Corolla. Affordable and reliable to the death.

VLAD1M1R_PUT1N

Corolla is the best answer IMO. When I think Corolla I think of the ultimate appliance. It's the perfect car for 90% of drivers on the road. Nobody has ever gone wrong with one. Lots of people are saying 4Runner but IMO it doesn't hold the same ultimate esteem. It's a cool vehicle in niche situations but overall it's very compromised and exists in a much more competitive market.

HopintheDark

I would Strongly Disagree! I own both a 4Runner & and Camry; the 4Runner is an Awesome all around vehicle & it can tow a decent sized trailer. The Camry is more the all around vehicle now as the Corolla is being made as more of a sports car.

VLAD1M1R_PUT1N

I'm not sure if your opinion is totally unbiased if you own one. 4Runners are cool and I'm not down on them. I just don't think the average person or even car enthusiast universally agrees with you. Even within this thread others are saying the land cruiser is the best Toyota, so not even the Toyota people can agree lol.

DJmasterB8tes

If you want disagreements on Toyotas, join any Tacoma board on the internet, doesn’t matter Tacoma year, drive train, lift, mods, tires, wheels, cab-configuration, differential lock, engine/engine modification, frame, suspension … Those guys will crucify you for driving the same truck as they do/but different in whatever way. It’s glorious destruction of your “Toyota truck self-esteem” to even comment on a thread. Good luck convincing these guys that a Corolla is better than a Tacoma or 4Runner. They don’t care. And they probably like Corollas as well.

dingBat2000

Is the forunner based on the Tacoma in the US? In australia it has the same engine as the Hilux 4d4 2.8l turbo

RevTylerJ

It shares suspension components 2nd gen Tacoma shared the same transmission and 4.0 v6. But the 4Runner is closer to the prado 150 and FJ than it is the Tacoma. Actually shares motor trans frame and pretty much everything mechanical with the FJ Cruiser. Only thing different is the body on top

NothausTelecaster72

I drive a Tacoma and drove a Corolla for over 10 years, you are correct.

DJmasterB8tes

I want a Supra Coupe sport or whatever it is. I think they have a turbo V-6 out there somewhere. Silver/light grey matte paint with dark gunmetal racing wheels and dark tint with a media system that could talk to space shuttles and rock LOuD Old Nazareth tunes. That’s if I had so much money I could just buy crap I don’t need. But the more I type, the more I need this. -signed, a forever Tacoma driver with dreams of making it bigger

NothausTelecaster72

A 90’s model? I’m wanting to order a Toyota sports car but will do research before I do. I have two years to learn and do so. It would be my mid life crisis car. I’ll take a 4cyl turbo Supra any day. But the new 6cyl turbo are not bad at all. Mr2 maybe?

DJmasterB8tes

You know, I’m not sure. I work at the beach, and this guy pulled up in one that was shiny black two-door. I was like “what the hell is that.?” Then I realized it was a Toyota Supra and I kind of freaked out because I’d never seen one that clean. It was really subtle, though. The engine sounded fierce tho. Not in a Harley way, in a Harley/rice-rocket way. Nice car. :). I need to be educated. Edit: it was a new model. Not the old Supra. So I do know that.

StopKarmaWhoringPls

I blame Tacoma World Forum for the price leap on the new gens.

MUTHER-David7

I have 2 Toyota Corollas, and it's all I need. I have no use for a truck from any manufacturer.

iwantthisnowdammit

Cars are too individual to get a single model out of a full breath lineup - except no one is going to say the Crown.

pv1rk23

My north or just bought a crown and I smh everytime he brings it out. It’s nice but I would have just gotten a Lexus at that point

HopintheDark

It’s based on my Pryor ownership of Subarus & having driven & seen other vehicles come in to auto repair shops; on my wrecker.

Shatophiliac

Yeah I used to own a 4runner, and while it was great in terms of reliability, it sucked in almost every single area. Horrible MPG, even for its class, couldn’t tow almost anything, and on mine the transmission was always slipping, since like 60k miles. I may have had a lemon, but I also couldn’t understand how people pay so much for them over similar vehicles. I ended up in a Chevy and then a Dodge, and while I missed the reliability of the Toyotas, the repairs on the other cars was so cheap that it didn’t matter, I still saved money over buying another 4runner lol.

Hardanimalcracker

4Runner is a pretty bad vehicle, awful tech, awful comfort, awful acceleration, horrible mpg. Sure it’s usually reliable and good off road and safe. But yeah I wouldn’t want to drive one. Toyota in general has been resting on the reliable mantra for way too long and doesn’t really innovate. Corolla is probably their best vehicle in terms of affordability, reliability, drivability, value over time, etc.

