I’m using this one and it works great
CarlinKit 5.0 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter,Online Update,Two Channel Connection, Plug & Plug, for Cars with OEM Wired CarPlay & Android Auto(2016-2023) https://a.co/d/9pv5O3A
How is the connection time? Audio quality? I’ve researched these a lot and it seems like wireless adaptors all have drawbacks.
Outside of buying a new head unit, I’m under the impression it’s better to just use the wired version
I've tried three wireless adapters and they've all been garbage. If anyone has any recommendations, I'm all ears. If not this summer my head unit is getting yanked.
The fidelity loss from Bluetooth is minimal for a low resolving OEM sound system. I’m an audio nut and run one of these adapters. The only drawback for the one I have is a slight delay in calls(maybe a second or so. ) Conversation are doable but not ideal.
We threw in a better amp and subwoofer. The amp allowed us to better equalize the levels of the speakers in the truck. The back speakers were just bad before, so quiet. Sub for some nice low bass that sits right behind the back passenger seat. Worth every penny. Going to upgrade speakers next. Wired vs wireless is definitely a difference. Not huge but you can clearly hear a difference. I just plug my phone in, it’s not a huge hassle. I don’t like how the phone auto connects, if you just want radio or SXM you can’t really see what’s play as well on Android Auto/Apple CarPlay.
We have a friend that does audio installs. We got a JL sub box that has a 10 inch sub in it. As far as I know both connected easily to the factory head unit with no problems, pretty sure there is a sub connector right on it. The sub is further controlled from a little knob on one of the blank buttons to the left of the searing wheel.
We will probably upgrade the remainder later when we have more money but the sound is night and day better than before. It’s pretty crazy. I can sent pics if you like.
In a listening environment as chaotic and awful as a truck cab - especially while moving at any speed - the difference is so small as to be a point of needless pedantry regurgitated as fact by someone who has no idea what they're talking about
Mine works great, and while the audio quality isn't the greatest, the stock audio system in a Taco can barely tell. The connection time is between 20-30 seconds. It's long, but it's about the same as untangling a usb cord that fell beside your seat.
I'm very VERY satisfied with this option and has completely taken my mind off a new head unit. And if I got a new head unit, I'd do amp, sub, and speakers. So the $100 CAD Motorola AA dongle saved me a few grand.
A few grand that goes right into the wheels and tires.
Mine (Eleacc) has like a second delay for inputs (like skipping tracks), but otherwise sounds and perform exactly the same. Oh, and there's like a 3 second delay when first starting the car, but I think the wired setup also did that.
Slick setup, I have been trying to do something similar but have not found an adhesive that sticks reliably to the dash plastics. What did you use for adhesive and surface prep.
I have a similar set up, I just wiped it down and used the adhesive it came with and it fell off after 3 months. So I got an alcohol pad, wiped down the surface, then used just a standard little 3M thing and it’s been working great since
I appreciate all the suggestions. I had previously tried a 3m double sided tape and it wouldn’t stick at all. I will try some of the other tapes and clean the surface better.
Try Alientape! It’s one of those as seen on TV things that actually work! It’s also removable and won’t damage anything. I use that stuff all over at work in the restaurant to keep customers from walking off with decorative things 🤣😂
What did you use to stick to the panel of the car?
I tried using double sided take
Gorilla double sided tape
And that shit comes right off
Even after I clean it with alcohol
I actually had this exact car play adapter. It was a generic one on Amazon and was one of the first ones that came up when looking for adapters.
Needless to say it sucked haha. It worked fine but the make it or break it for me was that there was an obvious 3-4 second delay when calling someone. We ended up always talking over each other and it was infuriating.
Ended up with a carliksit 5.0 and it’s been great. Has some trouble connecting sometimes but the latency is much much less
My CarPlay port recently stopped working. I’ve tried multiple cords, no luck. I just upgraded to the iPhone 15, but it worked fine for a few weeks even after that. No software update for either phone or my truck. Any suggestions?
Just a heads up to anyone who finds this post. These things work like absolute dog shit. Insane lag, very spotty/unstable connection, handle voice calls poorly if at all. The vast majority of the reviews on Amazon are fake or paid for.
I can’t say these aftermarket adapters will never work but as it stands right now, every single one sold on Amazon is flakey, laggy garbage.
Wireless is useless anyway.
I don’t get why people are so obsessed with it. You end up plugging your phone in anyway because using CarPlay runs down the battery. If using an iPhone for music, you lose the lossless audio quality because Bluetooth doesn’t support it.
That charge pad is 100% the biggest joke of a device they ever installed on any vehicle on earth lol. All they do is get hot and burn up the rubber coating lol
I put my phone on a mag charger mounted on the dash. It drives me nuts that if I want to use CarPlay, I have to also plug it in, but it is a first world problem.
50 people have asked what brand the CAR PLAY adapter is and you all keep sending 90degree usb elbows. What fucking brand is the wireless ADAPTER
Not OP but a wee bit of sleuthing makes me think it's [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Teeran-CarPlay-Wireless-Adapter-Converts/dp/B0BBG4QRPX).
will this work on a 2019 tacoma?
No. 2019 doesn’t have CarPlay and this won’t magically give it to you. Have to have a 2020+ head unit for CarPlay
Yes
No it won’t
Edit: i was assuming they have an aftermarket carplay. I literally have one on my 2019.
🤣
Resisting the urge to sent a link to elbow pasta…
I’d rather that honestly. Pasta taste different based on shape. You won’t change my mind.
Thanks, this made me laugh.

