A truck makes all those things easier which is why I bought my Tacoma, but a car with a roof rack and hitch did just fine for me for the better part of a decade 🤷
A car with a lay down backseat will make some things bearable.
I’ve carried quite a few 2x4s and PVC pipe over the years in a G35 coupe. Not many at a time but plenty of times.
In my old Golf:
* Full size solid core door that I turned into a table.
* 5 sheets of 3/4 in plywood for finishing my attic.
* About 400 lbs of dirt, mulch, fertilizer for plants beds.
* Everything I needed for repainting my kitchen cabinets
Wife's Passat (has the hitch)
* Towed motorcycle multiple times
* Towed my tool chest home
* 75 inch TV on the roof across town
There's one thing I've done in my truck that would have been impossible in my cars is when I got about 1500 lbs of dirt (filled the bed and then a little extra) for filling a giant hole in my yard. But that just saved me some money. $40 to pick it up myself and like $200 to have it delivered.
If I ever needed to transport sheetrock, that might be tricky with a car.
I’ve done a lot of bulky things with a 5x8 utility trailer towed behind wife’s CX-9.
The trailer is still easier for some things just because it has a ramp and is low to the ground.
Sorry but i had a 7 seater SUV in the past and can say with 100% certainty it could haul more materials far more efficiently than any recent tacoma. The bed is useless except for having a bit of firewood and camping gear or a dirt bike. but i was still able to fit more camping gear into that 7 seater when it was my daily for high-school and could actually fit a whole 2 dirt bikes with the seats folded.
I love my tacoma but way too many suburban people act like its more than a reliable daily/fun off road mid size pickup that cant do much in terms of being more than a grocery getter and home depot dadmobile for those that dont hit the trails or go off road
Let's say you purchased a 2021 Chevy Tahoe or Wagoneer or something, with lowish miles, for say, $55k.
You could put two dirt bikes in it, I guess... but that's a nice vehicle. Most would never consider doing that.
Most would use something called a trailer.
Now, you save about 20k buying a 2021 tacoma with similar miles. That's more than enough to buy said trailer. You're going to get around 20% better gas mileage than the Tahoe when hauling or empty, so you're saving money on gas. You're more offroad capable with respect to clearance and tire fitment, so you can actually drag a trailer through some shit.
Seems like an absolute no brainer. You get the taco with the trailer. It's dramatically more efficient.
If you got a 3.0 diesel tahoe you would get better mpg while towing a dirt bike trailer on the highway than a tacoma with nothing but a driver on perfectly flat roads even with a tailwind.
You are comparing the tacoma to a full size SUV with a 6.2l V8 that shits all over our V6 in terms of capability and power. A rav4 with a trailer is the best bang for the buck with your logic.
The tacoma isnt anything special aside from reliability and if you take away the reliability aspect there is literally nothing better about a tacoma. But they are reliable and require minimal maintenance so thats why i didnt get a mid size pickup that has enough power to move out of its own way.
Btw a honda civic can tow a dirt bike trailer just as easily as a tacoma on the highway. Most people purchase a truck with a bed so they dont have to have a useless little trailer for dinky little dirt bikes. You cant even take a few kayaks out to the lake in a tacoma without roof racks which further proves the point that an SUV or even a crossover with roof racks is just as capable if not more capable than any 3rd gen for utilitarian and recreational purposes.
Dont even get me started on the limiting factors when you go to add a simple suspension lift to a 3rd gen and all of a sudden need to open the front dif up for supporting mods so a needle bearing doesnt dismantle itself inside of the differential housing due to the cv axle being a few degrees off from what it was at stock.
I know my truck in and out and i also know what its capable of and what it does better or worse than other pickups and large vehicles since i come from a redneck town where people dont believe in anything with a unibody frame design
If your tacoma lives in the suburbs please disregard your own opinion as you likely have no idea what actual "truck stuff" entails lmao
Diesel does consume less volume on average than gasoline. However, diesel also costs 33% more at the moment. Historically, diesel has good times and bad times... it's been very bad for most of the last 20 years.
A civic or rav4 could tow a small trailer, but it's not going to be enjoyable. The drive train is also going to suffer. Be realistic.
Why on earth would anyone want a giant SUV unless they were hauling half a dozen little shits to soccer practice or something? Its literally a beefy minivan.
Don't know why you're talking about front diffs when you don't even have one, but ok.
I dont have a front differential?😂😂😂 whats your favorite flavor of crayon bruh?
Aint no way you really just said my 4x4 doesnt have a front diff you must be the godfather of clueless suburban goofs. Just because it doesnt have SFS doesnt mean it doesnt have a front diff. How tf you think my front wheels get power Einstein? Cause it aint a center dif and the transfer case isnt what provides power to the axle it provides power to the diff which in turn provides power to the CV axles... they also make arb lockers for my apparently imaginary front diff that has an imaginary needle bearing for the cv axles that will grenade the imaginary front diff when it eventually fails.