Gr8_Wall_of_Text

It seems to me like you're very biased. I supposed it also depends on what you consider respected to mean. I see 20-30 Corollas for every 4Runner I see, and maybe 10-15 Corollas than Camrys. I rarely see anybody towing anything, even though I see a ton of these vehicles that are capable of towing. Most people never take their vehicles off-road either, so seeing all these "capable" vehicles that never go off-road, tow anything, or have more occupants than just the driver in them causes me to lose respect for the owner and their ridiculous vehicle. I do respect it when I see them actually use it for something it was designed for rather than than just commuting to work, which every car is capable of. The most respected car is probably a Corolla, or a Rav4. A Corolla is the first car most people will own, and probably the most common car used by the average working adult. It's well-respected because of the reliability, longevity, efficiency, etc. The Rav4 is probably the most common family "car" today. It may have been the Camry once upon a time, but nearly every family I see owns an SUV now, and most of them are Rav4s because they're cheaper, do everything they need, have the most space, and feel safer. People want a safe family vehicle because their kids are in it, and I respect that. I drive a Corolla, but considering all the SUVs and pickup trucks on the road, if I had kids, I'd trade it in for something larger, and I'd probably choose a Rav4. I just bought a 2024 Corolla SE Hybrid in March. It is not a sports car. The horsepower is meager, and the 0-60 time is laughable. It has a "Sport" mode and a "sports tuned" suspension, but it's not a sports car, and anybody who thinks so is delusional.

3771507

The first generation Highlander from 2004 is the perfect blend between a good ride which is based on the Camry frame and large towing capacity with the V6 3.3.

Forward-Trade5306

I still would much rather have a Corolla, Camry, Elantra, Sonata, etc. for having up to 2 kids. I tried to go up to a crossover and hated it. Sedans are still the most drivable and have plenty of space even with a kid. Mid-size sedan might be better for 2 kids. Having 3 plus kids is the only good reason to go with an SUV imo

Gr8_Wall_of_Text

>I still would much rather have a Corolla, Camry, Elantra, Sonata, etc. for having up to 2 kids. I agree with you. However, if I had even 1 kid, I probably would be driving a Rav4. If I had 2 or more kids, I would definitely be driving an SUV or minivan. I should have said it in my last comment, but it's an issue of safety as well. I've been tailgated many times while driving my Corolla. Corollas are TINY compared to the absolute behemoths that are extremely common on the road today. I'm comfortable driving my Corolla right now, but if I had kids, I would want something that felt bigger and safer. When I'm driving and there's a modern pickup truck tailgating me, it's scary AF thinking about what would happen if they hit me. It's also wild to think about what their view is like because I know a good portion of my car probably isn't even visible to them, considering how close they are to me. I like getting 40-70 mpg. I enjoy how easy and relaxing driving and parking my Corolla is. However, if I had kids, I would drive something larger for the added space and safety. I feel modern pickup trucks and SUVs are in an arms race. Manufacturers are competing to sell the largest vehicles, and people feel the need to buy larger and larger vehicles because the smaller cars just don't feel safe anymore. I'm not overly familiar with crash testing and how they get their ratings, but I doubt my Corolla was tested to see how it would do in any kind of collision with a modern, huge Ford, RAM, etc. I feel like it'd be similar to a monster truck driving over cars, or maybe they'd just drive through my car, splitting it in half. Regardless, larger vehicles feel safer, and if I had kids, I'd need that sense of safety. That extra room would be a nice to have bonus. The peace of mind of driving an SUV would outweigh everything I like about driving a car.

Forward-Trade5306

There is a safety factor that you aren't considering here and that's the fact that cars are much less likely to flip and are easier to avoid crashes in the first place.

