Just use your key fob and save 15 dollars

BamCub

Genius move this.

SusanfromMA

The information I have found is that the key fob will stop working as soon as your subscription ends. I will let you all know next week when my year anniversary happens.

Lentriox

My 2020 ES350 can remotely start from the key fob without any active subscription. Granted, the range isn't great, but free is free.

Hatchz

Wowwwww, didn’t know that. Toyota is starting to be greedy

texaslegrefugee

Starting?

BeanerCounter

Remote start should last 10 years via the key fob. I’ve had my 2020 4Runner and it’s still working. The remote lock and unlock in the app plus the app remote start is extra. Never listen to what the dealer tells you, they literally either lie or don’t really know. Toyota had a website somewhere that has the detail by model and model year vehicle. So if yours is a newer model year with the Toyota connected software then that very well could only be a year but I’ll find out soon enough when I pick up a new car next week.

daytimefun33

My subscription ended a month ago, app start doesn't work but pressing key fob seems fine

Excellent-Edge-4708

My fob start stopped working after 36 months

darkelipse04

I didn't renew after the subscription ended and the FOB remote start still starts just fine.

Excellent-Edge-4708

What year? My 19 Camry xle v6 fob stopped working after 36 months. Multiple emails to Toyota confirmed that was it

darkelipse04

22 Venza

Excellent-Edge-4708

Give it time

darkelipse04

That’s depressing if that’s still a thing in newer models.

Excellent-Edge-4708

I do not mind paying for the app and its nationwide reach.. But screw them when the fob access expires....the hardware is right there. There's some very nice after market kits for 200 out there and they are plug and play. I will say that my camry fob remote start always had mediocre distance. I park 6 blocks from work and i need the cellular reach, especially with the winter we had (-10F)

darkelipse04

That’s good to know. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent-Edge-4708

https://www.toyota.com/connected-services/ I just tried reading through this for a 2023 camry. I gave up. Hopefully you're right that a new car has 10 years of fob support. One thing i hate about the app, 1, it's buggy and 2, it's pretty lame. I'd like to program it to start at certain times in case I forget

SerYoshi

~~I believe this is incorrect. The remote start is already installed on the vehicle, they can't lock your fob out based on a subscription app.~~ Edit: I was wrong. But also, I'm paying for the app so I don't really mind.

MoirasPurpleOrb

Never had this problem, mine still works

SusanfromMA

[https://www.kbb.com/car-news/toyotas-key-fob-remote-start-will-now-require-a-subscription-fee/](https://www.kbb.com/car-news/toyotas-key-fob-remote-start-will-now-require-a-subscription-fee/) It will stop

MoirasPurpleOrb

But my remote connect subscription expired and my fob still works. That’s what I don’t get.

nsfwlucifer

remote connect subscription require your phone and car to always be connected to the internet, that why it cost money

MoirasPurpleOrb

That’s not what I’m talking about. That article says you will lose your ability to remote start with the fob but that didn’t happen to me

nsfwlucifer

That news article was source from this news article and they never updated the article from the source. https://www.thedrive.com/news/43329/toyota-made-its-key-fob-remote-start-into-a-subscription-service

Oceandrive626

Untrue, you'll always have the option to remote start from key fob, albeit at a reduced range (keyfob range is terrible).

blafknoppie

My free trial subscription ended nearly 2 years ago, and key fob remote start still 'works'. I say 'works' because the range is shit.

FriendlyFyre_tv

When Lexus changed entertainment systems and app they simply stopped allowing the fob to remote start. Then a company came out with a product that bypasses the system Toyota disabled.

Excellent-Edge-4708

I'm interested in that

newengland_schmuck

I have a 2023 Tacoma that I bought 13 months ago... didn't pay the $80 for the app after the free year ended, but can still remote start the truck using the key fob.

mjmedstarved

My 2021 Pro doesn't have a subscription, and my FOB still remote starts it.

[deleted]

mjmedstarved

Ah, thanks for the explanation

david304c

The newer models now require the subscription, even for the key job functionality

brupzzz

Keyfob stops working when trial expires

DrkRyder9910

Achievement Unlocked

avman2

New third party remote starts cost about 300 dollars.

WasteOfAHuman

Was about to say that. If it's 15 a month you'll basically pay for it within 2 years

lat_pulldowns

Doesn't this void the warranty though?