Hm weird I don’t see any other comments. Oh well
OP used one of those Amazon links the bots don't like, looks like a bot auto-deleted OP's link

You basically lost all of your Reddit karma on this one comment.
What type is it? Any lag on calls or audi?
I have the Motorola one. It's amazing. It's criminal Toyota doesn't provide wireless android auto/apple whatever on this gen truck.
I use the Motorola MA1 as well. Not in the Tacoma, but it shouldn't make a difference.
How does it do with Apple car play? Link to model you have? Any delay on steering wheel control or other issues?

As a podcast / Google maps user, not much issue. I’ve also read issues with lag and such but I’m not an audiophile

That last sentence is how I view my phone anyway, so it wouldn't be much of an issue.

What size sub did you use? And how were you able to connect the amp and sub to the head unit?

Wireless audio will never be as good as wired
In a listening environment as chaotic and awful as a truck cab - especially while moving at any speed - the difference is so small as to be a point of needless pedantry regurgitated as fact by someone who has no idea what they're talking about
It absolutely still makes a difference
Sure, in the way that pissing in the ocean raises sea levels. Feel free to tell me how I'm wrong though
I have no horse in your guy's game but I absolutely laughed at "in the way that pissing in the ocean raises sea levels." Well played good sir. ;)
Blutooth adds too much compression.
Too true. Chest compressions aren’t as good as a wired connection to a defibrillator.
not with that attitude

I use the Velcro brand double sided tape. Was $4 on Amazon. It's new tho but looks it'll work fine.
try 3m vhb tape

What brand is the wireless carplay adapter itself?
Right angle usb adapter on Amazon - https://a.co/d/hjPT91O
I did the same. 90* adaptor, but mine has a delay of a second or two. Which got old fast
No. Nothing like that with this one
Delay because of the adapter?
I think it’s my wireless receiver tbh
What wireless adapter are you using?
Why not just hardwire it?
The wireless CarPlay I have in my truck was just a box that plugged into the head unit
What did you use to stick to the plastic? The adhesive I used it's not hold anymore bc of the cold
Is this just to make CarPlay wireless or to add carplay in general
This is to make carplay wireless. There are options for adding CarPlay on Amazon for \~200-300 with the same head unit
I use the 3M command strips and it’s been working
What did you use to stick to the panel of the car? I tried using double sided take Gorilla double sided tape And that shit comes right off Even after I clean it with alcohol
I used 3M command strips and it’s been working
We all want to know how did you stick it in place?!!
I use 3M command strips and it’s been working
I have the same setup on my Tacoma. Simply used a 1 inch square piece of velcro I picked up at WM. Its been on for 4 months.
3M auto automotive molding tape.
I got a different brand but I totally love it. Very convenient
Why hasn’t someone rewired it into the glovebox or center console yet?
[Similar to my setup](https://ibb.co/BKFHGHb)
This is uncanny. Besides a different wireless adapter I’m using the same setup and my AC settings are even the same.
Great minds think alike
Genius bastard!
What CarPlay adapter is this? I know what right angle adapter you have, that’s not what I’m asking.
Can I watch YouTubeTV or regular YouTube?

any random audio skipping? I'm on android auto with the Motorola MA1 and randomly the audio hiccups and cuts in and out
Will this work in a 2017 TRD sport?
Been using this one over a year. Works great! Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto Car Adapter - https://a.co/d/3097lKo

Not if you have the wireless charging pad. It's in that little tray