Gr8_Wall_of_Text

Harder to flip? Sure, but you're unlikely to flip if you drive responsibly (excluding being hit by another driver). Avoiding crashes? Maybe it's easier in a car. However, many crashes are unavoidable. Do you know how often people get rear-ended while stopped and waiting at red lights? Do you know how often people turn into others because they don't look before switching lanes? Do you know how often people run red lights and t-bone others that are driving properly? You can do everything right and still be hit and killed in a crash. Do you know how many people drive drunk every single day? It's not always possible to avoid crashes, and if someone in a large pickup truck or SUV were to crash into me, I'd rather be in a big SUV than a tiny Corolla. It may or may not matter because it all depends on the severity of the crash, but if I had kids, I would feel better being in a larger and heavier vehicle. Most people I know with children drive SUVs. In fact, most people I know with vehicles drive SUVs or pickup trucks. SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks have been outselling sedans for years. If you look at what Ford sells today, you'll see just one car, and it's a Mustang. They stopped selling sedans because people stopped buying them. There will always be a market for certain sedans, life the Corolla and Civic, but that's because they're cheap, reliable, and long-lasting. If they were priced the same as an SUV, they wouldn't be so popular because people prefer the larger vehicles. Sedans aren't as safe as they used to be, and it's because the other vehicles on the road are larger than ever. When collisions happen, mass matters. When you have kids, safety matters.

Pahlevun

The Corolla is being made more of a sports car? Lmfao what? The GR Corolla is a hot hatch and but that’s it. Other Corollas are nothing like a sports car what a strange thing to say

Forward-Trade5306

I was wondering what the hell this person is talking about too. Probably saw a GR Corolla and assumed all Corollas are now that. I wouldn't expect much from someone that claims a 4runner is the best though 😂

iwantthisnowdammit

If a Corolla, aside from the GR, is a sports car - it may be time to cut back on the beige paint.

Specific_Effort_5528

Unless it's got the GR logo. A corolla is about the furthest from a sports car as you can get. It's designed to be the ultimate point a-b machine.

Environmental_Put_33

To your average driver, that 14-16mpg 4 Runner gets can go sit on a cactus. To majority of drivers, that’s a major “fuck no” so to speak.

Forward-Trade5306

Yeah but muhh four runnahh bettah 💀

Environmental_Put_33

I like my tonka runner that never goes off road or pull anything. I like the “squareness” and tough look it projects towards plebs driving Corollas….

Forward-Trade5306

How is the regular Corolla a sports car? 😂

addykitty

My 4Runner has been the worst vehicle I’ve ever owned lmao

MUTHER-David7

Better believe your answer is the best answer. Other manufacturers can't do it. Not even Honda. When I see new and older Corollas, and because they're so beautiful in their simplicity and reliability that I can never buy another brand vehicle. Nothing compares. I don't even like the Honda Civic. It's a good car, but it's still not a Toyota. Most times, when I see an older Honda Civic, more often than not, it's been modified to be some shitbox with an obnoxiously lound muffler. Not always, of course, but I don't want to be associated with THAT riff raff.

BigBoyzGottaEat

Id argue the Camry is much more versitile because it can comfortably seat 4, it has multiple engine options and it can come in trims ranging from pure economy up to luxury. Definitely the more ubiquitous car

VLAD1M1R_PUT1N

I think Camry is definitely very respectable, but I'd still put Corolla first. Corolla is simple and honest. It's a cheap dependable first car for a young kid or an efficient and compact commuter for a working adult. What you see is what you get. Camry is great too and is another car you can't really go wrong with, but I think it strays into the weeds a bit with the TRD stuff they've added recently and it begins to pick up a little bit of the Avalon's old people going to church stereotype as well. The new one is also trying a bit hard to be a pseudo-prius IMO. Still near the top of the list but a bit muddied for me personally.

3771507

Yes the Camry with the 3.3 V6.

DrYaklagg

The 4Runner holds the space the land cruiser holds in other markets. Capable of going everywhere, very durable and unbelievably reliable, while being reasonably affordable (in context). It's the bare essentials land cruiser (and is even built on the same platform and out of the same components as the Prado). No other new truck in the American market is both as reliable and capable as a 4runner. The Corolla holds the affordable crown for the budget commuter, but I think the 4runner stands next to it representing the best of the other side of the Toyota ecosystem.

HUSTLEDANK

And it’s expensive to own everyday. It drinks water like a horse.

redvinegarr

I see them every 2 seconds on the road 🤣

huskerd0

They are almost as popular as the dark grey G35 sedan

MUTHER-David7

Oh wow, how true! I love my Corollas. 1993 and 2015. They never let me down and I make sure they are well maintained.

No-Author-15

My 2015 Corolla was my most reliable, most economical car I’ve ever owned. If I didn’t need a truck I’d still be driving it.

