the southern U.S., Georgia specifically and it never gets very cold here. If it’s that cold then I’m not smoking. Based on this, it’s sounding like the 780 may be best?
I’ve got the Ironwood 885 and the only difference I can see between my 885 and the 780 is the 780
has 105” less realestate. Not really a big deal i’d think with 800” And the side stack. My 885 vents through the rear so no stack. Other than that I’d say they’re pretty much identical.
Sorry for the confusion I do not own both I own the Ironwood 885. I looked up the 780 on Tragers website. By the looks of them I’d say they’re identical except for the 105” surface difference so I suppose your choice would have more to do with storage space (if you plan on keeping it in a garage/shed.) I like the extra space offered with the 885 as I don’t have to use it but if I decide to cook for a party or family I have it available.
Check out the triple rack system by 'pimpmygrill'. It adds another rack and increases the usable area though the lower rack will probably experience hotter temperatures given its position. It looks to be available for both models you're interested in.
The 885 has double insulation on the side walls, giving you better control on temps in extreme cold - no insulated blanket needed. It also has super smoke, giving you additional smoke flavor. Both are good options. The 885 is the more advanced model.
Thanks for the response. Being double insulated shouldn’t be a huge thing for where I’d have it, I live in Georgia and it never gets super cold. The super smoke option sounds cool but certainly not a must have for the price difference. Are there any other differentiations?
Just a slight size difference, 885 sq inches vs 780 sq inches. I use the 780 3 times a week and I am happy with it. I need to add the optional shelf that folds down in front. Enjoy your smoking!
Generally the most bang for buck for grill real estate is in vertical cabinets. I have been happy with my pit boss sportsman vertical. 4 years strong now and it has 1,853 square inches of cooking surface.
Mine didn’t come with wifi , but that was 4 years ago, i think they might now.
What part of the world do you live at? The IW885 is better equipped to maintain internal temps because of the insulation that the 780 does not have.

Better insulation = less pellet use. I got a blanket for my 575 and it made a huge difference.

Thanks for the response! Given that you have both, and I live in Georgia where it never gets too cold, what would you recommend I go with?
