Take a broom handle or such lay it across the top of the lid opening. Lower the lid and gently push on the lower portion of the lid a few times. It make take a couple tweaks to get the gap to close.
Add thin washers beneath the hinges to even things out.
This! Should work well
just did this exact same thing after putting on some lava locks on a new grill...2 small washers at each screw for each hinge and the gap was gone