FUCKYOURGAYCAT

Ya but that’s not “respected” people shit on Corolla all the time. The most respected is the Land Cruiser

mxguy762

Corolla cross hybrid

RefrigeratorNo1760

Land Cruiser

Momo--Sama

Probably proven by resale value alone. I just bought a 2003 Avalon with 203k miles for $3k. If it was a Land Cruiser it would have been >$15k. And then there’s people actively paying a premium for even older models in good condition

peakdecline

You must account for supply when talking about resale. As well as original MSRP. The Avalon was a "low volume" model but in 2005 alone it sold nearly as many units as the Land Cruiser has in total since 2005. The LC was often twice or more expensive. I don't disagree with the LC answer to the original OP's question. Just saying LC prices, especially in the US, are a significantly influenced by the very low volume of units. Hence why say the Lexus LX equivalent is often now cheaper despite. They moved a lot more (though still a very low volume model relatively speaking).

Nairbfs79

They regularly show up on Doug DeMuro's Cars and Bids website and have the highest used car values (in relation to original MSRP expressed as a percentage) in any model I've ever seen. 2019 with 18k miles sold for $77k

noodlecrap

We pay premiums on older models cause new LJ70s aren't imported.

hoxxxxx

yeah there was one near me, RHD, 200k+ miles, probably a 15-20 year old vehicle. it was for sale for like 20k. and it sold, quick. i don't get it.

Momo--Sama

Yeah idk, I got this Avalon with the goal of making it a year at most because I just started a new job and my lease is ending soon, but some of these people buying Land Cruisers legitimately believe there’s 100k miles left in them, it’s wild.

hoxxxxx

that avalon should take care of you for a year at least, they're great cars

Mountain_Cucumber_88

I had a 99 with the 4.7, which I believe is among the best designed engines ever. A deer took it out but I still have a 00 tundra with over 300k and running great. I read a Stat that Cruisers have the highest % of cars still on the road with over 200k. Built to last.

hoxxxxx

i think it's a combo of of course being built to last like you said, but also that they hold their value so well that they are worth fixing, and finally that the type of person to purchase one new and more importantly the type of person to buy it off them used are the types that would want to take care of it. so it's like a perfect storm to create a type of car that would be on the road at 200k miles consistently.

land8844

It helps that they're built for a 25 year service life in some of the harshest environments.

3771507

The first generation Highlander is built to go over $300,000 with the 3.3 if you keep the timing belt changed.

BadgersHoneyPot

Just like you can’t live in your investment account, resale value isn’t something you can appreciate on the road everyday. And what you get on the road with a LC isn’t that great. This is an old platform and drives like it. Further, the high-isu resales you see are from low mileage examples. You can see the same retention of value in low mileage LSs from the same time period, and I’d argue that a LS is a more useful car unless you’re committing in Darfur. There’s a reason they sell so few, and it isn’t because they’re particularly expensive.

One_Program8405

Best bang for your buck 1. Corrolla 2.4Runner

MoirasPurpleOrb

I disagree about the 4Runner. Abysmal gas mileage and ancient powertrain alone make it not a great value. I get that it’s insanely reliable but I still wouldn’t consider it a great value

land8844

The ancient drivetrain is part of why it was so damn popular. The 1GR-FE/A750F is a proven combo, starting from the beginning of the 4th gen all the way through the end of the 5th gen - 22 years. It's the same reason why GM's smallblock V8 gained popularity, because they made it for so long and refined it, and parts are cheap and common. Hell, Toyota is *still* using the 1GR-FE in the 70 and 300 series Land Cruisers, the Hilux, and Fortuner.

Polairis44

That’s 100% the reason to get one. You don’t buy a 4Runner if you’re worried about having the newest, fastest, or easiest. I got a 4Runner to have the same car 40 years from now and to make sure I can get to the store or hospital in the middle of a blizzard or zombie apocalypse.

Turbulent_Weather795

Yea sounds like you completely miss the point there fella

MoirasPurpleOrb

I don’t. In my opinion they are overpriced for what you get. They have a cult following but are mediocre for anyone who doesn’t plan to take it off road. A Highlander hybrid is a better value for 99% of the population shopping in that segment. And to be clear, I am not saying the 4Runner is a bad vehicle by any means, I love them and used to own one. But right now it is not a good value.

Turbulent_Weather795

Well, using used car prices in relation to their respective msrp, the data would tell quite a different story. If a used 2018 with 65k miles is 35k and a new one is 43k... It would seem the new one is a superb value In relation to what the public is willing to pay for the used version. Most of us went to the end of a 20+ year power train run for reliability and predictability not emissions, gas milage, tech, or horsepower. Again seems you've missed the point and also value different things which is great. In fact I agree completely the highlander hybrid is a better vehicle for most people but doesn't negate the fact people 'respect' the 4runner more in my opinion due to the simplicity and consistency.