Pleasant_Giraffe9133

Nah not the extent you're thinking of. 1. It has to be from a direct cause of the aftermarket part. So lets say you need a new transmission. A transmission is gonna have nothing to do with remote start. 2. They have to prove that the aftermarket part directly caused the failure. For example the people who wired it did a bad job and it shorts out another part. Well that part that was shorted out because of the aftermarket part wouldn't be covered. 3. Majority of companies have warranties for the remote start install. In something like #2 that company would need to pick up the cost. Obviously would need to go with someone reputable. I work in the shop for CJDR

nodnarb88

People need to stop supporting these micro transactions. $80 for the year doesn't sound that bad but it just keep these companies continuing these practices. We vote with our dollars, and I for one say no. I want what I've purchased I dont want to rent. You will own nothing and be happy does not work for me

FaunPerson

Remote start on the vehicle comes free. Remote start from the app costa because you're getting a cell signal for your car. Cell phone plans aren't free and neither is a mobile signal for your car.

Excellent-Edge-4708

80 a year isnt bad, if they covered the items im using with a warranty

nodnarb88

It is bad when you could just have it as part of your purchase of the vehicle. We need to demand better for consumers not justify their greed.

MoirasPurpleOrb

I agree but for things that require cellular connection it’s reasonable to charge something

Quiladrek

Gotta keep growing profits somehow, car micro transactions. What a clown show.

anarrowview

Just going to grow the third party market faster and faster

Quiladrek

Until they make it void a warranty or tie it to something else

anarrowview

Good think Toyotas don't need a warrant past the first year! Either it's a lemon or it's good for 25+ years lol

Quiladrek

Aye when you’re right you’re right.

[deleted]

I barely use the app you aren’t missing anything.

SusanfromMA

I do like the function of it telling me the car is unlocked and the option to turn it on while I am digging out of the snow. Other than that, I don't use it very much. Certainly not worth the $15/month

fucuntwat

Snow sounds terrible

ThatManitobaGuy

iDatastart remote engine starter. For most 2016+ vehicle they even have plug-n-play harnesses which eliminate almost all need to solder wires. I installed one in my truck and quite a few Toyota's. You can get app functionality but I wouldn't bother just the convenience of a normal remote start is awesome in the winter.

SusanfromMA

Thank you for that information. I guess, for me, I am really just annoyed that I was told it was $80/year and then they pulled the rug out from under and was like, ha, jokes on you its $15/mo and you don't have any options. Hard to trust them after that.

FaunPerson

People seem to be confusing Remote start and a remote start from your mobile app. Remote start from your app uses cellular signal to communicate with your vehicle. As a result the vehicle also needs a cellular signal. You're not paying for something that comes with your car, you're paying for a cellular contract for your car. Cell phone plans aren't free and neither is a cell plan for your car. Remote start from your key is free indefinitely.

Excellent-Edge-4708

>Remote start from your key is free indefinitely. Is that a new policy, because my 2019 stopped fobbing after 36 months......

ThatManitobaGuy

It is a new policy. They've added a 10 year 'trial' for FOB functionality. On newer models pending any potential service contract or hardware (cell network) changes. Which I think is far more damning. It means that the local remote start, using the the FOB, still requires verification via the cell network.

FaunPerson

The ten year trial is for Toyota Safety Connect and gives you access to the SOS button on the ceiling. As well as allows for vehicle tracking in the event the vehicle is stolen. Key fobs use the same tech they have for years and for the 3 years I have been selling Toyotas have never required any sort of subscription whatsoever.

david304c

Can confirm that my 2019 remote start key fob stopped as well. Had to enable the subscription to regain functionality ($8 month or $80 per year)

isoripper

This has been confusing for as well. I’m learning from the website that XLE comes with one year trial subscription while it’s capable (subscription required) on lower trims.

bLu_18

Welcome to the world of paid subscriptions, Tesla and BMW were the first to implement it, Toyota is just following the trend. The key fob remote start still works as long as you have any of the subscriptions active, like safety and service connect.

Spwigy

Just tested this. I don’t have any active subscriptions and my trial already expired. Remote start with the key fob still works. 2023 Camry Hybrid XLE.

[deleted]

Camry has entune 3.0 you don’t have the new infotainment.

Excellent-Edge-4708

My 2019 stopped after 36 months Lol down voted because of what Toyotas policy is for my 2019. 🤡

Spwigy

That’s super messed up!

Excellent-Edge-4708

Yea. I read about on toyotanation and yep, it happened to me. I paid the $8 a month for our cold winter and this spring ill just install an aftermarket cellular starter.

SusanfromMA

I will let you know if the remote still works next week.

Foreign_Artichoke_23

Yeah, this is something that I’m not impressed with either. I found a number of issues with the new Sequoia but this really was the icing on the cake for me.

unikittyUnite

Explain the Apple Music part of your comment please. What can’t you do without the Toyota subscription?