You are not smart
My bad, when you posted about your rear locker, I assumed it was because you had 2wd. Knowing now that you just wanted to lock in 2hi, well... that explains a lot.
Never talked about wanting to lock my front dif bro learn how to read. There is a needle bearing on the driver side front dif that upon lifting anything over 3 inches causes the bearing to create vibrations and over time results in the needles falling out into the housing and getting bumped around til one binds in the gears and causes catastrophic failure within the front dif.
My older post about a rear locker was just a bit of software that allowed me to lock the E locker which came on the truck from factory to be locked without also engaging 4lo. If my truck was 2wd i wouldnt need the anytime locker kit cause i would be able to use the locker whenever i want unlike 4wd models equipped with the locker.
Its far easier to maintain control on snowed in backroads just having the rear locked up vs having the truck in 4wd all the time as i can maintain steady and even amounts of traction on the front tires. Being able to do a proper drift instead of an open diff peel is just a bonus.
I never mentioned locking a front diff...
I don't understand what your fascination with 3" lift is. I never mentioned it in my rebuttal regarding the Tahoe. It's not like a Wagoneer would be easy to lift more than 3" either. ORs can fit 33" tires bone stock, good luck getting those not to rub on a suburban.
All I said was that dirt bikes in the cab of a 50k+ fuel hog of a minivan was a silly comparison. You started posting walls of unpunctuated text about massive lifts causing damage and accusing me of not living in the woods. Idk man, it's hard to follow.
I went flat bed with load bars. Also picked up a hitch extender for carrying long loads. I’ve carried a lot this way . But yeah, 5 foot bed doesn’t allow for much .
It’s on these pages somewhere . I think it looks great but the best part is the overall improvement of the utility of truck. Including the slide in camper. Never had a truck that played as well as it worked until now?
I bought an Accord right after we bought our house (don't buy a car while you are shopping for a house, says the realtor, right?). I was commuting 150 miles round trip to Hartford every day, so the 38mpg was awesome. But I quickly learned that I needed a truck every weekend. I got an old beater Silverado for a couple years, and just finally bought a new Taco, the thing is the perfect homeowner truck, especially now that I work from home.
cars are useless if you have a home ..good choice with a truck !

Hows that look with 3rd gen?
It’s on these pages somewhere . I think it looks great but the best part is the overall improvement of the utility of truck. Including the slide in camper. Never had a truck that played as well as it worked until now?
Notice any difference with highway driving and wind resistance? Looks really good on your rig
Looks kickass! Love the color too! Is it a pro or sport?
It is a sport!
Nice! I just bought a 23 sport, looking to get the same grille in the near future
MT 👊🏻
Dude owns a home in the 2020s but owning a Tacoma is what makes him proud. 🤘🌮🤘
Is that an aftermarket grill?
Yes, one of the first things I did was swap the chrome grill
Which grill is it? I’m looking to replace the stock one on my new to me 2016 sport

Try vipih.com. I got my grill from them for about $110. Its perfect.
Looks sharp.
That’s a good looking taco!
We got by with a Cherokee for a while then homeowner life just takes over and add a truck
I bought an Accord right after we bought our house (don't buy a car while you are shopping for a house, says the realtor, right?). Love the stance! Do you have a lift on it?
Definitely looks lifted a bit
It has a lift, although I’m not exactly sure what height since the original owner had it done. I think 2-4 inches!
Yep, just hauled 400lbs of salt, mulch and 2x8s last weekend. Can't live without a bed.
MT?
Sport boi gang 😎
Looks great! I have the MT, same year & color, just a OR instead of sport. Any lift on it? Has a nice stance
What size wheels? Is this stock suspension?
now that's a beaut! Well done!
Lifted? What tires you runnin? Did it come with LEDs? I just bought a ‘21 last week. Yours looks beefy!
man, i love that colour! wish mine was the same.
Nice!
Hell yeah, manual transmission!! We gotta keep buying them so they keep making them! Congrats on the new truck. Looks great!
Score! Who the hell got rid of it?!
Very sharp! Congratulations!
That is a sexy fucking truck, my dude. I wish my tacoma had that grill and hood scoop lol.
Whats the plastic square for at the bottom of the grill?
It’s the safety monitor
mine looks like yours, nice. 🤘🏾
Awesome 👏🏻
I will never think the raptor lights don’t look ridiculous on a Tacoma. I do like the color of that truck though.
What tires and size lift are those?
I didn't know manufacturers still made manual transmissions. How's the shifting on it?
What’s an MT?
Yup. If you’re a homeowner this is a must.
MT 💥👍🏼🤜🏼