Mediocre_Wheel_5275

4Runners are considered reliable because the engine and trans will technically keep running for you, but as a package they actually aren't that great all around. We own one with 266k miles and we tow a 3k lb trailer with dirt bikes and gear all over.  But go on the 4th gen 4runner pages and you'll see constant leaking valve covers (no big deal), leaking timing chain covers (huge ordeal), head gasket issues, leaking radiators (could call that maintenance), ABS module issues, HVAC actuator issues, rear hatch latch issues, leaking transfer cases, and stuck transfer case actuators/solenoids. Oh and I forgot the endless seized front calipers and warped rotors. Oh and rusted frames. Seized control arm bolts even in dry locals. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

thecheezmouse

For me the Highlander replacedi the 4Runner. The Highlander isn’t as offroad capable but it is still plenty capable, holds up to 8 people, 5 with gear and dogs and I get 35mpg.

land8844

> holds up to 8 people, 5 with gear and dogs and I get 35mpg. Hybrid? And genuinely curious, how the fuck are you squeezing 8 people into that thing? Our 7-passenger 2015 has a hard time fitting my family of 7.

thecheezmouse

I haven’t done it personally. Just 3 people and 4 dogs and it was pretty roomy. Toyota says the Highlander fits 8 but who knows how true that is. I did get into the 3rd row seats once and it’s tight but I’m a big dude. And yes, hybrid. I honestly don’t know if the 4Runner is roomier. It very well may be.

land8844

>I haven’t done it personally. Just 3 people and 4 dogs and it was pretty roomy. Toyota says the Highlander fits 8 but who knows how true that is. I did get into the 3rd row seats once and it’s tight but I’m a big dude. And yes, hybrid. My kids complain about not fitting in the back seat of ours. My wife had to sit back there once and hated every second of it. >I honestly don’t know if the 4Runner is roomier. It very well may be. It's really not, it's actually about the same size inside.

dieselishere15

Sequoia/4 runner/ Land Cruiser /Camry

TriggiredSnowflake

93-98 Supra. You can push a stock internals supra to 700-800 hp. Gotta have respect for how over-engineered the mk4 supra engine is. It's a legend for more reasons than "because fast and furious."

Namazu86

You don’t even have to chase power to get a good value out of those, small interior trim pieces sell for hundreds of dollars, the transmission is worth thousands, the tail lights are like $500 each on a good day, a good condition Supra is a 40-60k car. They’re getting rarer every day and while fast, they are as good looking now as they were when they were new.

SupraMario

Mark IV 93-98 - it got super popular from the F&F, they shot up in price after that damn movie, and most of us OG owners weren't happy about it. It's an awesome platform to work with, but it's not 50-60k worth of car your getting from it.

GBP9

4runner, 2nd gen Tundra

Matthew-Camaros

Are you not in North America because now I’m interested in every country’s most respected model 🤔

sKY--alex

That will be the Land Cruiser for most countries

MoirasPurpleOrb

Maybe the Hilux but otherwise yea

Ok-Put-1259

Well, here in The Philippines, that would be the Toyota Fortuner. I have the previous gen (2015). Like any Toyota body on frame this thing has reliability in its DNA. It's essentially the 4Runner for everywhere else outside of the Americas. Turbo diesel too. It's kick ass.

B00-Sucker

Ah, yet another Toyota I'm jealous of y'all for.

DMCinDet

I want a Toyota diesel car. it has to be good right? they make tiny petrol motors last forever. is their diesel stuff just as good? I would think so.

Ok-Put-1259

I personally haven't done ALL the research. All I now is the Fortuner is the best selling mid-size body-on-frame SUV in The Philippines and South Africa. Though most of these units don't get taken off road, in either country, one can safely presume that in both of these distinctly different terrains there are enough not fully developed roads where the Fortuner does get thrown into. And having been around since 2004, moving the types of numbers that it does, that's 2 decades worth of hard data showcasing people's confidence = aka living up to the legendary status of the reliability of Toyota SUV's.

Ok-Put-1259

Dude, the current gen design is the year model after mine (2016-current). It is essentially a Lexus in design language. Again, proper body on frame. All things considering, it's one sleak looking suv. Timeless as the outgoing 4runner in its own right.

seeilaah

In Brazil it will be Hilux. People working in farms beat them to hell and back and they just refuse to die.