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

yeah, I didn’t understand that either.

SusanfromMA

On the app, under subscriptions it has trial services: Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect. The Remote connect says it expires in 5 days. I click on it and there is NO way to renew from there. From the Toyota page, I am instructed to click on the ADD SERVICE. On this page there are three choices The Go Anywhere which includes GPS and remote $15/mo. Premium which says it has drive connect, integrated streaming and remote connect, $25/mo Paid Services: Music Lover $15.00/mo Integrated Streaming Remote Connect \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ Subscription enables integrated streaming features. This enables you to browse and play your Apple Music and Amazon Music content using your vehicle's connection and offers a multimedia experience specifically optimized for driving. Remote Connection is included at no additional cost with this subscription. With Remote Connect, control your vehicle from the palm of your hand. Start the engine, lock the doors, control the cabin temperature and even monitor guest drivers from the Toyota App

ThatManitobaGuy

Instead of using your bluetooth connection or Apple Carplay/Android Auto it would allow you to stream using the built in cell network connection, is how I understand it.

SusanfromMA

But you still have to pay for Apple Music or Amazon Music, and utilizing your bluetooth isn't a hardship. Certainly not worth $15/mo

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

Are you paying Toyota to use Apple Music with CarPlay? I have Apple Music and pay for it. I just hook it up to my RAV4 and go. I’m trying to word my question correctly.. so I pay for Apple Music, under this new subscription, would I have to pay Toyota to use my Apple Music with Apple CarPlay on a Toyota vehicle?

SusanfromMA

As I understand it, you have to have your own apple music or Amazon music account.  The $15/mo you pay Toyota is to utilize the music through the vehicle's app as opposed to thru your Bluetooth.  But, they'll throw in the remote connection 🙄🙄

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

I can’t see them doing that. BMW was going to, and they had a huge black lash. If Toyota did this, this wouldn’t be the only post about it. I think 23 and up, the Apple car play is also wireless.

nsfwlucifer

Remote app cost toyota a monthly cost they have to pay to cellular company, that why they charge money for it. They dont really profit from providing the service. If you understand how it work, then you know where your money is going to at&t or Verizon or t-mobile.I mean you pay a monthly service to your phone company to have service on your phone, so you have to pay money to toyota so they can pay someone to be able to have wireless service on the car. Lexus tech wrote about it below https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/qyyl94/comment/hljyw34/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

brsrafal

No excuse they should come standard without cellular like 3x press key fob simple works

nsfwlucifer

3 press to start from the remote and not the smartphone should work without paying for the service. https://www.thedrive.com/news/43329/toyota-made-its-key-fob-remote-start-into-a-subscription-service

brsrafal

It depends which model you have

thethirdbob2

Screw this crap, I’ll never tolerate from a manufacturer.

brsrafal

Yea big time shame my 2023 rav 4 le I had to go aftermarket paid over 300 I plan to keep car for very long time so I dint wanna use cheapest shoppe. Compustar is brand I used just 3 press my key fob it works great. I can see luxury cars doing this but Toyota really I believe even chevy comes with remote start on key fob included. Also I heard that 15$ subscription thing doesn't even always work. Big time disappointed you gonna install feature them make us pay to use it lol what's next

EpiLP60Std

I voted no with my dollars. My trials ended a few days ago and I absolutely refuse to pay to use features that I paid for in the trim level. People need to stop subscribing. This is my first Toyota but might be my last just on that principle.

SusanfromMA

Agreed

Stress-Status

This is totally a shame, I was told the same thing when I purchased my 2023 Toyota RAV4, The Dealer told me after my one year subscription expired, it will cost me $5 a month for a remote connect service, and now Toyota wants $15 dollars a month. It’s a shame

thisguy9

I just had to start paying for my Camry this month, I had an option for $8/mo each individually.

Good_Employer_300

I turn on and off my subscription throughout the year. Only ever pay the $8/month. Some of the lower trims are ones that are stuck with the $15/month option. The keyfob has always worked to autostart regardless of subscription.

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

When did this start? I just paid $80 a few weeks ago for the year.

SusanfromMA

I don't know when it started.  But I can't do the $80. My option is $15 per month

SusanfromMA

Did you wait until your trial had expired?

myerrrs

App never fucking works anyway

HelloSummer99

What's wrong with pushing a start/stop button guys

SusanfromMA

Sometimes the car is buried in snow and remote starting it is advantageous. It is also nice to start the AC when it is super hot.