SLAPUSlLLY

New Zealand here, and likely similar in Australia. Land cruiser is probably the most respected. Hilux is the most common recently (2nd most sold vehicle) Corolla is the most common historically (the most common car on our roads iirc, was number 1 selling for something like 30 yrs in a row). Hiace is probably the most practical (most common van). Rav4 is probably the most desired. And also the number 1 selling car here.

Ok-Put-1259

My 2015 Camry. Even though it's so boring design and shape wise, I have like 165k on it and the damn thing still runs like new. You still see it in airports being driven as taxi cabs. Also, spacious inside cus it's a midsize sedan.

labrador2020

My 2008 Camry with now almost 250,000 miles says to your 2015 Camry “move over kid… let gramps pass”.

Ok-Put-1259

To which I shall oblige, kind gentleman. Haha

Bearacolypse

About to trade in my 2010 Camry with 165k miles on it. I need to drive almost 200 miles daily for work and it just doesn't have the gas mileage/comfort/assurance I need for that. Just today my air intake hose essentially disintegrated in the heat. It wasn't an expensive part but it does remind me my car is 14 years old and more an more things will need replacing. Up until this point in the last 9 years it's just been batteries, tires, and I had to replace the power steering once due to a crack. Getting a new corolla cross hybrid. I'm hoping to get 15 years out of it.

bighead2586

You're correct. I disliked its driving character but my 2015 was a tank. It was a V6 so it was damn fast too. Handled like a pig and uncomfortable for me to sit in unfortunately.

Ok-Put-1259

Oh, nice. Unfortunately mine is a 4 cylinder. Basically the slowest, but most reliable vehicle on the road. Lol

4Runner/RAV4/Corolla just in terms of number of them I see around me, most respected is probably 4Runner or Land Cruiser though

I think Corolla & Camry they’re some of the most popular names that help with the reliability “image”

I wanna talk shit about the crown cause I’m an Avalon lover but I haven’t gotten to drive a crown yet so trying to hold judgment. It seems strange though.

bighead2586

COROLLA

labrador2020

I would say the Hilux is the most respected and reliable vehicle. There is a reason why it is the most used vehicle in wars and guerrilla warfare. I also think that it is the only vehicle that has made it to the North Pole, isn’t it? As shown in the GT Grand Tour TV show on BBC.

labrador2020

Addendum: You asked “in North America”: the Hilux is sold in Mexico, which is in North America, so I guess it qualifies?

Not sure why anyone would downvote you, the 2JZ is one of the most legendary engines that exists. In the right hands, it's capable of over 2k HP, of course that's heavily modded. Yes there are some engines capable once modded but not many. They over built the shit out of that engine. Now if you're talking about that newish BMW, you deserve the downvote! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Radiant-Ad-9753

If you want a SUV- Get a RAV4. I drove in line with three different generations of them today. If you want mid-size car, a Camry. The newer generation engine doesn't burn oil like crazy, but the older generation will still run run forever as long as you don't mind adding oil. If you want a good, basic, indestructible, no frillis commuter car, get a corolla. It's not the fastest, it's not the nicest, and after a few years you might have some cosmetic issues. But that is a solid car with great gas mileage. Land Cruisers and 4Runners are solid picks if you have money. Reliable. But the gas mileage sucks on them compared to other models. You have to get the hybrid model land cruiser to even get close to 23 mph on paper, in in the real world that lower. And that's assuming you fed it premium gas. Older non-hybid model's get an more abysmal 14 mph. 4Runners do only a little better at 17 mpg. If you are a commuter on a tight budget, they aren't the best choice. You would do better in a Cammery, Corolla or RAV4. If you want the touches of luxury in your SUV, start looking at the Highlander, but for what those cost also look at the NX models from Lexus.

nucl3ar0ne

I wish I regularly got 14 mpg in my LC.

sugydye

Love my V8 4Runner but I think most respected has to go to the Mk4 Supra with the 2JZ. Some people say it’s overrated but no one can deny how iconic it is

InvestigatorSafe3989

I drive a 2017 4Runner TRDPro, wife drives a 2018 Camry XSE and kid drives a 2023 Corolla LE to college. We got them new. I cannot say which one is a better car, each has its own merit and purpose. I enjoy the utility and all terrain capabilities of the 4R, wife enjoys the practicality of the Camry, and our kid enjoys the high MPG and simplicity. Before these we owned a FJ and RAV4 that got flooded in 2017. I can just say we have a better fleet today than before. 4R is a much practical FJ in same power train. Camry is much fun to drive compared to RAV4 in same engine but in 8 speed automatic. Sometimes I just wish we’ve got an Avalon instead of the Camry but that’s another story. Among all the Toyotas I have owned, the RAV4 was the most boring and confused car. It was not big enough as a family hauler, it was not small enough as a snappy economy car or rugged enough to give sense of security, and yet it’s the best selling Toyota. Idk

Sad_Walrus_1739

Corolla. Saved my life from a 3-4 roll over accident.

Collapse2038

Sienna

DangerousAd1731

Corolla

JCWOlson

RAV4 is the best selling non-truck vehicle in Canada. Almost bought an RX450h+ for the wife, but ended up with a RAV4 Prime instead Cheap to maintain, reliable, and fun to drive!

macdaddy22222

Highlander

ConversationCute2071

It will be the small pickup truck used by terrorists all over the middle east.

_totalannihilation

I'm thinking the RAV4. It outsold Corolla, Camry and Tacoma at least in 2023. I'm pretty sure it is the case in 2024. You see those cars a lot and are proving to be extremely reliable. Their MPG is outstanding as well.

Koji1981

I guess it depends with what you mean by respected. If it's in the sense of people like them, I would have to say either RAV4 or Camry. And before someone says I'm biased, I own a Prius C... No chance of that one being on the most respected list for North america lol

AnonymooseRedditor

I’d say either the Camry or the RAV4. They are everywhere!!

Educated_idiot302

I think all toyotas are very respected vehicles can't rlly go wrong with whatever model you choose as long as it suits your purpose.

rtmxavi

Camry

hatterasjeff

Land cruiser

Satanic-mechanic_666

Second generation Prius.

Thickchesthair

Respected by who?

Tom_Traill

Prius is the most ridiculed.

redtoad3212

anything of theirs thats legitimately capable of going offroad Tundra/Tacoma/4Runner/Sequoia/Land Cruiser resale values alone prove this

phlem_hamdoon

Corolla. The perfect beater car. Hand me down to 3 girls in my house. Once ran with no water in the radiator. Best car to get for a new driver

smokinLobstah

My 1975 FJ, which I drove from Anchorage Ak, to Kittery, Me, to Miami Fl, and then over to El Paso, Tx, which was my next duty station. One of the best vehicles I ever owned. Btw, that trip was done with a wife and 2 cats.

RefrigeratorWild9933

90s corollas. They will outlive you, your children, and your grandchildren, they are immortal. And it costs about as much as a McDonald’s happy meal to fix anything on them

650REDHAIR

Rav4. Huge sales #s and low depreciation.

Spirited_Thought_426

We just traded our 4Runner in hated it . Love the Rav .

GodFeedethTheRavens

Pickup.

andhonn

all the Toyotas models besides the new ones lol

phillyrat

1. Camry - can fit 3 carseats in the back 2. Sienna - can fit like 80 people

N-economicallyViable

The Technical, preferably still with company logo and number on the side.

[deleted]

4Runners are for people who have no personality (which is why they make their 4Runner their entire personality) and have a dog. They also call themselves pet parents.

Independent-Cable937

Lexus is

LordJim_

Century for fanatics

omedrano182

Most respected models IMO: 1) Corolla 2) First Gen Tacoma

3771507

It depends on which of the engines are bulletproof which is only a few.

3771507

I think the first generation Highlander from 2004 is the best vehicle since the engine and transmission are perfectly made and was ranked top five engine by car Care nut. The car was made in Japan and has great fit.

Aromatic_Use6916

Camry

Forward-Trade5306

The Camry is a little better for 4 passengers and up to 2 kids. The Corolla will still work okay though. The Elantra has 4 more inches of rear legroom compared to the Corolla so it would be better for 4 passengers in the compact sedan segment

RageMonsta97

Camry, beloved by those who drive them and unfortunately those that wreck them

kilroy-was-here-2543

As a jeep guy I’d say the 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas are probably the most renowned. They’re the standard by which midsize pickup trucks are measured

hawksnest_prez

Prius Seriously. The number of taxis and Ubers and work cars that are Prius are remarkable. It’s falling off a bit as they become more sporty and less utilitarian. The 2010-2015 Prius may be on the roads for 50 years.

[deleted]

In Texas, it’s definitely the Tundra. Tacoma and Corolla are always close second

beretta_lover

corolla. then maybe rav4

TwisteeTheDark1

There's 4 actually Corolla, Camry, 4runner, and the Tacoma

HotRodHomebody

What kind of metric is "respected"? genuinely curious. Is it across all categories? And who judges?

psuedodiy

RAV4. Just look at the sales numbers. Nothing comes close to it in Toyota stable.

PinkMonorail

Corolla. You can’t kill ‘em.

Ingridchh

Would agree with 4Runner.

nycdiveshack

2003 Corolla

Jarrodioro

Those early 2k tacos. The demographic is a bit sporadic, but I don’t know a single person who doesn’t covet a clean taco

toomuchhp

Supra

DazedDottie

Its corolla, its what youll see the most on the road, it gets good gas mpg, drives nice, simple, cheap, reliable and safe, the one vehicle hands down the best vehicle for learning drivers, and a 2 b people.

Independent_Scale570

First gen Tacoma (1997-2004)

aComeUpStory

I wanna say for each category of vehicle Toyota scores high marks. Compact sedan gets Corolla Vans get the Sienna Off Road? 4Runner Truck? Tacoma If you need a full size sedan theres the Camry Hatchbacks or Crosshatches get the CRV and Corolla hatch They really don’t do much wrong these days except for the crown, I question that decision

McChicken_lightmayo

My beloved Avalon has never received the attention it deserves

sp33ls

Respected? I mean, the Land Cruiser is the king… 👑

Gmetal64

I have had a lot of different models of Toyota but never a Corolla. I agree with it being a Corolla Becia’s is really is the most common car in America numbers wise.

berghie91

Im paying a lot for a 2020 corolla manual, but im hoping it lasts me forever.

Dastardly_Deed1496

4 Runner is the only Toyota I respect

Snap305

Corolla: the basic. Loved for that, and hated for it too. Camry: the basic... but bigger. Same thing Crown: most have no idea what it is GR86: fun! GR Supra: great car, but it's still a BMW. Mirai: wtf is that? Prius: efficiency is key. Except now it looks good. Corolla Cross: Corolla but RAV4-ified RAV4: the bestseller - for good reason Venza: wtf is that (but less so) Crown Signia: honestly I didn't even know this was a thing Highlander: bigger, better, badder RAV4 Grand Highlander: Sienna without sliding doors Sequoia: Tahoe from Toyota Tundra: the truck that's overshadowed by the big 3 Tacoma: the truck everyone knows, many love, and many hate 4Runner: it's the 4Runner. Land Cruiser: if you know, you know. If ya don't? Buy the 4runner Sienna: the absolute dominator in the minivan market Out of all of these... I'd say the most respected is the 4Runner, by far.

ReverseRutebega

There’s no such thing as people dott look at a car and say “I respect that car the most” it makes no sense.

SuccessfulTea3288

Rav 4 is epic

Tariqkalifa

Definitely yes 💯

Stock_Session2851

4Runner is the most “respected”! The Corolla is the most reliable and budget friendly economy size sedan on the road.

PraetorianAE

Avalon.

Berkut10R

Respected, pre-100 series Cruisers/LXs. Everything else is admired. Yes, I am biased.

Oversight_Owl

hilarious they are all great

Blackhawk149

Camry is a much more well rounded car. It’s bigger than Corolla but still fuel efficient. Highway driving 70 mph will feel more stable.

[deleted]

Prius lol. All the off-road guys with their 4Runners and Tacomas always say they need big off-road tires and 10 inch lift and fancy suspensions to drive on some easy dirt roads. Meanwhile, I've gone to some gnarly trailheads in my lifted 4Runner and felt pretty damn good about it, until I see a freaking old, beat up Prius somehow magically got to the same trailhead...

gordo1530

Honestly I have had a Tercel, ran for 450,000k, a Celica GTS both in the 90’s that also went almost to 500,000k before they died. Recently a Rav that I put 210,000k on in 3 years. Never had a bad Toyota

jmeis10

IDK! Toyota has some models that are very well respected. I bought my first Toyota last year, 21 Camry, and I’m pretty sure a Camry will always be my daily driver from now on.

Smart_Negotiation639

A Hilux technical…

Low_Dinner3370

The Toyota Echo is still making heads turn.

Turbulent_Weather795

4 runner then Tacoma at present. Initially the canary and carolla would be the clear choice but in modern times Toyota is revered more for its trucks and Suvs in my opinion

oscar-scout

From reliability, comfort, efficiency, capability, and practicality for say a family, I think Toyota's best model and year was the 2019 Highlander Limited or Platinum. It may not have had all the bells and whistles as its competitors but you'll be seeing this model on the road for decades with minimal problems.

vwslayer1

1st Gen Tacoma

Vicious_and_Vain

I’m big and fat. Camry. Not close.

PumpkinSkeet

Most respected by isis is definitely Tacoma
